happen to be a forever grateful person. Much of this gratitude stems from my childhood. My mother raised eight children on her own, and, needless to say, we didn’t have many tangible “luxuriesâ€? growing up. However, she made up for this through the experiences she created for us. On Christmas morning, we had so many gifts under the tree to unwrap, it seemed as though Santa Claus really did exist! She staged the scene with cookie crumbs and an GORV[ OKNM INCUUtUJG GXGP YGPV CU HCT CU VQ RWV YJKVG ĆƒQWT QP JGT Ć‚PIGTU VQ make it look like reindeer had left footprints. And while the gifts were nothing substantial, it was the experience with all of my brothers and sisters that made it so fun and memorable.

I still get excited by gifts, regardless of the price tag. With that said, it’s always nice to be able to treat yourself—or be treated—to a designer bag, shoes or another luxurious gift that sparkles!

Add saffron and rice and cook for 3 minutes. Add tomato sauce and mix.

Add broth, shrimp, salt and pepper.

Lower heat and cook for 16 minutes, trying not to move it and without letting it stick to the bottom.

Add mussels and cook for a few more minutes to open. Top with parsley and lemon wedges and serve.

Chef Daniel Boulud presents one of his favorite recipes of the season, a classic starter from the original Café Boulud in New York City. The recipe has since been offered on fall-winter menus at several of Boulud’s restaurants, including Café Boulud Palm Beach.

It’s a true Boulud signature that never goes out of style.

CHESTNUT, CELERY ROOT AND APPLE SOUP

Chef Daniel Boulud

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS: 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 medium onion, thinly sliced 1 medium leek (white part), thinly sliced 2 McIntosh or Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cut into ½-inch cubes 10 oz celery root, peeled, cut into ½-inch cubes

TO PREPARE:

1 bay leaf 1 thyme sprig Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg Salt and freshly ground white pepper ¾ pound peeled fresh chestnuts 2 quarts low-sodium chicken broth ½ cup heavy cream

Heat oil in a stockpot or large casserole over medium heat.

Add onion, leek, apples, celery root, bay leaf, thyme, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Stir occasionally for about 10 minutes or until onions and leeks are soft but not colored.

Add chestnuts and chicken stock and bring to a boil.

Lower heat to a simmer. Skim surface regularly for 35-40 minutes or until chestnuts can be mashed easily with a fork.

Add cream and simmer 5-10 minutes.

Discard bay leaf and thyme.

Purée soup until smooth. Then pass through a fine-mesh strainer. At this point, it should have the consistency of a velouté or light cream soup. Simmer over medium heat until thickened.

ART WEEK PREP For one week, the best of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s art is available to South Florida and its visitors. But what goes into getting a show off the ground? We caught up with Eric Smith, CEO of Redwood Media Group, which produces Spectrum, Red Dot and ArtSpot, to ask how it all comes together.

When did you start planning for this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shows? Right after last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shows GPFGF YG ICVJGTGF VQIGVJGT VJG UVCHH CPF C EQWRNG QH VJG GZJKDKVQTU CPF OCFG notes about what we can do to improve.

We had two entrances last year, one for

Spectrum and one for Red Dot, and now we created one single entrance. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll turn right to go into one show and go left to go into the other show. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be a really cool entrance with lighting and music.

What are some highlights that set your shows apart? We have a fashion show, which is totally fun. It takes place on opening night and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very artsy.

Fashion and art go well together. We also have ArtTalks and ArtLabs, which are experimental displays that are on view.

What are some of those trends?

Photography is really hot right now.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s some collaborating going on between photographers. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s such an interesting medium because a lot of it is digital, so you can create photography between two people across the world.

Usually, photography is a little less expensive, so I think today people are collecting photography like they collected NKVJQITCRJ[ KP VJG o U CPF o U How can visitors get the most out of the shows? Do not be intimidated to ask SWGUVKQPU 9JCVoU WPKSWG CDQWV QWT UJQYU is that a lot of the artists are there for you to talk to. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re talking to the person that created the work: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why did you create the work?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why did you use certain colors?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;How come you created it in a EGTVCKP UK\G!q p+U VJGTG C UVQT[ DGJKPF KV!q And that is the most interesting thing it the world.

ife takes interesting turns. Who would have thought that a classically trained violist would go on to head one of South Florida’s most successful property management companies? Such is the case for Leslie Kaminoff, founder and CEO of AKAM On-Site.

As an undergraduate majoring in music, Kaminoff worked part time as a building clerk at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He eventually went on to become its director of real estate. In 1983, Kaminoff founded AKAM Living Services (the parent company for AKAM On-Site), which quickly grew into one of NYC’s premier real estate companies. “I went from being a professional musician to a professional listener,” Kaminoff jokes about his career shift.

Listening, in fact, is one of the secrets to AKAM’s success, and Kaminoff takes pride in his open-door policy. “If an owner isn’t able to talk to me, in my mind, that is a problem,” he says.

Kaminoff and his team are not just problem solvers. They anticipate potential challenges and avert them before they happen. This takes tremendous foresight. Before Hurricane Irma, for example, AKAM was thorough in gathering information about the needs of its properties’ residents. “We were blessed,” Kaminoff says, regarding the intensity of the storm. “But if it had been a true disaster, we were well prepared.”

Despite tremendous growth, Kaminoff has never lost sight of both the identity and needs of his clients. “If you ask 10 real estate CEOs who their clients are, they will all name buildings,” he says.

“

“Our clients are not the buildings, they are the residents who live there. If 200 people live in a building, that’s 200 clients.”

Kaminoff also doesn’t take for granted the elevated standards his clients expect. “These are extremely smart people who have been successful in life, and they can be demanding,“ he says.

“We understand this and provide them with a personalized level of service that anticipates their needs.”

Just like mastering the viola, Kaminoff believes in picking one thing and doing it well. “It’s unrealistic to think you can be all things to all people,” he acknowledges. For this reason, AKAM maintains its focus by only managing luxury high-rises with an onsite manager. “You are dealing with someone’s home, their oasis and, in many cases, their largest investment,” Kaminoff says. “To give anything less than personalized service just doesn’t work.”

In 1998, when the company decided it was time to expand, Kaminoff and his team considered various markets.
