Povl Eskildsen

A product of the classic Danish furniture tradition, Povl’s interest in design in general and furniture design in particular, started at a young age on the shop floor of his parent’s furniture factory in Salling, Denmark. Povl studied architecture at the renowned Aarhus School of Architecture. He initially worked with a number of Danish indoor furniture companies before turning his sights on outdoor furniture. Working with among others, Trip-Trap and Gloster, Povl brought a new sense of design into the outdoor furniture industry, in particular in teak furniture, where his designs brought the elegance & comfort that had been the norm in Danish indoor furniture for decades to a category where heft and weight rather than design and comfort had been key selling parameters.

Dick Björk

Dick´s interest in furniture design was ignited at an early age where he spent a considerable amount of time in his parent’s iconic furniture shop in Helsingborg, Sweden. Starting in his teenage years, Dick funded his passion for design by working after school and weekends assembling furniture, a task that laid the foundation for his passion for perfecting even the smallest of details. Dick went on to study metal work and trained as a cabinetmaker. Having worked as a craftsman at some of Sweden’s leading furniture producers, Dick turned to furniture design. His early work include pioneering mixed material outdoor furniture for legendary Berga Form of Sweden.

The Bumi dining chair is light, yet it stacks and provides a surprisingly comfortable sit, not only when seated straight on the chair, but also when seated at odd angles such as when conversing with a person to one’s side. The Bumi modular lounge stays true to the roots of its origins by retaining its organic look and feel with the practicality of a modular lounge where only one's creativity sets the limit.

Inspired by the simple and clean lines of Johan Von Spreckelsen’s La Grande Arche in Paris, the Java collection is available in both teak and ALU versions. The ALU framed versions are not only eye-catching, but also light, practical and durable. The sledge base allows for the chairs to be used on soft surfaces. The construction of the chairs and dining tables is reinforced with stainless steel components that provide the strength and durability required for many years of daily use. On the Java ALU dining chair, the integration of teak on the arms enhances comfort at this important contact point.

Mateos is a contemporary mixed materials collection that features frames made in aircraft grade aluminum accented with carefully selected plantation teak parts. Mia takes the clean architectual lines of our Java collection and applies it to dining. The dining chairs are available in both stacking and non-stacking versions. The stacking version is ideal for when one wants to be able to store the chairs in a compact manner. Thanks to its sledge base, the non-stacking chair is ideal for use on soft surfaces such as grass and sand. Both versions are light, yet designed and engineered to last. The collection is complemented by the clever bu et table which features soft-close drawers, an insulated icebox, pull-out shelf, ceramic work surface and a practical cutting board.

The conception of our Boho collection of poufs was driven by a desire to expand our community outreach program through which over 80 women support themselves and their families through the production of hand-crocheted products. The Boho tray can transform a Boho Pouf into an occasional table. The tray has handles that enable it to be used as a serving tray.

EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH HANDICRAFT

Our factory has always been close to the communities it operates in, and we know that there are many unemployed women in our community, many of whom have been left to support their families on their own. We cannot o er all of them permanent employment, but wanted to find a craft that could earn the women money from home between their daily chores. Hand crocheting was an obvious choice: it is fairly easy to teach and requires virtually no capital investment. Crocheted products are well sought-after locally, and Indonesia has a strong culture of producing beautiful handcrafted products.

Aside from making outdoor cushions for us, the women also crochet intricate purses and bags that are sold on the local markets. We’ve also shown them how to market and sell their products online via Tokopedia.com, the largest online trading site in Indonesia. Our ladies say it best themselves:

“There are thousands of stories behind our smiles – stories of how we struggle to survive, looking after our families, often as the only income-earner. We are strong, but in our lives, hope is more beautiful than reality. We often do double duty as mother and father, the backbone of the household, with everything revolving around our children; educating them, feeding them, loving them. Jobs in our community are scarce, and what jobs are available would take us away from our children, leaving them at home unattended and with nobody to help them with their homework. The factory in our area has given us new hope; empowering us and guiding us on earning an income, while working from home and being parents to our children. As you’ll see, we make high quality products because we are observant, thorough, sincere, proud and happy in every pull of the yarn we make. It never even crossed our minds that we could make a product that could be shipped across the seas – we hope you feel the warmth in every piece we make. By buying one of our products, you help us in our struggle to give our children a better life. A bunch of love from us, Strong Single Mothers.”

Hand crocheting is a time-consuming endeavour: a 50 cm x 50 cm scatter cushion takes roughly 18 hours. On average, the crochet cushions can supplement a woman’s income by US$ 80/month, in a community where the monthly income is typically around US$ 160.

The crochet covers are produced on a not-for-profit basis. We source an outdoor grade yarn, supply it for free to the women and pay them a fee for their work. For the products the women market themselves, we have negotiated favorable rates with a local yarn producer so the women can obtain raw materials at a much lower cost, than if they were to purchase the yarns from other sources.

On our Bumi and Java rope dining chairs, the wicker-rope is man-made, colorfast, UV resistant and recyclable. The wicker used is a braided polypropylene (PP) rope. The wicking properties of polypropylene ensures that the rope, despite its fabric feel, will dry quickly after a downpour. The application onto the frames is done by skilled craftsmen. A craft that has been passed on through several generations of skilled weavers.

We source our sling and cushion fabrics from leading outdoor fabric manufactures including Phifertex® and Agora®.

HAND CROCHETED COVERS

Our crochet covers are made from UV stabilized polypropylene yarns. The yarns are resistant to most solvents and have good color fastness. The yarns have been tested to 3,000 hours of UV exposure and carry a 3 year warranty.
