#STOP THE 100 BILLION It is estimated that as many as 100 billion coffee single-use cups are being thrown away each year. But a local brand challenges South Africa’s contribution to the waste epidemic with a unique range of reusable and recyclable take away cups that happen to be incredibly stylish. In the words of Joris van Grieken, Marketing Director at Ecoffee Cup, “It's a big problem needing a big and beautiful solution; the cup stops here.” Within less than two decades humans have become a "plastic" society – with something like 90% of all plastic created being used for single-use items. Van Grieken says, "In 2015, when we read that half a trillion single use cups get manufactured each year (and that most of these end up as landfill) – we felt that what society was doing was creating more harm than good. So we set out to make some change; not revolutionary but somehow contributory to social good. We certainly never set out to be eco-warriors, but once you become aware of the unsustainability of single-use items, you realise that everyone needs to change. And therefore we created a product that is environmentally very strong and beautifully designed."

Created with the world’s fastest growing, most sustainable crop – naturally organic, bamboo fibre and nonGMO corn starch, Ecoffee Cup is BPA and phthalate free a tactile experience similar to thick, yet light cardboard. Fast growing, quickly renewable and highly

sustainable, bamboo is a naturally organic crop that uses no pesticides in its farming. Bamboo is also naturally sterile, preventing flavour taint and, unlike plastic, it contains no petrochemicals and is biodegradable at the end of its lifecycle. The material is also super light – just 135g – and it has a fullyresealable ‘drip-proof’ lid making it perfect to take with you everywhere you go. The cup itself is dishwasher safe and should last for years - if you treat it nicely of course. Explains founder and head designer, David McKlagan, "Our design philosophy is a simple one: Have Fun. Do Good. We think there should be an Ecoffee Cup for everyone. Every time you use your Ecoffee Cup you're helping make a tiny dent in the 100 billion single-use coffee cups that go to landfill each year!“ And while a reusable cup may seem like a drop in the ocean to some, one only has to look at Woolworths who, according to their website, has made a significant dent in the sale of reusable bags with over 920 000 bags sold. If one retailer can make that possible for bags, what may be possible for coffee cups? The product launched in August 2016 and is available in 14 designs and in 400ml and 340ml sizes. Teaming up with luxury brand Kingsley Heath on a fashion editorial was a definite highlight for us. Initially slightly nervy about dealing with anticipated diva behaviour from models and stylists, the fashion shoot was fantastically fun, with a relaxed, down to earth team and models from Kingsley Heath who made the experience memorable for all the right reasons! A big thank you to Dunkirk Estate for allowing us access to shoot in their coastal forest area and even though the weather literally tried to rain on our parade, the shoot was a great success. EXCITING TIMES Growth is never by mere chance, it is the result of forces working together.” James Cash Penney

W

e live in exciting times for the North Coast of KwaZulu Natal. With major investments and large projects underway within the portion of the coastal corridor covered by the LUXE magazine, it should clearly be referred to as the “Golden Corridor". With its strategic location, the Golden Corridor is not only attracting major projects in infrastructure upgrades, new residential gated estate developments, commercial and industrial projects, but also major investments in tourism. The blistering pace at which the Golden Corridor is developing and is becoming the new hot spot for investment is due to a number of factors, some of which are the relocation of the King Shaka International Airport, the position between the two major ports of Durban and Richards Bay and the development of iDube Trade Port, the decentralization of business nodes coupled with the construction of new hospitals, schools, shopping malls, major upgrades to roads and infrastructure and new up-market secure gated housing estates which have together triggered a migration of families from other areas. Incredibly, only 15 years ago, the shopping in the Ballito area, for example, was limited to a couple of small market centres catering mainly to holiday makers. These included the Ballito Village Centre on Compensation Road and the Salt Rock shops next to the Salt Rock Hotel. It was estimated that the permanent residents numbered only around 12,000 in 2005, growing to an estimated 23,000 in 2011 to over 65,000 currently in the immediate area. The first big change came with the Lifestyle Centre, shortly to celebrate it’s 14th anniversary. Ballito Junction, which opened in November 2005, followed by the Ballito Bay Mall and the Tiffanys Shopping Centre. With the roof being installed on the new impressive 80,000sqm Ballito Junction Regional

08

Mall, this R1.6 billion mega shopping centre has attracted all the big names with whispers of some top SA restaurants opening here. This will surely become a very popular shopping and entertainment destination not only for the rapidly expanding permanent local community, but for the region as a whole. The original Ballito Junction will reportedly receive a make over on completion of the new adjoining Regional Mall. The Ballito Junction Mega Mall is due to be completed in March 2017 and will be the largest shopping and entertainment hub in this portion of the North Coast, three levels of shopping with over 130 retailers and restaurants, five levels of secure covered parking and a Nu Metro cinema complex. Retail and commercial elements are now also being added on to or included in various residential estates, making estate living even more convenient and desirable. It is arguably set to become the most rapidly developing area in South Africa. The growth that we have seen over the past ten years will potentially pale in comparison with what is set to take place over the next ten years.

The opening of King Shaka International Airport within the Golden Corridor in May 2010, significantly contributed to an increase in the number of families and businesses relocating to this area and we will likely see this trend continue with the developments taking place in this area. King Shaka International Airport is reportedly now ranked the ninth busiest airport in Africa.

YOUR LIFE IS YOUR GARDEN

Your life is your garden and your thoughts are your seeds, so if your life isn't awesome you've been watering the weeds.” Terry Prince

I

am a keen gardener. I love the feeling of my bare hands touching the soil. It connects my inner soul with the earth. Being outside with the warmth of the sun on my shoulders, the rich smells of the humid soil brings joy to my soul. I love planting seedlings in the lap of mother earth, knowing that in time these seedlings will blossom into full bloom, rewarding my hard work and my commitment with a splendid spell of visual colour. Our lives are our gardens. We are each given a patch of soil to work with. Each patch comes with a unique type of soil, a different layout, different seeds and plants and different climates. Some gardens are traditional and conservative in layout and some gardens are wild and free in growth. Every garden has the potential to be very beautiful. Seeds must be planted and watered. Weeds must be removed. You must shine light on your garden, and make sure that it is loved and nurtured. The universal truth of all gardens is that it will flourish if looked after, despite the choice of layout or plants. In order for a garden to deliver on splendour it should be fed with the right fertilizer and foods, it should be watered regularly and should be weeded timeously. If we want our lives to deliver splendid results we should be committed to tending to our gardens daily. Right now, you have a garden. The garden that is your life. Maybe it is a bit dry and weedy. Maybe it could do with some watering and tending. The point is, work with what you have right now at this moment.

12

There’s no use wishing you had a different garden. This is the one that is yours. Be a good steward to your garden. The following life gardening tips have delivered on beautiful results in my garden: Have a Life Vision

“To accomplish great things, we must not only act but also dream, not only plan but also believe.” Anatole France

A gardener visualizes the beauty of the roses, the blooms, the colours and the patterns of the plants first before anything else. Having a clear picture of your desired outcomes for your life is the starting point of a successful life. It will serve to motivate you in times of difficulty. A clear vision will focus your efforts and it will assist you to be clear on your goals. No successful garden has ever been planted without a vision first. Plan and set goals

“A garden requires patient labour and attention. Plants do not grow merely to satisfy ambitions or to fulfil good intentions. They thrive because someone expended effort on them.” - Liberty Hyde Bailey

When a gardener starts working the soil of the land, it is with a clear plan in mind. A successful gardener is informed on where the seedlings are to be planted, how long it will be before the seedlings bloom and how much of nurturing and time is needed before the results will be visible. Planning and setting clear goals for your life in order to achieve your vision is part of working towards your life’s success. As with a garden, your life goals

should mirror the cycles and seasons. In order to plant and reap success you need to plan. In order to plan you need to be informed on what it is that you want to achieve and what is needed to achieve the required results. One is never too old to renovate your garden. Nurturing

“The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul.” - Alfred Austin

A committed gardener takes care of his/her garden. The successful gardener guards the young seedlings, looking out for pests, disease and weeds. In order to live and achieve the life successes that you envisage you need to take accountability for your life and yourself. You need to be committed to your dreams and goals. You need to work hard at keeping a positive attitude and taking ownership for choices. In order for your life to be fulfilling you need to safeguard your thoughts and your values. Be aware of what you plant inside your mind, because whatever the choice of seed is so will be the bloom. In other words be mindful of negative beliefs and thoughts. Root it out as a gardener will root out weeds. Feed and nurture your life with positive affirmations and actions. Guard your dreams. Resilience

“The garden is growth and change and that means loss as well as constant new treasures to make up for a few disasters.” - May Sarton

Successful gardeners know that not all seedlings will bloom. They do get disappointed when after all the effort and dedication some seedlings are lost, but they never become despondent. Life’s journey is long and the road may be bumpy at times. You might even be derailed of your plan by life’s challenges, but the secret to living a successful life and achieving one's vision is resilience. So many people give up when life becomes difficult. As with a garden one must expect and accept upsets. Seedlings will die, soil will dry out, a hail storm or an unexpected disease may ruin the blooms. The gardener that can manage and accept disappointment as part of the process and still continue working towards his dream garden is usually the successful one. Most successful people have had to endure great challenges and disappointments in life. They chose to embrace the lessons, but not to ever give up. Do not expect to transform your garden all at once. Do not become paralyzed or disheartened because it seems too big a task. Just start somewhere. Take one little corner of your garden, and work with that. All beautiful things are created little by little, piece by piece. They do not appear all at once. The main thing is just to do a little bit every day. In this way, all seeds sprout. A little every day, with water, light, and good soil. Tend to your life like a garden. Be good stewards of the gift of life.

SIGNATURE SIBAYA THE JEWEL IN THE SIBAYA CROWN The North Durban coastline spanning from Durban North, through to uMhlanga, Sibaya Coastal Precinct and Ballito, is without question one of the most highly sought-after residential nodes in KZN. Our Pam Golding Properties research team has cited this sector of the KZN property market as one of the fastest growing areas in the country.

W

ith the recent release of parcels of land in the eagerly anticipated Sibaya Coastal Precinct, the area is abuzz with local and international investors seeking a piece of this spectacular land asset. Coupled with the desirability of the area, the general trend towards secure living has made estates in this coastal node even more attractive. Developers have sought to meet this demand by offering a variety of security estates to cater for a range of budgets. At the pinnacle of this plethora of prime residential estates, resides the spectacular and very exclusive, Signature, Sibaya.

Text Carol Reynolds | Firm Pam Golding Properties | T: 031 573 6000 | E: carol.reynolds@pamgolding.co.za

Signature occupies the most elite position in Sibaya Coastal Precinct, and its crescent shape delivers panoramic views of the ocean. Its location is set at the forefront of the Precinct, which makes it highly desirable, with unobstructed sea-views. With its breath-taking position, and the age-old adage of “location, location, location”, Signature is the jewel in the Sibaya crown. It is comprised of forty-five sea-facing stands nestled within a very upmarket and exclusive enclave. For connoisseurs of the exceptional, Signature promises to deliver state-of-the-art security, unprecedented architecture and a lifestyle par excellence. The stands range in size from 1 000m2 The architectural language is one of understated elegance with a contemporary feel. Steel, timber and glass together with clean lines, create a modern aesthetic that complements the beauty of the surrounds.

16

to 2 000m2 and the floor area ratio is fifty percent, enabling homes to be of substantial proportion. This estate has set a new benchmark for pricing in KZN, with land selling from R4,2 million to as much as R10,5 million, with most of the plots being sold ahead of the official press launch. Two of the key drivers of this luxury estate are the fact that it is pet-friendly, and residents will enjoy access to the beach via wooden walkways through the coastal forest. In addition, its perfect location between eMdloti and uMhlanga cannot be beaten. The estate will offer style, elegance and privacy, with sea-views and security being at the top of the list of priorities. The Sibaya Coastal Precinct as a whole is being unlocked by Tongaat Hulett, and the Precinct covers an extensive area of over 1 000 hectares of prime coastal land. It is bordered by the Ohlanga River in the South and the uMlodti River in the north, and stretches from the N2 highway in the west to the coastline in the east. The existing Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom sits centrally within the Precinct. Tongaat Hulett’s vision for Sibaya is to create a place where nature is protected but accessible to all. Sibaya’s urban design vision is focused on sustainability, with its core philosophy being to encourage residents and visitors to the area

to ‘Reconnect and Rediscover’ the things most important in life, family, community and nature. This vision will ultimately create a thriving, harmonious environment that fosters economic growth for the area whilst simultaneously preserving its natural beauty. In totality, the Sibaya Coastal Precinct will be developed in seven phases starting with nodes one and five, nestled between the M4 and the coastline, offering residential, leisure and limited retail to support local residents. According to the official record of decision, the mix of development rights for nodes one and five, comprises over 2 300 residential units and over 100 000m2 of commercial space together with hotel/resort uses. Signature Sibaya, is the most upmarket residential estate in the Sibaya mix, and this has driven the demand. As property professionals, we are extremely proud to be affiliated with this exciting development because it is expected to put KZN on the global map. With our exceptional sub-tropical climate, pristine coastline and excellent infrastructure, it is anticipated that a destination like Sibaya Coastal Precinct will indeed attract foreign interest, bringing international traffic to the beautiful, yet somewhat undiscovered province of KZN.

Thankfully, more and more people are now becoming aware of the importance of this precious resource to our survival, both physically and economically. Rainwater harvesting is the collection of water from all surfaces on which rain falls and is then stored for later use. It is collected from the roofs of buildings and stored in rainwater tanks. All that is necessary to capture water from rooftops, is to direct the flow of rainwater from roof gutters to a rainwater storage tank. This can be used to replace just a portion or all the municipal water required for the home. This water can be used to fill/top up swimming pools and also for watering your garden - the added benefit is that it will significantly reduce your water bill. Also beneficial to your neighbourhood, by ensuring that the flow of water into the stormwater system is reduced and thus minimising the likelihood of overload. One should always make sure that the gutters are open by removing leaves and debris. This will ensure that the water entering the rain storage tanks is clean. Tanks of 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 litres are available and come in various colours to suit the needs of the client.

Our area is facing one of its worst droughts in a 100 years. The subsequent drought affects the man in the street, farmers and businesses.

Assess storage requirements and choose tank size accordingly. A 10,000 litre tank will keep a family of five watered for a whole month – this will be only using the rain tank water to carry out all household duties. Grey-water is water recycled for the garden from the home. It is not a new phenomenon, but undertaken for many years in many counties around the world. By reusing grey water in a responsible manner, the demand for drinking water is reduced. It is estimated that an average household is using up to 50% of their water consumption on the garden for irrigation purposes. A grey-water system provides safe recycled water for the garden from the bathroom and laundry of the home. This will save money and water and the added bonus is that you get to irrigate your garden all the time, during a drought, during water restrictions and during low rainfall seasons. How does it work? Water from the bathroom and laundry outlets is redirected into a grey water tank which is either situated above or below ground. The system has various filters and a pump. Dependant on the system, water should not lie dormant and should be recycled as soon as possible. When choosing to become water independent, make an informed decision from a qualified company who is able to advise you on what is best for your household needs.

HAND CRAFTED Text Cavan Barry | Photography Etienne Koenig - Eko Photographic

The word “THANDI”, loosely translated, means “lovely” in Zulu. A perfect fit for the fine quality, contemporary items this dedicated group creates. Using traditional hand crafts, these pieces can be showcased in a fluid, ever-changing and expanding collection.

H

ome décor, like art, is rapidly evolving. What we allow into our homes is becoming representative of our lives, our experiences and the dynamic world around us. Kwa-Zulu Natal is a rich opus of multiculturalism; from its natural beauty to its genuine character, we are never short of inspiration. From this inspiration, the Thandi Collection found its origin.

24

Inspired by nature, the Thandi Collection boasts a product line incorporating earthy textures blended into an upmarket, quality product. The collection was developed as a business model to incorporate women in the rural Midlands communities, many of whom use the proceeds of their labour as a primary source of income. The structure

of Thandi production is unusual, and has been a long time in the making, encountering some obstacles along the way, but the journey has resulted in a number of skilled groups of participants able to produce products at an exceptional level of quality.

In the spirit of being kind to the earth, Thandi ottomans are made to last - with solid, high density foam. They are all equipped with removable, washable linings as well as washable outer covers so that they can endure a life that doesn’t always go quite to plan.

Material is delivered to the homes of the participants, some of whom live in very isolated areas. This allows mothers and grandmothers to work from their home environments, enabling them to care for their children while still generating an income. Today, Thandi products have a place in varied settings, reflecting the beauty of a unique South African landscape.

Thandi products combine a traditional, hand-crafted nature with a simple elegance that has a universal, contemporary appeal, suited to the modern connoisseur.

We place huge emphasis on using recycled or eco-friendly materials to hand knit or crochet products. Every effort is made to source locally made raw materials. Our rural environment is so beautiful and we would like to create awareness to preserve this pristine beauty.

Some of the products produced include ottomans, placemats, baskets and blankets that are all handmade. In the spirit of its natural roots, the Thandi Collection incorporates as many ecofriendly materials as possible, including recycled cotton, rustic eco-twine, and cottons that are organic and hand-dyed. Reclaimed timber forms the base for their rustic, raised square ottomans, supplied locally, as are most of the raw materials in the range.

Executive Head Chef, Shaun McGee, provides a one-ofa-kind culinary experience driven by passion and a dream of excellence.

FABULOUS FOOD

Photography Etienne Koenig - Eko Photographic | Location Two Shrimps Dining

The LUXE team was recently invited to a tasting of a selection of dishes available at Two Shrimps Dining at Canelands Beach Club and Spa.

R

ecently revamped, Two Shrimps Dining creates a distinctive dining experience here on the North Coast. The intimate, stylish dining room features an awe inspiring view of the ocean, with floor to ceiling glass doors flooding natural light into the interior. Of course, there is the option of dining out on the wooden deck, providing the perfect setting for the superb new menu. The wine list features some firm favourites and can be expertly paired with the fabulous food on offer. The space is also the perfect backdrop for a brunch cocktail or afternoon drinks with friends. Young, passionate and did we mention young? We sat down with Shaun McGee, Executive Head Chef, to chat about his road to becoming a chef as well as the food on offer at Two Shrimps. "I originally wanted to be a baker when I was very young, but after discovering the hours one needed to keep, I was very

quickly put off!", says Shaun. Growing up around food had a strong influence on his own journey with his mother running a successful catering business and who was enthusiastically supportive of Shaun's dream to become a chef. "Although we didn't have any specific hospitality classes at high school, an entry in my Matric year to a competition advertised in the school newsletter won me a bursary to study at Capsium Culinary Studio which kick-started my career and essentially my adult life as this is where I also met my wife!", laughs Shaun. Shaun's unique culinary style has been influenced by the places he has worked and mentors he has had along the way. "I enjoy taking so called normal dishes and turning them on their heads! Thankfully, I am encouraged to be different and try new, exciting dishes here at Two Shrimps", says Shaun. Backed by his experienced, cross trained team , Shaun has had a seamless integration into Two Shrimps and commented that they play well to each other’s strengths. The menu specifics at Two Shrimps fall into dinner, fine dining and lunch/breakfast, which is more luxury casual. Shaun intends on major seasonal menu changes, in summer and winter with slight menu adjustments in spring and autumn.

Spiced Chocolate Fondant Rich and decadent chocolate fondant with a hint of mixed spice served with beetroot ice-cream and homemade mini marshmallows

With an obvious seafood element, paying homage to the North Coast environment, Shaun's eclectic fusion of styles caters to a varied audience. "I am most proud of my Apple Orchard dish, which caused heated debate with my wife Kirsten who didn’t agree with all my suggested elements". If you’re looking for fine dining with a difference then Two Shrimps should definitely be next your stop.

THE KINGSLEY HEATH STORY

K

ingsley Heath is an African luxury brand conceptualised in 1994. Africa shines through with its originality, diversity, authenticity and creativity; all of which are essential components of what defines luxury. The brand is steeped in tradition and rich with heritage. A truly authentic African Brand. Many African heroes, wild places, customs, symbols, sport, art, rituals and lifestyles are celebrated . All that is awesome about the continent of Africa is celebrated. The celebration of African life is evident everywhere – an exotic, luxurious old style, with a new mood and soul – Kingsley Heath designs are inspired by rich history and African culture. Kingsley Heath is Casual Luxury. Embracing all that Africa has to offer today sundowners on the Serengeti plains, horseback safari in the Okavango, Markets in Mozambique, dhow sailing the coast of Zanzibar, a stroll through the grounds of Hilton College in the Midlands or climbing in the magnificent amphitheatre of the Drakensberg, one understands that we have an identity that is truly ours. It is with this spirit that we offer sophisticated yet contemporary apparel and footwear. Men’s rugged travelled-in pieces which are contrasted by the softer ladies apparel, such as flirty, sheer ruffle blouses, feminine cotton camisoles with intricate embellishments, super-soft t-shirts with hand rendered artworks and vintage styled appliqués. The Kingsley retail experience strives to be a holistic one, filled with the sounds, scents, touches and hues so that our visitors, who are after all kindred spirits, will have had an experience over and above our distinctive product. Today Kingsley Heath has 7 stores across South Africa, with the first opening in 2007 in Cape Town, this store was followed by stores in Durban, Johannesburg & Pretoria. Kingsley Heath is also trading out of 3 stores in the UAE, and there are plans to open in the UK, Germany, USA & Australia.

SMALL KITC ADD CHARACTER WITH THESE TRENDS Text Lucille McFayden | Firm Kitchens for You

If you think your kitchen might be small on space, it doesn’t mean you can’t make it big on style and functionality.

O

ften the hub of the family home, the kitchen is a place to gather, cook, eat, laugh, do homework or pay bills and share in special moments together. When space is limited, it takes smart planning to create a multifunctional and aesthetically appealing kitchen. We see a lot of great small kitchens, and the best ones have smart layouts, maximized efficiency and clever storage solutions. If you are planning a large renovation, or just want to refresh your space, a good kitchen designer will help you get the most out of your small space so that you don’t have to sacrifice the look and efficiency. Some tips from owner and designer Lucille McFadyen of Kitchens For You on how to create the kitchen of our dreams!

Sink

Consider using one larger single under-mount sink as this takes up less space and gives a neater counter appearance. There is a range of sizes to choose from, and you can purchase them in a number of Caesar stone colours - to match your worktop colour. (Check with your designer on colours available) Although more expensive, they are really worth the splurge. Under mounts streamline the look, and neaten up a small kitchen. Try to keep your everyday staples close to your prep area. This will assist you when preparing your meals. A pull out grocery larder close by, helps make the job go faster. Store your chopping boards, vegetable storage and bin in close proximity - make your prep time shorter !

Breakfast Bar and Island

Don’t overlook the fact that you can fit in an eating area into a small kitchen. A place for two, to breakfast together, is always welcome. Extend your worktop at the same height as your counters, so that it can also serve as an extra working area. An island is always a great option, check if you have the space. I have used as little as a 700 mm walkthrough, but make sure you are happy with this space ! Use the ends of an island for a nifty wine rack or shallow recipe book space - every area can be utilized.

Shelves

Talking about shelves, floating shelves are popular, not only for displaying your favourite items but also for storing crockery or your everyday supplies. They can be narrow and fitted into tiny spaces, to add to your storage area. Add some floating shelves in natural wood to break up a white kitchen, you can choose a variety of woods. 42

HENS Remember - The more organized your kitchen is, the larger it will appear. Focus on a few standard items, hide the rest! You need to feel comfortable in your own kitchen so do what feels right for you and only you.˝

Internals

Make use of the internals to your cabinets. The traditional centre shelf can be changed for 3 deep drawers or 3 internal baskets - these give easier access to your items. What designers call “pot drawers”, can also be used for storing a dinner service, casserole dishes and platters. Our company will customize drawers to fit your items - to hold glasses, tea cups and even your baking equipment. No more searching into the back of cupboards to find your things ! What fun to make a feature of your mixing bowls. Add an extra open shelf, then add colour with your bowls - the choice is yours...

Colour scheme

Choosing an all white colour scheme will make your small kitchen look light and airy. If this is not for you, then consider a two tone kitchen. Wood or a darker colour on the base units anchor the room, while the top wall units and tall grocery units in white will open up the space again. Take them to the ceiling, to extend the space and make your kitchen feel larger. If you are not lucky enough to have natural light filtering from your windows into your kitchen, then it is essential to have a lighting plan. Add under wall cabinet lights that ensure the counter-top is well lit, and showcases the suspended style of your wall units. Consider glass fronted wall cupboards that enhance the space and increase the light in your kitchen. Add glossy wall tiles to add to the effect. High gloss cupboards will also reflect light and brighten your kitchen. Make sure you clear your worktops. Fit your microwave above your oven, this clears up your counter space. Add a roller shutter to hide appliances, even your “nespresso”, pods and mugs, if you don’t want to display it!

Making your choice

Remember that customized units cost more. If your designer has made use of every corner and customized to suit your requirements, your kitchen will cost a little more. Before proceeding with a quote, ask the important questions. Are there blind cupboards, is a corner voided off, what height are the cabinets ? Glass doors are more expensive. How many drawers have they allocated you ? What runners and hinges are being used ? These will all add to your quote. A kitchen is an expensive item, and should give you ten to fifteen years service. A bad buy cannot be traded in like a car if you’ve made a mistake, and sadly has no resale value. Do your homework before you decide on your kitchen supplier, it could save you in the long run!

FAB. FUNCTIONAL. WEARABLE. USABLE.

ART

Text Barbie Meyer www.barbiemeyer.com | Images Imbizo Gallery

Barbie Meyer, actress, writer, art-lover and wife of sculptor Marke Meyer, was asked by Imbizo Gallery owner, Isabel Roos, to chat to us about ‘functional art’. Isabel invites all Luxe readers to Imbizo Gallery in Ballito, Imbizo Gallery in Hoedspruit and, soon to be open, Imbizo Gallery at Pearl Walk in Umhlanga. Here you will be able to view some of these gorgeous functional art pieces spoken about in this article.

Gela Tölkien 'Always Holding Back'

Elke Jones Functional Ceramics

I

have an artist friend who designs and makes exquisite little artworks (or ‘sculptures’ I suppose one could call them). Each intricate piece is made out of metal, with enamel or glass or, sometimes, even crushed eggshells incorporated into the design. Each piece carries a thought provoking title.

Well, they’re actually jewellery...but no, more art really – oh, I don’t know any more! She, Gela Tölkien, laughs at my confusion and summarizes it in her German, clear and articulate way: “Barbs, it’s art but you can wear it”. This to me sounds very like a well known cider advert but I get the gist…. It certainly is art. In this case, each individual ‘sculpture’ is suspended in a beautiful, see-through frame. This can then be hung in your home but can also be slipped around your neck or slid onto your finger. They are breathtakingly beautiful on their own but, at the same time, eminently wearable – this is functional art. ‘Form follows function’ is the principle associated with modern architecture the idea being that a building should be designed with its intended purpose in mind. All very sensible methinks. Well, more and more we see a blur of this in all the arts…a doubling up of aesthetic beauty and the practicality of 48

a piece. We see it in everything from a once-off, beautifully fashioned wash basin to exquisite bottle openers. Speaking of which, I have seen some bottle openers worthy of being placed strategically on a polished plinth between bouts of actually opening the wine bottle – the kind of bottle opener that I would definitely not want to fling back into my cutlery drawer that often has an uncanny resemblance to a page from a ‘Where’s Waldo’ book. Yes, functional art in the home and office is certainly a beautiful thing. And, dare I be as downright house-wifely as to say, functional art is a great deal more sensible and practical than yet another gourmet dust collector sitting perched on the pelmet or sideboard. Give me a set of beautiful, arty fire-tongs hanging up next to the fireplace rather than another ceramic duck – to wipe! Imbizo Gallery’s owner and curator Isabel Roos is a certified lover of functional art. The name of her Galleries is the Zulu word for “meeting and coming together” – and her galleries (in Ballito, Hoedspruit and now at The Pearls in Umhlanga) are just that – a meeting place of intriguing and thought provoking South African art much of it ‘functional’. Isabel has a great love for authentic African artefacts and artworks – and owns an

With the help of jewellery makers, Daniele FarinhaFerreira & Bruce Ackerman, Isabel Roos has conceptualized and created some magnificent and essentially very ‘African’ pieces of functional art. “I adore unusual and authentic jewellery, preferably made out of natural products,” Isabel explains. “Much like the traditional Africans of our land, I incorporate crocodile skin, Nguni horn and izighaza (genuine Zulu earplugs) into the works. There will never be two pieces exactly the same...I like that!”

1 love it

The best tip for buying any artwork is the obvious one - because you love it. And not only do you love it but you can easily see yourself playing with it – a gorgeous green leafy salad on that red glass platter or purple beetroot salad in that yellow ceramic bowl. So when buying a ‘practical’ item (water jug, sugar spoon, light fitting, door handle) consider one that makes your heart soar and your mouth smile.

2 search for love Visit galleries instead of just shopping at mainline home stores – you will find out very quickly that there is most definitely such a thing as ‘love at first sight’ when it comes to functional art!

3 share the love Remember a quirky, functional art piece is absolutely ideal for a posh gift – especially a wedding gift (the happy couple will remember you every time they open a bottle of wine...or scrape their shoes on that funky, one-of-a-kind foot scraper!).

impressive personal collection. She sources and sells superb pieces for and to her clientele. She has designed her own African inspired jewellery pieces made from crocodile skin and various metals and has had original, ornate African earplugs fashioned into exquisite necklaces. These have found homes not only around her own neck but around those of celebrities and clients across the globe!

Design is where science and art break even.” Robin Mathew

BARBIE'S TOP 3 TIPS FOR BUYING FUNCTIONAL ART

Isabel fell in love with the ceramic work of Elke Jones. Each item is handmade – individually sketched and then drawn and glazed by the artist. Jones’s signatory white-gold shine that she achieves in her ceramics, creates a special character to her work…and yes, you can eat and drink or pour milk out of them too! David Reade is considered one of this country’s top glass blowers. Reade resides and works in the Cape and has developed a style of glass which is inspired by the deserts and mountains of Africa. He creates functional art ranging from decanters and chandeliers to bowls and vases. No two pieces are ever the same. These too, have snuck into Isabel Roos’s heart and gallery space at Imbizo. Milene Rust has been involved in collecting, designing and sourcing African tribal art and beadwork for twenty years. She has her master’s degree in fine art and has done multiple field trips whilst researching African art and rituals in primitive societies. Milene’s authentic and unusual pieces can also be found at Imbizo.

Isabel Roos and Barbie Meyer

Milene Rust African Beadwork

Isabel’s latest project is a beautiful new Gallery space at Pearl Walk – Umhlanga’s first high-end, boutique shopping Mall. This space will be an extension of Isabel’s existing galleries – exhibiting and selling well known artists’ work, as well as the work of artists creating functional art. The Mall is set to officially open in November, but Imbizo Gallery will be opening with a bang on Thursday the 27th Oct.'16. Artists exhibiting at the launch will be bronze sculptor Marke Meyer and painters Sarah Danes Jarrett, Natasha Barnes and Nico Roos. All art lovers are invited to attend & celebrate with a glass of something gorgeous.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN Text Uys & White Landscape Architects Photography Barry Bowditch Location Hilltop Private Estate & Palm Lakes Family Estate

The LUXE team chatted to local landscape architect, Lucas Uys from Uys and White Landscape Architects about the interesting designs at two of the estates in the area

T

he Hilltop Zimbali was a challenging entrance to design due to the topography of the site. The arrival was facing into a 6m high retaining wall. The design philosophy was to drive under a floating roof to scale down the space and focus the attention on a feature wall. With Engineering input, cavities were left in the retaining wall in which in the first phase of creation, at random concrete planter drawers were installed. The gatehouse still imitates the Bali influences to conform to the larger Zimbali building philosophy. The concrete wall is transforming daily into a more advanced ‘Ficus root sculpture’. The sustainability of this wall is on the gravitational flow of water towards the back of the concrete wall to feed the roots. Two Ficus species were used as the tree palette, Ficus ingens and Ficus natalensis. The design during the maturing phase provides the opportunity for the roots to break the concrete drawers and allow the roots to cover the wall. This is an example of sustaining living art.

50

In 2011 Uys and White received an Award of Excellence in Design from the Institute for Landscape Architecture in South Africa for the Ficus wall.

The Red-leaved fig (Ficus Ingens) is a fig species with an extensive range in the subtropical to dry tropical regions of Africa and southern Arabia. Despite its specific name, which means "huge", or "vast", it is usually a shrub or tree of modest proportions. It is a fig of variable habit depending on the local climate and substrate, typically a stunted subshrub on elevated rocky ridges, or potentially a large tree on warmer plains and lowlands. Ficus natalensis is a tree in the family Moraceae. It is commonly known as the Natal fig, or "Mutuba" to locals. These trees are distributed from north-eastern South Africa to Uganda and Kenya. The bark of the tree is harvested, without harming the tree, to make barkcloth, an environmentally-friendly, renewable material. Skilled artisans incorporate this unique fabric into many modern uses, including fashion, accessories, housewares, interior design, and art. The vision is to create sustainable jobs in East Africa by creating a global demand for barkcloth.

In our North Coast Sub-Tropical climate we proposed a resort type Estate entrance at Palm Lakes Family Estate. The design proposal is a celebration of colour and texture, exotic and indigenous planting that steers away from the linearity of most Estate entrances. Due to the over controlled indigenous plant palette, the coastal zone has lost the excitement of colour in the vegetation palette. Palm Lakes Estate entrance is an example of how exotic plant choices can enhance the landscape without using invader species. The arrival space is shaped with vertically planted embankments and organic paving layouts to create an external ‘room’. This design resolution also reduces the impact of the gatehouse. All security functionality is kept with external parking and U-turn facilities. Although the entrance road is totally organic on the clients’ request, a very dramatic centre island with Royal palms and Cycas reflects the spirit of the era. This is also reflecting most sugar farm entrances. Reflecting our heritage.

SOUTH AFRICAN SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR

The LUXE team chatted to Sarah Collins, entrepreneur and owner of Wonderbag on her experience at the UN and her Fairlady, "Woman of the Future" achievement.

M A KDII N G A FFERENCE Text Caitlin Dreyer | Firm The Wonderbag | Photography Supplied | www.wonderbagworld.com

I woke just before my alarm went off with an inner knowing that I am off to do big things - in my fog of waking up I knew something big is about to happen, other than the coffee I needed to jump start my system - What is the big mission? I smiled, yes I remember - we are launching the Coalition of Action tomorrow - a call to action of the people, leaders and carers, those who care and want to be part of long term positive change!”

T

his is how Sarah Collins wakes up most mornings. Positive and with a deep belief in humanity and its ability to change and collaborate for good. She shares this energy with insatiable generosity – from facebook broadcasts like this to relentlessly travelling the world. Over the past two months, Sarah has managed to squeeze a year of living into 60 days. Some of the highlights include Sarah’s key involvement in the Dell Women’s Entrepreneur Network (DWEN) conference, she led discussions on Emerging Innovations with change leaders – discussions that set how Wonderbag is innovating

for a future-ready world using technology to help with basic needs and improving life in the rapidly-advancing developing world. “It’s absolutely brilliant when large corporations and organizations support initiatives like these, which might start small but have game-changing potential to impact society and business for the better. Dell has a long-term commitment to women entrepreneurs on any continent, and we are thrilled to offer women like Sarah the technology and the access to networks and markets to scale their business globally,” shared Elizabeth Gore, Dell Entrepreneur in Residence. 53

Coalition of Action: This global Wonderbag initiative unites business and change leaders to address the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The launch in August in Cape Town already secured a commitment to over 50 000 bags that will be activated in Africa.

Sarah has since been accepted into the global DELL Accelerator programme, which allocates meaningful support to upscale businesses to massive impact.

United Nations SDG Summit: Sarah sharing the Wonderbag solution and it's powerful link to "Time Poverty and Using Data and innovation as Catalysts out of economic deprivation".

Sarah, with her wanderlust and fierce business determination, spent just over a month in the US. She was invited to address the United Nations to lobby her thoughts on Time Poverty and its links to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. This time abroad was also spent firming up partnerships with big backers like Unilever, Google, Huffington Post, and Jane Goodall to lead change via the Coalition of Action, headed up by Sarah. Within days of arriving home, Sarah was also awarded the Fairlady 2016 Women of the Future Award. And she still finds time on top of this to blog for Huffington Post. We found out more about her personal journey during this time: You make it look so easy with your smile and big laugh – is it really this easy? Yes – I mean, there are the most amazing people out there that genuinely just want to

help as much as they can! Especially as business is starting to shift from CSI to real purpose orientated brands. But also no, it takes getting up over and over and over again. In the face of every critic – myself being the worst one! Don't get me wrong, I love the Wonderbag, in fact, I more than love it, it's a part of me, it's taken me on a journey beyond my wildest dreams (and darkest nightmares!) But it’s what I call my scrappy journey, a journey that seems to get scrappier and scarier, not smarter and more dignified! But, it is an authentic, powerful journey of constant learnings, musings, roundabouts and tears, lost and found moments, more ideas and next big things. I believe that sharing, caring, connecting, being vulnerable, going into the arena bootstrapped and all, are the way forward for me and many other leaders in the change world! What was it like talking at the United Nations? It was again affirmation that Wonderbag is growing up to be rather smart, on trend, on message, and it’s even been called iconic. But, I certainly am not referred to in any of those ways! In fact, a friend had to wrestle off my poncho the other day as I walked into an

interview as it had holes in it. I didn't notice, they weren't big enough to let the cold in and it was my favourite. As I was about to speak at an audience at the UN general assembly, someone asked for a copy of my speech - WHAT? I didn’t even have one! But my message was and is clear "women have to be given equal opportunities which means REAL ACTION by leaders, business and governments around the world”! We need to give women back time and to save money and resources, and the Wonderbag is one simple step and a powerful catalyst to shift out of poverty. In short, it was a success. I’ll be heading back to the US in September to talk at the Social Good Summit. I’ll be sharing our global Coalition of Action programme as well as how Wonderbag has

grown into a “data-heavy” organisation – banking data in data-less communities to develop highimpact solutions. This conference is held annually during the UNGA Week and unites a dynamic community of global leaders and grassroots activists to discuss solutions for the greatest challenges of our time and collaborate to unlock the potential of technology to make the world a better place. During your trip you met with major big corporate names. What was that like? Every time I meet, talk, inspire, educate and engage it contributes to others knowledge and gives depth and understanding as to where we all fit into this community that is the world, to leave it in a better place and to impact lives across the world. The biggest highlight has been the fact that Wonderbag is no longer seen as a "third world solution" but people in the U.S. and Europe are seeing very clearly how it applies to their lives and creates more time for them to do other things than cook. It allows healthy meals whilst creating space in the kitchen for discussions, real eye to eye conversations with your children or partner without having one eye on a boiling pot. It has also given me the insights 8 years on what the next steps are to truly integrate this into homes in all cultures demographics and economic backgrounds. I know for sure this product is well on its way to main-

streaming. The framework we’ve built is propagating, and it’s no longer seen as a silly cooking bag but something that has massive impact implications, as seen by the endorsements of Kees Kruythoff , Arianna Huffington, Jane Goodall and more Wonderbag supporters. Where are you now with Wonderbag? Wonderbag is taking its rightful place and main streaming into kitchens across the world. We’ve proven that it’s bringing answers to the women who were once living on 20 U.S. Cents, after the Wonderbag effects, now generate $2 per day to live on - that's huge success, they have more time and more money, dignity and freedom.

On this basis, I’ve launched the Coalition of Action, which unites communities and leaders across the globe to address many of the world’s Sustainable Development Goals with the Wonderbag as a catalyst. The COA will pool major resources from investors, philanthropists, big business and influential leaders to empower communities across the globe. The goal is fundamentally to collaborate to end poverty by bringing a total solution of a better life to women in the rural world, connecting brands with data, lifestyle and prosperity. Last but not least – how does it feel to be 2016 Fairlady Woman of the Future? I’ll say it again - my heroines are African women and I’m exceptionally proud to be African.

“Our resilience and capacity for innovation is so inspiring!”

LUXE invites all our readers to join this initiative for the opportunity to win their very own Wonderbag. Like the LUXE MEDIA GROUP Facebook page and comment on the Wonderbag competition post. Your comment must nominate a charity/person/group that you think will benefit from owning a Wonderbag. The winning entry will win a Wonderbag for themselves and their nomination.

CRAWFORD NATURE NORTH COAST CONNECTS CHILDREN WITH

The three schools on the Crawford North Coast campus are moving towards conservancy status. It is a campus that fundamentally encourages their young people to engage in the environment by allowing them the opportunity to actively protect it. Environmental awareness starts in the classroom, it expands to the school and eventually fosters change in the community at large. Text Debbi Wagner | Location Crawford North Coast | Telephone 032 943 3240 | Email dwagner@crawfordschools.co.za | Website www.crawfordschools.co.za

Let Nature be your Teacher.

S

ustainable activities at the school are carried out by means of water conservation measures, which includes borehole irrigation, rainwatertank-water storage and use thereof, and the planting of indigenous, waterresilient plants. Energy conservation is practised through the installation of computer-controlled energy-saving devices on air-conditioning and geyser units. Solid-waste recycling projects, vegetable gardens and paper saving methods by means of digital replacement techniques are ongoing as people give back to the earth from which they derive and to which they owe so much.

56

This mentality of mutual respect between the Crawford College students and their natural environment is strengthened with knowledge and skills, in all subjects but particularly in Life Sciences and Geography, where the development of this relationship is integrated with intellectual input and a logical scientific approach. The Arts and Languages develop this environmental consciousness further through emotional and spiritual awareness. This can be seen in many of the artistic productions and exhibitions that reveal the students' deep sense of “earthy connectedness.

Crawford North Coast provides their students the opportunity to reclaim the magic, the ability to grow and learn to their fullest in their individual and unique experiential way through the joy of exploration and discovery in the natural world. But perhaps even more important is the hope that children will internalize and develop the environmental values and grow up to become the future stewards of the Earth who will preserve the diversity and wonder of Nature.” Part of the indigenous coastal forest bordering the school.

At Crawford Preparatory, the children are offered opportunities to reconnect with the natural environment and thus create a future generation that values and preserves nature. The children’s curiosity is encouraged through a variety of tasks and lessons including the design and creation of their own vegetable gardens on the school premises which stimulates their natural curiosity, imagination, wonder and discovery. Their learning focuses on the various components that make up our natural environment, including:

Water, water purification and conservation Vegetation and seedlings Sand and soil Earth worms and bugs Diversity of colour, textures and materials Structures, equipment and materials Ways to experience the changing seasons Protection against hazards and elements of nature Reaping and harvesting their crops At Crawford Pre-Primary, the Reggio-inspired playground provides many opportunities for outdoor learning. The children are exposed to a variety of natural mediums like mud, pebbles, clay, leaves, sawdust and bark. This type of play is important for the young child’s development as sensory stimulation is a necessary part of the brain’s development and provides tactile stimulation through touching different textures. Setting up a mud kitchen in the garden where children can experiment to see how materials mix, mash, pour, transform and squish is great fun! A wonderful way for young children to discover and learn is through gardening. The Grade 0 children embark on a gardening project every Spring, and are responsible for digging and preparing the garden beds, planting, recycling food scraps for the worms in the wormery, watering, weeding, observing the plants growing and flowering, harvesting and preparing the food for consumption or to sell. Crawford North Coast is privileged to have an indigenous forest on their doorstep. Equipped with magnifying glasses and bug boxes, the children are taken on guided walks through the forest to explore, discover, and learn. They engage all their senses as they smell the moist, biodegrading vegetation, observe the ant trails and their footprints left behind in the soil, feel the texture of bark and the leaves, listen to the leaves rustling and the bird calls. Their curiosity is satisfied as they overturn the rocks to discover what lives beneath. The teachers use this opportunity to educate the children about conserving their environment and every plastic packet, tin or bottle is carefully put into a packet and taken back to the classroom to be re-cycled. 57

Pickersgill’s Reed Frog (Hyperolius pickersgilli) is Red Listed as Critically Endangered, due to its small Area of Occupancy (9km2), severely fragmented distribution and a continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. It is endemic to the coastal region of KZN and has been prioritized for conservation research regarding threats, population size and ecology. It is the first Threatened South African frog for which an ex-situ (captive) programme has been implemented. It is estimated that only 1% of the original habitat of Pickersgill’s Reed Frog remains. It occurs at a few isolated sites within its limited distribution, only two of which occur in Protected Areas. It is threatened by habitat loss as a result of industrial development, sugarcane cultivation and afforestation. Conservation actions for Pickersgill’s Reed Frog are guided by the Biodiversity Management Plan for this species, which was developed jointly by the Endangered Wildlife Trust and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife with input from relevant stakeholders and landowners (including ACSA). This is the first such action plan for a frog species in South Africa, and outlines the key threats facing the species and identifies actions to mitigate against these threats and who is responsible for implementing these actions. The Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Threatened Amphibian Programme (EWT-TAP) and North-West University have developed and tested a monitoring protocol for Pickersgill’s Reed Frog and, as part of this, have conducted a population estimate for Mount Moreland’s ‘Froggy Pond’. The EWT-TAP is also carrying out alien invasive clearing and restoration at four sites for Pickersgill’s Reed Frog in the greater Durban area, including at Mount Moreland, and is looking at long-term solutions for protecting the vulnerable coastal wetlands that this species calls home. CONSERVATION AT KING SHAKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Text Christopher Jones | Photography Chris Allan Photography | Location King Shaka International Airport

T

he Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) prides itself in creating partnerships with its neighbours and is privileged to be associated with the Mount Moreland Conservancy. This passionate group which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year is dedicated to maintaining and improving the natural environment in and around Mt Moreland. One of the wetlands in Mt Moreland that the Conservancy pays particular attention to is “Froggy Pond” which is situated on ACSA-owned land just south of the runway at King Shaka International Airport (KSIA). This small wetland has global biodiversity significance given that it is one of the last remaining natural habitats for the Pickersgill’s Reedfrog. This critically endangered frog is found in only a handful of wetlands on the entire planet! Froggy Pond is host to numerous other frogs, not to mention an abundance of other fauna and flora. ACSA as the responsible landowner embarked upon a programme to ensure the sustainable future of this area, and has been working hand-in-hand with the Mt Moreland Conservancy to realise this goal. It is well known that tourism is a powerful driver of conservation in South Africa. In a bid to make Froggy Pond more open to the public ACSA created a viewing site on a hill overlooking the wetland. This terraced area, planted with a profusion of indigenous and eye-catching plants, sets the scene for people to observe nature in its resplendence. The area is used extensively during the summer months as this is the period that the Barn Swallows can be seen flying in and amongst the reeds. The viewing area complements the main Lake Victoria site on the other side of Mt Moreland. The second intervention was a pilot-project to remove alien vegetation encroaching around the wetland. This was done by providing funds and expertise to the Mt Moreland Conservancy through KSIA’s Social Enterprise Development initiative. This project provided skills development and training to unemployed members of the local community who became champions in the fight against Invasive Alien Plants. The success of the pilot project has prompted ACSA to consider an in-depth long term project with the Conservancy. Watch this space! 61

During the Environmental Impact Assessment for the King Shaka International Airport the consulting team came across a unique challenge. This challenge presented itself in the form of more than a million barn swallows that spend the South African Summer roosting in a wetland just to the south of the airport. These tiny birds heralded dusk and dawn with the aerial equivalent of a chamber orchestra; wingbeats and birdsong filling the air as they formed into majestic display swarms. With some concern it was noted that these display swarms congregated just underneath where the aircraft would soon be flying. This swarm was only around for a few minutes a day but could have perilous consequences if not addressed. Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) in response invested in a unique solution, the Bird Radar. This sophisticated piece of technology uses radar tracking to observe when and where the barn swallows are forming these display swarms, as well as the risk to aircraft posed by them. This information is relayed to the Air Traffic Controllers in real-time, who are then able to advise pilots of any danger posed to them and their valuable cargo; passengers like you and I. The system became operational in 2010 in time for the opening of the Airport, and has been utilised ever since. The reality of the situation, it turns out, is that the airport and barn swallows are able to coexist. The barn swallows treat the aircraft in much the same way

The Barn Swallow (European Swallow) is not an endangered species. In fact it is currently plentiful. Why then does this little bird receive so much attention? It is because the Swallow has an extraordinary lifestyle, eating and drinking on the wing – a lifestyle that takes it thousands of kilometres across the Globe during migration and which brings it in close contact with humans during the spring and summer months. It is said that the Barn Swallow enjoys a perpetual summer, no winter enters this bird. The Barn Swallow is also referred to as the’ rain bird’ as they arrive with the spring rains after the dry winter. In South Africa, as spring arrives in September, the migratory European Swallows/Barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) start to appear. At Mount Moreland, South Africa’s largest Barn Swallow Site Icon roosting grounds, the initial small flocks swell to thousands and then millions of Swallows, by November up to 3million Barn Swallows can be seen every evening over the Lake Victoria wetland roost until April. Evening displays differ widely during the Swallow season depending on weather, wind, degree of light and insects, an overcast sky can offer as equally spectacular displays as an evening sky with a picturesque sunset.

they would a large bird of prey, and avoid them. When an aircraft approaches the Barn Swallows, the swarm break into two smaller groups either side (and well below) the aircraft’s flightpath. Once the aircraft has passed these gregarious birds reform their larger swarm and proceed with their diurnal or nocturnal pastimes. The assurance of the Bird Radar coupled with the behaviour of the Barn Swallows, has resulted in a mutual co-existence with the airport and its winged neighbours. To date there have not been any birdstrikes on large groups of Barn Swallows, nor have there been any significant aircraft diversions because of the Bird Radar. This story would not have been successful without the collective approach adopted by the airport with the community of Mount Moreland and the Mount Moreland Conservancy. This community possesses the valuable historic and current information whilst ACSA provides the technology and social development support for the community.

This awesome spectacle, half an hour before sunset, of the Barn Swallows coming home to roost every night (Nov to April) has become a world wide attraction and recognized as a Natural Wonder and Global Treasure. It is a sight to be witnessed and experienced, no words can describe the awesome Barn Swallow evening display other than seeing it with one’s own eyes. The Barn Swallows at Mount Moreland and their roosting habitat are now recognized as a world famous site and IBA (International Birding Area). To fully enjoy the Barn Swallow viewing experience at Mount Moreland bring your camp chairs, sun-downers, and picnic –essentials are Binoculars and mozzie cream. There is a R10.00 per person entrance fee that is used for site maintenance and improvements. Angie Wilken Chairperson: Mount Moreland Conservancy

AROMA [treatment, remedy intention to relieve]

C

[scent, fragrance, perfume, smell, bouquet]

THERAPY

lose your eyes and remember a very special day (or a special person) in your life and you will usually remember associated smells. This is your sensory part of a memory. The smell has become part of that memory. It is this powerful imprint that fragrance has on us that Aroma therapists tap into. Want to know my all-time favourite blend? Keep reading....it’s towards the end. Each person also has their own unique fragrance signature; after all, we don’t all use the same perfume. However when making perfumes, cheaper synthetic man-made molecules are often used. These synthetics created in a laboratory by a chemist cannot compare to Essential oils that gets used when making Aromatherapy blends. This is because essential oils come from plants, and each plant will have their own unique special chemical makeup, depending on the year it was planted, where it was planted, how much rain it got and how much sun… and this uniqueness implies then that we are not merely using the oils for their aroma. We use the oils to impart their subtle power to our physical and psychological health. I often get asked, “So WHAT IS Aromatherapy, and how do I use it at home?” Aromatherapy is a physically and psychologically healing therapy that compliments your general medicine...or it can be used to keep you healthy so that medicine may not be needed. Aromatherapy uses two types of oils that are blended together; Essential oils, which give it fragrance and healing power, and Vegetable oils, which nourish and preserve the skin. There are lots of Essential oils to choose from. Most of you are familiar with Lavender, Tea Tree, Rose and Geranium. And have you journeyed down the road less travelled to find Cinnamon and Sandalwood? Let’s go now even further down the mysterious path and find Patchouli or even Fennel? The two vegetable oils most commonly used are grapeseed oil, which has a light non-offensive smell, and is only slightly viscous. Sweet Almond oil is thicker than Grapeseed, and is a lovely oil to use if your skin is a little drier, provided you are not allergic to nuts. A lovely rich, nourishing and skin restoring oil to use is Avocado oil. These vegetable oils are used as a vehicle to carry the important essential oils into the body, via the surface blood capillaries and sebaceous glands of the skin. Once the essential oils have entered the body, the essential oils travel to the area that requires assistance with healing. At the first signs of the flu season, with all of the sniffing, sneezing and coughing going on… out comes Eucalyptus and Chamomile.

4 Drops of Eucalyptus oil gets added to the bathwater where a luxurious soak ensures the Eucalyptus enters the airways, opening up the chest and killing off any viruses. Then 3 drops of Chamomile will be heated in an aromatherapy burner. As the aroma of Chamomile rises in the air, it will clean all the germs that were sneezed all over your rooms, and when the “offending sneezers” breathes in the chamomile, it will relax the spasm of the cough, calm any associated flu headaches and ensure a deeply calming sleep. Keep a few drops (Lavender/Neroli/Cedarwood/Rose) on a tissue in your car, so those 30 minutes of your day becomes very pleasant. If you are interested in a Wrinkle Warrior Blend mix 10 ml Sweet Almond Oil, 1 drop Patchouli and 1 drop of Frankincense. Or if you are interested in a Stress Soothing Blend mix 10 ml Grapeseed Oil, 1 drop Neroli and 1 Drop of Lavender. Still interested in my all-time favourite blend? When you need a hug real bad, and every second of your day felt like nails on a chalkboard, this will have you singing “Oh What a Wonderful World”. 1 drop Cinnamon, 4 drops Grapefruit, 1 drop Vetiver blended with 10 ml Grapeseed, 5 ml Avocado oil and 5 ml Borage oil. Massage this gently onto your legs, lower back and temples. Now you can never go back! You will always know, of the subtle delicious, warm, fragrant healing power that lies within your grasp. Use these wonderful oils; in your bath, in your aromatherapy burner, when your son scrapes his knee, when your spouse has a headache, when your daughter struggles with exam stress, and when you need to sing. Enjoy!

DEVELOPMENT OF A SUSTAINABLE

ENERGY SOLUTION Blythedale Coastal Resort is situated at a prime location along the KwaZulu-Natal

North Coast, just 25 minutes from the New King Shaka International Airport and only 20 minutes north of Ballito. The gradual migration of people to this region has necessitated the need for a lifestyle development.

B

lythedale Coastal Resort has a demand for bulk electrical and water supply. With the ever increasing demand for electricity and water in the region, coupled with risks posed by climate change impacts, water scarcity and increased capital burden on bulk infrastructure, Blythedale Coastal Resort intends to take advantage of new technologies. We intend reducing all upfront infrastructure capital costs by reducing dependence on the regional electrical, and water network as well as the sanitation systems. To this end, Blythedale Development (Pty) Ltd, the developers of the Blythedale Coastal Resort have appointed Royal HaskoningDHV as advisor on the bulk service integration of water, sanitation and energy. WATER AND WASTEWATER SYSTEMS A feasibility study of Blythedale Coastal Resort was carried out which entailed identifying viable technologies in the market which takes advantages of reduced reliance on public utilities or services including Municipal water supply, energy supply via the National Grid and waste disposal to landfill. Different integrated concepts were analysed and developed; encompassing potable water systems, wastewater treatment, energy supply and waste management. Multiple water saving options were identified, analysed and considered feasible to ensuring reduction in the ultimate consumption for the Blythedale Development. They include installation of water saving appliances such as low flow aerated taps, dual flush toilets, water efficient shower heads, water efficient washing machines & dishwashers, drip irrigation, smart metering and smart sprinkler systems. Good housekeeping was also identified as critical to fostering positive attitudinal change of water consumers. It is vital to consider the integration of designs based on sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) into the planning of the development. This is inclusive of systems like permeable pavements, swales, constructed wetlands, infiltration trenches, etc., which allows for water resources management, water quality improvement, storm water reuse, improved amenity and ecosystem preservation. Considering that South Africa is a water- stressed country, technologies based on desalination from a techno-economic perspective for potable water production to reduce dependence on Municipal water supply have been analysed. Technical options based on water re-use for second quality water were also considered. They include rainwater harvesting, grey water systems and effluent from the wastewater treatment plant. A centralized activated sludge plant was found feasible upon analysis of various technological options for wastewater treatment.

ENERGY SUPPLY With respect to energy, the target is to ensure power supply at the Blythedale development at all times. This includes catering for the maximum load during off peak periods with minimal or zero reliance on the National Grid. Consideration was given to various forms of energy and power, with comparison against conventional/national grid system. Options considered are solar PV, natural gas (directly to the end-user and for peak-shaving purposes). A number of options based on energy mix and supply as well as reticulation to the end-user were also considered. Optimal economic benefits, security and sustainability of supply, flexibility, scalability and future outlook were primary consideration factors in evaluating options. A step further was taken by investigating technologies that could result in the reduction of energy consumption at the Blythedale Development. Viable technologies recommended for adoption include CFL and LED lighting, installation of motion sensors and timers for heating & cooling, smart metering, gas reticulation to households and solar water heating. WASTE MANAGEMENT The waste management hierarchy has been considered as a framework which underpins integrated waste management at the Blythedale Development. Upon estimation of the waste generation potential of Blythedale, several waste management options aligned to the waste management hierarchy were considered, and their applicability to the Blythedale development ascertained. They include source based separation, material recovery facility, composting, thermal treatment of waste and anaerobic digestion. Source-based separation, recovery of easily recyclable waste components and composting of green waste were found to be technical feasible and economically viable for the Blythedale development. Strategies for awareness raising with respect to waste minimisation and green waste management were also put forward. OUTCOME A number of integration concepts have been assessed, recommended and compiled by the Royal HaskoningDHV team into a Blue Print for development of the Blythedale Coastal Resort. The Blue Print thus offers great potential for sustainable development as it relates to Bulk Service Infrastructure and Building Guidelines for houses and resorts going forward. Waxing Lyrical: Directors & Fiduciary Duties Text Simon Watson | Firm Cox Yeats Attorneys T: 031 536 8530 | E: swatson@coxyeats.co.za

I

t is not uncommon to hear people wax lyrical about “fiduciary duties”.

A fiduciary duty is an obligation which the law automatically imposes on a person who has accepted a legally recognised position involving trust. Examples of positions which come with fiduciary duties include: • • • •

executors; partners of partnerships; trustees of trusts; and directors of companies

These persons are in different types of fiduciary positions which entail varying degrees of power, discretion and trust. Directors of companies include directors of home owners associations incorporated as non profit companies. Directors of non profit companies are bound by the same fiduciary obligations as directors of profit companies.

A fiduciary duty can require or prohibit an action. The duties imposed on a person in a fiduciary position can therefore be positive or negative but they are always directed towards ensuring that the powers and discretion which come with the position of trust are used in a transparent and honest way for their intended purpose.

ACTION

COMMENT

Using company resources for a personal objective and personal gain.

For example: Obtaining unauthorised loans.

Selling a company asset below value in circumstances where the director benefits directly or indirectly from the discount.

For example: To third parties in which the director has an interest.

Giving away company assets without authority.

For example: To third parties related to the director or even to employees.

Authorising a company to borrow money in connection with an unauthorised objective.

For example: Solely to pay off debts in respect of which a director has stood surety.

Broadly speaking fiduciary duties can be divided into two categories being:

Refusing to register the transfer of shares without good reason.

This purpose of this power is usually confined to excluding a transferee who will have disruptive influence on the company.

(a) the duty to avoid a conflict of interest; and (b) the duty to exercise powers in good faith.

Issuing shares with the objective of creating a new majority or frustrating a takeover bid.

A director is not authorised to issue shares for no other purpose other than to ensure he or she director is re-elected.

The source of these duties is the common law and, more recently, the Companies Act 71 of 2008. The following table provides some relevant example of when fiduciary duties are relevant to directors of a company.

Exercising powers to defeat the wishes of For example: By entering into a long the majority of the shareholders. term management agreement in order to frustrate intentions of new directors.

It is important, particularly for directors, to understand that fiduciary duties exclude the common law obligation to act with a reasonable degree of care, skill and diligence – also recently codified in the Companies Act. Fiduciary duties do not generally prohibit a person from resigning from a position and competing with a company (subject to some qualifications). This type of prohibition normally (not always) requires a separate contractual undertaking, often in the form of a restraint of trade agreement.

MO'S NOODLES Mo's Noodles is one of the iconic restaurants on Durban's North Coast that moved from Morningside to the heart of Umhlanga over 3 years ago. A funky open space restaurant that sits on the quiet roadside is a relaxed yet fun place to meet. Owned and run by Jo-Ann Lundy, the store is set slightly away from the hustle and bustle of village life, because (as she says) it is a destination station. Once you've sampled the delicious flavours that Mo's offers you set your heart on a firm favourite, and like so many that would be the sesame and peanut chicken on coconut noodles or the calamari with lentil and feta salad - which is our absolute favourite. One of her secret dishes which is top of her list is the spicy chicken breasts with pan fried noodles, but you'll only pick your favourite favourite once you've tried and tasted what's on offer!

In December last year Mo's (Jo) expanded and opened an express store in station drive, off Umgeni road. This store is set inside a furniture shop, Con Amore. Once again, a destination place, well supported by those who miss the Florida road based store. Although a smaller menu, Jo has ensured all the most popular meals are available. The ever fresh ingredients, coupled with her tried and tested recipes is what sets this restaurant apart which now has become one of Durban's landmarks. Where: 21 Lighthouse Road, Umhlanga 031 561 1722 When: Open Monday to Saturday 12-3:30pm & 5:30-9pm Why: Destination Station | Delicious noodles, noodles & more noodles!

PORTFOLIO WHAT CHANGES SHOULD YOU BE MAKING TO YOUR PORTFOLIO RIGHT NOW Text Gert Smith | Firm PSG Wealth Empangeni | Tel: 035 772 7365

Reading the latest news, you may be feeling quite concerned. Should we be making significant changes to our portfolios to adapt to this new environment?

T

he negative news flow seems to be endless: Brexit, ongoing market volatility, a volatile global political environment, central banks that are grappling with tough decisions about the few tools they have left at their disposal to stimulate economies out of low-inflation and low-growth environments, and here in South Africa, a rand that has reached new lows. The amount of information that we are able to access can trigger action, based on fear or a false sense of confidence, and this compels us to make short-term decisions. The fear and anxiety created by the latest news can urge us on to seek more information, so we read more news. We invest precious time doing more research (which just feeds our sense of unease) rather than stopping to take stock and focus on the foundation of our long-term plans. Opinions in the media about how bad things are, support our fears and therefore our desire to act. This becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. We are terrified of missing an opportunity, or being left behind. We forget that doing nothing is also a decision. Doing nothing is a form of action. In times like these, short-term decisions can undermine these efforts materially. So how should we react? We all know academically that we need to bring some rational thought to what is an emotionally charged time. However, it is hard to make good decisions when we are feeling emotional.

dreams, or not. During the global financial crisis, many investors made bad decisions and many are still waiting to get back into the market. Our fundamental role at PSG is to help investors make good money decisions.

Carl Richards, director of investor education for the BAM ALLIANCE, a community of over 130 independent wealth management firms throughout the US, uses his website and his blog to share his insights using simple drawings and explanations to help financial advisers and investors make better long-term investment decisions. None of this is dramatically new, but we hope that some of the practical pointers in his drawings help you to refocus on making optimal decisions. We appreciate that each of you have your own way of handling these situations – that you know your portfolio and needs best. So without any intention to offend or patronize, we thought it would be interesting, if nothing else, to share some of Carl’s diagrams and the investment lessons they hold. Be careful not to focus on the short term when you decide to make changes to your portfolio. Over the short term, the market tends to look and feel a lot scarier than it is in reality over the long term.

Money represents hard work and trials and tribulations of what it took to earn it. It also represents what we will or won’t achieve in terms of our life goals, the security and safety of our family and the potential to achieve our

Be very careful of making a decision that will crystalise a loss when the market is at an extreme low. The recent Brexit announcement is a case in point. The UK market dropped significantly, but then rallied soon thereafter. If you had been invested in UK equities and had panicked and sold, you would not have benefited from the subsequent rally.

Unless you are a professional share trader, it doesn’t pay to trade frequently. The trading costs and tax impact of doing so will undermine your long-term wealth. It will also prevent you from letting the power of compounding work for you – which takes time!

In closing, once you have developed a plan for your investments, structured a portfolio and implemented it, one of the best things to do is nothing! It can sound counter-intuitive until you consider one of Warren Buffett’s perspectives on investing: ‘Benign neglect, bordering on sloth, remains the hallmark of our investment process.’

A PASSION FOR WRITING & LIFE

On a beautifully sunny winter morning, the LUXE team headed north to take in the amazing views at Blythedale Beach and to chat with local writer extraordinaire Gustav Preller and his wife Sarah. With tea and scones in hand, we were regaled with fascinating stories of the life and times of this passionate man... Gustav decided to change his next book in terms of genre, narrative style and structure, to push his writing to a higher level. This was recognised when he was one of two writers awarded the 2015 Proverse Prize in April 2016.

A

lthough journalism and writing ran in his blood from an early age, Gustav Preller would only pursue this dream once retired.

Gustav's early childhood was spent on a farm near Pretoria and his family moved to Durban in his mid-teens - this is where his lifelong love for the ocean developed. His love for writing led him to pursue a degree in literature and philosophy (BA Hons) instead of a business qualification. A chance meeting on a ship on his way back from London, changed the course of his life and he ended up in the corporate world. For the next 38 years, Gustav worked for multi-national corporations in South Africa and abroad in numerous areas of business including consumer goods, advertising, sports goods and banking, rising from management trainee to managing director of ad agencies, the SA and UK subsidiaries of a global sports goods company and finally, head of a retail bank. His goal of wanting to be a novelist never left him during this time and upon his retirement in Durban, he bought a laptop and learnt to touch-type. A trip to Hong Kong gave him the idea for his first novel, "Icarus over Hong Kong", published by Pegasus UK in 2009. This was followed by "The Twelfth Delegate", also published by Pegasus in 2011. His third novel, "Last Train to Retreat", was published as an e-book on Kindle. These three books are all mainstream thrillers.

72

Gustav was first introduced to the Proverse Prize during a visit to Hong Kong in 2010 where his debut novel, Icarus over Hong Kong, was launched. During a dinner of the Hong Kong Writers’ Circle, Gustav met Dr Gillian Bickley, co-founder of Proverse Publishing and the Proverse Prize. Even after this meeting, Gustav wrote two more novels before he decided to enter a manuscript for the competition, motivated by a burning curiosity to see what would happen! The Proverse Prize, running for the past 7 years, is open to writers of fiction (including short stories), non-fiction (including biographies, autobiographies and memoirs), children’s books and poetry. Entrants in the past have come from all corners of the globe and have included writers (published and unpublished), artists and musicians, business people, professionals, teachers, editors, translators, researchers, journalists, screen writers, as well as TV and media writers. Manuscripts are entered without author names so the judges have no idea who wrote them (only the administrators know the identities). The actual work submitted for the Proverse Prize (unlike e.g. the Booker Prize) is necessarily unpublished and has to be in English. Gustav's novel was one of two which made it through to the end of the 2015 competition and both authors were declared winners. This, according to Proverse, was because the standard of the entries was high and they had difficulty in declaring a single winner! Gustav is unable to reveal too much with regards to his winning entry with the title and story still under wraps as the novel is being readied for publication. The book will be launched at an award function in Hong Kong in November 2016 and will then make its way to other parts of the world. He did let us in on some of the scoop...A contemporary novel with philosophical, moral

and socio-political themes – a major departure from his previous novels. The story takes place mainly in KZN (Durban, Umhlanga, Ballito) and Indonesia, with some chapters set in Namibia. LUXE Magazine will follow this story in the next issue. When he’s not writing, he follows his passion for surfing longboards, riding his mountain bike, and fishing on Namibia’s Skeleton Coast. He studied karate for 16 years attaining his third dan black belt in JKA Shotokan and instructing for many years. More sedentary passions include being sous-chef to his wife, Sarah, a superb cook who’s also knowledgeable about wine, chatting to his son who lives overseas, solving chess puzzles, and following world economics and politics.

My thoughts on...

THE T WELFTH DELEGATE Pegasus 2011

When I wake up at 3am, wondering if I will upset the household if I switch on the light to read some more, then I know that I am reading a great book. In "The Twelfth Delegate", I was introduced to a random act of violence that forever changed the course of the lives of the Joubert family. Reminded of the uncertainty and unhappiness in our current South African climate, I was swept away to the beauty and wonder of Provence, France. Or so I thought... Pierre makes the decision to move to the village of Lacombe. This leads to a chance meeting with Dr Uli Maier, humanist and free thinker. He also meets Shada, a Muslim girl from an Algerian family, proving that there is still beauty in the world. Self hatred that spills over to everyone he meets follows Hassan, Shada's brother. Hatred ripples through this novel, changing lives, without even knowing the name of the person it affects. I was reminded that the belief that the "grass is greener on the other side" is not always true. Our path may lead us in directions that we did not plan. The irony of the encounters throughout the book had me frustrated, angry, sad, happy, screaming in my head, most of all, involved... Velia van der Merwe
