Summer maybe over but lets all keep smiling !

According to official statistics Summer is over. No more warm days, no more sunshine and no chance of a barbecue. However, this is only September so do not panic we have often had some of our best weather this month, mind you it would be hard to beat those few weeks in August. The kids will be returning to school and Autumn is on our doorstep but we are not ready to stop smiling yet are we? Of course not, we are looking forward to all the good holidays Autumn –Halloween, Winter- Christmas and Spring – Easter before we return again to the warm Summer days. Until those days return lets all keep smiling enjoy our families and friends company and of course tell everyone you now to get their copy or follow us online or Facebook. We are and always will be here for you, our community. If you are involved in a community/voluntary/charitable/ sporting organisation we are here to help and promote them including their events and there never has been and never will be any charge for this service. We really appreciate the good work such organisations do in our community After two years of lockdown and Covid rampage our motto has now become “Keep smiling through” and we are committed to doing so. Our charitable organisations are back hard at work, our community and voluntary groups are back in full swing and our sporting groups (with some adjustments to their schedule) are back doing what they do best. Covid hasn’t gone away so we still need to be careful but we are learning to live with it. So lets do what we enjoy doing as the Autumn/ Winter months close in. Lets support our community, support our local groups, support our local traders, service providers and shops and support each other until the sun shines again in June, July and August next year. Oh and above all lets keep smiling!

When I do group talks, I often ask the question whether anyone’s close family or friends have been affected by cancer? I have only ever had one person say “no”. When I ask whether the same close family or friends have ever won the lotto jackpot, not surprisingly, it’s (almost) always “no”. Yet with odds of 10.7 million to 1 to win the lotto jackpot, people spend a relatively large amount of money each week on lotto (and Euromillions and scratch cards etc.) believing and hoping that it will happen to them. The same people have a 4 to 1 chance of being diagnosed with one of the Serious Illnesses covered BEFORE they are 65. We often review people’s finances and see that they have their vehicles insured, their house insured, their pets, mobile phones, lap tops and jewellery insured but not themselves! It’s not until one of these events happens that people can fully appreciate the financial loss that is suffered. An important detail is that even if people have cover in place from a few years back, they could well be paying over the odds premium wise or it may no longer be most appropriate. Take the time to check what is most appropriate for your specific circumstances.

Dave Kavanagh QFA has been advising people financially for over 25 years. For quotes or information (with no cost or obligation) he can be contacted by emailing info@financialcompanion.ie or use the contact form on www.financialcompanion. ie or @Davekav_advice on Twitter and Instagram. Combined with his previous role of gym/nutrition adviser, he regularly gives talks and workshops at seminars and events for groups, companies and government departments on financial wellbeing, positivity and motivation. As heard on RTE 2FM , LMFM and TV3.

Don’t until it’s too late

Many people are in the “it’ll never happen to me” group, when it comes to planning for events that could potentially impact finances. Let’s face it, nobody wants to think that anything “bad” will happen to them but the reality is, bad things happen whether we like it or not. The three areas that are most prevalent to this topic are, Life Cover, Serious Illness Cover and Income Protection. Of course, we would hope that we are not going to die prematurely, we are not going to get seriously ill and accident or illness will not prevent us from being able to work. Sadly, in this small country of ours, over 7,000 people die each year NOT of natural causes (under age 65), we are heading towards 43,000 new cancer cases every year (the cause of more than 50% of Serious Illness claims) and the average time off work for an income protection claim is close to 5 years!

Construction of the Coast Road -Portmarnock - Malahide by Malahide Historical Society

History

Up until the 1930s only a narrow track ran between Seabank and the Velvet Strand at Portmarnock. The track was of such concern to the local authority that it sought permission to close part of the road owing to its dangerous nature running alongside the sea cliffs. Permission was granted and the required prohibition sign was erected at both ends of the closed section. At that time it was unique in being the only public road in Ireland to be officially closed to motor traffic. In 1914 a Swords man was fined 5 shillings with 10 shillings costs for riding his motor-cycle along the prohibited road. When the sea wall at Robbs Walls suffered ‘sudden damage’ in November 1928, presumably storm damage, the Council agreed to spend £150 on a retaining wall, the contractor being Messrs. Bissett. The following year the Council accepted the tender of Patrick Bissett for the construction of a sea wall at Robbs Walls in Portland cement at a cost of £1-11-6 per cubic yard or £4-6-3 per lineal yard. Motor traffic was restricted to residents along the way and to emergency services including the clergy and local doctors. Dublin County Council agreed, in 1931, to spend £200 and employ fifteen men anRd four horses to widen the part of the road running from the baths behind the Grand Hotel to Muldowney. Some more widening was done the following year but the Council received a deputation on behalf of a number of carters using horse-drawn vehicles who had been dismissed from carting stones from Feltrim Quarry and had been substituted by motor haulage. In 1933, approval was received for the expenditure of £5,600 on the continuation of widening, new road construction, etc. on the PortmarnockMalahide road, which became the road as we know it today.

Syls Cycling Club Malahide - “100k in a day”

Cyclists are expected to have a roadworthy bike, cycling helmet, appropriate cycle clothing and cyclinginsurance from Cycling Ireland. According to Brendan Ryan, the Club’s Training and Development Officer, “The focus of this programme is to carefully guide cyclists through a training plan as it is aimed at those who are looking to re-start or continue cycling for health, fitness, recreation, commuting or to tackle a challenge or charity ride. It is a great opportunity to make new friends and get out into the fresh air” For an inactive cyclist, starting back can be a scary prospect. This easy-to-follow plan will have you confidently undertaking 60 - 70km spins, with the goal of completing 100K in a single spin by the end of the course. With the focus of putting theory into practice during cycle spins, Syls Cycling Club has successfully held different training programmes, including its highly popular “Couch To 50k” that happens every spring. Through the duration of the 100K in a day programme, cyclists should be able to:(1) Build fitness week by week (2) Increase cycling distance and ability by participating in spins with Syls CC (3) Finish the programme with a 100K spin, while having 1 or 2 coffee breaks to refuel. For course participants, the enrolment gives you Syls CC membership until the end of 2023! About the book - The Avenue - The year is 1950, World War II is over, food rationing is nearly finished and the word teenager has just been invented. There are nineteen identical yellow-brick terraced houses on one side of the Avenue and twenty on the other yet each house is a world of its own and as different from the next as the people who live in them. The people of the Avenue include a woman who defies convention, a man who confronts a despotic clergyman, an inquisitive woman who never leaves her bed, a long-lost father, a woman with a disturbing secret and a man with an empty box of chocolates. Told with insight and humour these tales of growing up, religion, marriage, emigration, mental health, widowhood and old age reminds us of the small but important moments of everyday living.‘The Avenue’ will be published and launched in the Malahide Library on the 5th October. Admission is free and open to all.

By Siobhan O’Neill White September is often the busiest month of the year for slimming and fitness clubs – for many of these businesses, it is even more busy than January! As the children go back to school and routine becomes the norm again, we start to think ahead to Christmas and the party season and the dread of the LBD (Little Black Dress!). Covid has played havoc with many of our waistlines (mine included unfortunately!) and while it’s good to focus on a healthier attitude to sweets and treats in general, instead of putting huge pressure on yourself to achieve something huge like losing a stone or two before Christmas, how about setting some smaller, more achievable goals instead? We can help! In 2018, we ran a free weight loss group on mams.ie and it was very successful. The aim was to lose half a pound a week by making small changes. Increasing your exercise, cutting down on alcohol, drinking more water, cutting down on fizzy drinks – just these changes alone can bring great results. We all supported each other and it was in a non judgemental way, which really spurred everyone on. I find that, when I want to lose some weight, small changes are the way to go. Instead of cutting out all your favourite treat foods in one go and radically changing your diet, make small changes that are more realistic. So, don’t just quit frothy coffees and a chat with the girls, instead opt for a flat white and have a glass of water on the go at all times. Sometimes, we think we’re hungry when in fact, we are just thirsty. If you fancy a scone with that coffee, earn it, by walking to the café. That way you won’t feel guilty afterwards! When it comes to weekends, go easy on yourself. You don’t have to quit all your favourite things. You can still have a take away but limit it to one a week and if you are having a glass wine, think about drinking white instead of red as its lower in calories. I love soda water with splash of lime cordial, few cubes of ice and a slice of lime, it feels like a drink but no hangover the next day! Instead of reaching for crisps, have other snacks at the ready. Mini crackers and cheese are a good option if you want something salty but don’t want to devour a tub of pringles. And popcorn is a brilliant option – just go easy on the butter. We will be restarting our mams.ie weight loss club again this September, it is free of charge for mams.ie members, all you need to do is create an account at mams.ie and then subscribe.

“Back to work, school or college after the Summer break may mean back to routine but it doesn’t have to mean back to bad habits! Autumn is the season for change and what better way to start the new school year than on a healthy note. A lot of cereal bars in shops are loaded with sugar which give an instant energy high but this is rapidly followed by an energy crash and cravings for more sweet foods. These cereal bars below are tasty but very satisfying and filling. Not to mention they are so simple to make and contain only 5 ingredients which are very commonplace in many homes. Cereal

Our mistake but it had to happen sometime we suppose!

However there is an old saying, ‘The man that never made a mistake never made anything’ and boy did we make a big one last month when a heading said Malahide United had won the AFL ..eh duh ..wrong code of football and wrong pics (The pics were of Syls GFC) so I suppose the only thing we got right was it was two Malahide clubs. So our sincere apologies to Malahide United and to Syls however we were pleasantly surprised with the hundreds of messages we got pointing out our mistake and we promise to do our best to ensure that doesn’t happen again. So here is to another 20 years before the next one and thanks to our readers for pointing it!

Many times over the last 20 years our sub editing team have spotted typos and other small grammatical errors among the thousands of pages and millions of words we have published in the 5 Local magazines across Fingal.
