How many times have you walked down your local street or local estate and wondered ‘Why isn’t there more going on here?’ or ‘Why isn’t there enough for the kids to do?’ These are questions we all ask ourselves on occasions and more often than not, there could be a lot more going on if we had more people willing to volunteer with local groups.
There are so many wonderful voluntary organisations out there in Fingal and the work that they do is invaluable to their respective communities. From sporting groups, walking groups, youth groups, Men’s Sheds, ICA groups, Comhaltas groups and the many, many more clubs, societies and organisations – local people rely heavily on them to make a difference to their daily lives.
But these organisations can only survive with the selfless work their volunteers provide who give up their own time after work and on weekends to make our lives more fulfilled. We love seeing more for us to do in our communities and are always looking for something new and exciting; just remember there would hardly be anything to do without these voluntary organisations and their volunteers.
As a community-based magazine group we really do deeply appreciate all out contributors and advertisers without whom the magazines would not be possible. But we also appreciate all the great work that is being done in Fingal by the community/voluntary and charitable sector. We also appreciate the work of carers who sometime are unpaid and to be honest cannot be paid enough for the love and care they give.
So all we can say is get involved in your community. Whether that is in sport, which helps our mental and physical health. Or maybe in one of the many wonderful voluntary, or charitable groups we have in Fingal and do your bit to show you appreciate all that life has given you. The rewards you will get cannot be measured in coins and notes but will be measured in the good mental and physical health you personally will gain from such work. Have a wonderful June!

Peninsula Pacers go from Country to City!
The Pacers had a great day out in Co. Leitrim in April and it was helped by great sunny weather!
We left Donabate Train station about 9am & returned before 11pm! Our itinerary was breakfast in Connolly Station, then a 2hr journey by train to Carrick-on-Shannon. We were then met by the Links Bus and brought to Leitrim Village where we set out on an 8km walk along the beautiful Blue Way Canal to Jinny’s famous cafe near Drumshambo where coffee & cake
awaited us!
We took the Links Bus back from outside the door to the Leitrim Village Inn where we were well fed & watered before taking the next Links Bus back to Carrick, where we caught the train back to Connolly & took the train back to Donabate! A long day but a great day, with a good walk, rests, refreshments & craic!
The May Walk was to Poolbeg Lighthouseled by Carolyn - a great time had by all!
The June walk is on Saturday 22nd. Organised by Carolyn & Breda - we will go from Northstrand to Phibsboro - do the BasinGrangegorman -Stoneybatter - Smithfield and the Dublin Market. There will be a few good stops and dinner at the end, here’s hoping for blistering sunshine!

So
By Dave Kavanagh
There are two important aspects of both having and needing mortgage protection life cover. Firstly, there are those who have had mortgages for a number of years with mortgage protection life cover done in conjunction with it. For these people, it is well worth checking the current level of cover and remaining term on their mortgage protection and the same on their mortgage balance and term, to make sure there is sufficient cover. For example, in 2020 during the severe Covid lockdowns, many mortgage holders availed of a 6 month payment break. During this period, their mortgage protection cover will have continued to reduce, while their mortgage balances may have stayed level, or even increased if interest was capitalised. This could mean a shortfall in the event of a claim, meaning that the mortgage does not get fully cleared and there is a balance owing.
The second aspect to consider, is people who are planning to get a mortgage soon, or in the near future. They have saved regularly to build a deposit, maintained stable employment, avoided taking out new loans (and made sure any existing or previous loan obligations were paid in full and on time), conducted their current accounts efficiently, etc. but sadly, they don’t get to proceed with their house/apartment purchase (certainly
not in the time frame they wanted to) because they cannot get their mortgage protection life cover accepted. This could be due to their current or past medical history, or something simple like they have been referred for a test that has not yet been done. It’s why many are arranging their mortgage protection cover well in advance of drawing down their mortgage. Once in place, any new medical issues are not relevant. It can even save them money, as 36 years paying a cheaper premium (before another birthday has passed) is cheaper than 35 years at the higher premium.

Active Age for All Bealtaine Miscellany Commnuity News
A Bealtaine Miscellany was held in the Donabate Portrane Community Centre on Tuesday 30th April organised by Mary Farrell and Muireann Conway on behalf of Active Age for All and a very enjoyable event it was.
Following an introduction on the origins and customs of Bealtaine by Carolyn Smith there was an abundance of music and singing provided by the Cantoiri, Fran & Co, the Ukulele group and Ed and Muireann. There was a lovely reading by Enid Hughes from the Chinkwell Writers Group and Sybil Harte
Weir gave us a rendition of her own composition the ‘Coast of Fingal’ as well as ‘Noreen Bawn’. A feast of entertainment followed by tea and coffee and lots of home bakes, what a lovely way to spend a Tuesday morning !
Active Age for All classes have now finished for the summer but we will be back in action in September, look out for our information day in the Mall on the 30th August. Wishing you all a happy and healthy summer, we look forward to seeing you all, and a few new friends, in September!

Fallen Kingdom Rises: A Review of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”
By Jack Shanley
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” picks up decades after the events of “War for the Planet of the Apes” with Caesar, the wise chimpanzee leader, a revered memory. Humanity has been ravaged by a virus, leaving a power vacuum filled by various ape communities. Enter Noa, a young gorilla raised on Caesar’s ideals of peace between species. His world is shattered by a brutal attack, setting him on a path of vengeance that unveils a brewing conflict within the ape society.
The film excels in its worldbuilding. Gone are the lush, green landscapes; a sense of decay hangs over the overgrown ruins of human civilization. The ape settlements, particularly the technologically advanced underwater city, showcase the evolution of ape society.
The visuals are stunning, with sweeping vistas and detailed set design making the post-apocalyptic world both believable and captivating.
While the story lacks the emotional depth of the previous trilogy, it compensates with thrilling action sequences. Noa’s journey is punctuated by intense chases and battles, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. The film also delves into themes of legacy and
the struggle to maintain peace in a world yearning for conflict. However, “Kingdom” stumbles slightly with its pacing. The middle act drags a bit, with some repetitive plot points. The film also throws in a few convenient plot devices to propel the story forward.
Despite these minor stumbles, the film shines in its central performance by Owen Teague as Noa. He portrays the character’s rage and grief with raw intensity, making Noa a compelling protagonist.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” might not reach the heights of its predecessors, but it’s a worthy successor that expands the franchise’s universe. With its stunning visuals, thrilling action, and thought-provoking themes, it’s a compelling addition to the “Planet of the Apes” saga, leaving viewers eager for the next chapter in this ever-evolving ape kingdom. In all truth I’d recommend checking out “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” and see what you think of it, I shall give it a score of Four Stars. You can watch it at your local cinema today.

A reflection for Father’s Day
By Jon Kavanagh
I recently caught sight of myself in a shop mirror. Oh, the shaved head, beard and glasses were a decent attempt at a disguise. But it was him – my late father. It’s not just the physical resemblance; I have inherited a few of his traits including: the coordination of Mr Bean, the patience of Gordon Ramsey and a morbid fear of change. Hugh Leonard summed up many fathers when he said, “Da spent his life sitting on a bed of briars, afraid to move in case someone took his seat.” He was old in mind and body at my current age. Decades of braving the elements as a farm labourer; sweltering whilst picking tomatoes in glass houses close to Swords or freezing as he sat on a potato harvester near Donabate village where he purchased offal in a butcher’s shop.
Back then everyone had a defined role. His was to bring home the wage packet on Friday evening. Born, as World War One raged in 1917, he got a basic primary school education before embarking on a lifetime in the fields of Fingal. He had a simple life with few luxuries; living in primitive rented accommodation and traveling on a bone shaker bicycle. He owned two suits, a good one for Sundays, and another one for workdays. When the good one became a bit shabby it was demoted to weekdays and a new one was bought for Sundays. He never took a holiday, but opted instead to take two weeks extra pay each year. We always looked forward to the “holiday money”. He didn’t take a day off for my confirmation but choose to show his love by buying me my first wristwatch.
His downtime was spent tending a large vegetable and fruit garden where Adam and Eve wouldn’t have looked out of place, cycling long distances to visit extended family and friends and watching western movies on TV. On Sunday afternoons he would visit the local for a couple of pints. If he could board the Tardis and return to earth in 2024, he would assume he was on another planet. Although over a quarter of a century has come and gone since he passed, he still plays a part in my life. He was a good man, who did the best he could with limited resources. One wonders what he might have achieved if opportunity had knocked on his door.

Busy times for DP Crossroads Campaign
It’s been another busy month for the committee of the DP Crossroads Campaign for a Cultural & Youth Center on the Peninsula. Following on from their meetings with FG, SF and Green TDS, they met with Duncan Smith and Darragh O’Brien this month. Both TDs commended the group’s work and strongly supported their campaign. Following this the group met Senior FCC officials and local Councilors to discuss their recently submitted business case. The business case outlines the clear need for this facility and provides solid suggestions on how it would be planned, constructed and operated.
Unfortunately, the council officials are unwilling to move from their previous position that Donabate-Portrane residents use existing facilities. The group are disappointed but vow to continue the campaign and plan to
re-engage with the new council following local elections in June. Meanwhile, the DP Crossroads Team held an Information Day in the Town Center on 26th April. Members of the committee were available to discuss all aspects of their campaign in particular the planning proposals for the peninsula and population forecasts. They had detailed information on how the town has grown over the past twenty years and illustrated the lack of accompanying community infrastructure. They had some fun displays which allowed residents an opportunity to indicate where they think the site for the center should be. Residents were also given an opportunity to sign the groups petition in support of the new facility and if you missed your chance you can go to https://www.change.org/p/provision-of-an-artscultural-youth-multifunctional-community-center-in-donabate

“Music Makers” in the Parish Hall
Well some good news - the Parish Hall has received a generous Activity Grant from FCC. Our Senior Community Officer, Rafe Costigan, was most helpful with advice in this regard. The equipment includes a full sound system for Music Makers - microphones & stands, mixer desk, speakers, monitors & other accessories.
It is hoped that, with help & support, this equipment will be available to over 18s who play or study music. This will take place on some Fridays or occasionally on a Saturday or Sunday if there is some free time available.

year in Newbridge on Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th at the annual “Flavours of Fingal” festivalwhat an honour for the local lads - please support the whole event & such talent.
At present young & older! people need places to practice & then perform. There are very few suitable places, except your garage if you are lucky enough to have one or failing that your bedroom! - nowhere with the good acoustics of the Parish Hall in Donabate.
We wish to thank the following people for their advice and assistance with this positive projectIan Butler, Chairperson of Leithinis CCÉ, Colm Slattery, Manager of The Sound House Venue in Dublin, and Sean O’Leary, lead guitarist with ‘Harvest’ (Neil Young Tribute Band)
The Parish Hall will be taking expressions of interest for booking for the coming year in the next week or two; as we must make plans to try and accommodate our present users and the increasing number of new enquiries we are receiving. Busy Summer Ahead for Men’s Shed
The coming summer promises to be a busy time for Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed.
Work at our plots at Turvey Allotments has reached fever pitch tending to the vegetables and installing adjustments to our polytunnel to improve ventilation in the expected (hoped for!) hot weather.
Fresh from their successful gigs for the launch in April of the Memory Cafè in the Community
Centre and a gig last month for clients in St. Ita’s Hospital, the Men’s Shed music group, Gerry & the Plonkers, is preparing for a gig at the Sea Scouts’ Open Day later this month. We are delighted to show our appreciation for the Scouts allowing the Men’s Shed to use their den.
Plans are being finalised for our visit later this month to 14 Henrietta Street, the social history
museum of Dublin life.
Also our regular weekly activities of exercise classes, croquet at Newbridge House, music jam session and tea-and-chat get-together continue.

No new site identified for Arts Cultural and Youth Facility
Fingal County Council has been urged to follow through on finding a new location for an Arts, Cultural and Youth Facility that is badly needed in the area with ever-increasing population numbers in the area of Donabate Portrane.
With 31% of the local population under the age of 19, and a projected increase in total population numbers expected to grow in the area to 20,000 by the year 2030, calls are being made for FCC to provide the new facility.
Speaking about the issue, Donabate Portrane Local Representative Corina Johnston (LAB) said FCC stated that the existing Community Centre could cater for the current needs of people in the area, something she strongly disagrees with.
“FCC stated at a recent follow up meeting with the Crossroads group that the additional community requirements could be met in the Community Centre when the Library is relocated to the Credit Union site. This proposal is unacceptable as it will not meet the needs of an expanding population of Donabate.”
“The LAP has an objective to provide a Multifunctional Community Facility
which the Council seem intent to renege upon. It seems Donabate can have the 4000 houses but not the infrastructure, a situation that we cannot accept. We must demand infrastructure in line with development and a facility that caters for our youth population,” she said.
Despite the suggestion of a new location proposed on the Tilberry Site on the New Road, FCC stated there was ‘other plans’ for the site, something that has worried Cllr Johnston on the Council’s commitment to the Local Area Plan.
“I am deeply concerned that this objective in the LAP is being reneged upon. What is the purpose of public consultation when the council seems intent on reneging on this objective. If this site is not delivered while the land is still not built upon it may never happen. Having spoken to many residents throughout the peninsula they are not prepared to accept that this much needed community facility is being reneged upon. I intend to pursue this to a successful conclusion if elected on 7th June,” she added.

The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival 2024
Preparations are well under way for the annual Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival in September. This year the festival starts on Thursday September 12th, and over the following 10 days the peninsula will be buzzing with a full timetable of activities to satisfy all cultural appetites.
The Bleeding Pig Cultural festival has been running for more than 10 years now, and is getting bigger and better every year, and this year promises to be no different.
The fun starts on Thursday 12th September with some ceol agus craic in the Brook Pub in Portrane, led by renowned Piper Eamonn Galldubh agus a chairde, and featuring members of Ceomhaltas Leithinis.
The organisers are very grateful to Mick and Bríd Moynihan at the Brook for hosting the launch. The 2024 festival will feature all the usual favourites including:
Workshops for Adults and Children; Gala Concert; Mol an Oige; Art and Photograph Exhibition; Short Film Festival; Walks and Talks; Any Voice open mic; Short plays from the Dramatic Society; Sing-a-Long; PizzaTrad with complimentary pizza from DoughBox; September Miscellany; and plenty more.
Hunt, Expoloration Dome Planetarium experience, and more.
In an effort to highlight some local history, this year the festival will feature a forum, interviewing and chatting with some local residents who grew up on the peninsula, sharing their memories of Donabate and Portrane in times gone by.
After the festival, on Sunday 29th September, the Dublin Orchestral Players will visit the
Parish Hall to perform a narrated production of Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev. This much-loved orchestral work is an age-old crowdpleaser and promises entertainment for music-lovers of all ages.
Keep an eye on the festival Social Media platforms, Facebook, Instagram and Website for more details about all of the events.
The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival is always seeking new recruits to help with the arrangements and the events. If you would like to join the committee, or help out at any festival event, please contact Eilish McDermott on 087-7911833.

Time to treat the Dads this Father’s Day!

For hampers, whether sweets, craft beers, wine or a picnic hamper of yummy treats, Hampers & Co. has a huge range to choose from, starting at €12.50 for their retro sweet hamper!
Despite the warmer weather, mornings and evenings are chilly and Irish company 4THArq has a wonderful range of Unisex joggers and sweatshirts; perfect for gifting Dads. We particularly love the stone collection. See www.4tharq.com.
Airmid shaving sets, made with essential oils, help keep Dads skin soft and smooth.
Tipperary Crystal has cool Dad gifts like sunglasses, socks, wallets, hats & more. Malena Shirts are brilliant – with a hidden zip behind the buttons, they give a streamlined look. Marathons, Meets and Medals
It’s been a busy time in LSA. Many of our adult members represented us at the Great Limerick Run, the Belfast Marathon, and the Drogheda 10k. In Track and Field our athletes have had a great start to their season in Schools Athletics and Dublin Leagues. Meanwhile we have also had athletes compete in Irish Mountain Running events.
Our Juvenile athletes had excellent performances at the North Leinster Schools Championships with a great haul of medal for our Juveniles who went on to compete at the Leinster Schools Athletics Championships. Our athletes secured top 6 places, winning valuable team points for their schools (Donabate Community College and Loreto Secondary School Balbriggan).
The Dublin Athletics League series is well
underway. Our Under 16 athletes competed in the Juvenile League and our older teenagers and adults took part in the Dublin Graded Meets. We were particularly proud of the success of our Competition group athletes who train with coach Gerry Ronan.
Although Donabate isn’t known for hills, one of our athletes has had great success at Irish Mountain Running events. Under 19 Sinead Farrell has been selected to represent Ireland at the European Athletics Off-Road running event in Annecy, France following qualification at the Seefin Trials in Co. Limerick. Sinead also won the recent IMRA Leinster League Race at Argillan Demesne, Skerries, whilst Under 12 athlete Kate Jones was 3rd in a shorter race at the same event.
We are looking forward to welcoming 150 young athletes to our 2024 Summer Camp in July. Our sincere thanks to St Pats GAA for offering us the use of their grounds for our camp. Thanks also to our volunteer coaches who give us their time to provide three days of fun-filled activity and athletics.
We always welcome new members and volunteers. If you would like to get involved please contact us - details below:
