WORD
God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.
FIRST READING: Acts 2:1-11
Believers are filled with the Spirit to tell God’s deeds.
Tanya Vinod, lector
1When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
5Now there were devout Jews from every people under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.”
Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

PSALM: Psalm 130
The psalm for the day is sung.
1Out | of the depths
I cry to | you, O Lord;
2O Lord, | hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my | supplication.
3If you were to keep watch | over sins, O Lord, | who could stand?
4Yet with you | is forgiveness, in order that you | may be feared.
5I wait for you, O Lord; | my soul waits; in your word | is my hope.
6My soul waits for the Lord more than those who keep watch | for the morning, more than those who keep watch | for the morning.
7O Israel, wait for the Lord, for with the Lord there is | steadfast love; with the Lord there is plen- | teous redemption.
8For the Lord shall | redeem Israel from | all their sins.

SECOND READING: Romans 8:14-17, 22-27
Dr. Marvin Wickware, lector
The Holy Spirit has made us God’s children who eagerly await the glorious future God has prepared for all of creation. While we cannot fully see what God has in store for us and creation, we eagerly anticipate it in hope. Even when we are unable to pray, the same Spirit prays for us.
14All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with Christ so that we may also be glorified with Christ.
22We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; 23and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
26Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
Word of God, word of life.
Thanks be to God.
*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
The assembly rises to welcome the gospel.
Haleluya, Puji Tuhan (Praise the Lord)
7
*Praise the Lord Words: Traditional. Music: Soahuku traditional melody, Seram Island, Indonesia; adap. Christian I. Tamaela.
*GOSPEL
John 7:37-39
Jesus describes the Holy Spirit as living water, quenching the thirst of all who come to him and filling the hearts of believers until they overflow.
The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord.
37On the last day of the festival of Booths, the great day, while Jesus was standing in the temple, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, 38and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” 39Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.
SERMON
Silence for reflection follows the sermon.
*HYMN OF THE DAY
Rev. Dr. Kim L. Beckmann
O Holy Spirit, Root of Life

+ RECOGNITION OF SERVICE +
Barry Hopkins
For over two decades, Barry Hopkins has been an integral figure at the JKM Library, culminating in his impactful role as the interim director. Throughout his tenure, Hopkins significantly contributed to the academic, intellectual, and spiritual development of the students, faculty, and staff of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and McCormick Theological Seminary. He has also supported the work of theological scholars from around the country and the world through interlibrary loan. In all of his roles, he has navigated through momentous changes and challenging times with dedication and foresight.
Hopkins joined the LSTC library staff in 2000. He has served in various roles throughout the years and has undertaken great challenges with confidence and grace. One of the most memorable times for Hopkins working at LSTC was when he and a maintenance worker, Larry Alexander, took on the monumental task to reconfigure the library's physical space by reorganizing two hundred fifty volumes.
Another defining period for Hopkins was during his tenure in the library between March 2020 and August 2021, when the COVID-19 pandemic closed the seminaries' doors. Despite the pandemic, JKM patrons still needed access to library resources to support their personal and academic pursuits. Hopkins and his colleagues rose to the occasion and made a difficult situation work so that members of our community had the opportunity to continue to consult valued materials.
In the library’s recent transition due to LSTC's relocation, Hopkins remained on staff, working with our outside consultants to determine which volumes will be retained by the JKM collection and where those volumes are most appropriately housed. He also helped plan for the year ahead and served as an advisor to our respective faculties and boards regarding the vision and strategy for JKM moving forward.
Hopkins officially retires this year, but his efforts have ensured that the legacy of JKM will continue to support theological scholarship long after.

Emilie Pulver, who served in various roles within the JKM Library, retired December 31, 2023, after nearly 40 years of service. As the library’s metadata specialist, Pulver helped shape the library's legacy through her diligence and integrity and through her support of student scholarship.
Since she first joined the JKM Library staff in 1984, Pulver earned a reputation in the library world as a beacon of meticulous curation. Having spent most of her professional time cataloging for the library, Pulver’s experiences go back to the early days of the Jesuit Krauss McCormick Library when it served three schools: The Jesuit School of Theology; the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago; and McCormick Theological Seminary. “All three schools had classrooms in the LSTC building, and the library contained books and periodicals for all three faith traditions. It was an exciting time to see scholars from those three traditions mingle,” Pulver said.
Pulver also noted that her favorite part of working at the library was cataloging the Ph.D. theses from the LSTC doctoral students. “I enjoy seeing the results of their scholarship, reading their acknowledgments, and finding out who supported them on their journey,” she recalls.
Emilie Pulver will be remembered at LSTC for her expert librarianship, kindness and support of students. Pulver's dedication to her work not only served LSTC's scholarly pursuits but also upheld the library's reputation as a trove of genuine scholarship. Her presence at the JKM Library leaves a profound impact on the academic community she served.
