ACTRESS

DANIELLA MONET

Photographer: Tia Hollingsworth Wardrobe Stylist: Lauren Taylor Makeup & Hair: Lusine Galadjian Interviewed By: Aiyanna McClendon & Kayla Woolen

BUSINESS TALK What is one of your favorite things about being an actress, and entrepreneur? I love being able to make people feel things. Acting has lead in me in such a great direction, allowing for people to get to know me and hopefully trust the endeavors I pursue. Who or what inspires you to chase your dreams? My most recent inspiration is my son. I want him to grow up with a mom who uses her voice to make a difference. Why did you decide to start your acting career? I was about 5 or 6 years old when I started auditioning. I was a very outgoing kid with a lot to say. Once I got a taste of performing, I knew it was what I wanted to do. I loved pretending and entertaining people.

Issue 13 | 14

What is your dream-level goal for your career? I feel lucky enough to be able to say I'm on the right path to achieving my dream-level goal, career wise. In regards to acting specifically, I've always loved my comedic roles making people laugh is so rewarding. I definitely see myself back on a TV series in the near future. More importantly, balancing my time between acting, and growing ethical businesses is where my heart lies. Investing in plant-based businesses and helping grow those brands can have such a positive impact on our environment, and being that I just brought a little life into the world, its even more imperative that I do my part to make sure he has a healthy planet to grow up in. You have been busy! Tell us more about how you plan to juggle becoming a new mom and all of your other projects. Gio is a little over two months old as of now, and juggling being a mom and a business woman hasn't been easy. I didn't account for the time I'd spending nursing him, so as of now, I'm doing my absolute best to manage, which means using his nap times as my chance to catch up on emails, calls, etc.

Talk us through what your typical day looks like. A typical day starts with a cup of coffee, a good workout and a solid few hours on and off my computer and/or phone. I often touch base with partners at Outstanding Foods, Sugar Taco and Kinder Beauty, as well as my team who helps manage any acting or branding engagements in the queue. Throughout the day I'm breastfeeding Gio, caring for our two dogs, and managing my personal social media accounts, as well as the Kinder Beauty pages. I'm constantly connecting with new beauty brands to partner with on Kinder Beauty, which requires extensive product review to be sure the companies meet our ethical requirements, as well product testing to be sure they're up to our quality standards. Next my partners and I discuss how we plan to curate boxes based on season or theme. My day usually wraps up with some housework, cooking dinner and cuddling up on the couch to watch some home improvement reality show with my fiance. What is your brand mission? I want to make a plantbased lifestyle more accessible so that we can help reduce our carbon footprint, save the lives of animals and improve our all around health and well being. What's next for your career? When the timing is right, I look forward to finding the right sitcom.

MORE ABOUT DANIELLA What is your most favorite experience in your career to date?

Where can people find your website & social media channels?

I've been so lucky to be able to travel to so many beautiful places and work along side some very talented individuals. I may have had a slightly different upbringing than your average adolescent, but all of it has to lead to where I am today, and for that I'm grateful.

Interviewed By: Kayla Woolen

PAULINA SERRATO FOUNDER OF NEW

What inspired you to be a girl-boss?

How has social media helped you in your career?

My hardworking parents. Growing up in MĂŠxico and seeing how hard they worked to have their own businesses.

We mainly use Instagram to show potential clients photos and videos from past manicure events. This gives them a better idea on setup and how much people enjoy getting their nails done (you can totally see the sparkle on their faces)

Issue 13 | 24

YORK'S MOBILE

NAIL SALON :

MANIORPEDI

BUSINESS TALK What do you think sets your business apart from your competitors? We are all about people and products. Without amazing nail technicians and top quality products we would be just another mobile nail salon. We make sure all of our nail technicians are qualified to create the perfect mani or pedi. We want them to be friendly, warm, and caring. At the same time, the products we use are consistent we supply our nail techs with all the supplies needed. At maniorpedi.com we treat our employees like family, we truly care about them - something that almost never happens at nail salon. As a co-founder of MANIORPEDI, what is your roles and responsibilities? I feel like I do a little bit of everything - my roles consist of (but are not limited to): operations manager, HR manager, event coordinator, sales, inventory control, receptionist, supervisor, purchasing manager. Name it and I probably already do that lol, and honestly I absolutely love everything I do. I love my company, my nail techs, my clients. I have so much fun doing it.

What would you consider your greatest accomplishment and how did you get there? My greatest accomplishment thus far was the time we were called to do a manicure event for Tory Burch. They needed 20 nail technicians for 8 hours at 3 different locations. We were on our 1st year, still learning as we were growing, but never had a request this big! Having to manage so many people and product was exciting but at the same I couldn't sleep the night before. I was so anxious because I wanted everything to go smoothly. It was a crazy week leading to that day, trying to manage people and making sure we had enough product for everyone. Who would've thought that in one day we would be able do 480 manicures! WOW! How has your business grown within the last year? The business just keep growing and growing. All through word-of-mouth and SEO

Issue 13 | 25

MORE ABOUT PAULINA Where would you like for your company to be within the next 5 years, in terms of growth?

I would love to be in every corporate office in NYC. I think staying local is better for us because we can make sure our services are consistent and we can have more control over our company. What is one advice that you would give to someone who wants to open their own business? If there's a service or product missing in your life and you can't find it anywhere...create it. Don't be afraid. Don't listen to those making fun of you and your idea. Don't regret any decision you make. Everything will lead you to become a better person and better business owner. Who is your biggest inspiration? My parents - I wouldn't be here without them. They give me the strength and motivation to continue growing, to push myself to always to better. What has been the biggest lesson you've learned so far? To trust myself. You can have all the love and support from others, but if you don't trust yourself and decisions, you won't make it too far. Where can people find your website and social media channels? Instagram @maniorpedi.com

AND INTO THE FOREST I GO TO LOSE MY MIND AND FIND MY SOUL

KRYSTAL VON SEYFRIED Interviewed By: Kayla Woolen

When did you know you wanted to be in the entertainment industry? I knew I wanted to work in the Hollywood entertainment industry when I read about the horrible things that happen behind the scenes with actresses, actors and executives. Learning about how this industry is overrun with sexual predators made me determined to enter entertainment and keep my self respect while doing it. Most would think it's crazy that I read about how dangerous and messed up an industry is and then got determined to succeed in it, but I enjoy a challenge.

What does a day in the life of Krystal look like? It really depends, as all my days go differently! I'm blessed to have many different projects I'm currently working on. I do make sure to have a consistent morning wake up routine and a nightly routine, though. I do a quick chakra attunement meditation upon waking up and drink an herbal tonic with a bunch of super healthy herbs in it, like Jamaican Sea Moss, Sacred Bark, Sarsaparilla, Blue Vervain, etc. A good friend of mine studies natural medicine and makes it for me. I take Ormus as well. I then go about my day and do whatever I have scheduled for that day - working, errands, reading, writing or shooting.Â

BUSINESS TALK

Before I sleep I like to smoke a little bit of weed while listening to music as my only vice - I don't drink any alcohol and haven't for almost two years now. Sometimes I'll unwind with an accelerated audiobook if the mind is feeling restless in any way. I then make sure to have a good, deep meditation session and I pray and talk to God/Source directly, with great thanksgiving for all the blessings afforded to me in this life. And then I tuck in for bed, ready to slip into dreamworld. Where can people find your website and social media channels? People can find me at @krystalvon on Instagram! I don't have anything else right now and I like it that way.

What's your favorite thing to do in LA?

Do you have any winter time traditions?

My favorite thing to do in LA is probably people watching! I love sitting somewhere nice and just watching the people and faces that pass me by. It's fascinating to think about how every single person that walks by you has their own story and struggles. LA attracts people from many different places and walks of life, so I love seeing all that pass me by while I enjoy a green juice or something!

Honestly, not really. winter isn't big for me because I'm a born and raised Angeleno... we don't really have seasons. When I lived in Boston for college, the closest thing I had to a Fall time tradition was staying in my dorm room with a cup of hot chocolate, watching a movie and avoiding all my peers at school.

What's on the top of your bucket list?

I'm not sure! That's a name that can really stick so I'd really like to think about it. I'd want my name somewhere in the title, but tastefully done and not corny. Whatever it is, it can't be corny.

Going to the Great Pyramids of Giza!!! It's definitely at the tip top of my bucket list. I'm really into ancient Egyptian history, so seeing the pyramids firsthand would be nothing more than a dream come true. I'm actually planning a small trip with some researcher friends and shaman friends - hopefully we can get out there by the end of this year or early next.

Issue 13 | 48

If you had your on T.V. show, what would it be called?

What's your favorite quote? I have so many! I'll go with this one by Otto von Bismarck, the first Chancellor of the German Empire "When you want to fool the world, tell the truth." I really like it because I am extremely truthful in my interactions, almost to the point it's too truthful for most people to comprehend. They think I'm being too open, but I really don't see any other way to live and operate. Me being so truthful definitely confuses people and puts them in disbelief, but I still do it because being dishonest is something that is increasingly difficult for me as I mature on my path in life.

All the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow

SEHAR MALIK Interviewed By: Angela Brickley

How did you get started within the real estate industry? I was in the midst of helping a friend find a real estate agent. I noticed when I called a few agents, they never returned my calls. I thought to myself, if you are good with following up, then you would get business. I am great with following up, so I decided that this is something that I would like to solve by getting my real estate license. When I bought my first condo, my agent was less knowledgeable than me (I had found her by just walking into a realty firm). Again, I realized that I can find a way to do a better job.

Attending open houses was one of my favorite pass times. I would figure out why homes were not selling and check out what's on the market. I've been in the sales industry for over twelve years and I am good with people, which is why I got into real estate. I got over the issue of diving into a position that was one-hundred percent commission and really competitive. It worked out well because I love the work that I do. My clients are happy and they have turned into repeat clientele, because I give them the kind of service they deserve, the kind of service that I did not receive.

REAL ESTATE AGENT

BUSINESS TALK

Who or what inspires you to chase your dreams? My father, he’s very ambitious and he really pushed me to follow my dreams. What type of real estate do you specialize in and why did you decide to focus on that area? I specialize in one location in Toronto. Specializing in one location has been lucrative for me. Focusing on marketing one area is referred to as "farming" it. The length of time that you have your for sale sign up in a subdivision can bring in business from those who perceive you as the area's real estate expert. What is your favorite thing about being an entrepreneur? Having the freedom I desire to make my own schedule and work with my clients to help them find their dream home. What is your biggest goal for your career/business? My biggest goal as a real estate professional is to be honest and genuine with everyone I come in contact with and to operate my business with the highest degree of integrity. I strive to deliver world-class service and build long lasting relationships with everyone I meet.

Issue 13 | 52

MORE ABOUT SEHAR What does your current business model look like? I work under the traditional brokerage business model. Where I manage listings and marketing properties. This includes negotiating sales between buyers and sellers, review contracts, and arrange appraisals.

What is the biggest accomplishment within your career/business? Buying my first condo. Which has been the hardest thing I have ever done in this business on my own.

Talk us through what your typical day looks like. I start at 9am with a cup of coffee in hand. Then I start my day off by responding to emails and making phone calls. Then throughout my day I am updating my social media for new listings, coordinate appointments, showings, and meetings with buyers and sellers.

BECKY VAN DIJK

Tell us about We Are Travel Girls? My business partner Becky van Dijk and I launched WeAreTravelGirls.com in June 2016 with the dream of creating a global travel community to inspire, connect, educate and empower female travelers around the world. We publish stories written by female travel writers from all around the globe, feature inspirational women on our Ladies We Loves series, promote organizations making the world a better place on our Charities We Love series, feature thousands of female travelers on our popular Instagram page @WeAreTravelGirls, hold monthly Meet Ups in different cities around the world, host Travel Girls Getaways - affordable luxury and charity trips around the world, and in 2019 we proudly launched Travel Girls Giving the charitable branch of We Are Travel Girls.

FOUNDERS & CO-CEO'S:

WE ARE TRAVEL GIRLS Issue 13 | 60

What is your favorite thing about being an entrepreneur? Vanessa: Being an entrepreneur gives me the creative freedom to think outside the box. I love that my workday is different every single day and that I can try to use my skills to find ways to make the world a better place. I feel humbled to have the opportunity to inspire people through We Are Travel Girls and I feel blessed there are so many amazing female entrepreneurs around the world I can look up to for ideas and motivation. Being an entrepreneur also allows me to spend more time with my daughter, and to be totally candid I love that I can spend most of my workdays at home in sweat pants! Becky: I love the creative freedom that being an entrepreneur brings. I can come up with new ideas and implement them the same day this is something that you could not really accomplish working in a corporate environment, whist new ideas and innovations are welcomed it is often hard to get them implemented in a large business with multiple layers. I love that I can try things out, see what works, what doesn't and always be coming up with something new on a daily basis! I also love that I am able to bring my own passions, values and things I am good at into the business. For example, Vanessa and I felt strongly about finding a way to give back through our community so we launched Travel Girls Giving to encompass community fundraisers, spotlight non-profits and charities and add give back elements to our trips. Who or what inspires you to chase your dreams? Vanessa: Other female entrepreneurs inspire me, and people around the world that have dedicated their lives to helping others. The most inspirational book I have read is "Strength In What Remains" by Tracy Kidder. It is a riveting story of an incredible man named Deo who escaped the genocide in Rwanda / Burundi and went back years later to build a hospital and community, Village Health Works (https://www.villagehealthworks.org) to bring healthcare to his people and unite the Hutus and Tutsis. Deo's unbelievable story inspired me to change how I think about the time I spend on earth and moved me to try to find ways to give back and support worthy causes like Village Health Works.

BUSINESS TALK Becky: Myself. I find looking at what others are doing can be inspirational but it can also have a negative impact on your entrepreneurial journey. When I look at what my peers are doing I often find myself wondering why I am not where they are at, or why my business is not as successful as theirs and I think this comparison is something I think many entrepreneurs struggle with. So my advice would be to look to others to guide your direction and help motivate you to keep chasing your dreams, but ultimate stay focused on your own goals, your own measures of success to avoid this feeling we are not quite measuring up. I am also inspired by my mother, at 72 she still has not had a real day off in her life! She worked harder than anyone I have ever known as a single mother to allow me the privileges of growing up in a comfortable home and having delicious homecooked food on the table every day, even when she was working 18 hours+ a day / 7 days a week - my work ethic and drive to succeed definitely comes from her!

Why did you decide to start your own business? Vanessa: Becky and I saw a void in the market. At the time we met there were no travel sites that consistently shared travel stories from women around the world. So, we decided to create a website to promote female travel bloggers and bring together women from all around the globe, publishing five new, authentic, travel articles every week. Becky: I quit my job as a private banker in 2014 to travel through South America. To be honest I really didn't have a plan, just that after 10+ years in banking I needed a change! Throughout the six months trip, I thought about different business ideas and knew I wanted to create my own business that I could have control of, but nothing really stuck as an idea I wanted to pursue. In the meantime, since I loved to travel I started the We Are Travel Girls Instagram account as a fun way of saving destinations I wanted to visit and things just took off from there! To be honest, no real lightbulb moment just a natural progression from an idea I created as a hobby that proved to have the potential to become a real business!

VANESSA What is your dream-level goal for your business? I'd love the We Are Travel Girls community to become as well known as Travel + Leisure or CondĂŠ Nast. My ultimate goal in achieving this would be the opportunity to use our voice to give back through travel. We just launched our Giving Program wearetravelgirls.com/travelgirls-giving this year and we have thus far raised over $22,000 for charity so and I am excited to see what we can achieve in the coming years with the support of our amazing community members. What does your current business model look like? As founders of We Are Travel Girls Becky and I both wear a dozen hats. We handle admin, do brand collaborations, manage and host Travel Girls Getaways, host events and meet-ups, oversee our PR and our Travel Girls Giving Program along with so many other things! We have a junior site editor, as well as Becky's husband Ryan who is our senior editor, along with doing our web design and SEO. (Ryan is really incredible if you are looking for a topnotch web designer https://chalkandcanvas.com). What's next for your business? Travel + Leisure we are coming for you! BECKY What's next for your business? Hiring new people to the team to help us scale up our events and trips which are our 2020 focus! In addition, to We Are Travel Girls I have my own education business where I share business, entrepreneurial and blogging advice on BeckyvanDijk.com. I mentor women on a 1:1 basis and teach at our week-long Blogging Retreats, I now have an online Blogging Course and the next step for that is to create niche business focused weekend workshops for creative entrepreneurs! What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out? I have so much advice for someone starting out in business. First, if you have a career or job you are leaving, leave on good terms and with strong references and business connections - you never know when these might come in handy. Second, don't rush to leave that corporate job! There is so much to learn by working in a corporate environment and much of this will help you when you go it alone - even if you are desperate to leave to start your own thing, look at your role objectively and get involved in as many projects as you can that will help build skills in the areas you might need for your own business. Next, once you have taken the leap to start your own business don't compare yourself to anyone else. You business progression might be faster or slower than someone else's, but in the end, all that matters is that you are making the progress you need to to take your business to where you want it to go. And a few other pieces of advice, network as much as you can, attend events to connect with your peers and people in your industry, make press and PR a priority for your business, be kind and protect your reputation, find a mentor or someone who can advise you in your area and above all work hard! Success can sometimes come from luck, but most often from persistent hard work - keep pushing forward even when it feels like you are not getting where you want to. And finally, be prepared to let go. Many entrepreneurs keep pushing on their idea long past when they should have moved on. Don't look back at how much time you put into something and see it as loss, or failure if you give up. Think about what you learned from that experience and how you can use it in a future business! How to Define Your Written by: Angela Brickley

Interior Design Style Written By: Courtney Schrank

Issue 13 | 65

Imagine someone asks you “so what is your style”... You look at them with a blank stare and say “well… I don’t really know!” Your design style is more than what is sitting in your living room, rather it is a blend of that furniture and the clothes you wear, places you like to visit, colors and shapes you lean toward and so much more. In a world of seemingly endless design ideas where do you start? I’m glad you asked. Below you will find some of the more popular interior design styles with some identifying features. These are just a sampling as there are way too many styles to mention. Don’t think you have to choose only one either! In fact, a well-designed home should be a blend of styles, otherwise it will look like a catalog image from a particular vendor. Personally I am European Scandinvian meets Modern Minimalist with an edge. Sometimes I add more Classic elements while other times I lean towards Glam. The bottom line is that there is no answer here. Your style can also change and evolve over time! Check out the styles below and let us know what your newly identified style(s) is!
