all is already upon us, yet it seems like just yesterday we were ringing in the new year! I remember as a child, a class seemed like a neverending hour. I would look up at the clock with such confidence that it was almost time for the bell to ring, only to be disappointed that the hand on the clock barely even moved from the last moment I glanced at it. And at the time, when the adults would say, “wait until you get older, time will pass you by…”, I never quite understood what they meant, until now. Many days I look at the clock, wishing I could turn it back, desperately in need of gaining back a few hours to get my task list done. I know technology has made us more efficient in many ways, but for me, all it did was make me more efficient at putting more on my plate, including this summer, which means I didn’t get to explore some of the amazing destinations we talked about in our summer travel edition (but I sure hope you did!).

While I didn’t get to travel this summer, I did have the opportunity to explore South Florida while driving the sexy orange McLaren GT for a week. McLaren is as popular as ever, producing supercars that push the bounds of speed and exclusivity and I got to experience it firsthand. Truth be told, I am by no means the car expert, so I enlisted my friend Jonathan Krutchik (a performance car aficionado and a McLaren owner) to give me his take on the car as it compares to the many other exotic cars he’s driven in his lifetime, including Lamborghini, Ferrari and Porsche, and this is what he had to say.

“In my opinion, nothing compares to the blistering performance of a McLaren. Plus, the car sports a gorgeous, exotic design, both interior and exterior, cool features like the dihedral doors and active aerodynamics and comfort features like 360º surround view, soft close doors - they basically thought of everything, especially with the 720S. And most importantly you will get a hypercar performance at a supercar price point.”

W

hat do magazines mean to you?

For me, magazines are an escape. I remember the excitement of my favorite magazines arriving in the mail and poring over the photography, stories and ads. Even as we’re immersed in the digital age, there’s something special about losing yourself in a hard copy of a glossy.

And now, what we could all use more than ever is an escape. The last 18 months have been a series of “unprecedented times” with tragedy striking all over the country, including on a local level. South Florida was rocked by the collapse of the Champlain Towers in Surfside back in June, and as big as Miami can feel sometimes, it’s amazing how many of us were connected to such a tragedy. The team at Luxury Guide USA was just as heartbroken as the rest of our community, and we mourn with those whose lives have been upended by the collapse.

I hope as you flip through this issue that it serves as an escape for you from all the adversity we’ve witnessed in the past year-plus. It’s our special cars and yachts issue, and the pages are jam-packed with sexy roadsters and elegant vessels, starting on page 25. Getting in the cockpit of a car or the helm of a boat is an escape of its own, and trust me when I say our in-the-know writers picked some good ones for you all.

As traveling becomes a little bit easier, we’ve highlighted amazing destinations near and far for the fall season (page 49). And who doesn’t love some retail therapy? Our shop pages (page 84) have some great ideas, from fashion and accessories to home design and toys for the little ones.

As we enter the holiday season, please take care of yourself and those around you.

nterior designer Gil Walsh is acclaimed for giving clients the style they want in their homes; in fact, at her firm in West Palm Beach and Martha’s Vineyard, the slogan is, “where style lives.” Walsh and her team take great pride in evoking insight from a discerning clientele, then superimposing their own knowledge, experience and panache to achieve stylish spaces that are both visually pleasing and purposeful. “We never stop reminding ourselves that style is nothing without function,” Walsh says. The accomplished designer partners with many notable South Florida brands (as evidenced in her Worth Avenue pop-up shop) and was entrusted to replicate— as authentically as possible—famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece “Fallingwater.” She also proudly sits on an advisory committee for preservation of the historic home.

What is your definition of luxury? My version of luxury has an aspect of extreme comfort and convenience, but that means different things to different people. It could be a quality mattress, linen bedding, or fabrics that can handle wear and tear while still being luxurious. Because it’s subjective, I recommend curating what a luxury lifestyle means to you personally.

What would you identify as “trending” right now? Since we are spending more time and doing more things at home, functional considerations are of greater importance, thus triggering the need for better practical solutions including the use of the right materials… often with an eye to longevity. In short, I’d say that although it’s a “perennial” trend, finding the perfect balance between form and function is the “hottest” trend.

What steps do you take to make your designs sustainable and eco-friendly? Whenever appropriate, we like to incorporate reclaimed woods, bamboo and recycled metal into the mix of materials we use. I also opt for environmentally conscious finishes with low VOCs and nontoxic paints.

You’ve stated that art is your passion and an important aspect of your work. What is one of your go-to local art galleries?

I have a wonderful relationship with the Holden Luntz Gallery in Palm Beach, which specializes in artistic photography, from classical to contemporary.

If you were to name a “dream piece” for your own interior— regardless of budget—what would it be? Original art by Picasso or Thomas Moran, and sculptures by masters from Henry Moore to Edgar Degas.

How do you manage to achieve a seamless transition from interior to exterior in your design work here in South Florida?

One of the best ways to create a smooth flow is using the same materials for both indoors and outdoors wherever possible.

Linking indoor and outdoor spaces also helps the interiors feel larger. When the interior of a home is connected to the exterior, your eye sees farther and your space appears larger.

Who is the design legend that most inspires you and why? I have always been inspired by American designer Michael Taylor’s work, often referred to as the “California look.” The effects of airiness and lightness he achieved is particularly appealing to me.

The many wonderful ways he brought the outdoors in—some 50 years ago—is still a trend.

“Homes are going under contract as soon as they are listed; the median time to contract in June was an astonishing 11 days,” says Karen Johnson, president of Broward, Palm Beaches & St. Lucie Realtors.

For international buyers, Florida has been in the top spot for over a decade, and nearly half of buyers focus specifically on the Miami metro area. In South Florida, in 2020, 70% went to Miami-Dade, 26% to Broward and 2% to Palm Beach. And out-of-state buyers also have their sights set on Florida, surpassing even California, New York and Texas. Residents from those states are the ones packing their bags and heading to South Florida—according to the MIAMI Association of Realtors (MIAMI), 52% of out-of-state buyers in South Florida are coming from New York,

California, New Jersey and Texas.

There’s a number of reasons that South Florida has been a coveted market: no income tax, record-low mortgage rates and pro-business policies. Plus, with a shift to remote work, buyers have greater control over where they can and want to live—data from Orbital Insight says that South Florida was the fourth most popular relocation destination during the pandemic.

“With global vaccinations rising and unstable political situations around the world, we are seeing an increase in foreign homebuyers purchasing in South Florida,” says Jennifer Wollmann, the 2021 MIAMI Association of Realtors (MIAMI) chairman of the board. “Global buyers purchase in Miami because we are a world-class global city with better real estate prices than other similar global cities.”

With a high demand and low inventory, that’s good news for local Realtors and home sellers.

What inspired you to create Mindful Mani?

I wanted to create a concept that prioritized health as well as beauty, a self-care haven for women and men seeking a pampering experience without harmful and toxic chemicals.

Your polishes are "10 free." What does that mean? Our polishes do not contain 10 of the most harmful toxins often found in other polishes: toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), camphor, xylene, ethyl tosylamide, parabens, acetone, triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) and fragrance.

How do you keep manicures safe? We do not soak hands in water. This is better for skin and ensures a safe service free from crosscontamination.

What are some clean alternatives for clients who want long nails? We do not offer or remove any form of acrylic or dip acrylic powder. Apres Gel-X lasts up to four weeks, is odorless and does not require filing. We also use Japanese clear gel as a base to help strengthen our clients’ natural nails for a stronger foundation.
