Creative Pursuits

As I write my final letter to you as the founding Editor in Chief of LUXE Interiors + Design, I am filled with joy and gratitude. Twenty years ago, we had a vision for what a regional design magazine could be. We started, as I believe all great things do, with a small, passionate and industrious team. Quietly, we built LUXE from one region into the powerhouse it is today. As I reflect on its influence— and consider the thousands of projects, professionals and covers that I have had the good fortune to publish—I am immensely proud. Having an ace team around me was invaluable. I thank all the editors, art directors, writers, photographers and stylists who make our stories compelling and our pages shine.

Most of all, I want to express appreciation to the architecture and design community. I admire people who are in both a creative and business pursuit, and it’s the architects, interior designers, builders, landscape architects, craftspeople and artisans who have been a constant source of inspiration. Thank you for letting me share your work with our audience. There are many more voices in design to discover and publish. I welcome my friend and colleague Jill Cohen into the Editor in Chief seat.

As I have an eye to the future and step into my new role as Chief Creative and Content Officer for the soon-to-launch LUXE DESIGN GUILD, I am energized about creating a new platform that will champion design. I’ve loved my time at the magazine, and I am very excited for what’s next.

NEW DIGS FRED SEGAL HOME

In 1961, Fred Segal founded his eponymous L.A. lifestyle boutique, pioneering the shop-inshop concept and quickly becoming known as “the curator of cool.” Fast-forward to this spring and the brand (now helmed by business partners Blair Carlton and Keith Granet) has launched its first dedicated home decor shop at HD Buttercup in Culver City. “It’s becoming a destination for quality home design, and we wanted to be front and center in this furnishing hub,” says Carlton. “We wanted to provide a launching pad for artisans who have beautiful products but who may not have access to exposure at the level a Fred Segal Home store can provide,” adds Granet. Alongside classic pieces like rock-and-roll and fashion photography from Peter Fetterman Gallery and vintage Donghia Murano-glass lamps, visitors will find surprises including accessories from Opame Collective, game tables from Impatia, pilates reformers from Frame Fitness and crystals from The Gem and I. hdbuttercup.com

SUITE LIFE

THE HOLLYWOOD ROOSEVELT

This March, the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel unveiled two redesigned luxury suites, the Gable and Lombard Penthouse (below and bottom)—where romance blossomed between screen legends Clark Gable and Carole Lombard in the 1930s—and the Johnny Grant Apartment, home to the late television producer and honorary mayor of Hollywood during the 1990s. The accommodations (which share access to a 3,000-square-foot rooftop dining terrace and garden) were conceived by Los Angeles interior designer Kevin Klein to be comfortable for stays short or long, and can also be combined into an opulent single buyout. Klein took inspiration from the Golden Age of Hollywood, bringing in Italian marble, wood paneling and antiques from around the world, including a retractable 18 th -century French tapestry that disguises a theater screen in the penthouse. The apartment, which includes an office, kitchen, six-seat bar, and dining room for 16, is ideal for entertaining. Adding to the suites’ charm are hand-painted ceiling murals rediscovered during the renovation. thehollywoodroosevelt.com

Sarah Weichel This isn’t just any living room—it’s the heart of Swike Design principal Sarah Weichel’s own Atwater Village home. The LUXE Next In Design 99 talent welcomes us in. @swike The inspo: We aim to create spaces that have soul and character. I feel strongly about vintage furniture and I always try to come up with unexpected furnishing floor plans. The stars: The ’70s Afra and Tobia Scarpa Soriana chair (upholstered in brushed wool) is a favorite of mine. It’s so comfortable, but still has an edge and cool factor to it. The Norma sculpture screen by Tim Vranken for Stahl + Band is the perfect way to fill what would have been dead space, and one of the few contemporary pieces here. The art is Sara Marlowe Hall from Tappan Collective. The palette: Always go for a creamier white than you think! We chose creams and warm neutrals. Instead of black, we used charcoal, and we favored raw umber over green. That and limewashing the walls brought back the spirit of our 1920s Spanish abode.

Sarah Solis In the primary bedroom of an L.A. home, bespoke pieces and lush materials sing in a design scheme

For a new, inspiring design destination, head over to Verdugo Plaza in Glassell Park, where interior designer Candace Shure has opened her studio and retail space, Shure Design Studio. There, an ever-changing mix of vintage treasures and global finds mingles with pieces from California makers including Atelier Saucier table linens and LuvHaus ceramics. “Opening a store has been a dream of mine, and seeing it come together has been a transformative experience,” shares Shure. “I’m excited about the vases and mugs from KuuPottery in Seattle; Kassandra Guzman’s colors are so fresh that they’ve become a hallmark of the types of items you can expect to find here.” Works by Melina Finkelstein, brass pieces by Fernanda Sibilia and candles from Flamingo Estate and The Floral Society are even more reason to visit. shuredesignstudio.com

by LUXE Next In Design 99 honoree Sarah Solis. She shares how this space came to be. @sarahsolis

The inspo: The homeowner wanted design that felt luxurious but not flashy, and this space is the ultimate expression of that balance: a play between serene and sensual, and a haven from the busy city. The stars: We’re all about creating restorative spaces that evoke emotion and inspiration, and celebrating the beauty of natural materials. Here, claro walnut and rich wood tones are a major element, inspired by masters like Isamu Noguchi and George Nakashima. Walls upholstered in panels of Pierre Frey linen, a custom Sarah Solis Design Studio bed and vintage lamps complete the effect. The palette: To inspire a sense of calm, I utilized a restrained palette with singular bold moments and materials from the natural world.

The gorgeous walnut brings a sense of grounding and warmth to this bedroom. See our Next In Design 99

INSPIRING MINDS

HEARTH HOMES STAYS

In Santa Barbara, Katie LabourdetteMartinez and Olivia Wahler, the sisters-inlaw behind Hearth Homes Interiors, are reviving the bed-and-breakfast concept with Hearth Homes Stays. Reimagined by the duo, The Craft House Inn (below) opened last year, recently followed by the Boardwalk Beach House, and they are now readying a downtown Victorian. We find out more. hearthhomesstays.com

Why B&Bs? As kids, we’d travel to B&Bs with our families and create amazing memories. Many of these establishments fell out of sync in the postCOVID world, so we wanted to rethink the concept in a way that allows today’s families to create those same kinds of memories.

What’s your approach? We honor the original design of the home, uncovering and restoring its beauty. From there, we blend form and functionality for our guests. We want to wow them aesthetically, but also make sure to provide them with everything they need during a stay.

How does the area influence you? Our goal is to create a sense of place, and to both honor and take advantage of everything Santa Barbara has to o er. With an emphasis on indoor-outdoor flow, gardens and the overall feel of the home, we want our projects to feel like Santa Barbara itself: beautiful, lighthearted and full of character.

CALIFORNIA DETAIL

TWO COLLECTIONS BY L.A. DESIGNERS OFFER FUNCTIONAL WAYS TO ENJOY THE WEST COAST SPIRIT.

To infuse your home with soul down to the most chic details, look no further than Louisa Pierce and Emily Ward of design firm Pierce & Ward’s hardware line with Modern Matter (top). The collection includes pulls, brackets, a soap dish and a door knocker that bring an unconventional energy to kitchens, bathrooms and beyond. Created in unlacquered brass with betel nut and pine wood accents, the designs, which are also available at the studio’s Los Feliz shop, play on Egyptian and Jazz Age motifs, exuding the designers’ boho-meetsglam style. modern-matter.com; pierceandward.com

Ceramics shaped by the hands of local makers will bring a uniquely Californian sense of organic refinement to your interiors. Kym Gold, co-founder of True Religion apparel, has relaunched her tableware company, Style Union Home, as Dumæ (above). It was memories of family dinners that first inspired Gold to explore ceramics, and each piece is crafted by L.A.-based ceramists to bring an artisanal touch to the table. To celebrate the change, she reintroduced her popular Les Femmes collection, which includes vessels, pitchers and bowls in one-of-a-kind forms. dumae.co

DESIGNER KIT KEMP REFLECTS ON HOW HER LOVE OF INTERNATIONAL CRAFT IS AN EVER-PRESENT THREAD THROUGH HER CREATIVE ENDEAVORS.

If the recent quiet luxury trend is meant to be a visual palate cleanser, Kit Kemp’s interiors are the most delightful and sense-stirring amuse-bouche you’ve ever had: color-forward, pattern-happy, and embellished with a true connoisseur’s love of global art and craft. As the co-owner and creative director of Firmdale Hotels, with properties in London and New York, Kemp welcomes guests into her bespoke, kaleidoscopic world everyday on a single premise: “Even the most jaded business travelers should find something in the hotel that piques their curiosity, offers a sense of whimsy and brings out their inner child,” she says.

Nestled among Tribeca’s cobblestone streets, in the heart of Manhattan, the Warren Street Hotel—her latest hospitality venture—is a celebration of contemporary art and international artistry. Here, Kemp has gathered works by an impressive globe-spanning coterie of artisans, including Argentine designer

Cristián Mohaded’s basketweave towers and Ugandan artist Sanaa Gateja’s paperbead tapestries that mingle alongside Christopher Kurtz’s stepping-stones table. But she especially has a soft spot for textiles. “It’s the love of the loom,” she confesses. “When you’re bringing in that handmade quality, it doesn’t matter if you’re a crafter in Scotland or a weaver in Guatemala, they all have a made-by-hand feel, and you can see the handwriting of the person who made it.”

Kemp believes every textile is threaded with the DNA of its birthplace, whether that’s India, Mexico or Estonia, and just the simple act of thinking about those places spurs her creativity. The influence of this imaginative approach is evident in her new collection of fabrics and wallpaper for British heritage brand GP & J Baker.

The line’s whimsical prints feature the folkloric plates of ceramicist Robina Jack, a potato-stamped grid honoring the work of Pop artist Joe Tilson, and a colorful take on an archival 1920s woodland scene, among others. Reflects Kemp, “To look at things that fill you with love and suddenly be able to create a fabric, cushion, or bedspread around them—Isn’t that the absolute best way to design?” kitkemp.com, gpjbaker.com

Bright Light

HUGO TORO HAS BURST ONTO THE DESIGN SCENE WITH DAZZLING INTERIORS, BUT HE’S ONLY JUST GETTING STARTED.

Since last fall, interior design aficionados have been making a pilgrimage to an astonishing aerie on New York City’s Upper East Side. At just 700 square feet, the space is a fever dream of rich color and dynamic form featuring oxblood walls, a golden-glass chandelier, lily padshaped tables and a green-lacquered fireplace with ripples like the surface of a sun-dappled pond. Combining historic and contemporary elements beneath a handpainted barrel-vaulted ceiling, the interior is unlike anything else in the city.

Its creative mastermind is Hugo Toro, a rapidly rising young interior designer and architect who has designed some of the buzziest spaces in the UK and Europe. Later this year, the designer will unveil his second collection of limited-edition furniture at Paris’s Kolkhoze gallery and debut his first hotel project, Orient Express La Minerva, in Rome. The jewelbox room in New York—the Villa Albertine Atelier, located on the top floor of the landmarked Payne Whitney Mansion, which serves as the U.S. headquarters for the French ministry of culture—is the Franco-Mexican’s first project stateside.

“Fortunately, I am a bit hyperactive,” Toro says with a laugh. He’s in his elegant Paris office, outfitted with lush palm plants and artwork, including some of his own. “I sketch every single day and also paint for myself,” he adds, pointing to an easel with a canvas in progress. Toro takes pride in his 360-degree approach. “I like to do everything and create a full experience.”

Born in the Lorraine region of France to a French father and Mexican mother, Toro’s aesthetic influences are far flung, reflecting not only his dual heritage but also his time studying architecture in Vienna and Los Angeles. Intense color combinations and dramatic stonework are signatures of his interiors, but the primary thread linking all his work, he claims, is “narrative.” Toro’s forthcoming projects will certainly be no exception, possessing narratives all their own. “I don’t like to get bored,” he says. “What is important is to always create a new story.” hugotoro.com

photo: stephan julliard, portrait: alexandre onimus. From the U.S. to Europe, Hugo Toro’s singular style is a visual delight. For a living room in Paris, he added a touch of modernity with a rotating marble screen that lives alongside leather, wood and brass accents.

Eastern Appeal

DIVING DEEP INTO HISTORICAL CRAFTSMANSHIP, A NEW BRAND SCRIBES A LOVE LETTER TO THE LEVANT.

Creativity always thrives at the crossroads, where diff erent worlds entangle into something new. Perhaps no crossroad is as old and storied as the Levant. Its boundaries shift like sand over time, seeping south into Egypt, north into Turkey, and west into Syria—de ned by cultural currents over geographic lines. At the crux of continents, the Eastern Mediterranean region is marked not by centuries but by civilizations, fed by the historic Silk Road and Mediterranean shipping routes. Each chapter has carved new layers of art and culture.

In its honor, Levant—a new home line founded by childhood friends Süreya Köprülü and Naz Muessel—pays homage to this monumental legacy. Merging shared passions for history and design, their new tabletop collection showcases craft traditions molded by these intersecting cultures through millennia. “This mishmash is so elemental to the Levant,” says Muessel. “Our brand is about celebrating the beauty in overlapping cultures.”

Their mood board is both ancient and intimate, mixing archaeology with personal memories. With Köprülü being half

Turkish, and Muessel half Iranian, they “both come from a very mixed cultural background, and have spent time in the Levant,” says Köprülü. “We talk about things we had in our childhood homes, or comb through museum archives and snapshots from our travels,” adds Muessel, “or sometimes it’s discovering makers that we didn’t know existed.” The result is a stylish mix of ceramics, glassware and table linens. Imagine bowls made by Egyptian ceramic masters, platters featuring 16th-century blueand-white Iznik motifs, and gossamer Turkish lace placemats and napkins woven with playful patterns.

Rather than a sweeping modernization of historic handcrafts, the aim is to “reimagine them,” explains Köprülü. “Working with the artisans is very important to our process.” The duo plays with proportions, enlarging archival motifs to celebrate their intricate beauty, or adapting old techniques with new materials. In spirit, every piece they make becomes a living memory of the places that inspired them: the sacred sites of fallen empires, the passionate communities keeping old ways alive and the bustling ancient cities unfolding new stories. Together, they form “a more nuanced take on Eastern aesthetics,” says Köprülü. “We want to show people that there’s so much more to see.” thelevantshop.com

TRADITIONAL STAINED-GLASS TECHNIQUES FIND NEW LIFE THROUGH THE WORK OF A DIGITAL ARTIST.

While the ancient art of stained-glass windows has brightened our lives for a thousand years, its ethereal quality continues to captivate us today. Visitors still stand awestruck beneath the windows at Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s centennial celebration of the American Wing this fall will be a new Tiffany Studios stainedglass acquisition. But when it comes to the future, can stained-glass studios rooted in historic practices pivot to support contemporary artists interested in the medium’s capabilities? For one studio in France, the answer is yes

When an important stained-glass restoration is undertaken in Europe, it is often Ateliers Loire, located in Chartres, France, who is brought on to advise. Though the family-run workroom remains

committed to traditional techniques, it also has an eye on the future. “We want to appeal to emerging artistic trends so that we can be innovators in the field of glass,” explains Bruno Loire, grandson of the studio’s founder. But being asked to realize digital artworks was a first.

In 2022, Ismail Tazi, co-founder of Trame, a gallery focused on limited-edition pieces based on digital art, approached American generative artist Jeff Davis about a collaboration for a new series called, “Craft Nouveau.” His idea was to expand on the gallery’s unique model by pairing generative artists with artisans. “Technology and craft have always gone together, which surprises people,” Tazi explains. And he suspected Davis’ work could translate beautifully into stainedglass pieces made by Ateliers Loire.

After learning how stained-glass panels are constructed during an overseas visit, Davis developed algorithms that would determine the colorful grid patterns of each piece. He titled the collection “Optimism,” inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s writings about “optimistic tones” of color and the beauty of cast light. “These are the first stained glass windows designed entirely by a computer but produced with a technique that dates to the Middle Ages,” says Loire. It’s a partnership that’s not just giving digital art a foothold in the design world but safeguarding skilled handwork. “Through projects like this,” adds Tazi, “technology can help preserve our global common heritage.” trameparis.com

Deep, rich, earthy hues are taking the place of white walls and monotone creamon-cream palettes. We have been drawn toward these complex shades and dramatic tones, which seem to bring more depth and intimacy to our overall design aesthetic.

DUAL IDENTITY

For Palma’s first stateside collection, which debuted at Verso Gallery’s Hamptons outpost, the Sao Paulo, Brazil, studio set out to experiment with non-traditional materials and compositions juxtaposed against basic shapes. That concept is realized in the atelier’s Esfera Table Lamp (shown), where a sharp, conical linen shade rests atop a rounded aluminum body and stainless-steel base. Upon closer look, you’ll see the textured body is covered in aluminum candy wrappers, creating a lunar effect. verso.nyc

Midcentury master Italian designer and architect Gianfranco Frattini created the Aspide Table Lamp for Gubi in 1970 (its name comes from Aspis, an antiquity term for snake). Five decades later, Gubi has reissued the piece and its reptilian shape and mirrored, chrome finish continue to resonate with the aesthetic sensibilities of today. Sense & Sensibility

NODDING TO ENGLISH TRADITION WITH A MODERN SWERVE, TODAY’S KITCHENS REACH NEW HEIGHTS OF CHIC.

WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT AND SARAH SHELTON

Brass-toned details, including a Waterworks tap, Top Knobs hardware and an antique painting, lend traditional flair to this Massachusetts kitchen designed by Kristen Rivoli. A Wolf range and a leathered granite backsplash and countertop from Metropolitan Stone are the ultimate cook’s companions.

An image of a classic English kitchen torn from a magazine provided an exciting challenge for Massachusetts-based designer Kristen Rivoli, who in her own words, “typically designs more modern and transitional spaces.” The fact that her client was a serious chef with contemporaryleaning tastes made the brief an even more interesting puzzle to solve.

To bring together both aesthetics, Rivoli looked first to the millwork, teaming up with Kevin Cradock Builders on a cabinetry program that nods to Old World furniture with its inset style and hand-painted finish,

while touting modern flourishes like curved panel lines and glass upper cubbies. A standout feature is Rivoli’s custom-designed hutch, whose drawers enclose a drop-down device charging station, cat challs for the husbands’ sundries and everyday cutlery and dishware for meals at the adjacent breakfast nook. “We did a lot of research on early English kitchens and one constant was that there was always a standalone hutch,” notes Rivoli.

Ultimately, crafting a modern chefs kitchen in the tradition of an English country home allowed for the best of both

worlds. “My client’s initial inspiration brought about so many great details–from the exposed hinges, to the large, farmhouse-style sink, and all of the warm brass hardware,” notes the designer. “But the functionality of the space, and the lighting and sexy furniture, it’s all very modern,” she continues. Unified by a t imeless material envelope of ebonized mahogany and leathered granite, the space is equal parts style and function. “Walking into this kitchen is like putting on a beautiful gown,” reflects Rivoli. “It instantly changes how you feel.” kristenrivoli.com

The breakfast nook beckons with its Saarinen table and chairs illuminated by an Apparatus pendant (below). The family room-facing end of the kitchen island encloses pull-out Sub-Zero beverage refrigerators; a fixture from The Urban Electric Co. hangs above (left).

After collaborating on several swoon-worthy kitchens, interior designer Amanda Chando and kitchen designer Tanya Smith-Shiflett teamed up on a collection of furnitureinspired cabinetry in a tight, customizable edit of door styles and paint finishes. When a repeat client approached the duo to renovate the kitchen of their new Maryland vacation home, it procured the perfect opportunity to debut the collection, specifically, the Wren cabinet door panel painted Farrow & Ball’s After Hours.

But the knockout millwork—a tailored riff on traditional English cabinets—isn’t the only

talking point. Below, Chando and Smith-Shiflett share the material power players.

Walnut Wood. TSS: The slatted walnut hood cover was an early decision, and it definitely pushed the kitchen design in a more modern direction. It’s the perfect warm wood stain, which Amanda sample matched from an antique chair. The walnut pulls and interior cabinet drawers are another modern detail. They are just as beautiful and special inside as they are out.

Textured Tile. AC: We toyed with refinishing the floors but ultimately decided to go with

something totally different: a slip-resistant subway tile from Fireclay Tile in a herringbone pattern. The backsplash is a clé zellige chosen because it’s reflective and brings in light while also withstanding messes. (These clients are originally from Europe—they like to cook and entertain!)

It’s a popular style of tile, but here the idea was to have them be another layer of te xture, joining the wood, brick, brass and quartzite. And of course, there’s the great House of Hackney wallpaper to tie it all together. uniquekitchensandbaths.com; detailsanddesign.com

Hefty brass Armac Martin hardware pops against custom cabinetry and clé zellige tile. A Lostine stool ties in the walnut detailing throughout the kitchen. The double height cabinets enclose a full-service coffee station.

Architecture is the art of creating one’s ideal environment, and that often involves immense collaboration, creativity and customization. Enter, APPLETON PARTNERS LLP. “We take the client on a journey through the entire design process,” says Associate Principal Andrea Van den Eikhof. “We are always willing to look at options and change things—the thinking is that nothing is sacred. Our process is interactive.” She is joined in this perspective by Associate Susan Queen and Project Manager Jesiy Richards. Together, the trio leads the charge o n much of APPLETON’s day-to-day business, which may be daily but is anything but mundane. From working with a manufacturer to design the perfect tiles for a resort-worthy pool to restoring iconic George Washington Smith residences, APPLETON PARTNERS brings a sense of the extraordinary and exceptional to every project. A skim of its 40-year architectural library proves it.

Next Up

Project Manager Jesiy Richards shares her vision: “We are currently expanding our hospitality work. It allows us to bring the beauty we infuse into single-family residences to public spaces that can be enjoyed by even more people.”

WE FOLLOW TRADITIONS THAT HAVE LASTED HUNDREDS OF YEARS TO CREATE PLACES THAT ARE TIMELESS AND INSPIRING.”

Iconic Inspirations

Associate Susan Queen shares a few sources of collective awe at APPLETON.

• We are inspired by women like Julia Morgan, Denise Scott Brown and Ray Eames, all trailblazing architects who raised the bar and paved the way despite enormous opposition.

• Re sources we enjoy are Radical Candor, the book and philosophy championed by Kim Scott, as well as podcasts The Business of Architecture and Wisdom From the Top.

• Ea ch year, we attend the AIA LA Women in Architecture’s Powerful Conference, and it is immensely influential to know that all of the women there are in the architectural field—it cultivates a sense of community.

Having wide-ranging inspiration and a global perspective brings strength of skills to one’s field—and that’s particularly true in the world of design. Janice Barta, Founder and Principal of Barta Interiors, has many influences. After growing up on the east coast and earning degrees from the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Parsons School of Design, she worked for high-end architecture firms in Milan and NYC. At both firms Barta learned the spirit of collaboration and gained exposure to the world of luxury interiors. She notes, “Their attention to detail taught me to always work at the highest of standards.” Today, more than a decade after founding Los Angeles-based Barta Interiors, the firm has built a reputation for creating refined spaces that are deeply connected to each client’s interests. Ask any designer to describe a typical workday, and their response very well may be, “Is there such a thing?” This is precisely how Meredith Gullion, Senior Designer at Cooper Pacific Kitchens, responds. “The variety of tasks in every day is one part of what makes this industry exciting,” she shares. “We might be designing in AutoCAD, reviewing material boards, producing contracts or walking a site.” Indeed, as one of the experts providing the full-service experience for which Cooper Pacific is known and loved, Gullion spends her days tackling the many intricacies of custom cabinetry design and project planning that go into a kitchen. “We pay attention not only to the aesthetics, but to in-depth practical details,” she says. “Our achievement of function meets form is what sets us apart in the industry.” That legacy has been partially built by Gullion herself, who has worked with the Cooper family for several decades. Timeless Teachings

“I was fortunate to have a wonderful mentor at FIDM in Los Angeles, who possessed a vast knowledge of interior design, art and furniture history,” Gullion says. “They cultivated a deeper yearning to learn, and to this day, I find myself referencing their advice and insights. Social media is currently having a moment around the idea that if you put something red in a room, it works. That was something I learned from this mentor 20 years ago!”

A CABINET HINGE MAY NOT SEEM SEXY, BUT I HAVE AN INSATIABLE CURIOSITY FOR DETAILS.”

Up + Coming

While on the subject of her career goals, Gullion enthuses about the near future of Cooper Pacific. “We are thrilled to announce that we are opening a new flagship location in the blue building at the Pacific Design Center. We’ve been in the center for 30 years, but this innovative new space will be a game changer. Additionally, with the appointment of Steven Cooper as the Creative Director of Cabbonet Los Angeles and our expansion into Big Sky, Montana, these are truly exciting times for our team.”

A Designer’s Dossier

• What motivates and energizes you? Genuine human connection.

Firstly, with my team. They are the engine that drives my company and having the opportunity to work with these inspiring women gets me out of bed each day.

Secondly, my clients. Their lives and stories are the fuel that propels us forward. When we truly connect with our clients, we’re at the epicenter of our inspiration and energy.

• Who is your female design icon? I am charmed by Olga Polizzi. Her reign at Rocco Forte has resulted in some of my favorite hotels in the world, including Hotel Savoy in Florence and Brown’s Hotel in London. And her personal style is a love letter to the architecture of the buildings she buys, which she then infuses with the perfect blend of whimsy, warmth and antiques.

• Talk about mentors who shaped and inspired you? Aside from my mother, who is my foremost and forever icon, there was Cheryl Sterling. When I began working at Polo Fashions/Ralph Lauren, Cheryl was one of a few top woman executives and my first professional mentor. She had amazing style, was admirably strong and gentle and, above all, considerate with whomever she was working. I idolized her.

Living For Design

“My unwavering love for design, passion for rich, distinctive materials and belief that every object should be considered for its unique beauty and utility is inherent to my being. My entry into the design industry began with highly regarded couture fashion houses, which helped formalize my long-felt belief that there is more to beauty than what is seen with the eyes. • Did you always want to work in the design industry? My family has always been involved in design. It is a rare individual who proves gifted in both left and right-brain pursuits, and even more unusual is the person who achieves high levels of success in professions of each. Enter, Lorena Pulichino, who was three years into med school when she realized her heart wasn’t in it. “I come from two generations of builders, so I grew up surrounded by the creation of home,” she shares. “I decided to change paths and pursue interior architecture. I thought my parents would disapprove, but my father threw his hands up and said, ‘Finally!’ I’ve always loved design, and he knew it was the right place for me.” Indeed, the success of her firm, Lorena Pulichino Design, is a testament to his foresight. Known for personalized spaces that reflect their owners’ dreams, Pulichino and team are beloved for their timeless and elegant, yet always unique creations. Their measured approach is much appreciated too. “We can draw, and we draw everything in detail.”

Tuning In

Asked to share her recommendations for thought-provoking content, Pulichino notes that podcasts are her bread and butter. She offers up her top five:

• Design Matters with Debbie Millman delves into the creative processes of designers, artists and innovators—it is fantastic.

• While not exclusively focused on design, HBR IdeaCast is great for leadership topics and advice.

• The Tara Brach podcast is a valuable resource for anyone interested in mindfulness, meditation and personal development.

• A Well-Designed Business provides practical guidance and inspiration for interior designers at all stages of their careers.

“I believe I am crafting the foundation of how my clients will interact with and enjoy their homes every day,” Pulichino shares. “This is why I find their input so important at every stage, but especially in the beginning. It’s my job to make sure colors, textures and styles tell the emotional story of the house, and we work hard to ensure that each design matches who the client is, in a core way.”

The Luxury Kitchen

When an individual is immensely passionate about their craft, a craving for expansion and specialization often calls. Take Sherry Gvili as an example. After spending 23 years as a territory manager for Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove in Southern California, she recognized the need for Los Angeles designers, architects and homeowners to have a more local environment for exploring appliances. In 2022, that vision became reality with the opening of The Luxury Kitchen. “We are a premier showroom on the Westside, showcasing the best-in-class luxury brands and fostering a sense of community within the design industry,” Gvili says. “To facilitate meaningful connections, we have initiated monthly happy hours, offering a friendly and welcoming space for professionals to gather, experience our products and engage authentically.” Alongside these signature experiences, The Luxury Kitchen has quickly become beloved for its impressive live kitchen.

Inspo From Every Corner

Gvili finds ample motivation from exploring the content of thought leaders and fellow design industry pros. She shares a few key sources of inspiration.

• Bob Riggs, the former president of Riggs Distributing in Southern California, is a one-of-a-kind legend who taught me the paramount importance of genuine human connection within this business.

• On Instagram, I find influence from the top minds in the trade, including @ryansaghian, @kellywearstler, @adamhunter, @brigetteromanek and @natashabaradaran.

• Both Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg and 10x Is Easier Than 2x: How World-Class Entrepreneurs Achieve More by Doing Less by Dr. Benjamin Hardy and Dan Sullivan are books that had a profound impact on me.

• What major goals do you have for the future? To keep bringing the elements of art, design and community to an ever-expanding audience, and to continue to be a hub for celebrating what matters most: where we live, how we live and embracing the artistic endeavors that resonate most deeply with us.

• What does the future hold for women in art and design? I see women in the contemporary art scene gaining traction as more galleries pay attention to their art and the role we play in the creative sphere.

Creative Inspiration

“When I took my first painting class, I realized I’d just discovered a whole new language for expressing the inexpressible,” Mashian shares. “That was a truly pivotal moment for me and the reason why I’ve never put my brush down over the past 30 years. Creating a painting requires tapping into all of my skills and senses. Intuition, knowledge of the craft and understanding how elements of design—such as scale, composition and color theory—have to merge artistically in order to bring about a piece of artwork that speaks to the soul.”

It is always fascinating to hear career origin stories, and this is especially true when one is at the top of one’s field—add to that a family legacy, and a novel-worthy tale begins to form. Such is the feeling evoked by the background of Magdalena Glen-Schieneman, AIA, who today acts as Principal Architect at her firm, MGS Architecture. “I am a licensed architect in California, a member of AIA and the Association for Women in Architecture + Design, and I come from a family of architects living in the Carpathian Mountains of Central Europe,” she shares. After earning her master’s degree in architecture and engineering at Cracow University of Technology, Faculty of Architecture in Poland, she founded MGS in Los Angeles, where she now lives with her hu sband and three children. The rest is a history of successful projects and happy clients, site-responsive designs and solution-oriented architecture. MGS

Looking Forward

Asked to share her goals for MGS, Glen-Schieneman gives a profound response. “I know the challenges facing our civilization are immense. Climate change, population growth and diminishing natural resources will shape how we view and manage our built and natural environments. Urban planning, architecture and landscape architecture will need to become more integrated in order to effectively address our challenges. Interdisciplinary teams in our industries will need to collaborate and, with the help of information-driven design, deliver better and less expensive solutions without increased environmental impact. This is our ongoing, overarching goal.”

Variety Is The Spice

In Glen-Schieneman’s world, no two days are ever the same— an d that’s how she likes it. “Just yesterday at our office, we tackled a design for a high-end watch store on Rodeo Drive, met with a couple to advance their remodel/addition in Culver City, talked to a group of owners about progress on our design of an oculus and mural at their spa in Santa Monica and at the end of the day, I was able to put a few sketches on paper for my pet project: a line of tents for urban families.”

In general, women often have a reputation for seemingly doing it all. In the design world, countless female entrepreneurs and visionaries drive this point home, running businesses, being creative and managing their personal lives all at once. In the case of mother-and-daughter duo Nancy and Shanesa Fath, this is evident not only in their daily work ethic, but the multiplicity of their business itself. “From design-build projects, kitchen and bath renovations and interior design services to an in-house shop for custom upholstery and wood furniture and the curation of fine art and photography, we offer a comprehensive experience,” Nancy shares. Indeed, via three sister firms—Studio CT, Chandeliers + Tulips and Cobblestone & Vines Custom Designs— the dynamic pair provides almost every imaginable service for home to their clients. Shanesa enthuses, “At the heart of it all is our belief that creativity and kindness are essential to life.”

Vacation Meets Boutique

“We are thrilled to be launching our CT Mountain House, which will be a shoppable Airbnb,” Nancy shares. “Every item within this unique space will be available for purchase online, offering visitors the opportunity to seamlessly transition from living as they browse to buying.”

THIS PROFESSION ISN’T JUST A JOB. IT’S OUR PASSION AND PURPOSE— OUR ‘RIDE OR DIE.’”

A Storied Start

The path to design was a family affair for the Faths. “I have long been drawn to design, art and photography,” Nancy says. “Yet, as I watched my daughter grow, I realized my deepest aspiration wasn’t for myself, but for her. I longed for Shanesa to pursue her passions and find her own way, free from my influence. Imagine my delight when, upon her graduation from UCLA, she turned to me and said, ‘This is what I want too.’ It is an incredible legacy to pass down.” Shanesa jumps in, “My biggest inspiration and mentor is truly my mom. She has always instilled in me a confidence and willingness to work hard while cultivating my creativity. She is my best friend, business partner and soulmate.”

Occasionally, someone is so undeniably talented that they fall into their career via the insistence of others. Such is the case for Grania Murray, who founded her firm after a publisher in Ireland saw photographs of her personal home and encouraged her to work as a designer. “I took their advice after my work was featured in their magazine and the inquiries started pouring in,” Murray shares. The rest is a 25-year history of awe-inspiring design endeavors, happy clients and a move to the U.S. Today, Murray and her team at Studio Grania Murray operate out of Los Angeles, although they complete projects throughout the world. Murray has always respected the sustainable approach and was one of the first groups of designers to complete Regreen training with the ASID.

Legacy Projects

“I renovated the 250-year-old cellar bar in a five-star Dublin hotel, The Merrion, a few years ago,” Murray shares. “My vision for the project was to exclusively use an Irish team of creatives and craftspeople to provide custom work for the space. The President of Ireland even contributed with poetry that is showcased as a design element! The icing on the cake was scooping up an International Design Hospitality Award. This isn’t the only project in my hometown that I count among my top achievements. I also designed a post-production studio, called Post 22, for Pierce Brosnan in the heart of the city. It was at the beginning of my career, so it certainly felt like a big deal. In fact, it still does now!”

A comprehensive skill set, collaborative spirit and holistic approach to design are the keys to creating exceptional homes and environments. And so it is with May Sung. As Principal at SUBU Design Architecture, she’s been applying her unique sense of style, flair for function, academic expertise and client-centric philosophy to her widely celebrated, Los Angeles-based firm and the award-winning portfolio of projects they’ve amassed since 2011. “As a Fulbright Scholar, my study in housing cemented my belief that a home should reflect the personalities of the individuals who live there and serve as a retreat from the pressures of their daily lives,” Sung says. “Having been trained in both architecture and interior design, I am able to integrate both disciplines and deliver spaces that not only speak to my clients’ wants, needs and visions, but create a lasting impression that inspires others.”

Design For Living

• Did you always want a career in design?

There were two pivotal moments from my childhood that propelled me toward the design field. The first was accompanying my grandfather to the jobsite that would become our family home, and the other was helping my mother pick out furnishing and decorations. These experiences initiated my love for building and creating homes.

• What motivates and energizes you?

Knowing that every day I get to be creative, and that there is always something new and challenging just around the corner.

• Who is your ultimate female icon? Zaha Hadid. I was fortunate to have been at Harvard GSD when she was a guest lecturer there, and I then had the unique opportunity to spend some personal time with her in Hong Kong. Viola Gardens Design

Some of the world’s greatest leaders got their start at the bottom rung of their industry and worked their way up. It makes for an expert who truly grasps every element of their profession. Enter, Jessica Viola. Upon graduating from Ithaca College with a degree in music and theater, she found herself craving a departure from NYC, where she’d been raised. “Enamored by the beauty of California and not wanting to work at a desk, I walked down to the native plant nursery after moving there,” she shares. “I couldn’t answer any of their questions about horticulture or ecology, but I formed a personal connection with the manager and when he ended up leaving shortly after, I got the job.” Now, 25 years later, she is the Founder, Principal and Lead Designer of Viola Gardens Design, which specializes in crafting landscapes that seamlessly blend drought tolerance, ecological sustainability and artistic inspiration.

New Benchmarks

“I’m proud to run a female-led ecological landscape contracting and design firm, to push gender expectations and partner with so many incredible women along the way. So much of a woman’s work goes unspoken, unnoticed. I built this business primarily as a single mom, so I know the struggle of pursuing a career with passion while raising a child. For this reason, I have always engaged a holistic approach to not only the work, but the business model. There are many pressures, assumptions and discriminations that are put on women, particularly in construction. This inspires me to be part of a new paradigm and solution as it relates to the work of women and especially those in construction.”

Support + Symposium

Alongside the many breathtaking projects the Viola Gardens team has been undertaking, the brand recently expanded to include The Art & Ecology Studio. “This collaborative space is designed to promote personal growth and community resilience and cultivate better relationships between people and the world around us,” Viola says. “We’ll have educational programming, open-air gatherings, demonstration gardens and more. Keep an eye on theartandecologystudio.com for all the details!”

Desert DREAMS

On a hill above Rancho Mirage, a couple’s reimagined retreat pays homage to the tones and textures of the Coachella Valley.

LUXESOURCE.COM
Architecture: Javier Segura Villagran, Javier Segura Design, Inc. Interior Design: Tim Pfeiffer, Hoedemaker Pfeiffer Home Builder: Jorge Garcia, Garsep Construction Inc. Landscape Architecture: Jeff Attinger, Attinger Landscape Architecture To shape the living area’s muted palette, designer Tim Pfeiffer placed a coffee table and sofas from EJ Victor’s Antonia Collection beside ED Ellen DeGeneres lounge chairs, which are wearing a Mark Alexander linen. All were sourced from Housewright. An RH chandelier finishes the room.

Achance meetup at a cocktail party is what kicked off the total transformation of this 1960s dwelling. The woman, who would quickly become Tim Pfeiffer’s client, had been following his work—and she didn’t mince her words. “I’ve been wanting to track you down; I need your help,” the interior designer recalls of her opening line. She and her husband had purchased a spectacular Rancho Mirage hillside site. The older home perched upon it, however, begged for a refresh to maximize its Coachella Valley views. What the southwest-facing residence boasted most was privacy: Surrounded on two sides by a mountain and canyon, it had no visible neighboring homes. The couple had already engaged residential designer Javier Segura Villagran, who had begun ideating on how to best transform the abode’s layout with more connectivity to its stunning surroundings. With Pfeiffer on board, they further considered the particularities of the property to dictate all architectural and interior design responses. “The existing floor plan didn’t work well for a contemporary lifestyle,” remarks Segura Villagran, “but we felt that the shell and orientation did—if we flipped the programming around.”

The eat-in kitchen was relocated (it now opens to a patio and outdoor kitchen), the common areas redone, and an attached casita with a kitchenette and two commodious bedroom suites was added. Pfeiffer notes that his client also requested “four perfect chairs in four different places” to support her husband’s voracious reading habit. Composing seamless indoor-outdoor living spaces was a must too, as was hewing to the best sight lines. “We created a nice dichotomy of down-valley and mountain views, with the shadow play and drama of the mountain coming into the property,” Segura Villagran notes.

For the entrance, reimagined in collaboration with landscape architect Jeff Attinger and installed by Dunn’s Desert Landscape & Designer Pools, the team “wanted to create a sheltered and layered experience,” Pfeiffer explains. “The water

features add brightness and reflectivity, and really amp up the romantic feeling of an oasis in the desert.” The attractive array of plant choices surrounding the two rectangular reflecting ponds create what Attinger describes as “a statuesque enhanced desert vignette,” with an organ pipe cactus, yucca, agaves and golden barrel cactuses referencing the environs.

Aesthetically, the wife asked Pfeiffer to draw inspiration from that same immediate context, but without going too literal. “She said, ‘Let’s pay attention to the seasons and the continual changing light on the mountains and the hills, and let’s play with that color palette,’ ” he explains, quipping, “She won me over before we’d even started.” Because the client herself is a painter and had previously worked in interior design, she had “a real sense of color and was into some gutsy materials,” Pfeiffer further shares. He took his cues from the range of plant life and golden rock formations he observed, mixing them with rich cocoa, dusty gray and dark bronze—hues that nod to the mountainside’s dappled shadows.

Wood surfaces bring in warmth and help manage the scale of the generously sized rooms. Box beams and the cast-concrete and bronze fireplace in the living room align with the exterior approach and entryway, accentuating the geometric principles incorporated throughout. “There’s this nice balance of a contemporary focus done in a more traditional way,” the designer muses. “This home’s classic components are overscaled and expansive to connect to the grandeur of the setting.” And as Segura Villagran notes of the residence’s range of design references, “Tim’s vernacular is modern Pacific Northwest, mine is modern Palm Springs. This home is a nice marriage of both.”

Looking back, that serendipitous encounter at the party wasn’t just breezy banter. It was the start of a collaborative relationship that reinforces Pfeiffer’s design ethos. “There’s a narrative and a story to tell for everyone,” he reflects. “Some people want to be delivered a story; this client loved to help build the story, which made it all the more fun to work together.”

A World of Its Own

In Pacific Palisades, a grand historic house becomes a happy oasis for a young family.

L U X E S O U R C E C O M
WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA ROMEREIN Architecture: Steve Giannetti, Giannetti Home Interior Design: Brooke Giannetti, Giannetti Home Home Builder: Brian Valle, Valle Reinis Builders Landscape Architecture: Stephen Block, Inner Gardens Clipped boxwood and climbing jasmine, part of a layered landscape design by Stephen Block, play up this Pacific Palisades home’s Tudor Revival architecture and frame the dining room. French doors usher in light and air.

This is no traditional Tudor; they wanted something fresh,” declares designer Brooke Giannetti of the historic 1920s home on a large estate in Pacific Palisades that was purchased by her longtime clients. Their plan? To enliven it with contemporary interiors. The house had been extensively remodeled by its previous owners, “but in a traditional way, and we kept certain aspects,” explains architect Steve Giannetti, Brooke’s husband and design partner. As their clients are a young couple with children, the Giannettis leaned into finding a balance, inside and out, that would work with the home’s traditional backdrop yet feel modern and “formal without being formal,” notes Brooke. “There’s softness, lightness, fun,” she adds. “We wanted this home to encompass all the things we love to do: allow connections between the indoors and out; utilize beautiful natural materials; and be filled with rooms designed to create emotion.”

Steve largely opted to preserve the home’s architectural integrity, but it did require some strategic interventions to fit the lifestyle of its new owners. “Steve can imagine things that are contemporary, how a vignette will look or where to place a door,” says the husband of the architect’s methodology. To wit, widening the entrance between the entry hall and dining room helped the dining area seem less formal and more like an inviting destination. And the French doors on three sides of the sunlit space “make it feel like a garden pavilion,” notes the architect.

The Giannettis left the kitchen nearly untouched, swapping in checkerboard flooring (“It adds a nice character,” Steve observes) and a new sage-green range and hood. They also, with the help of general contractor Brian Valle, spent time reconfiguring the private upstairs spaces to better fit the family’s lifestyle. Together, they shifted the layout of the primary suite’s bathrooms, increased closet space for the wife and created a study for the husband. “We don’t always do things in a ‘normal’ way,” shares Brooke of how she and Steve collaborate, “but Brian has a massive amount of technical skill and can always achieve what we design.”

For the interiors, Brooke and project designer Laura Putnam worked closely with the wife to create rooms with a modern aesthetic. And Brooke and Steve’s son, Nick Giannetti, also contributed by sourcing accessories throughout the home. “There’s

a joy and levity to these homeowners, and you can see that in our selections,” Brooke continues. Working in pinks, oranges and greens (“They’re unexpected, energized!” she enthuses), the designer focused on creating a sense of lightness through curves and textures. “We wanted different feelings in different areas, but there’s a balanced mix of things, not just pieces that would have matched the English exterior,” she explains. The living room’s swoopy French sofas and vintage Italian floor light are a case in point. There are clever tricks too, like the way the couple’s cashmere-wrapped headboard references wainscotting. “There needs to be a connection to history of place, but also to a client’s story, past and future,” muses Brooke.

But it’s the vaulted playroom that truly expresses this family’s cheerful togetherness. While the coffee table is perfect for Legos, the onyx tequila bar is ideal for adults. “I love this room,” says the wife. “It’s warm and comfortable, and everything is so bold: the red sofa, the checkered rug, the oversize lighting fixtures.” It also has one of the couple’s favorite artworks, a painting by André Butzer.

“We began collecting years ago, but a friend recently introduced us to art adviser Cardiff Dugan Loy, who has helped build our collection. She showed us Butzer’s work and we couldn’t stop thinking about that piece,” the wife continues. “It completes the room in the most whimsical and memorable way.”

The home’s buoyant spirit continues outside, in the landscape designed by Stephen Block. “The garden had great bones—100-year-old cedars—but sometimes my inspiration comes from objects,” explains Block, pointing to an antique French fountain that drove the design. He brought in tidy clipped boxwood, fragrant jasmine, oakleaf hydrangeas, redbuds, citrus and vegetable gardens, alongside birdbaths. “The end result is a really pretty green-on-green-on-green,” says Block. Special, personalized moments are peppered in too. For instance, when the wife mentioned her love of chickens, the landscape designer replied, “I have one!” That is, he brought in a large French planter in the form of her favorite fowl. “It’s now perched where I can see it through the kitchen window as I cook,” says the wife.

“We all understood that this family wanted moments of surprise and charm—a happy home,” Brooke reflects. To which Steve adds, “And we respected the dignity of this great old house, while still filling it with personal style and making it their house.”

Body & Soul

With a fresh take on figurative art, Los Angeles painter and sculptor America Martin captures the human spirit with flair.

LUXESOURCE.COM

The body is rich terrain for America Martin. Every gesture, movement and expression is akin to “a landscape that is forever changing” in the eyes of the native Angeleno. She excavates each nuance for her paintings and sculptures, mining newfound wonder from the oldest of muses.

Martin’s fascination with figurative art blossomed from a childhood discovery of Vincent van Gogh’s portraiture work in an art book. “I felt like I was reading a language I could understand, one that I wanted to start speaking immediately,” she recalls. This passion led her to start taking life-drawing classes at 10 years old.

Now, Martin has shaped her own corporeal lexicon. In her paintings, bodies emerge from pools of color, bordered by sinuous lines “that are the bass drum of my art,” she explains. “They make a figure feel light or heavy, or convey pride or waifishness.” Her sculptures follow a similar expression, with flat planes of metal and stone contoured around negative space.

Martin’s subjects reveal the anthropological curiosity that underscores her work. One piece may evoke ancient monolithic Mayan sculptures, Greek mythical gods or Colombian indigenous art (nodding to her own Colombian roots). In another, she might cheekily reimagine an English medieval tapestry or 19th-century paintings by Édouard Manet or Paul Gauguin. Other figures, like those of mother and child, transcend time and place.

In her studio, a 10,000-square-foot former drapery warehouse illuminated by skylights, Martin works on a large scale, flitting between massive paintings in progress. Compositions develop from sketches, whether derived from live model sessions or pure flights of fancy, “on those days when I just want to paint a woman that looks like a mountain,” quips the artist.

She utilizes both acrylic and nontoxic house paint, which allows for generous applications. “I like how oils and acrylics fight on the surface; they crack and drip,” she notes. Throughout the process, she’ll trade big brushes with oil sticks to create thinner lines. Each piece feels finished “when there’s a match between spirit and form—that’s when they hum,” she says.

Recent motherhood has only deepened Martin’s awe of the human figure. “Having a child is like seeing a Leonardo da Vinci architectural drawing,” she reflects. “Perfect. Brilliant. The best thing you’ll ever make. But, as an artist, I’m still hungry to create new work.”

ELEVATE EVERYTHING

Artfully reimagined with layers of warmth and texture, a remodeled

residence becomes a sophisticated space with a stunning level of detail.

Corona del Mar
L U X E S O U R C E C O M
WRITTEN BY LAURA FENTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LANCE GERBER Interior Design: Denise Morrison, Marina Morrison and Rachel Morrison, Morrison Interiors Home Builder: George Deverian, Geo Builders, Inc. Visible from the great room, a vibrant Marco Lorenzetto painting hangs in a hallway that connects to the owners’ and children’s bedrooms. A striking, sculptural trio of custom floor-to-ceiling lights with a brushed-brass finish fills a corner.

efore its renovation, a 180-degree ocean view was the undisputed star of this Corona del Mar dwelling. Today, it’s a toss-up between what first catches the eye as you step through the dramatic pivot door. Perhaps it’s the glamorous dining space at the left, topped with a jewelry-like three-tier chandelier. Or it may be the high-contrast kitchen at the right, rich with gold-veined marble and sleek brass accents. And then there’s the inviting, layered living area that lies straight ahead and (still) fronts an impressive sight line out to the Pacific.

That seaside proximity and the home’s open, family-friendly layout by architect Mark Teale are what drew the owners to this residence, which was built just under a decade ago. The interiors, however, were very much a tabula rasa. “There were a lot of shiny white plaster walls,” remembers the homeowner. “I love a modern aesthetic, but it was too cold.” Enter interior designers

Rachel Morrison and Marina Morrison, who, in collaboration with principal designer Denise Morrison, shared their client’s assessment of the space. “There were glammy surfaces and excessive recessed lighting that did not feel intentionally placed; overall, the interior finishes just didn’t match the location and atmosphere of the home,” Rachel explains. Happily, she adds, their stylish and collaborative client was on board for a total reimagining. For this tech executive who, with her husband and teenage sons, had recently returned to Southern California after a stint in the Bay Area, the design trio were determined to conceive a home that would reflect her taste and personality. As they dived into the project, the brief became clear: Elevate everything

The homeowner credits Denise for clarifying her vision during their initial meetings. “I could never have articulated it, but while looking at some photos of interiors that I liked, Denise immediately said, ‘You love contrast.’ ” And the interior design team zeroed in on their client’s love of warm, organic modernism—a look beloved by their firm—infused with moments of glamour. “We aligned really well stylistically,” says Marina. Working with general contractor George Deverian, their plan called for transforming nearly every surface in the house. In came new floors, replastered walls, custom cabinetry,

luxurious stonework and statement lighting. Rachel and Marina also introduced rift-sawn white oak paneling to some of the ceilings to add much-needed warmth. Another subtle but significant change? Cleaning up the ceiling planes and removing awkward soffits. To eliminate the bump outs on either fireplace, Deverian creatively rerouted some of the HVAC systems, which, Marina notes, “made all of the difference.”

Two other key priorities of the renovation were the spaces geared towards entertaining: the kitchen and a bar area on the home’s lower level. For the former, which their client envisioned as a showstopper, the designers leaned into her taste for contrast, pairing ebonized-oak cabinetry with swaths of gold-veined marble on the counters, backsplash and open shelving, and on the large island. “The glamour comes in from those metallic accents, the lighting and the hood, but the materials themselves are earthy and the wood finishes are warm,” explains Rachel. “There’s a push-pull balance between an organic modern feel and those touches of glam, which fits the vibe she was going for.” As for the existing bar space downstairs, it was enlarged and reworked to display the husband’s extensive tequila collection, complete with an elegant area suited for tastings.

The designers also created a new lighting scheme, which included thoughtfully rearranging and reducing the preexisting recessed lights. But more importantly, they filled the home with artistic, architectural fixtures. “Lighting as art really spoke to me,” the homeowner shares. The sculptural bespoke lights of the great room extending from floor to ceiling in one corner are an especially spectacular example. Furnishings, in turn, skew warm and textured, with a neutral palette accented with terra cotta, deep blues and dark greens. “There aren’t a ton of patterns; instead, textural changes make the furnishings lean more contemporary,” Marina points out.

T he homeowner and her family love the results, but she admits that what surprised her the most was how much she enjoyed the design journey. “People talk about remodeling projects being a pain, but this process went so much better than I could have imagined,” she reflects. Happily, the feeling was mutual: “It’s just so much fun to design for someone who offered us a lot of creative freedom,” says Rachel with satisfaction. “She really trusted our vision and felt that we could execute it.”

Agoura Sash & Door

At a time when everything from working and entertaining to enjoying a staycation with family is done from home, the desire to design a bespoke dream home is compelling. Whether for a remodel or ground-up new build, homeowners are seeking a level of personalization that demands creativity and optimization—and this is especially relevant in the conversation around indoor-outdoor living. Enter, Agoura Sash & Door. “We offer the windows, doors, hardware and building materials that homeowners and design pros are seeking to create indoor-outdoor flow,” says Dan Smith, the company’s President. “Our customers want the option to open their homes to the outside. Bifolding doors, pocketing systems, narrow trims for larger view corridors—it’s all trending.” Offering more natural light, picturesque vistas and flow from indoors to out, these concepts are reigning in the renovation world.

Step One To Success

Anyone who has ever taken on a reno knows that the team in place can make or break the project. The experts at Agoura agree, and that’s why they recommend choosing wisely. “We advise that clients hire a reputable contractor and/or builder,” Smith says. “There are a lways surprises along the way, and a skilled contractor or builder can help plan and mitigate mistakes or issues. In addition, good planning with products chosen early in the cycle means that installation can happen right away when that stage of the project has been reached.”

Capable Of Custom

Asked to share the value Agoura brings to its customers, Smith points to the nearly endless options a dedicated purveyor can make available. “Those versed in any field will have access to materials, products, machinery and tools that open up new possibilities,” he says. “This is how the big dreams—especially those with unique features— become reality.”

Some people discover their passion for outstanding design and craftsmanship on life’s journey, while others are born with it. Thus is the case with Saeid Arsin. The Owner of Arsin Rug Gallery, Saeid is the third-generation scion of the Arsin family—rug experts who started out in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar in 1910. Today, he oversees the legacy firm’s international business as well as their showrooms in Dallas, Houston and at the Pacific Design Center in L.A. “Showcasing an ever-changing inventory of over 15,000 rugs and carpets, our Los Angeles gallery features a stunning selection of Persian, Turkish, Oriental and European designs,” Saeid says. “In addition to our impressive collection of antique, reproduction, traditional, transitional and modern-style rugs and carpets, Arsin Rug Gallery can also create custom designs that bring a unique sense of beauty and artistry to any home or environment.”

Crafting A Legacy

• What is your firm’s mission?

To travel the world in search of the finest rugs and carpets that will transform our clients’ homes into havens of timeless elegance.

• Share some of your most popular client requests.

Natural fibers—like wool and silk—are in high demand, while neutral tones—such as beige and gray—and geometric patterns and vintage motifs are at the forefront of today’s color and pattern trends.

• And what are some of the most unique client requests?

Homeowners seeking rugs that celebrate specific cultural or artistic themes, or that showcase unique heritage or personal narratives.

• Talk about a project that exemplified your expertise. In 2021, we worked alongside renowned designers Ken Fulk and Liz MacPhail to provide the perfect rugs for their designs at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House.

• Is there anything else you’d like to share?

In addition to our extensive range of rugs, we also offer wall-to-wall and office carpeting crafted from premium materials such as sisal, jute and seagrass. At Arsin Rug Gallery, we are constantly expanding and evolving to meet the ever-changing needs of our discerning clientele.

Whether as part of a gut renovation, one-off update or groundup new build, the architectural products of a home can have an immense visual and functional influence. This is precisely why the family-owned and operated Superior Moulding takes pride in every piece they provide. “We have been working out of the San Fernando Valley for more than three decades, and our vision has never wavered: to offer customers unparalleled expertise, exceptional customer service and top-tier architectural products,” Owner Ryan Kalman shares. “From the materials we source to the craftsmanship we employ, we prioritize excellence in every product offered.” Indeed, talk to any of the architects, contractors, interior designers or homeowners who have repeatedly worked with Superior Moulding, and they will likely point to the high quality of every item and commitment evident in every interaction.

Well-Loved Look

Who better to identify what’s in favor than those working with industry pros and homeowners every day? Kalman speaks to one of the top favorites of the moment: “Floor-to-ceiling windows with black frames are a popular choice for those seeking to create contemporary, light-filled spaces with a bold architectural statement. When implementing these, it’s essential to consider factors such an energy efficiency, privacy and structural integrity. High-quality glazing, thermal insulation and proper installation techniques can help optimize performance and functionality.”

WE REMAIN STEADFAST IN OUR AIM TO INNOVATE, ADAPT, EVOLVE AND ALWAYS MEET THE CHANGING NEEDS OF OUR CUSTOMERS AND INDUSTRY.”

Tips For Stress-Free Reno

For Kalman and team, two pieces of advice win out above all others when it comes to homeowners living through a renovation.

• Find a good, experienced contractor early on. Having this knowledgeable resource at the ready makes the entire process easier.

• Order your products well in advance, because tight lead times can add stress and interfere with other elements of a project.
