The heralding of springtime with birds singing and the changing of the clocks and longer evenings annually means the emergence of dozens of community organisations engaging in their activities. Whether it is charities running fundraising events or Scouts/Guides or youth/ elderly clubs emerging from their halls, they all enjoy the sunlight. Even on the days when the sun doesn’t shine it still brightens our days early and elongates our evening pursuits. Spring flowers now adorn our gardens, window boxes and hanging baskets and brighten our areas. The springtime period therefore is the time when fun and good health is promoted, and the gloom of Autumn and Winter is dispelled as we look forward to long lazy Summer days. At this time too, groups across Fingal are readying themselves for their outdoor activities. Scouts and Guides practising tent building, sporting teams now able to train outdoors and community groups erecting gazebos and using new innovative ideas to raise money for their worthy causes. Those volunteers in such groups are now invigorated by the brighter days and longer evenings and the smiles on their faces are there for all to see. As people who worked in the community/voluntary sector for many years, we are very aware of the importance of Spring and its benefits. There is not a volunteer who does not greatly value the sense of fulfilment they feel when they achieved their goals and there is no better feeling in this world. This year with the rise in the Cost of Living it is more imperative than ever for volunteers to come forward to help in any way they can. Therefore, we ask you to enjoy the brighter days and longer evenings, but please spare a moment to think how you could help in our community. Everyone has a talent for something and every little helps to create a better place for all of us to live in. So, let us enjoy what spring has brought us and volunteer and brighten someone else’s day. You’ll love it!

Seconds Matter: Lusk CFRS Swift Response to Save Lives

In Lusk, a group of dedicated volunteers known as Lusk Community First Responders (Lusk CFR), is working to make a life-changing impact on their community. Trained to respond swiftly to specific emergency calls, their mission is clear: to reach potential life-threatening situations in the crucial minutes before the ambulance crew arrives. Connected to the National Ambulance Service Emergency Operations Centre, Lusk CFR can provide medical assistance within minutes of a 999 call, offering a lifeline to those in distress. In Ireland, 5,000 people are lost to cardiac arrest each year, 13 lives lost every day. These incidents strike without warning, affecting people in the midst of their daily routines, from homes to workplaces, shopping centres, and sports events. 70% to 80% of these cardiac arrests occur in the presence of family or friends. For every passing minute, the chances of recovery decrease by 7% to 10%. Currently, the Out-ofHospital Cardiac Arrest survival rate in Ireland is 5.2%. However, Lusk CFR aims to change this by emphasising the critical importance of swift response. Effective CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) within the first 3-5 minutes can significantly boost survival rates to 49% to 75%. While this initiative is new to Lusk, CFR schemes across Ireland, registered with the National Ambulance Service, have already proven their impact. Lusk currently has 3 public access AEDs, available 24/7 365 days a year. At the Cottage Community Centre,

Soccer Club and Centra in

CFR will continue to work with the community to increase the number of public access AEDs in the community. Lusk CFR is actively seeking volunteers, and no prior medical experience or training is necessary, as continuous training will be offered to all recruits. Additionally, Lusk

Should planning be granted procurement of works will being post the decision from An Bord Pleanala. Speaking at the Committee, Cllr O’Donoghue thanked the Lusk Sports Group for their work over the past decade to get the project ready for planning application. He stated ‘an immense amount of work has gone into getting the hub ready by the Clubs and Community Organisations over the last ten years, countless volunteer hours have already been given by all stakeholder groups on the Lusk Sports Groups and they should be really proud of sticking the course to date as the proposed facilities at the Lusk Hub will be second to none. This is a great news story for Lusk, the facilities are critically needed and this will be a flagship project for both Lusk and Fingal that I hope to champion over the coming years.”

30th anniversary of Lusk twinning with Thorigne-Fouillard in Britanny

“Lusk Twinning Association are delighted to celebrate their 30th anniversary marking when Lusk as a village was twinned with the town of Thorigne-Fouillard in Britanny. After some preliminary research and groundwork that started in 1991 the Twinning process was made official on 2nd May,1993 with the first visit of our Breton friends coming to Lusk. We take turns visiting each other on alternate years. When we visit we stay with a host family and experience their culture, this is reciprocated when they come to us. We are always accompanied by our own musicians who travel along with Irish dancers. By unique coincidence the town of Thorigne-Fouillard has a traditional music group called the Luskies and a choir called Eire D’large. We have had many wonderful evenings enjoying musical exchanges and performing together. We look forward to the arrival of our friends and continuing our friendship for many more years.”

How To Remove Stress From Your Finances

Most aspects of your life are connected to your finances, yet most people don’t take the time to plan them effectively. A couple of reasons for this: If you have a problem that needs a plumber, an electrician or a roofer, you will know about it. If you haven’t reviewed your finances for a while, you may not even be aware that you have a problem. The other reason is that some of the main aspects of financial planning are viewed as “negative”. I mean who wants to spend time considering potential occurrences like the impact of a fatality, or give thought to having sufficient income in your retirement when you haven’t reached 30 yet? This perception of “negative” is often why people subconsciously avoid the topic, often citing “not having enough time” as a reason. The same reason explains why people spend regularly on things like the lotto, believing they can win the jackpot, at odds of 10.7million to 1. The same people’s odds of being diagnosed with one of the specified illnesses covered, is 1 in 4 (before age 65!) yet they say “that’ll never happen to me”. This is a natural desire for something very positive to happen and for something negative not to happen. However, these everyday occurrences will happen whether or not someone has the right planning in place. One hour is 4% of your day. Spending that much time even once per year can be hugely

beneficial. You get the peace of mind that you are up to date with your planning. You get the reassurance that anything you have in place is the most appropriate for your current circumstances. You also get the satisfaction that you are not overpaying for something and are getting the best value. Suddenly, the mystery and uncertainty are removed, along with the stress and anxiety often associated with them. In all my years of doing reviews, I’ve never heard anyone regret taking time to go through their finances, but I’ve heard plenty regret not going through them when something unexpected crops up. Remove “money worries”. Make the time.

Lusk Action Group working hard

Last month, Fingal County Council announced the long-awaited plans for the sports and recreational hub. This comes after more than ten years of work and commitment by the Lusk Sports Group (previously known as Lusk Sports 2020) We would like to thank them for their patience, hard work and dedication over this time. A meeting was held to discuss final concerns with FCC, and planning permission was lodged by FCC to An Bord Pleanála for the allweather soccer pitch and four lane running track. Members of the public will be able to submit observations at a cost of €200. Works are hoped to commence on the project next year. In April, a meeting was held between key community groups and developers McGarrell Reilly. The agenda covered the progress and plans for completing the Lusk Village Quarter, a vital component of our community’s growth and enhancement. Key aspects such as establishing a creche,

pub/restaurant, public square, and additional retail spaces were addressed. These amenities are essential for our growing population. McGarrell Reilly wished to highlight their own contributions, including the Soccer Clubhouse and playing Facilities, Rathmore Park (the hub), Ring Road development and the Design and Connection of an improved Lusk Sewage System. Additionally, they highlighted efforts to source school sites, establish playgrounds, and progress on the Village Quarter, all integral to enhancing the quality of life in Lusk. Lusk Action Group highlighted their many concerns regarding the delays in the delivery of amenities in Lusk Village Quarter. For further information on this, please see our Facebook page. Plans are well underway for Lusk Summer Festival which will take place on Saturday 22 nd June in Orlynn Park Green. We are looking for new members for our organising committee. Dockrell asks your support to bring new energy to Fingal County Council

With only weeks to go until polling day, I want to take this opportunity to set out the areas I will focus on if fortunate enough to represent Lusk on Fingal County Council. I would be very grateful for your support on June 7th. If elected, I would work full time for the people of Lusk and always be responsive should you need assistance with any matter. In summary, I want: Better Local Amenities - One of my core ambitions is to have better dining facilities in Lusk and more inclusive indoor community spaces that cater for people of all ages (including youth clubs and our own Men’s Shed and ICA group). Better local amenities would benefit all residents of Lusk and would only involve a relatively modest capital investment from our wellresourced local authority. Better Development - Lusk needs more balanced development, and if elected I will fight hard as a councillor for better ways to build our community. This will include ensuring that planning applications for housing

developments should only be approved when there is adequate community infrastructure included (and this community infrastructure should be built in tandem with houses, not after houses are built). Large scale housing developments must include childcare, retail and dining facilities. Better Connectivity - My priority is to do more to improve our roads, footpaths, and green spaces to ensure they are protected and maintained to a highest standard. The capability within Fingal County Council is there and I will push hard to put in place an ambitious programme of work to upgrade some of our roads and footpaths. For example, a footpath on Minister’s Road linking Dun Emer (and Lusk village) to the R132 is badly needed. Similarly, the Blake’s Cross junction must be upgraded now that the Council has committed to doing so. If I have your support, I will work hard for you and bring new energy to Fingal County Council.

Lusk AC – A step closer to an 8 Lane track

Club members were thrilled to hear the news that we are a step closer to having an 8 lane athletics track to train and compete on. After many years of working with Fingal County Council and our neighbouring sports clubs in Lusk we can see light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you to our club’s committee who have worked long and hard in pursuit of athletic facilities in Lusk. Congratulations to our recent Fit4Life group who graduated with the Windmill 5k at Garristown. Watch out for a new group starting in September. The club had over 60 athletes in action at the Windmill 10k which also included the truly wonderful Dublin 10k championships. It was a successful day with a huge haul of medals being won in age and team categories.

Junsa Taekwondo Club News

Spring has sprung for our younger competitors

We recently attended a tournament in Dublin which saw our younger students showing of their sparring skills, while not complete beginners the nerves still showed a little, but they overcame their fears to show exactly what they are capable of.

At Junsa, we believe that gradually introducing our students to the competition side of our Olympic sport is the key. Working alongside other clubs from Taekwondo Ireland we can run tournaments for all levels, from introductory level right up to international level athletes. Please have a look at our up-and-coming young athletes.

Our more advanced competitors, Conor, Ethan and Darragh (centre) all show great performances. Jack (L) and Fionn (R) are now Taekwondo official centre referees and corner judges. Peter (right) over came his first defeat and went on to win his second match. Patrick (right) and Peter (left) displaying their silverware with their coach Stuart.
