inter isn’t just coming, South Florida; it is here in full swing, and things are heating up fast. Not only do we immediately kick off December with Miami Art Week, but Super Bowl LIV comes to us in early February, followed by the South Beach Wine & Food Festival later that month. In between, there’s sure to be plenty of holiday cheer as we ring in a new decade. Lucky for you, this issue will guide you through all of it in true luxury fashion.

We start off with our Guide to Art Week (page 45), a neighborhood-by-neighborhood roundup of the top fairs, can’t-miss exhibitions and must-attend events, plus places to relax and refuel in between. This year, we had the opportunity to interview Martina Navratilova, who isn’t just a sports icon, she’s a seasoned artist who creates magnificent works using tools she’s very familiar with: tennis balls and a racket. Her collaboration with Warren Henry Auto Group on a special art car, which is debuting during Art Week at a private event, is the focus of our Art in Motion feature (page 58).

South of Fifth’s Papi Steak from David Grutman’s Groot Hospitality and David “Papi” Einhorn is one of the most buzzed-about openings in town, having already hosted the likes of J. hef Benjamin Meyer, chef and beverage director of Accor Hotels’ Novotel Miami Brickell, knows a thing or two about the art of cooking. The veteran chef holds numerous accolades, including Four Diamond achievements and Restaurant of the Year awards, and has cooked at the James Beard House, among other notable locales.

Meyer’s wealth of experience at prominent restaurants in the U.S. and around the world, coupled with his innate talent, make him a priceless asset to Novotel’s signature restaurant ima which features a small plates menu with in uences from the mericas Old World Europe and the Far East.

At South Florida Luxury Guide’s 14th Battle of the Chefs, Meyer’s open-faced “burger,” his ellowfin una onserva ontadito was a clear guest favorite. t ovotel iami Brickell, environmental responsibility and the repurposing of food is very important to us,” Meyer says. “Instead of using beef for this inspired ‘burger,’ I used the trim from the tuna tata i we served which was cured and poached in olive oil. e have simplified the recipe here for the home cook.”

Yellowfin Tuna Conserva Montadito Yields 8 pieces

INGREDIENTS: 8 ounces blended oil (canola with touch of olive oil) 4 garlic cloves 1 palm fresh herbs (whatever is available) Salt and pepper to taste 1 pound fresh yellowfin tuna 2 pieces pita, naan or flatbread 2 ounces garlic aioli 16 Kalamata olives 1 large tomato, grated, seasoned with salt and kissed with olive oil 16 watercress sprigs or arugula leaves

PREPARATION: Preheat oven to 250 F. Crush Kalamata olives and dry on paper towel; slow-cook or dehydrate until they crumble.

Cut fresh tuna into chunks to expose more surface area. Season as you see fit.

Let sit 30 minutes. Place in shallow pot and add the palm of herbs, crushed garlic cloves and blended oil. Place on the eye of a burner and slowly let it poach on just the pilot light. (The low heat keeps the texture and integrity.) If it’s an ovensafe pan, you can place it in with olives.

When cooked through, remove and let sit until it reaches room temperature.

Toast bread in oven or on grill. Cut into quarters to give you 8 pieces.

Mound ⅛ of warm tuna on top of bread.

Season with salt. Drizzle grated tomato over tuna. Sprinkle crumbled olive over the top. Place dollops of aioli.* Finish each piece with 2 sprigs of watercress.

Serve with side of fresh fruit or papas fritas dusted in pimenton.

With a professional tennis career spanning four decades and an unprecedented 59 Grand Slam titles, including a record nine Wimbledon singles championships, Martina Navratilova is considered one of the greatest players in tennis history—and one of the greatest athletes of all time. Now, the sports icon is using her racket to reignite a different passion: art.

ust as in tennis, life introduces all kinds of unexpected bounces— some are favorable, others not so much. But for Martina Navratilova, there was one lucky bounce that led her to explore a newfound love in the world of art. That bounce came in 2000 when she was introduced to Slovak painter and sculptor Juro Kralik, who proposed an idea for an art collaboration using tools Navratilova has long been familiar with: tennis balls. We caught up with the tennis superstar to discuss the ongoing collaboration, how it has evolved, and that despite the inherent differences between tennis and art, they surprisingly have a lot in common.

Tell us about your trajectory from tennis to art? How did you get started? Juro Kralik came to me with this idea he got from playing tennis on clay. He observed how the balls and shoe marks make imprints on the surface of the court, telling the story of the match.

You brush them off after each game, kind of like Etch A Sketch. He thought it would be interesting to preserve this story. So, he came to my hometown in the Czech Republic and had me hit tennis balls onto square canvases padded with clay. e made these first pieces on the court where first hit a tennis all.

How has the collaboration evolved? We eventually moved from clay to paint. Juro would coat the canvases in wet paint, and I would hit the balls on them, taking the paint off as I went. Later, we graduated to a new method where we dip the balls into the paint and I hit them onto a blank canvas. To date, we have made over 200 pieces, from ones that are 2-by-2 feet to ones that are 30-by-80 feet. We’ve also experimented with some other mediums, including glass.

Tell us about the piece you chose for the art car collaboration with Warren Henry. Miami is all about color—with the green and the blue of the ocean and the vibrant hues all around. I thought the colors of this piece really embody the city.

Have you always had a creative side? I like to think I’m an artist with a racket. I have a great sense of space and proportion, but I’m not someone who can see something and draw it. The boy who sat next to me in grade school could draw beautifully. I would try to copy what he did, but I just couldn’t do it!

How do tennis and art differ? How are they similar? Art is very subjective—you can create the most amazing piece, but have no one want to buy it. In tennis, even though you don’t know if you’re going to win or lose, you know exactly where you stand. There’s no judgment; it’s just about who’s better on that day. Tennis is also easier because there is a definite finishing point of a match. n art the hardest part is knowing when to stop. You always want to try to make a piece better.

But in life, I’ve learned that oftentimes less is more.

Tennis and art are similar in that you try your best at both, but you never really know how they’re going to turn out. You strive for excellence, but even if you don’t get there, it’s OK as long as you enjoy the process. I love everything about tennis, both on the court and off the court. If I win, that is just a bonus. It is the same for art. You have to enjoy doing it—and if you make somebody else happy with the piece, then that’s the cherry on the sundae.

What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in sports or art—or anything for that matter? Fear of failure is a big thing in our society. I guess I’m never afraid to fail. You just learn from your mistakes and try to do better the next time. Another piece of advice (though it’s a little cliché) is to do what you love. You’ll be better at it and you’ll commit to it. As long as you do your best every day, you’re going to be happy and you won’t have any regrets. I say when in doubt, go for it!

Your father was in the auto business. Did you always want to follow in his footsteps?

I always had an interest in cars—and not just because I grew up around them. The sound of an engine has always given me a thrill.

Learning about the engineering behind each vehicle also excited me. But I’ll always remember something about my father that had nothing to do with cars: He always put his employees and the community first and he elieved that would e re ected in the customer experience.

Speaking of your new headquarters, what can customers expect? s vice president of wealth management and financial advisor at UBS Financial Services, Inc. for The Suskind-Ripple Group, Laura Raybin Miller helps South Florida families navigate the dynamics of their wealth planning. But that is only part of how this powerhouse with a heart of gold supports her community; she also helps through her leadership and participation in both civic and health care organizations.

Through her volunteer service as commissioner of Memorial Healthcare System, she is a champion for children’s causes, maintaining the belief that all children should have access to quality health care regardless of their socioeconomic status.

In addition, as a mentor for the Women of Tomorrow organization, she goes out of her way to inspire and empower young women to reach their highest potential.

In 2000, Raybin Miller was appointed as commissioner of the South Broward Hospital District (Memorial Healthcare System), a position she’s retained for nearly 20 years, making her the board’s longest-serving commissioner. In this role, she voted for lessening the tax burden for the communities Memorial Healthcare System serves under its “safety net” status while maintaining the

lowest millage rate in its 60-year history. She is also committed to raising awareness about the Memorial Breast Cancer Center, the only regional breast cancer center to provide comprehensive care exclusively to women, through speaking engagements and public awareness campaigns for Breast Cancer Awareness Month every October. She continues to advocate for resources needed to ensure Memorial Healthcare System’s delivery of gold-standard cancer care.

Over the years, Raybin Miller has also been a strong advocate for exceptional board governance. In August 2017, she earned a Governance Fellowship from the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the highest standard of credentialing for corporate directors. In March 2018, she became a member of the Women Corporate Directors Foundation (WCD), which was established to promote the highest standards of corporate governance within the rapidly growing international community of female directors on both public and private boards.

Raybin Miller’s list of accomplishments only continues to grow. She is not only an inspiration to those who wish to bring about change to our world, she is a leader who is ready to be followed.

LAURA RAYBIN MILLER You are a champion for women. How does your personal insight play into your career as a financial advisor?

I have been an investment professional since 1999, working with clients to identify their financial goals. I especially enjoy working with my female clients; as a single mother, I empathetically translate my experiences to women who are in life transitions.

What does the phrase “exceptional boardå governance” mean to you?

My 20 years of board service has allowed me to collaborate with fellow leaders and to be part of something that’s truly exceptional. There’s nothing more fulfilling than being a part of something that’s bigger than yourself.

Is there a specific issue that’s close to your heart? My mother was a three-time breast cancer survivor, and I am therefore passionate about breast cancer awareness. I work zealously to marshal resources on the hospital level to ensure Memorial Healthcare System’s comprehensive medical services are accessible to women regardless of their ability to pay. Women in our community no longer have to travel out of town for gold-standard care.

What is one of the most important life lessons you have learned? I’ve learned not to be attached to inanimate objects. I only keep items that provide me with positive energy. I am a minimalist at heart, and I appreciate organization and structure.

Your strong sense of community is clearly in your genes. How have you passed these qualities down to your son? My 34-year-old son, Adam Raybin, of whom I am extremely proud, is a paramedic, an EMT and a lieutenant with the Broward County Sheriff’s Fire Rescue. He shares my selfless desire to help individuals in need.

I

f remarriage is on your horizon, congratulations! It can be an exciting new adventure, as well as an opportunity to make key investment decisions alongside your spouse.

Remarriage is on the rise. Sixty-seven percent of previously married adults between the ages of 55-64 are remarried, up from 55 percent in 1960.1 People are living longer, and when they find the right partner again, they opt for matrimony.

Overall, women are less likely than men to remarry, with 64 percent of eligible men remarrying, compared to 52 percent of women. However, this 12-point gender gap was a 20-point gap in 1980, when only 46 percent of women had remarried, compared with 66 percent of eligible men.1 What’s this mean? Today’s women are embracing remarriage.

But it’s a choice born of freedom: Women who remarry have presumably been solely responsible for their financial wellbeing—at least for a time. We learned from UBS’s “Own your worth” report, which features research data on women who have been divorced or widowed, that nine out of 10 women felt good about themselves as they made more financial decisions on their own.2 If you are planning to remarry right now or even in the distant future, here are four actions you should consider taking before you exchange your vows.

Assess your financial baggage. Review for yourself how you participated in the financial decisions in your first marriage.

Were you happy with the arrangement? If not, what about

it frustrated you or left you unsatisfied? A second marriage can be a chance to revise your role in making important financial decisions, especially if you tended to take a backseat to your spouse in your previous marriage. In fact, 79 percent of women who remarry do take a more active role the second time around.2 Be clear on your financial goals. What do you want for your future? How does your marriage play into that? These are lofty questions. Have the important conversations. Have meaningful conversations with your soon-to-be-spouse. This may be second nature to you, particularly if you were able to have good discussions about finances in your first marriage. But deep-dive conversations about money still feel taboo for

some couples. Not only does each partner bring his or her own ideas about money and investing into the marriage, if it’s a second marriage and/or a marriage later in life, each partner already has quite a bit of life experience and financial history. Getting everything out into the open is key.

Increase your confidence in making investment decisions. Women often feel unsure about investing. Just 29 percent of women in heterosexual couples consider themselves highly knowledgeable about investing, and only 25 percent of women in same-sex couples say they’re highly knowledgeable.2 Over and over again, we’ve found that women lack confidence because they overestimate how much knowledge you need to make investment decisions. In fact, 85 percent of married women who abdicate to their spouses when it comes to making long-term financial decisions do so because they believe their spouses know more.2 The truth is, it doesn’t take nearly as much experience to make investment decisions as women think. It does, however, take confidence. If you started to develop that confidence after a divorce or in widowhood, make sure to keep building it and channeling it as you settle into a new partnership.

Life is long, and we often find ourselves with a second chance to find the contentment or adventure we’re seeking. Remarrying can be that opportunity. If you enter into matrimony with a solid plan around your financial goals and aspirations, the best is yet to come.

oCal native Monique Miller studied at the Art Institute of Chicago before launching a career in the fashion industry in New York City. She later relocated to Miami, where she fell in love with design while renovating her own home with her husband, Gustaf. “Interiors came very naturally to me after my years in fashion styling and merchandising,” she says. Once their 1930s-style home was complete, it sold within 24 hours.

The couple realized their calling, and in 2017, they formed Calimia Home. Monique creates the overall design and aesthetic for projects while Gustaf takes the lead with logistics and management. ’m in uenced y the places ’ve visited Monique says. “I get to create beautiful spaces every day for a living. The Miami real estate market shows great promise for the future, says Edgardo Defortuna, president and CEO of Fortune International Group, who adds that the city’s status as a renowned real estate destination has grown significantly over the past decade. He credits much of this to its burgeoning cultural offerings. “Miami is home to world-class cultural institutions—the Arsht Center, PAMM, Frost Science and Art Basel,” Defortuna says. “Residents have access to museums events and e periences right outside their doors.”
