PUBLISHER’S NOTE

_

As crisp fall air sets in and the excitement of the holiday season beckons, there has never been a better time to live in Vancouver. More than ever before, we’re seeing the city’s growth explode before our eyes; its energy young and vibrant, and the appetite for fine living in Vancouver has come of age. Worldly, savvy consumers, demand exclusive accoutrements to soaring lifestyles, and it is their appreciation for impeccable quality that has, in no small part, propelled Vancouver’s luxury market to the level of such world-class metro centers as New York, Paris, London, and Milan.

Publisher & Editor-in-Chief Lloyd Bruce Magazine LUXE MEDIA NETWORK

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of two giants in the industry. Robert Ledingham was a visionary and an inspiration to the design community and city of Vancouver. Oscar de la Renta, a pioneer and creative genius, touched many lives throughout the world. They will be dearly missed.

The time to indulge and embrace the finest of what Vancouver has to offer is now. And it is here, as we stand on the cusp of exciting change and new horizons for this beautiful city, that we are thrilled to unveil Lloyd Bruce Magazine. Our focal theme, luxury, is a personal passion of mine, having published numerous luxury oriented media products in the last twelve years, in celebrating it, we celebrate not only quality and refinement of the highest order, but also the infinite commitment and talent of those involved – the artisans, craftsmen, designers, and visionaries who enhance our lives with their incredible creations. It is my honor to be embarking on this adventure with Douglas, whose enthusiasm and energy have been pivotal in bringing this product to fruition, as well as the fantastic times we have had throughout this process. We also owe this debut to everyone we featured in this issue. Meeting and speaking to such exemplary individuals, each at the apex of their particular fields, has been the highlight of this experience. I can only hope that our admiration for each of them shines through the pages as readers get a glimpse of their extraordinary worlds. As we move along, we are always looking forward and to the future. The gears are already in motion for our next quarterly publication for the upcoming season. Flip through, enjoy, and stay tuned. My best regards to you and your loved ones.

EXQUISITE DESIGN & INSPIRATION

ROBERT BRUCE MCKAY DELIGHTS WITH HIS SIGNATURE COLLECTION Text by Alexander Villegas | Photography by Jamie-Lee Fuoco

A

s a child of Vancouver and grandson of the arts, it’s no surprise that Robert Bruce McKay has grown to become one of the most sought after interior designers in the city. One could say that McKay’s path was paved before his conception. His grandfather was a carpenter who taught McKay to work with hands; his grandmother was an accomplished artist who taught him art theory from childhood. In addition, McKay’s parents owned antique stores here in Vancouver where he first developed a fascination for unique items. “It’s pretty much in my blood,” says McKay. “Design was always a really important part of our home, making things look beautiful, making art look beautiful.” McKay then found out he could turn his passion into a career, and started working as a window dresser in high school --a job he used to do for the very discounted price of love at his parents’ store-- and then went to work in the fashion industry. From there, McKay transitioned to interior design and has been working in the field for the past 20 years. In that time, McKay has furnished numerous homes, condos, yachts and penthouses throughout Vancouver and the Americas. While each room has the McKay touch, no two are ever the same. “I don’t do any cookie cutter sort of design,” McKay says. “I don’t have that philosophy. My design represents you, not me. I just help interpret.” This can involve spending five months getting a handmade silk rug from Nepal or designing a room’s scale, balance, color, texture and lighting around a family heirloom. Above all though, McKay aspires to make a comfortable living space for his clients.

31

32

“It can’t be stuffy and rigid... I want you to feel comfortable, set your glass on the table or put your feet up.” Aside from comfort, McKay focuses on timelessness, avoiding trends and opting for a philosophy of sophisticated constantly evolving design. “I never want a home to look like it was done it 2014, because in 2018 it’s going to look dated. It’s better if it looks like it’s evolved over time … like you didn’t go out and buy the whole set of something. You’ve added the

33

34

pieces, you’ve worked on different textures and layering.” “That way, in five or six years you can pluck out a piece or two and put in a piece or two, and it just evolves.” McKay’s professional career also adheres to this evolutionary philosophy. McKay noticed a gap in Vancouver’s high-end furnishing market and is hoping to fill it with a collection that bears his name. The Lloyd Bruce brand is looking to expand with a signature collection of furniture that McKay hopes will be carried in stores across North America. To comply with his stringent standards, McKay is travelling to Milan and Paris to meet with manufacturers. “We’ve always been selective with who we work with,” McKay says. “I think furniture is an investment. When it’s a quality, beautiful piece of furniture, it can be passed down through generations.” The Robert Bruce McKay Signature Collection; sophisticated, elegant, and above all, timeless.

BEWARE OF YOUR

MOTHER-IN-LAW SHE MAY HOLD THE KEY TO YOUR FAIRYTALE Text by Sharon Miki | Photography by Jamie-Lee Fuoco

A

s is the case with most magnificent things in life, true love can awaken in a glittering instant—and sometimes the wedding of a lifetime can bloom into betterthan-real reality just as swiftly. Vancouver entrepreneur William Miller was sure from the moment he met Betty Frances that she was the jewel of his life, so when an unexpected

career opportunity proposed to take him abroad for the spring, he knew that he wanted to solidify their love and make her his bride before his departure. So, with a little help from his infinitely refined mother, William amazed Betty with a lavish whirlwind New Year’s Eve engagement and same-day wedding befitting of their radiant love.

37

38

Waking Up to Yes Once William had decided to marry the love of his life, he set to creating the perfect plan to thrill and delight Betty. He envisioned a celebration as unique and dazzling as his bride, so he turned to his elegant and vivacious mother, Grazia—who had flown in from Brazil for the occasion—for advice. Together, William and Elise orchestrated a New Year’s Eve that no one would ever forget. The morning of December 31 began in Betty’s favourite way: dreamily lounging with William in their warm, plush bed. Just when Betty thought that life couldn’t be more auspicious, William surprised her with a sumptuous breakfast in bed, with a glittering twist—a sparkling five-carat diamond ring. Overwhelmed with the scintillating beauty of both the ring and the moment, Betty felt glistening tears of pure euphoria well around her enigmatic hazel eyes. “Yes,” she whispered, and the festivity began. Another Joyous Surprise Still aglow with the jubilation of the morning, Betty and William met Grazia on a luxe Monte Carlo 5 yacht for a celebratory luncheon. As the happy couple enjoyed their day, William revealed another fabulous surprise to Betty— when they share their first kiss of the New Year at midnight that evening, it would be as man and wife. Countdown to a New Year—and a Lifetime of Love The wedding was lovelier than anything Betty had ever imagined. Grazia had overseen the wedding’s picturesque, ultra-romantic décor, much to Betty’s delight, as she had often confided in her future mother-in-law the details of her dream day.

39

40

The couple looked as luminous as the event felt. Betty’s wedding gown was one-of-akind: a breathtaking couture Dean Renwick gown in snow white, with an elegant lace skirt. William made a striking groom in head-to-toe custom Tom Ford. Grazia was a stunning mother-of-the-groom, bedecked in a chic, gleaming cream-coloured gown and luxurious furs and jewels. Grazia had thoughtfully invited the couple’s closest friends and family for the intimate and elegant evening, under the pretense of a New Year’s Eve party. So, together in front of everyone that they cared for, Betty and William pledged their love and commitment to each other. It was a flawless testament to their love.

41

42

The bride’s wedding gown is from the Dean Renwick Couture Collection. The groom is dressed in the Tom Ford Couture Collection from head to foot. As the wedding wound down and the New Year rang in, William let Betty in on one final surprise: Grazia had gifted the spectacular yacht to the couple to commemorate their marriage and encourage their travels, and they would be enjoying it on a honeymoon down the Pacific Coast. Elated, Betty embraced her new mother-in-law, who had not only given her the wedding of her dreams in the most exciting way, but had also given her the ultimate gift—her very own Prince Charming for life.

or nearly a century, Fendi has stood as a cornerstone of Italian couture. Started by Edoardo and Adele Fendi in 1925, the brand has launched from its modest beginnings as a fur and leather shop to a multinational sensation. Its luscious, impeccably tailored furs and icon-status accessories like the Fendi Baguette and Spy bags have gained a cult following among those in the know, making a lasting imprint on the world of high fashion. Sixty-five years later, the Rome-based fashion house has emerged with a new dimension for its signature product line. Joining forces with Italian high-end furniture producer Luxury Living Group, Fendi has made its mark in the realm of interiors with the Fendi Casa Home

Collection – a line of exclusive furnishings and decor, meticulously crafted and intricately detailed – and no less impressive than its couture counterparts. Created with the idea of enhancing interior spaces in the same way as its wearable fashions, Fendi Casa embodies a unique approach that reinterprets unmistakable Fendi style. In a nod to its most notable pieces, furnishings are accented with cheeky details like the brand’s double ‘F’ logo and the iconic spy bag fastener. The long-standing Classic collection shows off traditional forms highlighted with exclusive leathers, Selleria stitching, and embroidery, while the updated Contemporary collection presents sleek clean lines, swathed in plush fabrics, furs, and precious skins.

Rounding off the ambience are textiles and decor accessories, exquisitely designed with unwavering attention to detail: Fendi furs, Murano glass, and skillful lighting systems add finishing touches to define the essential Fendi space. Ninety percent of Fendi Casa pieces are handcrafted by Italian artisans, using traditional techniques passed down through generations. For 2014, Fendi Casa unveiled its latest collection that combines aesthetic influences of Italy, New York, and Britain, adding a new collaboration with designer Thierry Lemaire to its ongoing partnership with Toan Nguyen. Strong, powerful lines softened by curved edges prevailed, and lavish materials such as ebony, marble, leathers, and furs continued to figure prominently, extending to some novel applications such as fur-encased cushions inspired by Fendi’s runway pieces. A number

of new colors were introduced, including soft French blues, deep burgundies, and a vibrant orange red, set off by accents of greys, bronzes, quartzes, and brass, while an array of contrasting textures, including a 3D-effect cube pattern, metallics, ‘destroyed’ jacquards, and matte leathers added visual and sensual stimulation. Thierry Lemaire’s most notable contributions to the collection included the Star table, a mesmerizing creation of Ebony Makassar featuring a star-shaped polished brass base, and the sharply sculptural Artù sofa and chair. The Fendi Casa Contemporary collection saw some new additions by Toan Nguyen, including the cozy and intimate Cocoon sofa. Mirrored table tops, the new Faubourg sofa, and the Sabrina chaise lounge were among the other dramatic pieces completing Fendi Casa’s 2014 offerings.

A TUSCAN HEART & SOUL A CONVERSATION WITH CULINARY ARTIST & LEGEND

UMBERTO MENGHI Text by Amber-Lea Nielsen

C

ulinary legend Umberto Menghi sits behind his desk seasoned and sure. Though a world-class connoisseur of authentic Italian cuisine, Vancouver is where Menghi has shaped more than a legacy; along with his birthplace of Tuscany, it is the city he calls home. In his clean-lined office, with blueprints for his upcoming restaurant Il Giardino spread across his desk, Menghi discusses food, travel and business all the while reliving achievements that have surpassed his wildest dreams. Touching on culinary inspiration, he shares stories from his childhood, noting that his mother was a very good cook. “Lunch was always at one o’clock and dinner at eight,” he says. “Like it or not, the food was on the table.” It was a sign of respect and peace, a place where you could sit down and express yourself, Menghi remembers. “We weren’t rich and we weren’t poor, we had food and we had family,” he explains. “I was born after the war of course, and there was a new life in Europe,” he says of his early days in Pontedera, Tuscany. “Families were restarting their lives and along with change came food.” Ubiquitous and always at the center of great stories, it was food that lit the path towards Menghi’s fascination with cuisine and culture and later inspired high-reaching dreams. At sixteen, he enrolled into a culinary hotel school where he was trained in all divisions of the culinary world. Unaware of how successful he would become, Menghi found himself at the top of his class and with endless job offers. A whirlwind of opportunity presented itself, just as he had always dreamt. Menghi proceeded to cook his way around Europe, the Mediterranean, and Africa before relocating to London as a chef at the Hilton Hotel. Revisiting past accomplishments, Menghi grips a pen from his desk and sketches a small map on a monogrammed notepad. Outlining the places that he has traveled and worked, he connects the dots and shares a proud moment. “In 1967 I was sent to the Expo in Montréal,” he says of his journey across the Atlantic to Canada. Over the next two years, Menghi continued to work long and hard, later realizing that he wanted to experience what the great

West had to offer. In 1969, he moved to the West Coast and settled in Vancouver – where his successes became unparalleled. While on the topic of success, Menghi browses through the pages of his latest best-selling cookbook, Toscana Mia, taking a moment to reminisce on his dream of 1973. “I wanted to open my own restaurant,” Menghi says – and that he did. “I opened a little yellow house and named it Umberto’s and I never looked back.” The first to offer authentic Italian cuisine based on fresh, local ingredients in Vancouver, Umberto’s became an overnight legend. Menghi created more than just food – he created atmosphere. “I provided a home for them and they provided a home for me,” he says of his staff and customers. “It was a feeling of going somewhere and not having to impress anybody.” Menghi continues to talk about life and how much it has changed since his coming to Vancouver. “The city grew up with me and I grew up with the city,” he says. “And that is something I am very proud to say.” Menghi explains how he built his empire around trust. “I’m a giver. I give first and I receive last,” he says. “When people couldn’t afford to pay, I would say give me what you can.” Though a different society at the time, word caught wind throughout Vancouver, making Menghi a household name. “I had nothing to lose,” he says – and all to gain. Twenty-three restaurants worldwide, five best-selling cookbooks and his own cooking show have made Umberto Menghi nothing short of a culinary icon. His love for food is as great as the love that he has for his city. “It’s important to recognize the strong quality of chefs in Vancouver that are cooking with their heart,” says Menghi. “It’s a likeable city.” As Vancouver revolves in conversation, details of the relaunch for Il Giardino’s – one of Menghi’s many renowned restaurants in the city – resurface. He points next door where the renovations are taking place and reveals finalizations. “That is where my new restaurant is going to be,” he says. Vancouverites – expect to be making reservations early next year as Il Giardino’s once again opens its doors.

endi has long held its world status as the stuff fashionista dreams are made of. Recently, the coveted Italian designer is set its vision at sea with a first of its kind megayacht that showcases Fendi’s distinctive aesthetic from bow to stern. In its first-ever foray into the realm of seafaring, Fendi Casa, the brand’s homefurnishing division, teamed up with Italian yacht maker Benetti and design firm Studio Massari to deliver Lady Lara – a 194-foot custom megayacht, whose style-minded

owner has commissioned the entire interior to be done up in elaborate Fendi fashion. Fendi’s signature style makes its mark on each detail of the vessel’s opulent interiors, down to lamps in the shape of the brand’s double-F logo and door handles evoking fasteners on the designer’s iconic Spy bags. The theme is one of simple geometric lines set off by luxe materials and eloquent styling. A rich interplay of textures and tones prevails in the juxtaposition of leathers – gold iguana, gold crocodile, and Galuchat skins in the

main salon, satin-finished woods, and plush carpets. Soothing creams and soft whites envelop the living areas, accented by warm gold finishes, while modern detail such as the cut glass and crystal chandelier adds a lighter touch. Six exquisitely appointed cabins, including two VIP suites, comfortably host up to 12 people aboard. The elegant owner’s study leads into the expansive and serene master’s cabin; from there, a staircase rises up to the ‘relaxation room’ where an intimate

arrangement of curving settees invites hours of lounging along the 270-degree, wrap-around windows that open up views of the sea. The upper deck centers around the sky lounge, a gathering spot for entertainment

that takes on a more futuristic direction with a sleek silver-hued thematic. A bar, two televisions, and playing table are coated in Fendi crocodile leather, alongside lowslung, angular seating to facilitate long evenings of games and conversation.

63

The yacht’s outdoor spaces, styled by long-standing Benetti designer Stefano Natucci, are no less decadent than the indoors. Several lounge areas offer plenty of opportunity for sun-worshipping and sunset-gazing. A Jacuzzi and gymnasium are situated towards the bow, and a vast sun bed, featuring

sumptuous Fendi Casa fur linens, graces the sundeck at aft. With performance to match the looks, the Lady Lara is encased in a steel hull and aluminum superstructure that can cruise at an invigorating 15 knots, courtesy of dual 12-cylinder MTU engines.

VANCOUVER’S

FAVORITE INSURANCE POWER HOUSE

DEVINA ZALESKY Text by Alexander Villegas | Photography Jonathan Cruz

Devina Zalesky started her life in Fiji with very little and came to Canada with even less. The daughter of a rice farmer, Devina was determined and worked every day of her life until she became the President of AllWest Insurance Services Ltd.Then she worked even harder to make it the largest ICBC Autoplan Agency in British Columbia.

64

T

he eldest of three children, Devina immigrated to Canada with her family in 1972 after their farm in Fiji was destroyed by a cyclone. Shortly after arriving to Vancouver, her family life was altered and the future insurance mogul became acquainted with long workdays at an early age. In grade eight, she started working two jobs in addition to school. At 6 a.m., she would open up a restaurant and work until she had to go to class. Then, during her lunch breaks, would rush home to prepare dinner for her mother and two brothers. After school she would then go and work at a cleaning company with her mother. “A strong work ethic was always in me,” Devina states. “I also wanted to make money. I wanted to drive nice cars. If I saw a purse that I liked, I wanted to buy it.”

65

66

In an attempt to achieve that lifestyle, she completed flight attendant courses for Pacific Western Airlines throughout high school and got the job by the time she graduated. Though she never took one trip as a Flight Attendant. “When I went to get my uniform, they told me that they were sorry but wouldn’t hire me, as I was only 18 and you had to be 21 at that time to serve liquor.” As a

result, Devina landed in the insurance industry. Her high school business teacher, Mr. John Adams, had offered her an opportunity at his father’s insurance agency, but she had turned it down because she assumed she was better suited to be a flight attendant. Insurance was an older man’s game, she thought,

one with a briefcase and a suit. It actually turned out to be very much Devina Zalesky’s game. She joined the insurance industry in 1981 and has never looked back, now owning the top two ICBC Autoplan insurance agencies of the 926 in British Columbia. It was evident from the start that she had a bright future in insurance. Her first account was Mercedes-Benz of Canada. “I’ll never forget, it was New Year’s Eve, and the salesman needed me to attend and issue licence plates and insurance. The client owned a restaurant and was having a party. We had to wait until after midnight to finally have his complete attention, and get the transaction done! It was all about service then, and it still is our focus today!” Meredes-Benz continues to be a major client to this day. Soon, the rising star felt she had progressed as far as possible with Adams Insurance. The company was family owned and she had higher aspirations. She thanked her former teacher for the opportunity and told him that she had to move on. It was an amicable departure. In 1983, Devina then joined AllWest Insurance --named Brian Coyle Insurance Agencies at the time. Always the multi-tasker and overachiever, she managed to find love on her way to the top. “We met in the summer of 1985,” said Paul Zalesky, Devina’s husband and CEO of AllWest Insurance. “I was standing outside my office and Devina was walking flawlessly toward me. I thought she had been to a Swiss finishing school because of her look, her appearance, and how she carried herself, everything, but especially the way she walked.” He even remembers the moment their relationship made the leap from professional to personal. It was March 8, 1986, at 8 p.m. and Paul had just come back from a vacation in the Far East. He asked Devina if she wanted to see photos of his trip and she agreed. “She opened her door and I was smitten,” Paul said. “I was in love with her. I kissed her and we’ve never been apart since.” The two soon got married on Dec. 31, 1987 in Maui, Hawaii. It wasn’t all sunshine

for the newlyweds as a hurricane hit and devastated the island later that day. It was the first of a series of terrifying interludes the couple would face together. In 2007, when the Zaleskys were vacationing in Italy with their two children. Devina fell out of a window and was critically injured. “I sat on the window sill and slipped and fell. Falling six metres and landing on a potted palm tree.” She was rushed to the local hospital, where medical assistance was minimal. Paul called their travel insurance company and, with the help of a dedicated and relentless Swiss doctor, was able to have Devina airlifted to Zurich University Hospital in Switzerland. There, Devina faced over eight hours of surgery while her two sons were being hastily shuttled from Italy to Switzerland by a family friend, as there wasn’t space in the special medically equipped jet. It was a terrible experience but the family avoided the worst case scenario on all fronts with Devina making a full recovery. While this accident was a close call, it wasn’t her last. In 2008 Devina was diagnosed with breast cancer. While she underwent multiple surgeries and had more than 60 sessions of radiation, few people knew about her condition at the time. As always, she maintained her polished look and never missed a day at the office. “I went for my radiation every single day, dressed in my suit,” she said. “I was exhausted at the end of the day but I never missed a day of work.” The radiation worked and soon found herself in remission with few people even knowing what her situation had been. She had experience moving from the

office to the hospital and back again. A mother of two, she barely let her pregnancies interfere with her work. “I was in our boardroom when I went into labour with my first son. It was 24 hours of labour, with ultimately an emergency Caesarian Delivery. A few days in recovery, and back to work with baby Stefan in tow. “There are photos of me with my first son in the hospital. I am laying in bed with my briefcase on a table with my insurance paperwork piled high.” The second time around, Zalesky had everything scheduled out. “My second son, Mikhail, was born on October 27th, in much the same manner. I was back in the office in days with his crib next to my desk.” Can anything faze Devina Zalesky? Despite a long list of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, her biggest challenge seems to be pinpointing what it really is. “Challenge?” She hesitated in thought while tapping her nails on the table for a minute trying to answer the question. Every day presents it’s challenges but nothing is too great to be overcome. It is the essence of my life!”

In spite of decadent appearances and exotic finishes, the Giorgio Collection approach to their craft is deeply rooted in their connection to the land – and to family. Centuries-old traditions of Italian artisans are upheld by passing the knowledge and craft of furniture making from father to son, across generations. The spotlight is on celebrating the beauty

of natural materials, shown off to perfection but never obscured: craftsmen finishes, the delicate veining of wood grain, luxury blends of burl and steel, the strength of ceramics and pure platinum. Handmade is more than a label here – it is a philosophy; the belief that the true touch and feel of a human hand can never be replaced by impersonal machinery.

And the result of all that finely honed, lovingly tended craftsmanship is a collection of truly elegant forms and refined lines, flowing fabrics and luxe textures. Several uniquely different product lines deliver something for every taste. The Giorgio Absolute collection speaks to a modern sensibility, clean lines played up with contemporary dark tones. The sinuous

depth of Japanese moka tamo burl set off by sleek smoked glass and a high gloss finish, with many layers of polyester lacquer polish between each coat, in signature offerings like the massive pedestal base dining table and Venetian glass bar unit

equipped with an LED lighting system. An interplay of textures distinguishes the Lifetime collection, contrasting the softness of velvets, nubuck, and armadillo printed leather, with the solid brilliance of dark emperador Portuguese marble and

beveled Murano glass. Intricate tufted detail, bronzed brass hardware, and solid square shapes define pieces such as the armadillo leather and marble buffet and buttoned back chair. The Luna collection presents a contemporary evolution of bold Art Deco styles, with curved shapes and distinctive geometric elements accentuated with precious veneer. The exotic beauty of rare

Makassar ebony from Indonesia and English caramel curly sycamore is deepened by polished chrome and stainless steel inserts, like in the rectangular ebony dining table on a curved chrome base or sharp-lined sectional available in crocodile leather. A true mark of fine Italian artisanship, the

Giorgio Collection is available through Giorgio showrooms around the globe. In Canada, Giorgio is exclusive to Lloyd Bruce Home Collections in Coal Harbour, Vancouver. The serenity of the days’ beginning inspired the creation of the “SUNRISE” collection. The blending of Noble materials such as bird’seye maple veneer, printed iguana leather and stainless steel handles, are combined to enhance

the purity of line & create harmony for a refined and optimistic lifestyle. Lights, carpets & fabric finishes were chosen with the thought of elegance and peaceful living in mind. The collection is completed with the addition of precious Venetian “Murano” blown glass vases, lamps & unique silk hand knotted carpets.

ucked away unpresumptuously along a quiet sidewalk, steps away from downtown Vancouver’s bustling Robson Street, the Wedgewood Hotel and Spa may first appear as just another of the city’s plentiful accommodations. But, a second glance reveals the splendour beyond an understated facade. A beloved local institution, the Wedgewood glows with a subtle yet undeniably exquisite elegance beneath its nostalgic blue

awning. Greeted by a coat-tailed doorman, guests step into a lap of true old-world luxury where no detail is too trivial. The boutique hotel’s distinctively European feel and traditional hospitality, emanating from the fine furnishings, unique accents, and original art collections, are not incidental. The Wedgewood’s Greek-born founder Eleni Skalbania brought her impeccable taste and creativity to Vancouver’s hotel industry starting in the 1970s when she became manager of Devonshire

Hotel, followed by the much larger Hotel Georgia. Both hotels flourished under her capable guidance, and Eleni moved on to pursue her lifelong dream. In 1984, she purchased the Mayfair Apartment Hotel, re-designing it entirely based on her own aesthetic intuition and sense of colour and texture. Every detail was meticulously crafted, including custom-built furnishings, a collection of fine art and antique pieces from Eleni’s own home to complement the desired ambience. Six months later, the Wedgewood Hotel and Spa opened its doors – to a wildly and instantly successful reception.

82

Having hosted dignitaries and celebrity figures, the Wedgewood remains recognized as one of the most popular hotels in Vancouver, earning national acclaim with the Independent Hotelier of the Year Award. In 2013, Eleni’s two daughters took on the hotel’s ownership following her passing after a battle with lung cancer. Elpie Marinakis Jackson, Eleni’s younger daughter, is the Managing Director, having worked by her mother’s side in the business since 1994. Carrying on Eleni’s legacy, Elpie has infused her own experience and unique vision into the Wedgewood’s operations, ensuring the hotel’s continuing commitment to service and quality.

Today, the Wedgewood’s 83 gorgeously appointed guestrooms and suites envelop guests in decadent textures and rich materials, sumptuous upholstery and glossy woods, Roman marble and limestone bathrooms, cozy fireplaces, and outdoor terraces looking over incredible city views. These are just a few of the amenities one will find. Two fullyequipped meeting rooms, a state-of-theart fitness facility, and indulgent spa (try the Epicurean Discovery facial following an invigorating ewucalyptus steam) complete the ultimate stay experience. Of special mention is Bacchus, Wedgewood’s award-winning restaurant that is routinely named among Vancouver’s top romantic spots. In the intimate dining room, among plush velvet and Murano crystal, diners enjoy nightly live piano and modern French cuisine with a Canadian twist such as Quebec Foie Gras and poached Nova Scotia lobster.

Elpie Marinakis Jackson - Co-Owner & Managing Director of Wedgewood

In 2008, the Wedgewood Hotel and Spa was selected to join the exclusive Relais & Chateaux association of fine boutique hotels and restaurants worldwide. The association’s core values of the ‘5 C’s’ – Courtesy, Charm, Character, Calm and Cuisine – perfectly mirror Wedgewood’s own high-reaching standards. What does that mean for you and me? Oldfashioned decadence with all the charm of a European home – complete with homemade cookies in the welcome package.

BRINGING ITALY’S BEST TO

HOLT RENFREW Text by Elizabeth Zaremba

O

ctober 15th through to the 17th, Fendi Fashion Furs combined with the neverending genius of the Weston family dazzled Vancouver's elite with a trunk show which absolutely changed the way fur is seen here in Canada's most organic city. In Holt Renfrew’s usual style they welcomed Fendi fur fashions to Vancouver in such a way that I'm certain will change the way Vancouverites, look, think and feel about fur. 15 years ago the fur industry made huge international changes in the way that furs are produced in response to the spotlight placed on the industry. With more transparency and stricter regulation, the mistakes of the past have been eliminated.

Karl Lagerfeld, creative director and head director for both Fendi and Chanel, recently presented fur collections for both houses one after another. After his presentation of Fendi fashion furs, his collection designed for Chanel followed with exceptional style as one would expect. Surprisingly, the entire Chanel collection was done in faux fur. When questioned as to why Chanel followed Fendi with faux fur, Mr. Lagerfeld, in his signature way, said "of course Fendi had to lead the show, they have the best furs in the world. How could I do that to Chanel." The talent and craftsmanship of the garments was punctuated by the beautiful surroundings of the private shopping suites of Holt Renfrew; completely furnished and designed with Fendi Casa's unlimited endorsement and style. Mauritzio Graziani exhibited yet unseen brilliance in his collaboration with Fendi furs, Holt Renfrew, and Fendi Casa Vancouver. His colleague Travis Christian, merchandiser for ready to wear and fur of Fendi New York, stole the show with his charm and wit as Vancouver's elite continued its introduction to luxury living. By the end of the show, every mannequin draped in couture furs must have been naked. The combination of style and the intrinsic value of the offerings demanded that the serious fashion elite added to their collections. Once again, Holt Renfrew led the way in helping Vancouver to the leading edge of fashion and design. The collaboration of Fendi with the brilliance of Vancouver's Lloyd Bruce Home President and internationally renowned designer Robert Bruce McKay had attendees surrounding in luxury right from the admission queue. Fendi Casa’s new collections exuded outstanding style, simplicity, and obvious quality. Little wonder that each guest could not help but be overwhelmed by the entire experience. On hand were Lloyd Bruce Magazine's starlight photographers, who captured all the fun and fervor. Douglas Lloyd Somerville, founder and chairman, was particularly impressed with the combined talents of Sam dHand of LUXE Media and his team with their passion for quality editorial and their commitment to excellence. A surprise visit from Michael Young, vice president of business development with Lloyd Bruce Magazine, filled the space with energy and excitement. Without a doubt, more than just a few privileged attendees will be unwrapping fur for Christmas this year.

HEALTH IS WEALTH

DR. LEDERMAN SHARES HIS WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE ON TRUE HEALTHY LIVING Text by Alexander Villegas Photography by Sam dHand

E

ven a Ford Fiesta will beat a Ferrari Berlinetta on the track if the Berlinetta doesn’t have any gas.

Routine maintenance, preventive care and knowing how to drive it correctly are essential pillars of owning a luxury car, as much as affording it is. Dr. Michael Lederman, a naturopathic doctor and founder of the South Granville Naturopathic Clinic, says our body functions in much the same way, through proper support of it’s essential pillars of health. There’s no true wealth without health.

90

“Years ago, I realized that so many of my patients had achieved wealth in their lives, through the success of their businesses, but had lost their health in the process,” says Dr. Lederman. “it was a real awakening for me to realize that those people were, in essence, suffering and wishing they could restore their health. “They didn’t have answers, and were staring at their own mortality or compromised quality of life. They had the means to buy physical assets, but were unable to enjoy them due to their compromised health.” Many of these individuals, Dr. Lederman says, were prescribed medications to manage symptoms without taking aim at resolving the underlying cause of their conditions. It was the reactive response of conventional medicine, rather than a proactive one. “Seeing all these people stuck without solutions made me realize that I had get back to the basics of healing in order to help them restore their body’s proper functionality. Our body is able to heal itself when we remove obstacles that have been put in its way.” “To have energy, be pain free, and be happy is what everyone wants and needs.” But, as we age, we stand to lose one or more of these basic needs, unless we take charge of our health through the everyday choices we make. To achieve this, Dr. Lederman’s practice has embraced the medical paradigm of Functional Medicine. Since 1999, Dr. Lederman has helped thousands of people restore their health and vitality. He creates a personalized health program for each patient supporting the natural physiological design of their

body, taking aim at the imbalances causing cellular dysfunction. To do so, he focuses on the Four Pillars of Health: 1) Nutritional Input 2) Toxin Output 3) Emotions & 4) Physical Structure. The first pillar of health Dr. Lederman tackles is Nutritional Input. “Food is medicine. A lot of people ask me why they feel so tired, and I’ll tell them that they’re like a car that’s run out of gas on the side of the highway. They’re pushing the car, and it’s moving, but it’s moving very slowly, and with much effort. It’s not the way they remember it being, or the way they wish it was.” “Aspartame, additives, artificial colours, trans fats, high-fructose corn syrup, and other manufactured ingredients with low nutritional value are not what the body needs,” Dr. Lederman says. “These chemicals are major factors in functional disorders including fatigue, headaches, bloating, gas, constipation, and mood changes.” “A healthy, balanced, nutrient-dense diet is fundamental to fuelling the body properly… most patients ask to fast-track the process using vitamin injection therapy, “ says Dr. Lederman. “This is the fastest way to replenish the fuel supply needed by cells, enabling one to thrive again.” Another important input many patients overlook is the one that makes life possible… water. “Cells are bathed in water, but most people are depleted in this essential ingredient that makes up 75 percent of the body, unaware that they’re living in a dehydrated state,” Dr. Lederman says. “When I ask people how much water they drink, the typical response is “very little, but I do have four coffees, two pops, or a glass of milk…” and they wonder why they have gained 20 pounds, have fatigue and pain, and why they just don’t feel good anymore.”

91

and very impactful. Dr. Lederman always encourages people to have a positive attitude. to deal with the toxic burden. Too much toxin input and not enough toxin output,” says Dr. Lederman. Most people have liver or lymphatic congestion and irregular bowel function, and they feel tired as a result. The key is to limit toxin exposure while focussing on effective toxin processing and elimination. Detoxification programs are fundamental for people who wish to improve their health, and Dr. Lederman’s clinic offers several types of these programs.

92

The second pillar of health that must be addressed is the Toxin Output. The removal of the toxic burden from the body is paramount to restoring health and vitality. Most people accumulate more waste than their body can process and eliminate, causing the toxic symptoms suffered by patients. “You wouldn’t swim in a murky pool filled with chemical waste... if you pollute your body by ingesting the same, how can you expect your body to function? Those symptoms are the result of the body reaching its capacity

The third pillar of health is Emotions. “Typically, people who come to my clinic live a very busy life. Some are effective at managing their stress, while others are overwhelmed by it. Their life isn’t balanced, and often feel down or anxious,” says Dr. Lederman. Optimizing brain biochemistry requires addressing the first two pillars of health, nutritional input and the toxin output, resulting in significant change in their mood. As well, Dr. Lederman says he can help people learn techniques to reprogram the way they process life events, in order to change their emotional reality and get rapid relief. These are fast acting

“Some people are quite positive, and see their cup as half full or more. Others only see what they don’t have. Focusing more on their their problems, they do not appreciate the blessings they do have. For them, the glass is always half empty or less.” “There will of course be moments in which you don’t feel as wonderful as you would like,” says Dr. Lederman. “That’s normal and natural, but you can still push yourself to have a positive attitude. It’s like any habit. It takes practice to take hold.” The key for people is to recognize that there is much they can do to change how they feel emotionally. The treatments offered by Dr. Lederman afford people the opportunity to feel better and live a happier life. And that leads to the fourth pillar of health in Functional Medicine... the Physical Structure. People suffering from pain and injury need to heal damaged bones, tendons and ligaments. Since the 1950s, a treatment called Prolotherapy has been used to heal these connective tissues and resolve pain. It is a highly effective injection therapy using Dextrose. The most common areas Dr. Lederman is asked to treat are the knees, shoulders and lower back. “All of this is rather irrelevant if the individual is not a willing participant,” Dr. Lederman says. “I’m a facilitator. The first question I ask my patients is what their goals are, because

it’s about them. It’s not about what their spouse or family members want. It’s about what they themselves want.” Once Dr. Lederman understands his patient’s goals, he determines their level of commitment. It’s not enough to acknowledge bad habits and problems; patients must have a willingness to make changes. Dr. Lederman tries to make the process enjoyable, rather than making changes seem like a burden. “My message is not just about empowering patients, but about making it happen in a manner that they can have fun with, and sustain as a lifestyle,” Dr. Lederman says. “We get most patients off to a great start, and they are amazed by the changes they experience within weeks.” People naturally want to be healthy. Many of them are just misguided, or unaware of what they must do to take charge of their health. “Someone has to show them what needs to be done, where they need to set boundaries for their choices in order to meet their goals. This is the adventure that determines their health... this is the opportunity,” Dr. Lederman says. “If you educate people about their health, keep it simple, tell them to have fun and enjoy the process, you empower them… and that’s the ultimate goal. From then on, they know that they are in control, and that their choices will determine how good they feel. As Dr. Lederman likes to say to his patients: “Take control of your health... live your life!”

As in the case of the automobile, Bentley fuses a tradition of quality with functional performance, the collection incorporates classic style elements with edgy architectural detail for a look that’s entirely one of a kind. A pastel palette emphasizes neutral shades such as mocha, cognac, and taupe with bolder accents of brick, burgundy, or blue and hints of menswear-

inspired pattern in pinstripe or hounds-tooth. The multi-dimensional textures are an interplay of tactile senses – creamy leathers, rich velvets, and feather-light cashmeres, shown off to perfection in fine upholstery as well as intricately hand-knotted carpets in wools or silks and luscious mink-trimmed throws.

Some signature pieces include the geometric Butterfly sofa and chair, quilted in Bentley’s iconic diamond patterns; the ice grey and champagne leather Kensington Royce armchair; and the Madeley table, set on a trapezoid leather-covered bent-wood base.

The line also showcases the premium Richmond collection, exploring a ‘double shell’ theme executed in burled walnut briar root (used in Bentley automobile interiors) and quilted leather upholstery, highlighted with finishes of steel gun-metal, Ebony Macassar essence and Calacatta marble.

ore power. More torque. More performance. It’s just ‘more’ all around for the 2015 Bentley Continental GT Speed, a feat of engineering ingenuity that earns the title of the fastest Bentley ever produced. The 2015 model, premiered at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, showcases a number of impressive mechanical updates that elevate the already-remarkable machine to a whole new performance level. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 engine, the 2015 GT Speed jumps to a hefty

The 2015 GT Speed exterior also sees visual enhancements in keeping with the internal ramped-up dynamics. Designed exclusively for the 2015 GT Speed, a sultry new paint shade dubbed Candy Red is available for the exterior finish. An all-new color palette exclusive to Speed models has been carried through the 2015 Speed’s interior as well, with a darkhued monotone cabin accented by contrasting color stripes running along the doors, rear panels, console, and gear lever, and contrasting stitching detail. Along with the GT Speed, Bentley is debuting the rest of its 2015 Continental lineup in Geneva, including the 2015 Flying Spur V8. COCO CHANEL’S REVERED DESIGN & STYLE SENSE

IS REFLECTED THROUGH THE BRANDS GORGEOUS WATCH COLLECTION Text by Kate Missine

E

ver since Coco transformed couture with her effortlessly impeccable styles over a century ago, the house of Chanel has remained synonymous with exclusive, timeless elegance. Its interlocking C’s garner worship of fashion mavens worldwide. In keeping with its haute status, Chanel’s exquisite timepieces have earned a cult following all their own. For 2014 Le Temps Chanel continues its legacy, unveiling its evolving vision at Baselworld 2014 with stunning new takes on three signature collections. Debuted in 1987, Chanel’s iconic Premiere was, true to its name, a first in the world of women’s watches – the first to be created by a luxury house, with a unique design not derived from masculine pieces. The style is inspired by the Chanel No. 5 perfume bottle stopper, with the chain bracelet conjuring the legendary Chanel handbags. For 2014, the Premiere steps out with the unabashedly feminine Camelia Flying Tourbillon, encased in diamond- and pink sapphire-studded white gold. In contrast, the Double Tour Premiere shows an understated black lacquered dial topped with an onyx cabochon crown, on a black leather and steel interwoven strap. As with every Premiere you won’t find a seconds hand or numbers as “le temps Chanel’ is fluid time, liberated from the constraints of exactness. The Mademoiselle Prive collection (named after the inscription on the door of the original Chanel studio) gets a bejewelled, exquisitely crafted update. An intimate glimpse into the world of Gabrielle Chanel, Mademoiselle Prive is a nod to the designer’s personal loves: lacquered Coromandel screens, the camellia flower, and comet diamonds. Five new pieces spotlight impeccable marquetry. The camellia motif shines in Urushi lacquer and a quail eggshell dial in the new Camelia Maki-E, and in “Grand Feu” enamel set with a dazzling 552 diamonds in the Bouton de Camelia, limited to 18 coveted editions. The Coromandel watches come

in sets of two, one showcasing the miniature screens produced in “Geneva technique” enamel, and the second a matching hand-sculpted Mother-ofPearl dial, with black satin or alligator straps rounding off the decadently femme appeal. Chanel’s most contemporary time icon, the J12, was presented in varied color options and a new 36.5 mm size with automatic movement. The first to put ceramics on the map for luxury watches and Chanel’s first unisex timepiece, the J12’s sleek, androgynous feel is what

119

the brand’s vision is all about. This year, the J12-365 makes its appearance in a new 18k beige gold, Chanel’s trademark shade, as well as black or white ceramic, steel, and 18K gold with and without diamonds. Six limited-edition models show off a brand-new Flying Tourbillon hidden beneath a diamond-set Comet, including a high-jewelled version of only five watches, beset with over 700 diamonds. Ultra-feminine or androgynous, subtle or opulent, Chanel’s 2014 Baselwood unveiling offers a timepiece for every personality and style, as distinctive as their wearer.

DR. ROBERT MORRELL A NON-INVASIVE APPROACH TO ENHANCING YOUR NATURAL BEAUTY Text by Alexander Villegas

T

he science of looking young is not that old. It’s also getting more efficient, less invasive and more available every day. Dr. Robert Morrell, founder of the Medical Rejuvenation Centre in Vancouver, is a leader in non-invasive aesthetic medicine.

120

There’s no surgery involved, all the anti-aging procedures are done via energy devices, lasers or medical-grade cosmeceuticals. If all that sounds new to you, it’s because it is. “Non-surgicall treatments of aging processes have only been around for about 20 years,” Dr. Morrell says. “And we caught on to the wave when it first came on.” Dr. Morrell has been in the industry for 16 of those years and for over 20 years before that he was a medical doctor. While Dr. Morrell focused on sports as a medical doctor —he still represents Canada in the Olympic sports medicine committee for alpine sports and ski safety-- he always had a penchant for arts. Previously, Dr. Morrell’s artistic outlet were carvings, he even keeps a few around his office. Then he found a way to mix his passion with his medical degree. “There were two bits of inspiration that drew me into aesthetic medicine,” Dr. Morrell said. “The aesthetic part and the creativity is in making significant changes in people’s faces, and through that, their lives. “I always had an artistic bend to me and that fits in really well with fillers and Botox because it’s very artistic. The laser part is the same way. You can make changes to people’s lives by making their skin smoother, removing acne, making pores smaller or removing acne scars.” Lasers are how Dr. Morrell started in the aesthetic medicine industry. A friend introduced Dr. Morrell to hair removal lasers and then Dr. Morrell went on his own and founded the Medical Rejuvenation Centre. When

the clinic first opened, Dr. Morrell only had one technician. That technician also served as the receptionist and anything that the office needed. Now Dr. Morrell has about 14 employees dedicated to aesthetic medicine and lasers, something Dr. Morrell is still on the forefront of. “I go every year to Harvard to take an updating course,” says Dr. Morrell. “I see what are the latest lasers coming out, what are the best ones to use and what the best procedures are.” Dr. Morrell’s laser knowledge even brought him to develop and teach the first aesthetic medicine course in Canada. His alumni aren’t the average college student either, about half of Dr. Morrell’s students were doctors looking to expand their knowledge in aesthetic medicine. Dr. Morrell’s knowledge and passion for aesthetic medicine helped grow the two-person centre into the multi-department business it is today. The Medical Rejuvenation Centre now has its own line of skincare, a graphics department, a marketing department and an operations department in addition to the laser and skincare departments. Dr. Morrell’s company has even been asked to deliver products as far as the Middle East.

At the clinic, Dr. Morrell sees patients of all ages and ethnicities. While people age differently, Dr. Morrell says, the major components are genetics, culture and toxic exposure --such as drinkin, smoking and nutrition. Above all though, the major contributor to aging is sunlight. Dr. Morrell says that about 85 percent of the aging issues show through our faces and ultraviolet light is the biggest cause of it. That’s when Dr. Morrell and his team come in, armed with the most modern computers, lasers and medical-grade cosmeceuticals on the market. While Dr. Morrell enjoys seeing how his company has grown, the most rewarding part of his business is seeing the difference he makes in his patients lives. “I get rewarded every day,” Dr. Morrell said. “Whether its Botox, fillers, or kids getting their acne brought under control, I get people feeling significantly happy on a daily basis. Sometimes it’s something that you and I might not notice, but they see every time they look in the mirror.” That’s what keeps Morrell coming back to the office. That and the occasional gift. “I get a lot of bottles of wine,” Dr. Morrell laughed.

BARB HILLMAN THE UNASSUMING WILDLIFE & ADVENTURIST HEAD AT ONE OF VANCOVER FINEST YACHTS DEALERS

WESTERLY YACHT Text by Amber-Lea Nielsen | Photography by Jamie-Lee Fuoco

A

modern nod to Vancouver living, Barbara Hillman - General Manager of Westerly Yacht, graces Coal Harbour with elegance and class. Though it’s Monday and the morning is somewhat young, Hillman has a healthy dose of energy and takes some time to chat along the seawall before whisking away on holiday.

She opens up about life in Ontario and what it was like growing up along the Rideau Waterway. “As a child I grew up at a cottage with boats,” she recalls, pausing for a moment to gather memories.

She later chimes in; “I think so many different things shape your life.” Hillman dips an Earl Grey tea bag into her mug and explains a life mantra. “Sometimes it’s not what you think life is going to throw at you, it’s what life does.” It’s clear Hillman is speaking from experience. When she and husband of 17 years, Ron Hillman, came to visit the West Coast, she explains how they fell in love with the ocean. “It’s actually a funny story,” she says. She quickly glances across the water at Cardero’s – Coal Harbour’s renowned

Barb Hillman marine pub - and continues on about how life came to be on the Coast. “When we got out here, we took a look at the waterways and thought you’ve got to be kidding – we need to be out there!” When Ron & Barbara did begin to spend more time in Vancouver, they bought their first boat from Westerly – the Swift Trawler 42 - and later an opportunity arose to buy Westerly Yacht itself. And so they did. A breeze sweeps the ocean and follows alongside our conversation. “Ron likes to tell the story that we came to buy a boat but we bought the company,” she says smiling.

123

We loop back along the seawall, and Hillman sits outside her Westerly office and breathes in what the day offers – A salty breeze and the scent of roasted coffee beans from down the street. She fires a question my way – “You know what a great thing about being on a boat is?” she asks. “It really seems to extend time.” Perhaps that’s why Hillman feels at home when she is at sea. She takes a moment and reminisces about her expedition aboard ‘The Mother Ship Adventure Cruise,’ her presence calm as she tells the story; “ We

flew into Bella-Bella and went out on an old, reclaimed missionary ship that was restored. In the mornings we’d pop our kayaks into the water and go off with the onboard naturalist for the entire day,” Hillman explains. “We were up by grizzly bears, eagles and little cubs, and we had an opportunity to see the Spirit Bear.” She takes a second to sip her tea, adding, “It was utterly beautiful.” We sit and chat some more about life in Vancouver, touching down on travel and her keenness of the 50’s style. Her love for the city is apparent, however her love for nature and wildlife is too.

LAMBORGHINI

VENENO ROADSTER A COLLECTOR’S MASTERPIECE OF ENGINEERING AND DESIGN Text by Kate Missine

128

F

orm pursues a clear function – exceptional dynamics, optimum downforce with minimal drag and perfect cooling of the high-performance engine. Therefore the Veneno Roadster is unmistakably a Lamborghini; it sticks firmly to the consistent design philosophy of all the super sports cars from Sant’Agata Bolognese. That includes the extreme proportions, as well as the powerful arrow-shaped front end and the interplay between razor-sharp lines and precise surfaces.

The entire design of the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster has been laid out for perfect airflow and downforce. The front end works as a large aerodynamic wing, the visual division of the rear fenders from the car body is a reference to the world of racing cars and optimizes the aerodynamic flow of this road monster. The design of the adjustable rear wing and exclusive alloy wheels is also determined by aerodynamic functionality – a carbon-fiber ring around the wheel

129

rim works like a turbine to deliver additional cooling air to the carbon-ceramic brake discs. The intense paint colour “Rosso Veneno” was developed exclusively for the Veneno Roadster. The Veneno Roadster is further proof of Automobili Lamborghini’s unique competence in carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)based lightweight design. All exterior parts and nearly all of it’s parts including the interiors are made from the lightweight CFRP.

The Veneno Roadster meets all safety and registration requirements worldwide, and naturally also incorporates a full complement of safety systems from airbags through to the adapted ESP handling system. The carbon fiber structural skin is visible inside the car around the central tunnel and the sills. The two lightweight bucket seats are made from Lamborghini’s patented Forged Composite. The woven carbon-fiber CarbonSkin is used to clad the entire cockpit, part of the seats and

the headliner. Like a hi-tech fabric, this extremely fine-looking carbonfiber matting fits perfectly to any form and reduces the weight of the vehicle.

130

The systematic, carbon-fiber, lightweight design of the Veneno Roadster is not only visible, it is also evident on the scales: with a dry weight of just 1,490 kilograms (3,278 pounds), the Veneno Roadster benefits from a power-to-weight ratio of just 1.99 kg/hp (4.38 lbs/hp) which guarantees a performance that is nothing short of mind-blowing. Even the stunning acceleration figure of 2.9 seconds cannot adequately describe it. Despite an aerodynamic setup configured for extreme downforce, the Veneno Roadster possesses exceptionally low wind resistance which allows it to reach a top speed of 355 km/h (221 mph). With a price tag of over $4.5 M this car is definitely not made for mere mortals!

Some family secrets are worth talking about Ferry Porsche had a fundamental belief that performance could best be achieved through efficiency. It’s a belief that remains at the core of every car we build, and every technology we develop. More power, with less weight, improved performance and a more dynamic driving experience, with lower emissions and better fuel economy. With new technologies such as Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox, the fuel-saving auto start/stop function and parallel full hybrid -- getting more from less just runs in the family.

LE CROCODILE A STAPLE OF FINE FRENCH CUISINE WITH A WEST COAST FLAIR Text by Alexander Villegas

W

hen you dine at Michel Jacob’s Le Crocodile, you don’t just have French cuisine with West Coast flair, you have a culinary experience that Jacob has dedicated his life to perfect.

132

“There are 20 restaurants that cook as well as we do,” Jacob said. “So why go back to Le Crocodile?” According to Jacob, it’s a multi-faceted answer that includes top-notch service, ambience, decor and --above all-- consistency. “In the restaurant business, you’re only as good as you were the day before,” Jacob said. “When I talk to business men or VIPs they say, ‘The only reason we choose Le Crocodile is because we know you guys will make us look good.’ “The number one thing is always consistency.” The consistent, high-quality cuisine is what’s made Le Crocodile a staple of fine cuisine in Vancouver for the past 30 years. During that time, Le Crocodile has seated the likes of Sean Penn, Pierce Brosnan, Al Pacino, Steven Spielberg and the King and Queen of Norway. But Le Crocodile doesn’t boast of its celebrity clientele with photos on its walls or preferential treatment in the kitchen. “Just because the

other guy is a movie star doesn’t mean he’s going to get different food,” Jacob said. “We are very consistent. “And why would I want a picture with these people?“ They’re here once to shoot a movie and then they’re gone. If you come here every month for the past 20 years, I should take a picture with you.” And Jacob knows who frequents Le Crocodile. For nearly every lunch and dinner rush since its doors opened, Jacob has been at the helm of the kitchen, ensuring that every sauce has just enough lemon and that every plate --not just those for VIPs or regulars-- lives up to the highest standards of French cuisine: his own.

134

“I’m obviously very demanding of my staff, but I’m also very demanding of myself,” Jacob said. “Your staff is only as good as you are, but you’re only as good as your staff.” Jacob’s staff have quite the reputation to live up to. Born in Strasbourg, France, in 1955, Jacob started cooking at the age of 10 and earned an apprenticeship at Johnny Letzer’s Zimmer at the age of 14. It was the last year apprentices were taken in so young. Aspiring chefs in France now have to wait until the age of 18. Jacob’s talents quickly took him to several restaurants across Europe, including the Guinness family’s Ashford Castle in Ireland. Despite succeeding in Europe, Jacob had dreams of heading west. Jacob soon got a work permit to Montreal and found himself working at the Four Seasons in 1977. Jacob spent three years at that restaurant and met another chef who changed his path. “One of the chefs was from Japan and I always wanted to go work in Japan,” Jacob said. “I wanted to work on my ice carving technique and presentation, so I sent my CV and I got a permit to work for one year in a Tokyo hotel.” But before he could head east, Jacob had to go west. “I had to go to the Japanese consulate in Vancouver to get my visa,” Jacob said. “I came from Montreal with my two suitcases and stayed in a motel on Robson street. “I thought I’d leave the next day to Japan.” It would take a bit longer than that since the Japanese consulate told Jacob that they’d need four-to-six months to process his visa. It was the spring of 1980 when Jacob landed in Vancouver and he didn’t get a call back from the Japanese consulate until October. A few things changed for the chef during those months; aside from finding a job, he found love. “During that summer I met my wife to be, Helene,” Jacob said. The one day in Vancouver turned into a lifetime. Jacob saved up to open the original Le Crocodile on Thurlow and Robson and was met with instant success. Le Crocodile quickly outgrew the confines of its original establishment and moved to its current

135

136

location on Burrard street in 1993. During that time, Jacob saw numerous restaurants rise and fall and witnessed Vancouver’s dining scene evolve into what it is today.

Jacob said. “Everything was overcooked and well done. “Montreal and Toronto were ahead of us in terms of restaurants and cuisine, but now, in 2014, I think Vancouver is ahead of them.”

“When I came here, it was a meat and potato town,”

One of the reasons for this, Jacob says, is the Asian

influence in Vancouver. “Asian cuisine is similar to French and Italian cuisine in that we eat everything,” Jacob said. “We eat the tongue, the tail, the eyes, everything. Asians have a very high level of food appreciation so they elevated everything in Vancouver. “When they came and ate at restaurants, if it wasn’t done right they’d send it back because they knew what it was supposed to be like. Their cuisine is very high-end, they know how to cook.” And the scene continues to change. Jacob has had several young chefs apprentice at his restaurant who were born and bred in Vancouver, a novelty to the area. These young, active chefs take inspiration from across the world and apply them to Vancouver-specific ingredients. Like Jacob, many of these young chefs take a shot at opening their own restaurants. Unlike Jacob though, many of these new chef-owned restaurants have been moving away from the downtown area due to increasing rent costs. While this has pushed many new restaurants to the east and the surrounding neighbourhoods, Jacob and Le Crocodile are staying put where they are. “I’ve been asked on a monthly basis to open up another restaurant,” Jacob said. “But one restaurant is always better than the other and I can’t be everywhere at once. Being in the restaurant business, as you know, you give good times. You make people happy.” Jacob and Le Crocodile are one and the same, the experience will never be recreated. Eighty-five percent of people that come in ask, ‘Is Michel here?’” Jacob said. “Le Crocodile is my life, it’s what I do.”

The oval silhouette dons its Sunday best: more than a thousand carefully selected diamonds encrust the white gold case. Called “snow”, this style of setting is mastered by very few artisans, and involves positioning the stones so as to leave nothing else visible apart from the crimping grains, playing with diameters to perfectly fit the curvature of the case. The setter works without a drawing, following his instinct and know-how, hollowing cavities in

MARY-ANN LIU EXPRESS CREATIVITY IN THE FORM

OF ABSTRACT ART

152

M

ary Ann Liu is a multi-discipline artist who has achieved international recognition. She considers her life to be a manifestation of creativity and strives to express this approach in every aspect of her life. Liu’s work spans the disciplines of Sculpture, Film and Graphic Design. As a sculptor, Liu first reached mastery in classical realism focusing on human anatomy. She then proceeded to express herself with abandon in the form of abstract art. Liu is a significant artist in Canadian history as she was honoured with the creation of Canada’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the Parliament buildings in the capitol city of Ottawa. She also created the landmark Dragon Lanterns in Vancouver and Chicago’s historic Chinatowns. Her portraiture in bronze are sought after as her ability to capture the spirit and essence of the individual’s character breaks the boundary between art and life. Mary-Ann Liu’s mastery in realism and knowledge of art history allows her the freedom to employ different styles that are adaptable to varied scenarios. Liu’s goal is always to transcend barriers and get to the core of the statement, whether it’s the representation of a person or the genius loci (spirit of the place) so that everyone regardless of age or culture can easily understand the work. Liu’s extended education in classical art and

153

anatomy guaranteed a secure foundation for her to build upon. Her background in Renaissance techniques combined with state of the art film industry methods already created a hybrid of sculpting methods that maximizes on time and budgets. Now with the advent of computer aided design, she enters a new age where possibilities are endless. Mary Ann Liu joined creative forces with a stone sculptor named Paul Slipper. The formation of a team allows flow and dialogue between artists to create yet even more ideas and avenues of expression. Each artist strengthens and reinforces the other, forming new territories and avenues of exploration in art. Knowledge and skill grows exponentially, much to the benefit of both in the creation of art.

154

Outside the discipline of sculpture, Liu is an award winning Production Designer in the Feature Film Industry. Her understanding of art principles such as composition and colour added with the fourth dimension of time made designing film a special challenge. Liu received a review in Variety Magazine on the feature film “Eve and the Fire Horse” where she was lauded for her “non-glitzy take on period detail”. It is yet another example of her understanding of realism and how to express the essential theme be it in sculpture film or any other medium. She has also contributed significantly to the global television industry as a graphic designer for hit shows such as Warner Brother’s Supernatural -now in its tenth season. It is self evident that this multi talented artist tirelessly strives for excellence in everything she touches. Her endeavours to create new approaches and visions for projects and private commissions are met with public approval and admiration. She believes that art is a reflection of the world she lives in and the divinity of all resides within each persons own creativity.
