T

he collective spirit is alive and well at LOCZIdesign. A “traveling bunch,” as founder and creative director Paige Loczi describes her tribe, the LOCZI team loves exploring different cultures and cities, whether Beirut, Buenos Aires or Black Rock City, looking for great design, music and food that inspires. Be it architect Patricia Urquiola or musician Roger Waters, myriad influences play a role in their eclectic stylings. “We’re known for bold patterns and color,” says Maria Haidamus, principal of the San Francisco office. Loczi adds, “Although often ‘modern’ in look, there’s always a level of eccentricity and delight that typifies our work.” To include clients in the process, the team asks lots of questions—how they want to feel in their space, what they want to be reminded of and to say to those who visit. “Captivated by an architectural marvel, artist or delicious meal, these influences along with other social media images help inform the spirit of the project,” Loczi says. When it comes to ensuring project success, honesty,

integrity and a no-nonsense approach are the cornerstones. “Our job as designers is to cultivate curiosity and establish trust,” Loczi says. “The more the client knows who they are, how they like to work, and how they want to be inspired, the better.”

Can you give me a brief timeline of your company’s success? 2013: California Home+Design Award Winner and “Seed of Life” Exploratorium Opening Gala 2017: Opening Night Reception for San Francisco Design Week and “Let’s Get Crafty” American Craft Council’s 75th Anniversary 2020: HGTV’s Designer of the Year Finalist and LUXE Gold List Honoree What type of project would you love to take on? Loczi: A place of worship or a community center. The extended focus on ‘spirit of place’ would be a new and welcome challenge. What is the next move for your firm? Loczi: We recently welcomed visionary designer Maria Haidamus as the principal of the San Francisco studio, and I’ve relocated to Chicago, where we will be opening another studio.
