life. Whether you choose to do so in time or in money, you should make a point to get involved with a charity in 2020. But it doesn’t stop there. Some of the easiest ways to give back are simple acts of kindness, such as helping someone carry their groceries, letting a car into your lane, opening doors for people, giving compliments, saying hello or sharin a smile. You will see that your ind estures will reflect bac onto you.

inter isn’t just coming, South Florida; it is here in full swing, and things are heating up fast. Not only do we immediately kick off December with Miami Art Week, but Super Bowl LIV comes to us in early February, followed by the South Beach Wine & Food Festival later that month. In between, there’s sure to be plenty of holiday cheer as we ring in a new decade. Lucky for you, this issue will guide you through all of it in true luxury fashion.

We start off with our Guide to Art Week (page29), a neighborhood-by-neighborhood roundup of the top fairs, can’t-miss exhibitions and must-attend events, plus places to relax and refuel in between. This year, we had the opportunity to interview Martina Navratilova, who isn’t just a sports icon, she’s a seasoned artist who creates magnificent works using tools she’s very familiar with: tennis balls and a racket. Her collaboration with Warren Henry Auto Group on a special art car, which is debuting during Art Week at a private event, is the focus of our Art in Motion feature (page 42).

Why did you want to open a restaurant in Fort Lauderdale? Rivertail has finally iven me the opportunity to expand my culinary endeavors into Miami’s sister city. The dining scene in Fort Lauderdale has grown tremendously, and I’m excited to be a part of that continued growth.

What are some of Rivertail’s must-try dishes? I don’t want to share too much just yet, but I will say that there will be many fan favorites on the menu. We will have an amazing variety of seafood, both locally sourced and imported. Like my other restaurants, the appetizer section will be tapas style, perfect for sharing with friends and family.

Why did you want the restaurant to focus on seafood? Having been born and raised on Puerto Rico, seafood has always been a big part of my life. With Rivertail, I wanted to bring a fresh look and add my signature touch to the traditional oyster bar and fish house concepts.

Whip softened cream cheese until smooth, add eggs and slowly mix. Slowly add pumpkin purée, powdered sugar and then other spices. Mix until smooth. Set aside.

Best home cooking tip? Have fun with it! Make food that you like, but also try to challenge yourself.

The 13th edition of this fair presented by the International Fine Print Dealers Association features works on paper dating from 20thcentury masterworks to recently published editions. The Suites of Dorchester hotel rooms are transformed into galleries, each hosting a diverse collection of pieces.

Now in its 15th edition, this sister fair to Art Miami and CONTEXT Art Miami is all about cultivating talent. Set within the boutique Aqua Hotel, the show spotlights young, emerging and mid-career artists in a casual, more relaxed atmosphere than some of the other fairs this week.

Galleries and collectors come together at ELV exhibit hall (directly across the street from the convention center) for this show’s debut. The fair offers dealers and exhibitors the opportunity to bring clients back to their booths after regular hours, providing private access until 11 p.m.

With a professional tennis career spanning four decades and an unprecedented 59 Grand Slam titles, including a record nine Wimbledon singles championships, Martina Navratilova is considered one of the greatest players in tennis history—and one of the greatest athletes of all time. Now, the sports icon is using her racket to reignite a different passion: art.

ust as in tennis, life introduces all kinds of unexpected bounces— some are favorable, others not so much. But for Martina Navratilova, there was one lucky bounce that led her to explore a newfound love in the world of art. That bounce came in 2000 when she was introduced to Slovak painter and sculptor Juro Kralik, who proposed an idea for an art collaboration using tools Navratilova has long been familiar with: tennis balls. We caught up with the tennis superstar to discuss the ongoing collaboration, how it has evolved, and that despite the inherent differences between tennis and art, they surprisingly have a lot in common.

Tell us about your trajectory from tennis to art? How did you get started? Juro Kralik came to me with this idea he got from playing tennis on clay. He observed how the balls and shoe marks make imprints on the surface of the court, telling the story of the match.

You brush them off after each game, kind of like Etch A Sketch. He thought it would be interesting to preserve this story. So, he came to my hometown in the Czech Republic and had me hit tennis balls onto s uare canvases padded with clay. e made these first pieces on the court where I first hit a tennis ball.

How has the collaboration evolved? We eventually moved from clay to paint. Juro would coat the canvases in wet paint, and I would hit the balls on them, taking the paint off as I went. Later, we graduated to a new method where we dip the balls into the paint and I hit them onto a blank canvas. To date, we have made over 200 pieces, from ones that are 2-by-2 feet to ones that are 30-by-80 feet. We’ve also experimented with some other mediums, including glass.

Tell us about the piece you chose for the art car collaboration with Warren Henry. Miami is all about color—with the green and the blue of the ocean and the vibrant hues all around. I thought the colors of this piece really embody the city.

Have you always had a creative side? I like to think I’m an artist with a racket. I have a great sense of space and proportion, but I’m not someone who can see something and draw it. The boy who sat next to me in grade school could draw beautifully. I would try to copy what he did, but I just couldn’t do it!

How do tennis and art differ? How are they similar? Art is very subjective—you can create the most amazing piece, but have no one want to buy it. In tennis, even though you don’t know if you’re going to win or lose, you know exactly where you stand. There’s no judgment; it’s just about who’s better on that day. Tennis is also easier because there is a definite finishin point of a match. In art, the hardest part is knowing when to stop. You always want to try to make a piece better.

But in life, I’ve learned that oftentimes less is more.

Tennis and art are similar in that you try your best at both, but you never really know how they’re going to turn out. You strive for excellence, but even if you don’t get there, it’s OK as long as you enjoy the process. I love everything about tennis, both on the court and off the court. If I win, that is just a bonus. It is the same for art. You have to enjoy doing it—and if you make somebody else happy with the piece, then that’s the cherry on the sundae.

What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in sports or art—or anything for that matter? Fear of failure is a big thing in our society. I guess I’m never afraid to fail. You just learn from your mistakes and try to do better the next time. Another piece of advice (though it’s a little cliché) is to do what you love. You’ll be better at it and you’ll commit to it. As long as you do your best every day, you’re going to be happy and you won’t have any regrets. I say when in doubt, go for it!

Your father was in the auto business. Did you always want to follow in his footsteps?

I always had an interest in cars—and not just because I grew up around them. The sound of an engine has always given me a thrill.

Learning about the engineering behind each vehicle also excited me. But I’ll always remember something about my father that had nothing to do with cars: He always put his employees and the community first, and he believed that would be reflected in the customer experience.

How would you say Miami Art Week has changed the city? I appreciate what Art Basel has done for Miami. It brings world travelers to our doorstep each year, creatin an incredible ener y. And, of course, it’s always exciting to see what is new and groundbreaking in the world of art.

How do you think the auto industry relates to art? There’s a tremendous correlation between autos, art and artists. In fact, the ori inal and over was the first car to be displayed at the Louvre in Paris. You support many local organizations. Why is that important to you? As I mentioned, giving back was something passed down to me from my father. He always felt that supporting the community should be a top priority. This community has given my family so much, and it is rewardin to have the ability to support it and be a part of it.

s vice president of wealth management and financial advisor at UBS Financial Services, Inc. for The Suskind-Ripple Group, Laura Raybin Miller helps South Florida families navigate the dynamics of their wealth planning. But that is only part of how this powerhouse with a heart of gold supports her community; she also helps through her leadership and participation in both civic and health care organizations.

Through her volunteer service as commissioner of Memorial Healthcare System, she is a champion for children’s causes, maintaining the belief that all children should have access to quality health care regardless of their socioeconomic status.

In addition, as a mentor for the Women of Tomorrow organization, she goes out of her way to inspire and empower young women to reach their highest potential.

In 2000, Raybin Miller was appointed as commissioner of the South Broward Hospital District (Memorial Healthcare System), a position she’s retained for nearly 20 years, making her the board’s longest-serving commissioner. In this role, she voted for lessening the tax burden for the communities Memorial Healthcare System serves under its “safety net” status while maintaining the

lowest millage rate in its 60-year history. She is also committed to raising awareness about the Memorial Breast Cancer Center, the only regional breast cancer center to provide comprehensive care exclusively to women, through speaking engagements and public awareness campaigns for Breast Cancer Awareness Month every October. She continues to advocate for resources needed to ensure Memorial Healthcare System’s delivery of gold-standard cancer care.

Over the years, Raybin Miller has also been a strong advocate for exceptional board governance. In August 2017, she earned a Governance Fellowship from the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the highest standard of credentialing for corporate directors. In March 2018, she became a member of the Women Corporate Directors Foundation (WCD), which was established to promote the highest standards of corporate governance within the rapidly growing international community of female directors on both public and private boards.

Raybin Miller’s list of accomplishments only continues to grow. She is not only an inspiration to those who wish to bring about change to our world, she is a leader who is ready to be followed.

LAURA RAYBIN MILLER You are a champion for women. How does your personal insight play into your career as a financial advisor?

I have been an investment professional since 1999, working with clients to identify their financial goals. I especially enjoy working with my female clients; as a single mother, I empathetically translate my experiences to women who are in life transitions.

What does the phrase “exceptional boardå governance” mean to you?

My 20 years of board service has allowed me to collaborate with fellow leaders and to be part of something that’s truly exceptional. There’s nothing more fulfilling than being a part of something that’s bigger than yourself.

Is there a specific issue that’s close to your heart? My mother was a three-time breast cancer survivor, and I am therefore passionate about breast cancer awareness. I work zealously to marshal resources on the hospital level to ensure Memorial Healthcare System’s comprehensive medical services are accessible to women regardless of their ability to pay. Women in our community no longer have to travel out of town for gold-standard care.

What is one of the most important life lessons you have learned? I’ve learned not to be attached to inanimate objects. I only keep items that provide me with positive energy. I am a minimalist at heart, and I appreciate organization and structure.

Your strong sense of community is clearly in your genes. How have you passed these qualities down to your son? My 34-year-old son, Adam Raybin, of whom I am extremely proud, is a paramedic, an EMT and a lieutenant with the Broward County Sheriff’s Fire Rescue. He shares my selfless desire to help individuals in need.

BEFORE YOU REMARRY, DO THIS EMBARK ON YOUR NEXT LIFE PATH EQUIPPED WITH KNOWLEDGE ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL WELL-BEING.

I

f remarriage is on your horizon, congratulations! It can be an exciting new adventure, as well as an opportunity to make key investment decisions alongside your spouse.

Remarriage is on the rise. Sixty-seven percent of previously married adults between the ages of 55-64 are remarried, up from 55 percent in 1960.1 People are living longer, and when they find the right partner again, they opt for matrimony.

Overall, women are less likely than men to remarry, with 64 percent of eligible men remarrying, compared to 52 percent of women. However, this 12-point gender gap was a 20-point gap in 1980, when only 46 percent of women had remarried, compared with 66 percent of eligible men.1 What’s this mean? Today’s women are embracing remarriage.

But it’s a choice born of freedom: Women who remarry have presumably been solely responsible for their financial wellbeing—at least for a time. We learned from UBS’s “Own your worth” report, which features research data on women who have been divorced or widowed, that nine out of 10 women felt good about themselves as they made more financial decisions on their own.2 If you are planning to remarry right now or even in the distant future, here are four actions you should consider taking before you exchange your vows.

Assess your financial baggage. Review for yourself how you participated in the financial decisions in your first marriage.

Were you happy with the arrangement? If not, what about

it frustrated you or left you unsatisfied? A second marriage can be a chance to revise your role in making important financial decisions, especially if you tended to take a backseat to your spouse in your previous marriage. In fact, 79 percent of women who remarry do take a more active role the second time around.2 Be clear on your financial goals. What do you want for your future? How does your marriage play into that? These are lofty questions. That’s why eight out of 10 women find it helpful to think about wealth along three different dimensions.2 Liquidity: The cash at your disposal, which you need for short-term expenses over the next three or so years.

Longevity: Savings and investments you can use for longerterm needs, from the next four years into retirement.

Legacy: The investments that will continue after you’re gone, and can help others with their needs.

Thinking through these dimensions helps you sort out what you aim to accomplish now and in the future. What do you want your legacy to be? How will you achieve these things?

Who are the people who matter most to you?

Have the important conversations. Have meaningful conversations with your soon-to-be-spouse. This may be second nature to you, particularly if you were able to have good discussions about finances in your first marriage. But deep-dive conversations about money still feel taboo for

some couples. Not only does each partner bring his or her own ideas about money and investing into the marriage, if it’s a second marriage and/or a marriage later in life, each partner already has quite a bit of life experience and financial history. Getting everything out into the open is key.

Increase your confidence in making investment decisions. Women often feel unsure about investing. Just 29 percent of women in heterosexual couples consider themselves highly knowledgeable about investing, and only 25 percent of women in same-sex couples say they’re highly knowledgeable.2 Over and over again, we’ve found that women lack confidence because they overestimate how much knowledge you need to make investment decisions. In fact, 85 percent of married women who abdicate to their spouses when it comes to making long-term financial decisions do so because they believe their spouses know more.2 The truth is, it doesn’t take nearly as much experience to make investment decisions as women think. It does, however, take confidence. If you started to develop that confidence after a divorce or in widowhood, make sure to keep building it and channeling it as you settle into a new partnership.

Life is long, and we often find ourselves with a second chance to find the contentment or adventure we’re seeking. Remarrying can be that opportunity. If you enter into matrimony with a solid plan around your financial goals and aspirations, the best is yet to come.

ebra Hook doesn’t just live for her work, she lives in it.

Her Coral Springs home doubles as a design studio and showroom for clients who live west of I-95 in Boca and nearby cities. She also recently completed another studio in Pompano Beach for customers who live closer to the ocean.

“When clients walk into my home, they instantly see what I can do and get a sense of my eye for design,” she says.

And while her home has been used in several films and music videos, that’s not what Hook believes sets her apart.

“My empathy toward others—my ability to appreciate where they’ve been, what they’ve experienced and how they became who they are today—is what allows me to design so well for my clients,” she says. “Understanding these things enables me to give them what they truly want.”

How do you go about envisioning a new design project?

I limit my distractions and avoid outside input. I just sit in the space and allow myself to see what only I can see. This is invaluable in the beginning stages because the magic lies in my unadulterated mind.

Projects you are currently working on? I am hard at work designing the mansion of actor/producer William Levy, as well as two incredible restaurants.

New design trends you love? There are two that stand out: One is the “eco ceiling,” which mimics frosted glass. They come in a variety of colors and can help make a space appear much larger. The other is wallpaper. My go-to spot is Atlantic Wallpaper in Pompano Beach. My mind is blown by the gorgeous new options they have (including 3-D versions) that can instantly transform a room.

How do you select art for your projects? Every space is different. Sometimes I bring in one of the talented artists with whom I regularly work and together we create something specific to the project. I also have a friend who owns an art gallery who helps me hand-select pieces. I consider this the fun part. Art and fixtures are the “jewelry” of a room.

Do you have your own art collection? Yes, and it reflects my love of old Hollywood. Upon entering my home, you are greeted by Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and other stars framed mainly in black and white.

Tell us about your new home studio? I love coastal homes and condos, so that prompted me to open a second location in Pompano to showcase my more modern designs. Town Center at Boca Raton is close, but I also love Aventura Mall and Bal Harbor Shops.

Being that I love art, I would tell them to visit our galleries and museums.

While they are not on the scale of NYC or Los Angeles, we have some pretty unique venues.
