PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Stay Inspired

There is an unquestionable connection between art and the experience of luxury.

Sam dHand

Publisher & Editor-in-Chief Dream Homes of Canada LUXURY LIVING LUXE MEDIA NETWORK

Going to Art Basel in Miami was certainly a thrilling experience. Each year, roughly half a million pilgrims of art descend on this amazing city to experience the best of what the art world has to offer. It is without a doubt the most superlative and extensive of art exhibitions to be found anywhere in North America. This is where you experience the transformation of an otherwise stark man-made world into something exceptional and beautiful, worth beholding, worth experiencing and worth collecting. The rejuvenative, transformative and uplifting power of art just cannot be overstated. In my 12 years of publishing this beautiful magazine, I’ve been through countless expensive and exceptional properties, and I can tell you from my experience that there is one thing that holds true for virtually all of them. It matters not how exorbitant, or palatial these dream homes were, if they didn’t have art on the walls, they were little more than large lifeless structures without context, warmth or feeling. Art is that universal language that unites all humanity and holds sway over our minds no matter what corner of the planet we reside in or come from. But the power of art goes far beyond making places look pretty and invoking sentiments. Art is essential to the experience of luxury living. Take fine dining for instance. It is only when a Chef who has spent many years honing their expertise serves an exquisitely prepared dish presented beautifully on fine dinnerware on a cloth laden table served by an impeccably well-mannered and well-dressed server that our experience becomes special - it is only when something is elevated to the level of being “a work of art” that we experience true luxury. The same can be said about everything else in life - the automobile we drive is another example: If it didn’t employ the finest in engineering and materials manufactured to the highest of standards and with the strictest of adherence to quality and finishing, is it really a luxury automobile? My point here is a simple one. You experience luxury only when something is elevated in its quality to the level of art, be it gourmet cuisine, a fine wine, beautiful architecture, an exquisitely done home interior, or the Christian Louboutins on your feet. Add a little art to life.

CARLO GALASSO _ THE INVENTOR OF THE ONCE UBIQUITOUS SPORTS ‘CAR BRA’ AND UNASSUMING HEAD OF CALGARY’S FERRARI, MASERATI & ROLLS-ROYCE FAMILY OF SUPER-LUXURY AUTOMOBILE DEALERSHIPS

21

Rolls-Royce of Calgary celebrated a grand unveiling of the Spectacular Rolls-Royce Dawn recently. LUXURY LIVING MAGAZINE sat down for an EXCLUSIVE interview with the ‘one and only’ Carlo Galasso, principal & owner at the Rolls-Royce of Alberta and Ferrari-Maserati of Alberta, and the king of the ‘Car Bras’ from the 80’s.

R

Q: Bringing brands like Rolls-Royce, Ferrari & Maserati to Calgary took some audacity and vision…. what drove the decision and where did the inspiration come from? A: My inspirations came from a deep passion in my heart for Ferrari, 22 years ago. Since I was a little boy I dreamed of owning a Ferrari, that’s why I went to University. I studied to be a lawyer but never really practiced. I had a business opportunity in the middle of law school that sort of grabbed my attention and allowed me to make a lot of money very rapidly in a manufacturing business, it afforded me the opportunity to buy my Ferraris. I had a half dozen Ferraris back then so the brand asked me to get involved. One day my partner, Remo Ferri and I sat down together and decided that we should open a store - and

22

we did! From there on I got associated with Maserati and Rolls Royce as well. Q: How much of your passion for these particular cars is associated with your Italian heritage? A: I was born in Calgary but my parents are Italian and I’m proud to be both. I fight very hard for all my brands, including Rolls Royce, though they’re English in their heritage. It’s humbling & gratifying to know that my homeland created one of the greatest brands of all time in the sports car segment. We’re the most winning team in Formula One sport and motor sport racing and so it’s definitely special to have that connection. Q: Is it part of your plan to encourage a racing circuit here in Calgary? A: We used to have a race track and the city decided to close it down - since then there’s been all kinds of groups trying to re-fire it up. The difficulty is that sometimes motor sport racing tends to be seen as a rich man’s hobby but I think that’s a mistake, and you can quote me on that, because kids of all ages love to build their little tuner cars that are very inexpensive and they like to go race them. Without a proper facility

they’re going to continue to do that on the streets and bring great harm to everyone. That’s always alarming and it should be up to the government and the people involved to build a facility that allows a safer way to enjoy the sport. This is an idea that I’ve been trying to push out there and get some traction. It’s the same as going to play hockey in an arena. Q: So tell us about yourself, what were you like as a kid as far as cars were concerned? A: Well…when I was growing up I was a perfectionist. I liked things detailed…cleaned…polished. My bicycles were always looking detailed and shiny. Consequently, when my friends were building hot rods and fast cars. I was building pretty cars. It is important to me that a car be beautiful, so my focus was always the look… and I think that’s what caught my attention with Ferrari. It’s beautiful upfront and it delivers all this power and speed that you can extract on the race tracks. I believe that’s my connection of when I was growing up to where I am today. I built the ‘Car Bra’ in the 80’s. I was a hobby upholsterer and I used to restore old Corvettes and other cars. I had this knack for making things wrinkle free and perfect. So one day I tried to make a Car Bra pattern and I succeeded. Before I knew, I had car manufacturers calling me and offering me multi-million dollar contracts. I developed a reputation in the car companies for my attention to detail and high quality…I would always deliver high quality automotive accessories at a fair price, and the business grew from there and we started to make hood guards, visors and moon roofs as well. Q: Did you travel to Italy a lot when growing up? A: I went first when I was 10, it was an awful time for me…I didn’t want to leave Calgary because of all my friends here…and on July 6th and 7th that year there were two major airline crashes in Canada and I was extremely fearful of traveling in the airplane. So I’ll never forget my first trip…and I never travelled back there for quite a few years after. But now we frequently travel to Italy to see new vehicle launches, both for the Maserati and Ferrari - just this past year I’ve been there two times. Q: Can you tell us what has the experience of growth been like in Calgary. A: Good, it’s been very good because of the economic climate, I’ll be honest with you, people are afraid to show their wealth and so I think the uptake has been a little slower than we had all hoped. We still sold close to 10 Rolls Royces in a very short time which is amazing, especially when you think about the current economic climate. Q: Where do you Calgary going in the next five years? A: If I could predict that Annie, I’d be the wealthiest guy in town. My crystal ball is telling me to be extremely cautious and if I just keep my nose to the grindstone and work two times harder than I did last year, I should end up with about the same or better for the year. So in other words the economy is in a rough spot, there’s no doubt and the only way I’m going to correct is just by working harder, better, smarter. Q: Do you like to travel? What do you like to do on your own time? A: In a perfect world I like to spend more time with my son, family’s important to me, I like to take care of them, and a great day is when I can go somewhere with my son and have fun with him. Q: Who’s is your favourite Restauranteur in Calgary? A: Guido Panara at Da Guido - he’s probably a 40 year old friend of mine. He’s a very talented and extraordinary chef. He was raised in Italy and traveled all of Europe and was trained by the top chefs of Europe, he’s one of a very limited group of chefs around the world. Very few people know about him, we have a lot of talented chefs in Alberta, and he’s definitely among the top shelf guys.

I’m truly passionate about real estate; it makes me happy - Tanya Eklund.

_ Real Estate Powerhouse _ TA N YA E K L U N D Delivering Spectacular Performance Through

EXTRAORDINARY PASSION & DEDICATION In the tumultuous world of real estate, it takes a confident, energetic presence to navigate a stable course. And if there is one thing Tanya Eklund has, it’s energy. An inside-andout knowledge of the business and a kickin’ fitness level don’t hurt either.

25

“I’m truly passionate about real estate; it makes me happy,” says Eklund. As a Re/Max agent and Managing Partner of the Tanya Eklund Group, Eklund heads up a real estate powerhouse in Calgary, running a six-person ‘all-girl’ team that has handled some of the city’s most prestigious properties. “I call them my wonder women,” Eklund jokes. “This year, we’ll be the number one real estate team at the number one Re/Max office in the world.” But, as she tells her staff, “it’s not easy.” “I was just 20 when I joined [Re/Max],” recalls Eklund, who grew up in rural Alberta, and intended to become a lawyer. Her plans took a change of direction when an opportunity in the then-booming Calgary market presented itself through a friend. Negotiating real estate deals was a skill that came naturally for Eklund’s sharp mind and energy. “I thought if I want to be the best, I have to work with the best,” says Eklund of her decision to join Re/Max Central. “I didn’t know that in two years, you just get your feet wet. It took me almost four years to learn the business part of it.”

26

Today, Eklund successfully balances work, motherhood, several businesses, and a serious fitness hobby. “I was flat out last year raising a newborn and running a business,” she admits; “But I believe I’m a better parent because I work.” And she credits her own parents for instilling her with the values that have gotten her to where she is. “My husband and I have an amazing work ethic from our parents, growing up in a farming community. My parents inspired me; they wanted me to succeed, to be happy.” Eklund has listed her share of magnificent estate homes, such as the stunning, $8-million Aspen Estates mansion of golfer Stephen Ames, and Mike Holmes’ one-of-a-kind home designed and built in Elboya. But with Alberta’s recent downturn, she is branching out beyond the luxury market. “Luxury is part of Calgary but it’s not all of Calgary,” says Eklund. Part of her diversified portfolio is in the city’s urban core. “I live and breathe inner city,” she comments. And though she predicts “a tougher year for 2016, she sees it as opportunity. “I think there’s going to be better value in homes and better deals.”

To escape chilly Alberta winters, Eklund and entrepreneur husband Chad Hughes regularly travel to sun-soaked spots including Maui, Phoenix, and Sikamose. She tells us of a memorable recent stay in Southeast Asia’s Aman resort (“just WOW!”); and of meeting icon Richard Branson during a stint to Nekker Island. A dedicated athlete, Eklund also finds stress relief in running. “It’s a huge part of my life. I work out problems when I’m working out. It gives me clarity.” Another big part of her life is giving back, having volunteered as a relief worker in Africa and been part of an initiative to keep high risk teens in school.“I’m big into

volunteering in the Calgary community. I definitely see that continuing as my kids get older.” Eklund’s vision for Calgary is optimistic. “I’m hoping that what’s happening with the industry is going to make people think outside the box. Calgary could be so much more than just oil & gas.” As for her own future, she looks forward to growing her business, expanding her investment portfolio to explore new ventures, and most of all, ‘continued freedom.’ “I love what I do and I see myself always involved in real estate in some capacity, whether it’s selling or investing.”

For owner Martine Hul, launching a jewellery line has long been the ultimate dream. The dream became reality in 2001, when the Italian-Belgian fine jewellery brand Hulchi Belluni was conceived. The name ties together the brand’s three founding inspirations: Martine’s name, ‘Hul’; the traditional

Shui elements: water, fire, wood, earth, and metal. The jewels’ vivid colors and natural glow invokes the live energy of wood and the power of fire in their radiant glow. Wave-like organic curves temper the blaze with the soothing sense of water, while the interplay of delicate patterns and luxurious gold brings in the peaceful element of earth and cool smoothness of metal. Through all of these inanimate forces, , Hul’s creations pulse with a very human energy; a powerful emotion conveyed within every piece. Five new exquisite collections embody Hul’s artistic vision. The supremely feminine Farfalle line is a tribute to the butterfly, with fragile forms evoking its weightless nature and the soft flutter of wings. The exotic Monoi collection spotlights the heady Tahitian flower, taking on various forms: from intricate strand earrings topped with a trio of graceful blossoms and capped with dainty butterflies, to whimsically chunky rose gold bangles and rings on which a floral diamond pave motif resembles a crafty appliqué.

The world of flora continues to inspire in the flamboyant Fiori collection - a colorful bouquet bursting with vivid jewelled blossom, set on a subtle base, uplifts and captivates with its juicy, vibrant hues in all their crystalline depth. On the other end of the spectrum, demure florals give way to a seductive edge, with the Corsage line that takes fine jewellery in a bold direction of fantasy. With a nod to antique romance, the collection reinvents the corset in stunningly literal interpretations. Sleek plates of wide cuff bracelets and rings are tantalizingly laced with corsetry ribbons of

gold and pavĂŠ diamonds; a look that is both old-world Victorian and daringly modern. A more abstract side of Hulchi Belluni reveals itself in the Tresore collection, where clusters of slightly irregular gold and pave ‘bubbles’ resemble polished river stones, and spherical beads link in simple yet refined stretchable bracelets. Finally, the Illusion collection brings forth an enigmatic charm, with smartly set and expertly cut diamonds combining to create the impression of one large stone in simple yet sophisticated designs.

LUXURY HOTELS & RESORTS

A CELEBRATION OF ART AT _

HOTEL ARTS _ CALGARY’S

UNIQUE & CHARMING BOUTIQUE HOTEL OFFERS A

SPECTACULAR

ART-FILLED EXPERIENCE WORDS :: KATE MISSINE

38

O

“On my way back from attending the Art Basel in Miami,” says Sam Dhand, Publisher of Luxury Living, “I was still reliving the wonder of that spectacular celebration of

art and talent.” Sam was stopping over in Calgary; but with the amazing art-filled experience fresh in his mind, it would be a pity to stay in a bland hotel room devoid of personality. Luckily, he was headed to the Hotel Arts – a charming boutique hotel right at the heart of Calgary’s hip Victoria Park neighbourhood where, true to its name, he would continue to be immersed in artistic expression.

39

40

“It was apt, and reaffirmed my belief that art is an imperative part of living and it makes everything beautiful,” says Sam of his stay. Equal parts place to stay and artistic showcase, the hotel’s distinctive flair – bold, vivid, one-of-a-kind art – permeates throughout the space, imbuing a creative energy that keeps the lushly outfitted rooms from becoming just another faceless hotel chain. Right at the entrance, visitors are greeted with a show-stopping, hand-blown glass light fixture by local artist Barry Fairbarn, uplifting the room with colorful, vibrant pattern. Beyond, in the lobby, a larger-than-life painting of a horse by Bruce Pashak hangs in the lobby, an allusion to Alberta’s deep equestrian tradition. A socially significant work graces the entrance to the hotel restaurant and bar: a flag of civil rights activist Martin Luther King is depicted, surrounded by a golden halo, in the King painting by Tim Okamura.

41

All together, the Hotel Art’s collection

is

a

captivating,

unparalleled experience that Sam calls “a veritable extravaganza, a celebration in art every direction you look.” But while it’s easy tempting to spend hours gazing at the gallery-like walls, a tired traveller needs their rest – and the tower’s 185 rooms beckon to put your head down, along with the flawless service. The clean, modern yet impeccably luxe interiors, recently renovated and designed by B+H CHIL, show contemporary lines and a soothing palette of greys, whites, and charcoals – the perfect canvas backdrop for the unique artwork. BC’S FINEST WINES & VINEYADS

FLAGSHIP WINES OF THE OKANAGAN

LUXURY LIVING magazine went on a quest through the

okanagan valley exploring the ‘best of the best’ in viticulture to bring you an exclusive list of BC’s Finest ‘must have’ wines for your cellar.

WORDS: KAYLEIGH HALL

_ MISSION HILL FAMILY ESTATE _ Mission Hill, established in 1981 by Anthony von Mandl, currently makes the most expensive wine in the Okanagan. Located in West Kelowna, overlooking Okanagan Lake, its setting mirrors the austerity of an Italian monastery. I reach Ingo Grady, Mission Hill’s wine educator, in a Vancouver taxi just having arrived from Manhattan, where he and von Mandl were launching a new wine. Grady, is an eloquent spokesperson for the winery. When asked about its flagship wine, he doesn’t hesitate. “Oculus is what we get up for in the morning.”

73

74

Designed to age for ten+ years, Oculus is a singular wine considered to be Canada’s “first growth”, an achievement which reflects the winery’s status. The grapes for this wine are hand selected from the von Mandl family’s estate vineyards on the east side of Osoyoos Lake. After a rigorous fermentation and aging process, with only 4% of grapes being selected from the harvest, the wine is already 19 months old by the time it is bottled. It is then aged for another two-three years and finally released after four. The 2011 vintage has been released this year. Next year, the 2012 vintage will be released, and so on. Oculus has been made every year since 1997, with fifteen vintages in total. “The analogy of a luxury brand is correct -- Mission Hill is the living definition a luxury brand of wine. It’s priced to its stature,” says Grady. The current 2011 Oculus released is priced at $125 retail and up to $250 in restaurants. www.missionhillwinery.com

_ LA STELLA / LE VIEUX PIN _ La Stella is a boutique winery established in 2006 and located on Osoyoos Lake. The winery will soon be the first to offer the benefit of visiting by floatplane or boat. It produces top quality wines from the grape varietals of Tuscany. As part of its innovative branding, each blend in the portfolio is named after musical terms, reflecting the unique character of the wine: Allegretto, Maestoso, Vivace, Fortissimo, among others. Rather than simply use the grape varietal: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, etc. to describe its wines, the consumer is enticed to enter the story of each wine. Thus Fortissimo, as you would expect, is an inspired blend that is full of force and life, delivering a punch. This is the gesamkunstwerk that is La Stella. La Stella’s sister winery, Le Vieux Pin focuses on varietals from the Rhone Valley and is situated on the Black Sage Bench, near Oliver. Its wines are underscored by the great personalities of French wine, capturing that essence and tradition, infused with the fruit and character of the New World. Each boutique winery produces

only 5000 crates per year and shares the same core staff including viticulturist and wine maker, Severine Pinte. Rasoul

Salehi,

general

manager, describes the circumstance of crafting wine in this pocket desert and the challenges of its marginal climate and short growing season. “10 years ago we started without a business plan, and with passion as our driving force, we set out to create the dream of exceptional wines… the South Okanagan plays a unique role in the wine world. There are elements, which make it New World – long days due to its northerly position above the 49th parallel - daytime high temperatures- and Old World - cooler desert nights. This duality makes it a distinctive region.”

“We are not here to reinvent the wheel. Having said that, this is the wild, wild west. We value the spirit of experimentation; rules and bureaucracy can hold you back. _ CULMINA _ What do you do when you have 35 years experience in the wine industry, been the CEO of Jackson Triggs, and decide to retire? You take what you have learned, hone your knowledge by consulting the best in the industry who helps you find the best land, study its terroir and you open another winery. The Triggs family, Don, Elaine, and Sara, established Culmina Estate winery in 2006 (the same year Mr. Triggs attempted retirement), as the culmination of a life-long passion for wine. Culmina is a 56-acre, family estate winery composed of 44 micro blocks each averaging 1.23 acres, located in the South Okanagan’s Golden Mile Bench. In consultation with old friend and renowned viticulturist Alain Sutre, Don and Elaine scoured the region for the perfect spot to plant a tour de

force vineyard. “We prospected and carried out analysis on 5 sites from Penticton to the US border to find a virgin site with the highest potential for growing icon-quality Bordeaux reds. From there, a year of exhaustive research on the site dictated what we should be growing where, as opposed to simply planting what we ‘wanted’ to grow where.” While conventional vineyards plant 1,296 vines per acre, Culmina planted 2044. The rationale? Increased vine density forces competition between the vines, pushing the root systems deep down into the soil, and in turn, encouraging more terroir to be expressed in the yielding fruit. Culmina has committed to rigourous sustainability efforts, including their having achieved ‘salmon safe accreditation’ in 2014 – one of the first BC wineries to do so. “Passing on sound environmental legacy to our children is of vital importance – from our dryland farming experiment, to the precision irrigation techniques to reduce consumption, and even with the addition of electric cards to our employees, sustainability underscores everything we do at Culmina.” “Everything about Culmina has been dedicated to sustainability and being environmentally responsible. From our micro block farming with intensive soil monitoring to the electric cars, which our employees drive A bottle of Culmina’s “Hypothesis” 2012 sells for $59 retail and up to $150 in restaurants www.culmina.ca

_ TANTALUS _ Tantalus could be regarded as the Garden of Eden of the Okanagan wine industry. The site was first planted to table grapes in 1927 when it was called Pioneer Vineyards, making it the oldest continuously producing vineyard in BC. Eric Savics then established Tantalus winery in 2004, located in southeast Kelowna. “We consider ourselves the new pioneers of the BC wine industry,” shares general manager, Jane Hatch, “Our vinifera vines are 40 years old, some of the oldest in the valley but we have benchmarks which make us contemporary: in addition to our state-of-the-art winemaking practices, we forego the use of herbicides and pesticides and we promote ecological biodiversity by incorporating honey bee hives and a mature 10 acre forest in our vineyard.”

80

The premium quality winemaking and eco-driven ethos is reflected in the winery and tasting room. As BC’s first and only LEED certified winery, Tantalus’ sleek facility completed in 2010, promotes energy efficiency and has a positive impact on the health of its occupants. The result is a piece of architecture, which shows both sustainability and a modern aesthetic, augmented inside the tasting room by housing artwork from significant Canadian artists. The estate is 75 acres and uses 50 acres for grape production. Its backbone is in its inherited, old vine plantings – Riesling, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With new plantings in 2005, Tantalus now has considerable clone variation as well as some of the oldest plantings in the Okanagan Valley. The result? The success of its Old Vines Riesling (one of Canada’s best Rieslings) and other high quality varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. _ PAINTED ROCK ESTATE _ Upon retiring at 39 years old, John Skinner turned his attention to establishing his own winery, uncovering a formula in his research that seemed to click. “I looked at the top wineries in the world and found that the estates only used 25 acres and never grew bigger. Both Petrus in Bordeaux and Harlan Estate in Napa Valley do this and yield only 6500 crates of their finest wines. I thought, ‘if it works for them, why not us?’ “ Painted Rock is situated on a steep bluff of land perched above Skaha Lake, at the south end of Penticton. Purchasing the land in 2004, Skinner transformed the former apricot orchard into a thriving vineyard under the direction of Valerie Tate. Top Bordeaux consultant Alain Sutre was then brought on to oversee the integration of

_ POPLAR GROVE _ Poplar Grove was established in 1993 and is perched on the edge of the Naramata Bench. Its stunning tasting room and adjoining restaurant, The Vanilla Pod, offer unparalleled views of Lake Okanagan and Penticton from an elegant modern building. The winery is an embodiment of the estate’s flagship varietal, The Legacy – its flagship wine. Poplar Grove is a medium sized winery, with wines being made from 100 acres of estate grown fruit in its home vineyard and estate-owned land in Osoyoos. It offers a variety of wines: 5 reds, 3 whites and 1 rose, and select single varietals for its wine club members. “Above all else,” says general manager Jacquie Carlson, “Poplar Grove over delivers on quality.” Its current owner, Dr. Tony Holler, has spared no expense towards increasing quality and production. This large investment was used to update equipment for winemaking. Today, Poplar Grove has a state-of-the-art wine making facility complete with a French Oak barrel program that allows for graceful wine aging. 500 cases of The Legacy are produced each year. They are aged for up to 5 years before release, which means that the estate does the aging for the wine lover. Poplar Grove’s winemaker, Stefan Arnason, has been with the winery for 8 vintages, ensuring consistency in quality. Currently, Poplar Grove is focused on export to China, Japan, Hong Kong and soon US and Europe. HOME OF THE FORMULA 1 RACING McLAREN SUPERCARS _

McLAREN

TECHNOLOGY CENTRE _ AN IMMACULATE FACILITY WITH A DYNAMIC & FUTURISTIC DESIGN WORDS: KATE MISSINE

86

I

In 1951, Bruce McLaren, aged 14, entered a hill climb in his New Zealand hometown, seated behind the wheel of a 1929 Austin 7 Ulster. Three years later, he won his first race; and in 1959, joined the Cooper Formula 1 team to become that year, at only 22, the world’s youngest

driver

to ever win the Grand Prix.

87

88

Over 60 years later, Amanda McLaren, Bruce’s daughter, stands as the ambassador of the McLaren brand – a name that conquered the racing arena and rose to the top of the fastest and best, her father’s legacy. The company is now in the hands of CEO Ron Dennis, who took the reins in 1980 following Bruce McLaren’s tragic crash on a training circuit. But

Bruce’s sportsmanship spirit and his pursuit of victory and excellence in everything from the racetrack to the smallest mechanical detail are still present at the McLaren headquarters’ every turn; his dedication to engineering and love of the racing realm woven inextricably into the company’s mission and day-to-day operation.

89

90

Case in point, the headquarters itself: the McLaren Technology Center, to be precise, or MTC, an all-new facility that opened its doors in 2004. Reminiscent from a bird’s-eye view of a giant yin-yang shape, a crystalline lake wraps around a futuristic, curved glass structure, forming a perfect circle. More than a head office or production center, the 57,000 square feet space, housing over 1,500 talented employees, is the heart of the McLaren family; a tribute to the brand’s past and a vision of its future. The tech innovation and engineering precision of McLaren racecars permeates every aspect of their birthplace. The azure lake outside the windows is not just for scenery; its role is to dissipate heat generated by the on-site, 3-megawatt wind tunnel. Even the waterfall is not merely decorative, serving to aerate the water to prevent algae build-up. Inside, everything is geared up to perfect the speedy machines: state-of-the-art racing simulators, Formula 1 race bays, design studios and labs, where the Formula 1 engineering team is said to add a new part to their cars every 17 minutes. In the adjacent production center, the handson magic takes place as McLaren road cars are built precisely by hand. Greeting visitors at the entrance is the “boulevard”: a line-up of Formula 1 legends that immortalizes McLaren’s history and triumphs, including Bruce’s very first Austin Ulster. And McLaren has plenty of triumphs to celebrate. The F1 GTR, for instance, that conquered Le Mans in 1995; or the revolutionary carbon monocoque, first of its kind, that initially took 3,000 hours to make. Today, it takes only four hours to produce the 650S carbon MonoCell. It’s one of the many testaments to the company’s incredible technological progress and unyielding sense of adventure and challenge. Bruce McLaren would be proud.
