COMPLIMENTS TO THE CHEF

Today’s kitchen serves many roles, from entertaining hub to daily gathering place, but its culinary function remains paramount. For designer Martha Dayton’s recent clients, that priority guided every goal. “The husband is an avid cook, so having his cookbooks close at hand was a top priority,” she notes.

Working with Rehkamp Larson Architects, Dayton’s team designed two freestanding anchor walls—one for refrigeration, the other for cooking— that define the space without blocking lake views. Those vistas inspired the material palette as well: custom cabinetry in a serene blue and limestone countertops that echo the shoreline. “The appliances also serve to define the shape and flow of the space,” Dayton adds. Collaboration between architect, builder, tradespeople and client produced a suite tailored to the homeowners’ lifestyle. A Sub-Zero Designer Series refrigerator and freezer column combo, 48-inch Wolf range, convection steam oven and custom copper hood deliver both exceptional function and distinctive style.

A DEFINING SUITE For many design pros, certain manufacturers simply speak their language. For Amy Storm, that brand is Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. After visiting a factory and witnessing U.S.-based production firsthand, she became a devoted fan. Her enthusiasm is clear in a recent project, where the refrigerator, range, hood, double ovens and dishwasher all hail from Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. Design options made an impact, too. “This client came with a well-defined personal design DNA, consistent across clothing, travel, pursuits—and even food management,” Storm explains. That vision shines through the glass-front Sub-Zero refrigerator, reflecting the homeowner’s passion for nutrition and organization. “Looking over to the range, the red knobs were perfect for these purists, complementing the veining in the marble tops and backsplash.” Beyond the main kitchen, Storm placed a Cove dishwasher in both kitchen and pantry, with an extra Wolf oven and microwave tucked into the latter to ease the visual load.

BACKDROP TO LIFE Ah, the heart of the home. Designer Whitney Ray breathes fresh life into the phrase: “A kitchen is a core part of lifestyle, and, as such, it reflects who someone really is—practical or playful, classic or adventurous.” For the new owners of a Linda MacArthur-designed masterpiece, that identity centered on two essentials: showcasing art and accommodating dogs and children. Ray and her Wyeth Ray Interiors team crafted a home that balances exquisite display with livable ease. The kitchen embodies timeless brightness while delivering drama through a 48-inch Wolf range and pewter hood. “Sleek lighting and modern furnishings kept the aesthetic from feeling too traditional, while integrated Sub-Zero columns perfected the look,” Ray notes. Having specified Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove for nearly 15 years, she praises their reliability. A favorite addition? The plumbed Wolf convection steam oven, which she loves because there is “no fussing with water trays like other models.”

W H O L LY I N T E G R AT E D “For us, a space isn’t complete until it feels impossible to replicate.” That belief guides Stacy and Traci Richardson of Paul + Jo Studio, whose work is defined by individuality. Their latest kitchen proves the point: baseboard-to-ceiling walnut paneling, a gleaming gold range hood with coordinating hardware and striking imported Italian Viola marble, which is even inset into the custom Wolf cooktop. Structural limitations prevented expanding the footprint, so the designers shifted focus.

“We emphasized sculptural presence and flow instead of size,” Stacy explains. The result is a kitchen that maximizes space while exuding artistry. For function, the choice was easy. “Our love affair with Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove began with Wolf’s performance,” Traci shares. “Living with these appliances daily showed us they are what our clients deserve.” With Sub-Zero’s preservation, Wolf’s precision and Cove’s whisper-quiet innovation, the wow factor is matched by lasting performance.

RICH WITH PERSONALITY

At the center of timeless design lies one factor: personality. In the kitchen, this often takes the form of choreography—how homeowners live, cook and host. For Amy Aidinis Hirsch and her team, capturing a client’s voice is paramount. Designing her own kitchen, Hirsch showcased her ethos.

“I did not want what everyone else in New England has,” she says. The resulting space features 200-year-old reclaimed beams, a walnut island and a suite of Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove appliances. “At the center, a 42-inch French-door refrigerator sits seamlessly paneled with oversize custom walnut and blackened-steel handles, making a sculptural statement,” she notes. To the left, Wolf M Series wall ovens promise holiday meals made simpler, while a 48-inch cooktop range delivers Michelin-level performance. A hidden pantry holds a wine refrigerator, refrigeration drawers and a microwave. Hirsch enthuses, “With Italian heritage and my grandmother’s cooking at heart, the kitchen is sacred.”

PERFORMANCE + PRESENCE When a design firm sets its mission as “fusing styles, time periods and cultures to create interiors that defy the cliché,” something extraordinary is inevitable. Such is the hallmark of Benjamin Johnston and his team, known for unexpected aesthetic storytelling. In one recent culinary showpiece, a modern take on Hollywood Regency contrasts the home’s classical moldings, archways and ornamental details, oozing moody glamour. “Symmetry was a key influence, both visually and functionally,” Johnston explains. Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer columns on one side mirror wine columns on the other, framing a Wolf range with eight burners and brushed-brass knobs beneath a custom patinaed brass hood. Material choices like Nero Marquina marble, brass cabinetry and vintage Murano sconces extend the sense of warmth, age and quiet drama. “They are essential to the architecture of the room, where every decision supports both presence and performance.”

S O M M E L I E R ’ S H AV E N Many residential designs draw from their surroundings, especially when nestled in landscapes as striking as Sonoma Valley. Designer Lindsay Gerber embraced this approach in a 7,085-square-foot, 5-acre renovation conceived as a weekend retreat for a young San Francisco family. Central to her vision was showcasing nature. “The old kitchen was heavy with ornamental French country millwork, and vineyard views were hidden behind a wall,” Gerber recalls. “We opened everything up, connecting the space not only to the views but also two dining areas and a formal living room.” With the structure reimagined, she pursued a palette echoing olive trees and vineyard hillsides. Appliance selection proved the easiest decision. “Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove are what I have at home, and everyone knows they’re the best,” Gerber says. This Wine Country stunner features a Wolf range, Sub-Zero refrigerator and, naturally, a wine refrigerator—an essential in the region.

Known for her signature balance of comfort and elegance, she recently unveiled a fiveyear, whole-home project featuring three custom kitchens. The common thread? Her trusted partner, Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. “With two sons in sports constantly raiding my own refrigerator, I know the performance and panache of these brands firsthand,” she shares. “They offer reliability you can trust in timeless, refined design.” In the main kitchen, a panel-ready refrigerator and dishwasher integrate seamlessly into a palette of custom cabinetry with brass hardware, a striking stone that wraps countertops, backsplash and hood in continuous flow, and accents of green beloved by the homeowners. Such was the case for Kaitlyn Wolfe, tasked with creating a Balinese-inspired retreat of tranquility, moody color, indoor-outdoor flow and smart technology. In the kitchen, fulfilling that vision hinged on Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. Wolfe’s connection to the brand deepened after visiting its headquarters.

“I learned their history, saw their craftsmanship and experienced their farm-to-table ethos,” she shares.

It all served as inspiration in one of her latest projects: a kitchen wrapped with large-format porcelain tile, stone-like finishes and shou sugi ban veneer. Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove appliances integrate seamlessly into the millwork, complementing the warmth and depth of the materials. They also complement a principle by which Wolfe designs. “Sustainability is embedded into how we build and specify,” she adds. “These products are designed to perform for decades, not just a season.”

For one such household, designer Allison Lind proved a game-changing hire. “As designers, we’ve already waded through the options and identified the brands that stand out,” she explains. For this project, she envisioned a palette that felt creamy, bright, warm and modern, while ensuring functionality drove every decision—especially in the kitchen. The design includes a walk-in pantry with a grocery unloading zone, a hidden coffee bar and a cozy breakfast nook. For appliances, Lind recommended her trusted partner: Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. This magazine is about more than beautiful rooms; it’s also a celebration of the people behind them. Not only do we champion the designers, architects, builders and landscape architects who create the homes we publish, we also focus on the artisans and brands that bring them to life. It’s our honor to amplify their work and share it with an audience that truly values home design.

I also want to take a moment to thank our team. It requires enormous passion to tackle the Herculean task of producing thousands of pages of original content for every issue. From the discerning eyes of our editorial staff to the relationships of every regional team member, I am deeply grateful for their unwavering dedication. Of course, we are here thanks to the vision of our CEO and founder Adam Sandow and the work of founding editor-in-chief Pam Jaccarino, and we are all grateful for their inspiration and efforts.

It’s fitting that we end our year of anniversary celebration with a special feature, The Story of Home, honoring design visionaries. CRAFTSMANSHIP HAS ALWAYS BEEN at the heart of timeless design. In a world where

machine-made, mass-produced imports dominate the market, few companies remain committed to the artistry of hand-forged creation. Ashore Lighting, founded in Dallas in 1990 and led today

by CEO Kash Ashore, is one of those rare firms. What began as a small table-making business has evolved into a nationally recognized lighting brand, celebrated for its third-generation blacksmithing heritage and dedication to American-made quality. “Our philosophy is to create our products in the United States and stay true to handmade rather than mass production,” Ashore explains. Drawing inspiration from nature—tree branches, mountainsides and old European design—the company crafts chandeliers and fixtures that function as both illumination and art.

As they celebrate their 35th anniversary alongside Luxe’s 20th, Ashore notes, “The fact that we still build our products the same way they did 50 years ago is what separates us from the rest.”

Talk about your company’s origins. We began in Dallas, Texas, in 1990 as a small table-making business. Over time, we evolved into a full lighting company, officially launching that arm in 2001.

Today, we remain a third-generation blacksmithing family, hand-forging wrought iron lighting and accessories that stay true to our roots.

What sets your work apart in the marketplace? The industry has largely shifted to machine-made, mass-produced imports, and hand-forged production has nearly vanished in the U.S. Our commitment to building pieces one at a time—crafted like they were 50 years ago— makes us unique. Recently, we’ve also begun combining iron with onyx and quartz sourced from Brazil and Mexico, creating lighting that feels organic and truly one-of-a-kind.

Where do you find creative inspiration?

Nature plays a central role in our designs. We look at tree branches, mountain textures and organic patterns, blending them with old European influences to form chandeliers and fixtures that are both timeless and original.

How do you see your company’s role in today’s design industry? We believe being a U.S.-made manufacturer is increasingly important. By creating products by hand, as artisans have always done, we preserve a tradition of craftsmanship that resonates deeply with clients seeking authenticity.

What legacy do you hope to leave? Lighting should not only serve a function but also act as a piece of art. We want our legacy to be a portfolio of designs that illuminate spaces while reflecting the enduring value of craftsmanship.

Kelly Wearstler Made Billow

Ann Sacks has tapped longtime collaborators interior designer Kelly Wearstler and artist Andy Fleishman to expand their tile collections with new textural designs that bring a bold dimensionality to surfaces.

Wearstler’s latest collection, Made Billow, offers two styles, one muted and one smooth, each in square and rectangular shapes, that cleverly play up light and shadow. The L.A.-based designer has also added 10 new saturated color options to her handmade, ombre-glazed stoneware collection, Fade, including Sunset, a peachy pink, and Shadow, a wash of navy blue over claret. Both collections are made in Portland, Oregon, where Ann Sacks was founded in 1981. Meanwhile, Fleishman's Pillowed Leather collection marks his fifth collaboration with the company. Produced in his North Carolina studio, the 6x6-inch tiles are crafted to resemble leather, with realistic graining, subtle color variations and a curved surface that gives them an “upholstered” look. Venerable textile design firm Schumacher is no stranger to partnering with outside artists and designers. In fact, its first collaboration was with French fashion designer Paul Poiret—in 1930. “Collaborations bring a different point of view,” says the brand’s chief creative officer, Dara Caponigro. “They allow us to explore sensibilities that we might not otherwise on our own.” Two of their recent artist collaborations offer very different looks, but both weave in Schumacher’s distinct DNA. The first, with Colette Cosentino, came about when Caponigro discovered the artist’s painted canvases covering huge swaths of chain-link fence at the under-construction botanical garden Lotusland in Montecito. “My work is not loud; it whispers the imaginary,” Cosentino says. “I get to play like a child—spontaneously painting gardens, rivers, trees and birds.” Those charming scenes of flora and fauna are now represented in a line of ethereal wallcoverings. Upstate New York artist Richard Saja reached out to Schumacher when he was working on a solo show for the Musée de la Toile de Jouy in France to ask for toile he could embroider. Soon, La Liberté Americaine was underway. “Every single inch is embroidered by hand and completely one of a kind,” Saja says of the fabric. “I wanted to capture, in the most color-saturated way possible, the full range of diversity inherent in the American spirit.” schumacher.com

Currently the talk of the town, the new Populus Seattle is rooted in history. Located in Pioneer Square, Seattle’s oldest neighborhood, the 120-room boutique hotel sits in the 1907 Westland Building, which has been thoughtfully reimagined by the Denver-based hotelier. With architecture by local firm Miller Hull, the carbon-positive hotel embraces its Northwest location with a biophilic design inspired by the region’s lush landscape, most notably with G(host) Forest, an installation of three nurse logs in the entry vestibule. “This installation recalls the towering trees that once stood here at the edge of the Salish Sea prior to logging in the area,” explains Mike Jobes, Miller Hull principal. “They also nod to the old-growth Douglas fir beams that form the structure of the building.” Interiors by Curioso continue the forest theme, with a glass-wrapped solarium off the second-floor restaurant where a bevy of potted plants suspend from the ceiling. Guest rooms combine tactile materials like raw wood and forged steel befitting the building’s industrial past—it originally served as a steam supply warehouse. Upstairs on the neighborhood’s first and only rooftop bar, landscape designers Site Workshop installed native plantings that attract butterflies, hummingbirds and bumblebees. All told, Populus stands as a love letter to Seattle’s heritage, one that offers a bold new statement on sustainable design. populusseattle.com

SCENIC. THE STORIED HOME They say that good things come in threes, and Scenic. The Storied Home is living proof. Located in downtown Boise, this design store is the brainchild of local interior designers and friends Kate Loftus, Maren Swank and Kasey Fitzgerald.

After partnering on a series of pop-ups and sharing office space for several years, the trio took their collaboration to the next level and opened a brick-and-mortar store. “As designers, we really wanted to feature things that we’ve struggled to find locally,” explains Swank of the group’s starting point, which has evolved to include soft goods, housewares and furnishings with customizable upholstery. “Despite our different aesthetics in our practices, we all really appreciate the home space, so it works surprisingly well when we make selections for the store,” Loftus says.

“Ultimately, if we wouldn’t put it in our own home, then we won’t carry it,” Fitzgerald adds. More than just a place to shop, Scenic regularly offers designfocused workshops and events to the community. With new lighting lines, styling accessories and wallpaper offerings slated for the shop’s second anniversary in 2026, it’s clear the story of Scenic is just getting started. scenichome.com

MEET THE MAKER LYNN READ

Perhaps no other craft demands as delicate a balance between rigor and improvisation as glassmaking.

Portland-based Lynn Read knows this well. Since founding his studio, Vitreluxe, in 1999, he has walked the delicate line between art and utility, creating glass vessels and light fixtures that are as alluring as they are functional. LUXE spoke with Read about his past, present and future in glass. vitreluxe.com How did you get started? I came to glass through painting. Color was my first language—its emotional weight, both grounding and atmospheric, drew me in.

Over time, my interest in materiality and in how color could exist in physical form brought me to glass. It holds light and color in motion like nothing else. Its malleability is endlessly versatile.

What has kept you in glassmaking all these years?

Glass is a profoundly honest material; working with it inspires a level of craftsmanship that’s become central to my life. It demands presence and rewards patience.

Over time, I’ve come to see glass as a philosophy of making that is rooted in discipline yet always open to improvisation. That tension between control and surrender is what keeps me engaged.

Hailing from the Dominican Republic and Alabama, respectively, the duo founded Landdd in 2022 as a meeting ground for Hardy’s art direction work and Reyes’ Oaxacabased design studio, but it has become much more. We imagined Landdd as an island— a neutral terrain where our creative practices could meet. The intention was to create a space that could hold both privacy and community: a site for production, gathering and exchange.

Tell us about your textile and ceramic designs. The objects emerge from experiences—fragments of memory,

encounters in landscape and moments in culture translated into form. Through Javier’s process, material becomes narrative, and function becomes a vessel for meaning. The resulting objects inhabit the space between the everyday and the symbolic—works that are at once tactile and conceptual.

What kind of events does Landdd host?

Landdd is as much a gathering place as it is a studio. Our events move between indoor and outdoor settings—ranging from workshops in the gallery to fieldbased experiences. We also invite artists, designers and educators from around the world to lead workshops.

This community aspect is our foundation: it reflects our belief that design is most alive when it becomes a shared encounter—something that connects people to each other, to culture and to the living world.

What’s next for Vitreluxe? This winter, I’m opening my Portland showroom to the public on the first Saturday of every month and by appointment. It’s been a long time coming, and I’m excited to connect with the community.

Artistically, my next adventure is upcycling salvaged window glass. Drawing on the chemistry knowledge I’ve gained over the past two years, I’m creating a soft, tinted glass palette of my own. Whatever the form, my work is meant to invite reflection—to hold space for beauty that is felt as much as seen.

world into the intimacy of home, the foyer is responsible for first impressions, offering residents and guests a gracious welcome. Aesthetically, it should set the tone for the interiors, establishing a design throughline and teasing what’s to come. And, as “a transitory space that often provides circulation to other primary rooms,” a thoughtful choreography of furnishings arranged for flow is crucial, explains Benjamin Johnston. Like the name suggests,

As the premiere gathering space, the challenge lies in crafting a scheme that caters to hosting a crowd and daily downtime alike. It’s a balance best achieved with multiple seating areas unified by a cohesive color palette and studied approach to proportion that plays to the scale of the architecture. And, of course, no living room is complete without an emphasis on comfort. As designer Kevin Dumais notes of this Connecticut interior, the space “should foster an environment of warmth, intrigue and hospitality.”

Q&A IN CONVERSATION Hinkley has such a rich history. How has the brand evolved over the decades? We began in 1922 as an outdoor lantern company, offering traditional and contemporary collections to bring style and craftsmanship to the exterior of the home. Over the decades, Hinkley has expanded into landscape lighting, ceiling fans and decorative indoor collections. Each new category was thoughtfully added to meet changing lifestyles and to extend our reach into every area of the home.

What distinguishes Hinkley from others in the industry? We pride ourselves on being a complete solution provider. As outdoor living has grown, we’ve introduced chandeliers, fans and wet-rated fixtures to bring cohesion and comfort to patios, pool areas and beyond. Nothing is more imperative to health than quality sleep, which makes a restful bedroom a vital commodity. The work of interior designers— both historic and current—also kindles creativity, as does speaking to our customers about their needs and preferences—which often inspires a new design or color direction.

What’s new? Our two newest collections— Elysium and Quintessential—speak to the spirit of the Vervain brand. Our fourth collection with Barry Dixon, Elysium is inspired by nature, which can be seen in the patterns, colors and sensibilities of all the textiles. Textural surfaces and an ethereal quality of color and light are foundational elements of this exciting collection.

Concurrently, Quintessential fabrics, wallcoverings and silks speak to Vervain’s history. Launched in two parts over the last year, this collection interprets the most iconic Vervain patterns and colors in fresh, new directions.

A great wet bar is a must-have in

today’s haute homes, with designers taking the opportunity to turn an entertaining amenity into a moment of drama and glamour. “I always say the best bars are part utility, part theatre,” muses Eddie Maestri, the creative mastermind behind this chic exemplar, whose design cocktail calls for mirrored surfaces, standout lighting fixtures and a moody palette.

Functionally, a great bar needs to work hard, with artfully concealed storage, refrigeration and the prerequisite prep sink, but aesthetically, it’s a place to take risks, says the designer.

As a master potter, Frances Palmer has long intertwined her love for ceramics and florals. “Flowers have always been a part of my work, as I’m usually creating vases with certain blooms in mind,” the artist explains. For her second tome, Life With Flowers, Palmer focuses on floral gardening and arranging, particularly with the many species she grows on her Connecticut property.

“Even in the winter, I go out and use what’s blooming,” she notes. Whether it’s a gently curved Kimberly Denman sofa or a glowing Jonathan Browning pendant, each piece has room to express itself.

“Our curated settings have enough negative space to realize a maker’s vision,” Hughes explains. Another distinction is the showroom’s focus on craftspeople, many of them locals. “We home in on the smaller manufacturers—the people who are in their studios, pen to paper,” De Sousa notes.

“There is a sense of hand in what we offer, they are items with soul.” Those elements, and a thirst to discover artisans, keeps the duo excited after nearly 30 years in business. “We are always hunting, we never stop,” laughs De Sousa. “Bringing artisans to the spotlight is one of the most gratifying parts of this business.” desousahughes.com In their eponymous showroom, Geoffrey De Sousa and Erik Hughes offer international brands such as Liaigre and Thierry Lemaire, but many of the makers are California based, including Jiun Ho and Jonathan Browning.

LOS ANGELES Entering Harbinger is like being let loose in a treasure trove, where a kaleidoscopic array of fabrics, furnishings, wallcoverings and objects vie for attention—yet each vignette feels harmoniously arranged. That “curated chaos” is exactly what designer and owner Joe Lucas is after. “Harbinger isn’t a calm, minimalistic showroom; I mix the lines we carry like I would in a residential project— only more wildly,” he explains. The retail space is an arm of his firm, Lucas Studio, Inc., and an idea factory. He might cover a vintage chair in an unexpected fabric, display it beside a contrasting wallcovering, and pepper in European-sourced curiosities.

Fresh finds enter the showroom regularly, but Lucas is also loyal to the creatives he’s handpicked, like the Lucie de Moyencourt ceramic shells he’s carried since 2020. LIGHT ON WHITE DESIGN STUDIO For a sprawling sun-drenched penthouse in downtown Miami, interior designer Alizee Brion kept to a soothing, neutral palette with accents of blue and green peppered throughout. But for the residence’s two powder rooms, she took a different approach, deploying what she calls “a concentrated expression of color” inspired by the Biscayne Bay views. With the alluring colors of the water serving as muse, Brion succeeded in creating spaces with “wow factor.” Take the blue-swathed bath (previous page), the crown jewel of which is a striking vanity carved from blue agate. The windowless space led Brion to embrace an overall moody vibe, explaining that “in the context of a Miami condo, which is always flooded with natural light, it’s an unexpected contrast.”

In a separate powder room (shown right), Brion selected a Calacatta green marble for the pedestal sink. A side-mount faucet keeps the vanity contemporary and minimal, while a plaster wall finish provides a resilient surface. “Plaster is extremely practical in a bathroom because of its waterproof qualities,” says the designer. “It allowed us to forgo a backsplash and provided a texture with depth and movement that has a hand-crafted quality, which we love to incorporate in our designs.” lightonwhite.com

For the second powder room, Brion opted for a vanity crafted from Calacatta green marble sourced from Arca. Holly Hunt sconces abut a Bower Studios mirror. The walls are finished in Galápagos Green by Tadelakt.

NATURAL SELECTION THE WISEMAN GROUP “In this bathroom, it’s all about the stone,” says Megan Munoz, associate design director at The Wiseman Group. After walking past this semi-precious quartzite at IRG Stone many times before, hoping to find the perfect client for it one day, the opportunity to use it finally presented itself with the owners of this Palo Alto residence. Imagined for the home’s lower level, where entertainingoriented spaces like a media and billiard room are located, the powder room takes on an apropos club-like feel. With dramatic contrast and veining, the dynamic blue-green stone covers two walls and was also used to create a floating sink and lower storage shelf. The surrounding design elements, including a floor-to-ceiling mirrored backsplash, further enhance the stone’s presence. Alix Day, Principal and Founder of Alix Day Architecture + Design, blends both fields together and also brings a planning mindset to her creations. “Early in my career, I learned the importance of considering how a contractor would build my designs,” she shares. “This foresight has helped create a smooth process for contractors and homeowners during construction, preventing delays and ensuring clean execution. I am often told that my problem solving, technical and project management skills make for an easier journey through the various phases of design and construction.” Day originally launched her firm in 2012 to focus on residential architecture and later expanded into the design space. Day asserts that her work does not consistently fall into one specific design style. She says, “I am open to exploring and interpreting the client’s needs and creating a design that is responsive and unique to their lifestyle, whatever their preferred aesthetic.” Describing oft-seen elements of her work, she highlights, “We love warm, layered looks, a variety of textures and materials, vintage and new items—plus something a little unexpected.” The team’s goal is to “make the home feel lived-in and curated.”

Construction Surprises

Remodel projects sometimes contain hidden issues that result in change orders and cost increases. Day explains, “On a large remodel project I once worked on, every time a wall was opened we found more and more issues with the home.” The resulting fixes were difficult and communication—both between Day and the contractor, and Day and the homeowner—was key to solving problems.

Rather than compromise quality by adding seams, we assembled a five-person ‘bucket brigade’ and passed the millwork up through the stair shaft, one piece at a time.”

OFTENTIMES A LOVE OF DESIGN runs in the family. Jacqueline Quasney, Owner and Principal Designer of Q Design Studio, grew up amidst the world of design and developed her love of it early on.

“My family owned a custom home building company in the South Seattle area and had a huge influence on my aesthetic and building sense,” she shares. “And my mom, Mary Pat Curran, is a retired interior designer who is always happy to consult with me on projects and recommend her favorite paint chips.” Quasney was raised in the Pacific Northwest before moving as an adult to the East Coast, spending time in London, England, and then back west to San Francisco before returning to Mercer Island in 2020. After working at a prestigious design firm, she launched her own company in 2023. Quasney emphasizes, “I feel incredibly lucky that I can pursue my dreams in a creative field and help build unique family homes that will be enjoyed for many years to come!”

Project Process

“I start out with a client questionnaire to get to know the client and define their style before we begin with moodboards,” Quasney says. “I pride myself on being able to design for many different aesthetics and am thrilled that I have been able to work on a variety of projects, from more traditional to contemporary and modern.”

Delivering designs in the preferred style of the client is critical to Quasney and the team.

Design Details

A favorite project of Quasney’s is a from-thestuds build she worked on in San Francisco.

She says, “My husband and I embarked on a historical remodel of a 1903 Edwardian condo for our growing family. The home had a variety of original features that were preserved, such as a phone booth and built-in rope pull system that connected the front door to the upstairs!”

Inspiring Idea

“My mom consistently demonstrated the most important trait for working in client services is to always be kind,” Quasney emphasizes.

“She provided grace and understanding with clients and tradespeople, even in challenging moments. I think in an industry like ours— where details can be missed or things go sideways—that having a sense of kindness when approaching difficult situations is always the best course of action.”

WHEN A DESIGNER BUILDS a close relationship with their client, they are able to deliver unique and personal custom designs. The founders of Studio Boden launched in January 2025 to “create spaces that truly reflect the people who live in them,” Lead Designer Erika Blank explains. Blank and Lead Designer Rosemary Spiller envisioned a boutique design studio where clients work directly with senior designers from start to finish, supported by Project Manager Killarney Loufek.

Spiller shares, “We approach each project in a hands-on process—listening closely, refining ideas collaboratively and guiding clients through every decision so the final result is both intentional and personal.” Loufek details the background on their choice of name, adding, “The word ‘boden’ is Scandinavian for ‘shelter’ or ‘dwelling,’ and it embodies what we do: create homes that are a refuge for the people who live in them.”

Industry Experience

Before launching Studio Boden, Blank and Spiller worked in both larger design firms and smaller, boutique settings. Spiller notes, “That range gave us an understanding of how to balance the creative side of design with the practicalities of managing timelines, budgets and client expectations.” Blank adds, “Over the years, we’ve learned that listening is as important as designing. Collaborating with clients from different walks of life has sharpened our ability to interpret their styles and stories and then translate those into spaces that feel personal and functional.” The team also has a strong foundation in project management and construction coordination, which allows them to confidently guide clients through the technical side of building and remodeling.

Creative Vision

Loufek emphasizes, “Our work stands out because we don’t push a single ‘signature style’ onto clients. Rather, we create for their preferences. What ties our projects together isn’t a look, but an ethos: creating spaces that are custom, livable and timeless.” This philosophy allows the studio to design with both flexibility and intention, ensuring each home reflects the personalities and priorities of the people who live there. The result is a body of work that feels cohesive in spirit yet individual, balancing beauty with functionality.

SOMETIMES A BIG INSIGHT LEADS ONE to create a new business.

At least, that is the case for Stacy Becker, Founder and Principal of White Label Interiors. “I launched my company because I realized the interior design process could be more fun,” she shares. “I started White Label Interiors seven years ago because I thought my insights and creative visions would be a benefit to my clientele and that I could approach the field differently than other designers. This process should not be a nightmare—it should feel like happy hour!”

Becker’s 25 years in the field support her perspective. She explains, “I’ve seen the design side, the labor and trades side, the builder side and more. My multi-faceted experiences help me understand all aspects of residential design.” Her plans for the company focus on more full-scope projects. She notes, “I love to begin with clients at the initial vision stage for the home.”

Design Style

“My work stands out because I strive to find a balance of tradition and contemporary design,” Becker shares. “There always needs to be an ethos of a home that exhibits a sense of place.”

The team’s projects are often based in places that provide a rugged but luxurious lifestyle in Washington and, Becker enthuses, “that’s also where I yearn to be.”

Career Path

Becker’s varied background positioned her perfectly to launch White Label Interiors. She outlines, “My past has been very layered! I started with CAD education early on in high school, ran a professional painting company, sold real estate, received my bachelors degree in interior design, worked for highly reputable interior designers in the Seattle area and worked for a design-build firm before starting White Label Interiors.”

Meaningful Mentor

Becker worked for Seattle-based interior designer Holly McKinley earlier in her career. She shares, “Holly taught me so much about aesthetics, how to compose the perfect color palette and other things you can’t learn in school.”

e’re really good listeners,” says Rick Berry. It’s a handy skill for a residential designer like Berry and his colleague, architect Ryan Yoshida, to have in general, but especially if they have four clients rather than the usual one or two—and even more so when two happen to be siblings, and one of those siblings and his partner live an ocean away in Japan.

Berry and Yoshida had worked with the group before, designing a four-unit Portland home to accommodate the siblings and their parents. This time around, the family asked the architects for another multigenerational dwelling—a getaway in Bend on a lot abutting Forest Service land looking toward multiple Cascade peaks. “They wanted a simple plan, for it to feel as comfortable for one or two people as for eight or 10, and for all of the main rooms to have views,” Yoshida says of their brief.

Beyond listening to their clients’ needs, Berry and Yoshida were also attentive to the sloped site. “The initial concept was to have the home float around and lightly touch the landscape, so half the building is cantilevered over the hillside,” says Berry, adding that landscape architect Eric Bode was instrumental in planning how the residence would sit on the property. The structure itself is composed of a pair of stacked volumes, with the upper shifted slightly over the lower in a move, notes Berry,

reminiscent of the way tectonic plates shift. On the upper level, the architecture team placed a pair of primary bedrooms and a media room. The lower level is home to a suite for the parents, as well as the kitchen, dining area and living room, the last anchored by a board-formed concrete fireplace. “The spaces aren’t large,” Yoshida notes. “They are intimate and functional.”

To further root the dwelling into the surrounding landscape of pine trees and lava rocks, Berry and Yoshida chose cedar cladding both inside and out as well as basalt for the site walls.

Of course, given the minimal materials palette and spare design, the margin of error was small, making general contractor Joe Waggoner and his team key in realizing the vision.

As capturing the views was paramount, there are windows on all sides, including a massive 40-foot sliding door running the length of the main public spaces. Despite this abundance of glazing, the home still feels protected and private. A generous overhang shades the slider, shielding the house from the bright high desert sun in

the summer and the snow in the winter, and a cedar screen artfully conceals a deck at one end of the dwelling.

Designer Kathy Vuong, who frequently collaborates with the architecture team, took on the interiors, imbuing them with warmth and serenity. “The palette was natural,” says Vuong, noting the range of creams, pale grays and taupes used throughout. She intermixed the occasional darker gray or black hue to serve as grounding elements and chose soft materials like plaster, linen, cashmere and wool for their subtle texture.

Vuong kept spaces uncluttered, opting for furniture with silhouettes that read as warmly minimalist and midcentury, including a variety of rocking chairs. “The pieces are like the family—thoughtful, comfortable, efficient and light. They’re a reflection of the calmness they bring into the home,” she says. In keeping with the desire for understatement, most of the lighting is concealed in the ceiling, but to “add a little vitality,” notes Vuong, she chose a few bolder decorative fixtures. Over the dining table, for example, hangs a grouping of pendants she likens to the moon and stars.

This collection of round fixtures of varying sizes sway in the breeze when the doors are open, bringing a subtle touch of movement.

Not only is the overall feel of the home simple and effortless, but the process was, too.

“They were great decision makers,” says Yoshida, and Vuong agrees. “They were the easiest people to work with,” she shares. “And the way they treated each other was beautiful. It’s a testament to how their parents raised them, and the magic they created.”

T

he vernacular of architect Stephen Sutro’s two homes could not be more different.

His primary residence, shared with his family of five, is a 1913 Craftsman dwelling. But when planning their vacation getaway in Victor, Idaho, he created something else entirely. “I wanted a counterpoint to our traditional house,” he says. Working with colleagues John Simenic and Max Taschek, Sutro took inspiration from the landscape—and not just in a general “frame-the-view” way. Rather, he wanted to create a dwelling that felt true to the region, celebrated views of the Big Hole Mountains and maximized light through all seasons.

To the casual observer, the building’s form is simple, but it is full of complex moves that general contractors Kurt Mitchell and Todd Witek executed with precision. For instance, Sutro conceived of a roof with sloped planes and clerestory windows angled to allow sunlight to penetrate every room—and to capture solar energy with panels on the southern exposure. “Even in colder, darker times of the year, the house is filled with light,” the architect says. He also designed the dwelling’s laminated timbers to be hung from a concealed steel frame, making them appear to magically float above the dogtrot entry and allowing windows to span from floor to ceiling.

On the exterior, Sutro selected understated, low-maintenance materials. The gray Accoya wood siding will weather gracefully and never need to be restained. Likewise, the standing seam roof is finished with a muted, almost chalky appearance. “It was important to me that nothing look too shiny on the exterior,” he says. “As they age, I want the materials to look as good as, or even better than, when they were installed.”

Inside, Sutro and designer Nicholas Low settled on a palette of warm wood, terrazzo slabs with a neutral palette, and blackened, waxed steel. “The wood ceiling is a good foil to all the glass,” notes Sutro, who also wanted low-fuss materials inside. Accordingly, they chose wood flooring with visible knots and a wire-brushed finish so it wouldn’t show every scuff.

For the furnishings, Low looked for elements that felt connected to the landscape “without slipping into the expected mountain lodge style,” he says. So, he selected pieces with sleek lines and subtle textures in lieu of rustic finishes, antlers and sheepskins. The overall aesthetic is calm and neutral, but Low pushed Sutro to weave in notes of color and pattern, including the living room’s blue leather sofa and armchairs upholstered in a herringbone check. “I am probably a little too conservative with color,” Sutro admits. “I’m very happy with the result here, and I’m glad we went for it.”

It’s not just a contrast in appearance that marks this home from his main residence; Sutro knew the family would live differently here as well. With muddy fly-fishing waders and snowy ski boots in mind, he conceived the dogtrot entrance between the garage and front door that functions like an outdoor mudroom. Likewise cognizant of the family’s active lifestyle, Low opted for performance fabrics and leather upholstery as well as stain-resistant wool rugs.

As a vacation retreat, the family wanted places to congregate.

“We designed the living space as just one mosh pit where everyone can gather,” Sutro laughs. They also eschewed dedicated rooms for each child, instead letting the kids pick where to sleep each time they visit. However, perhaps the biggest change in this

home is what’s not included. “Our primary residence has all the things that you need to fulfill responsibilities to work and school,” Sutro says. “In this family retreat, you won’t find an office or homework stations; instead, there are places to relax and connect with nature.”

uring their years vacationing in the San Juan Islands, this Seattle family experienced many fortuitous moments, such as the time they spotted a pod of endangered Southern Resident killer whales during a picnic. But it was a ferry ride home that changed everything for them.

“As we were leaving, we realized this is where we wanted to be,” the husband says. In two more successive strokes of luck, they discovered and purchased a spectacular stretch of coastline on False Bay and hired architect Joe Herrin and general contractor David M. Elwell to design and construct a house for the property.

“We envisioned a simple yet sturdy home, one that deferred to the clean smell of the sea and the sounds of eagles calling and waves lapping against the shore,” adds the wife.

“The level of exposure here is unusual—it’s open to the Strait of Juan de Fuca, so it is almost like being on the ocean,” Herrin says.

“But it’s also a distinct microclimate,” he adds, explaining that the property sits in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains and is technically a desert, right down to the native prickly pears. “It’s very open with a lot of brush, which reminded me of Sea Ranch in Northern California, so we were inspired by the windswept building forms and materials utilized there.” Navigating the site’s rocks, winds and neighboring homes was a “bit of a puzzle,” recalls Herrin, and the resulting cedar-clad form, slightly pinched at the middle, is one he calls a “bow tie shape.” While the front of the dwelling looks to the water, its rear façade faces a 15-foot-high rock face that shelters the back patio. “It serves as both a prospect and a refuge,” the architect notes.

exceptional,” Elwell adds. “During excavation for the structural foundation, I was struck by how well we were able to minimize site disturbance. In the end, the house looks like it was gently placed there.” That effortless look is also in part due to landscape designer Wocka Hubber. “The site is naturally very raw,” he says. “The Salish Sea breeze means few plants can weather the environment.

We chose several Monterey cypress and native shore pines to help wrap and shelter the residence.”

When organizing the interior, Herrin, alongside teammates Chris Wong and Rachel Belcher, leaned into its role as a retreat.

They devised a dramatic, prow-like window in the living room that doubles as a reading space and karaoke stage. Upstairs is another reading nook and a loft suite with bunk beds. “We spend long weekends and school breaks here, and we also enjoy bringing our parents up and hosting friends,” the husband says. “It’s morning beverages on the deck observing wildlife; puzzles and games if we stay in; or just giving ourselves permission to read a whole book,” the wife reflects.

“We want this house to evolve with us,” the wife adds, and so, in concert with Belcher, they are furnishing the home slowly. One of the most significant pieces is the dining room chandelier, commissioned from lighting designer Yuri Kinoshita. “I’d seen her woven fixtures in Seattle restaurants and loved the light they cast,” she notes. Another inspired feature is the couple’s enclosed bathtub. “The traditional look of a wooden ofuro is unbeatable, but I wanted something more practical for us,” the wife explains. The architect’s answer was a design that encases a standard bathtub with cedar. “We’re fans of the Asian influence on Pacific Northwest design and its strong connection to nature,” Herrin says, noting that the dwelling is also a model of efficiency, generating more energy than it uses. “We’ve not just focused this home on the water, we’ve celebrated aspects of the site you might not expect,” he adds.

“We’ve stitched this house into the environment.”

ooking back from Lake Washington, this thoughtfully reimagined Mercer Island home offers a stunning counterpoint to the water.

Framed in sculptural steel and outfitted with retractable glass doors, the residence seamlessly dissolves the boundaries between interior and exterior. And come sunset, backlit onyx panels in the dining room and bar emit a soft, radiant light. But while the clean lines and restrained palette speak to an aesthetic that lauds simplicity, the behind-the-scenes machinations were anything but effortless.

“Before the remodel, everything was perfect except for the house,” recalls architect Regan McClellan about his first site visit with the homeowners, a couple with two teenagers. Set on a prime lakeside parcel, the existing structure was a dated Mediterranean-style dwelling with dark finishes, small windows and a layout that largely turned its back on the view. “It was the right size and location,” he says, “but stylistically, the opposite of the streamlined, modern look they envisioned.”

Joined by interior designer Magdalena Kita and his firm’s Laura Taheny, McClellan embarked on a comprehensive renovation executed by general contractor Steve Moeller that respects the original home’s footprint but erases nearly everything else, starting with reorienting the primary living spaces toward the water. “We maximized windows and doors to connect the house to the lake, which is what drew this family there in the first place,” says Taheny, noting that the husband grew up on the island and has a special affinity for the place.

A 6-foot-wide pivoting glass entry door initiates the home’s transparency. Just inside, the stair, once a sweeping curved structure with an ornate railing, is now a floating sculpture with rift-sawn European white oak treads and blackened-steel risers. Adjacent to the entry is a bar, where visitors receive a warm welcome with a cocktail or glass of wine. Its statement-making stone wall is reminiscent of the lichen on the rocks that line the shore outside.

At the heart of the design is a consistent structural rhythm established by steel beams and columns that elegantly frame spaces while keeping sight lines open and uninterrupted. “We sized the steel to

read beautifully to the eye,” McClellan explains. “Everything is welded, not bolted, and then painted for refinement rather than left exposed for an industrial effect.” This same approach continues outside, where a steel-and-glass canopy outfitted with infrared heaters and ambient lighting for year-round comfort hovers over the poolside terrace.

The wife was drawn to Scandinavian simplicity and organic materials, and Kita layered artisanal touches throughout. “They wanted restraint, but the house needed soul,” the designer says. In the dining room, for example, a raw-edge table made from salvaged wood lit by a chandelier composed of solid glass drops echoes the natural textures and lines of the book-matched onyx wall behind it.

“The point was to bring the materials and feeling of nature inside,” Kita notes. That feature, among many other technically demanding elements, was orchestrated by Moeller and his team. Here and behind the bar near the entry, they carefully added backlighting

behind the stone in a way that produces a soft glow. “Those panels are quite thin, and we worked hard to avoid shadows,” Moeller notes.

Throughout, Kita established a color story of gray and cream with walnut accents as seen in the living room, where a stone-colored leather sectional offers a barely-there contrast to a fireplace wall composed of light-toned feathered tile and rich wood. Similarly, in the primary suite, dark-hued linens pair with a bed crafted with creamy leather. The kitchen’s dual islands— one for entertaining, one for daily family dining—are made up of overlapping layers of white-veined Dekton and honed gray Caesarstone. “Details like this matter,” the designer says. “They bring a peaceful feeling to a room.”

The finished home is now “calm and curated,” Kita observes.

“It’s completely in tune with the water, the light and the family who resides here.”
