Loosen our belts a little and have a wonderful Christmas! We in Europe are living through strange times with the war in Ukraine and the ever-increasing

problems caused by global warming with storm after storm coming our way this winter. However, that does not mean we have to tighten our belt too tight on the approach to Christmas. Far from it, November should be the time for us all, especially families, to seek out and find bargains not

only as Christmas presents but also those things that are necessary for everyday living. One thing for us to remember is that we do not always have to shop at the huge big stores in the city and

many bargains can be found in our very own local retail outlets. This helps not only the owners but the staff who are our neighbours and friends. It is also a way of involving all the family as

you spend the day shopping in your local area and you don’t have to wait on the bus or queue in traffic. The advantage of shopping for presents now is also that we will save that little extra that

will help with our energy costs which have been rising in recent months. This is also the time of

year when we should keep an eye on our elderly friends and neighbours and make sure they have

all their needs. Even a quick call into them for a chat means so much to those who live alone and who knows they may need you to fetch a wee message when you are there. Some may say that is for the Christmas period but remember it is less than 7 weeks now until Christmas Day so our Yuletide period has begun. Remember the essence of Community is to work together for the

betterment of each of us and what better time to do it than now in the lead up to Christmas. This November, stay warm, stay safe and look after yourselves and each other. The Locals Team.

Johnston welcomes support for Donabate Cultural, Arts and Youth facility Corina Johnston Area Representative said; “I am delighted that the provision of a much needed Cultural, Arts and Youth facility was endorsed at our recent well attended public meeting held by Duncan Smith TD and I in Donabate. At the meeting we outlined that the Local Area Plan provides for 4000 homes with the population to exceed 20,000 in the next 10 years with no indoor community facility for the growing Cultural, Arts and Youth Groups. These groups have no permanent home to support their growing numbers and activities with no stage, inadequate parking facilities, no facility for permanent exhibitions or storage of equipment. “Johnston continued; “A number of Crosscare youth workers addressed the meeting and confirmed that they have no permanent home to provide the vital youth services needed in Donabate. According to Census 2022 31% of the Donabate population is under 19 years with 41% aged under 30. Given the huge youth population with an increase in anti-social behaviour it is imperative that a permanent youth facility is included in such a facility.”

Men’s Shed Perform at Active Age for All Positive Aging Event

Last month, a group of musicians from Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed, jokingly christened Gerry and the Plonkers! by one member, played a short set at the Positive Aging event organised by Active Age for All in Donabate Portrane Community and Leisure Centre. The event also included other music and readings. The Men’s Shed choice of songs, hits from the 50s and 60s, reflected the age of the musicians 4

DONABATE LOCAL-NOVEMBER 2023

and most of the audience. The well-attended event was enjoyed by all. And to confirm the wide range of interests covered by the Men’s Shed, we also had a visit to Dáil Eireann. A full report and photos of this will be available for the next issue of Donabate/Portrane Local. If you are interested in joining us, please contact our PRO, Jim, on 086-3694316.

Johnston continued;” it was great to see so many people and especially our young people enthusiastically addressing the meeting in support of this multi-functional facility in Donabate. The Local Area Plan provides for a community facility on lands at Ballymastone, the provision of a community/cultural/exhibition and performing Arts centre for Donabate- Portrane and encourages the development of multi - functional community buildings.” Johnston concluded;” it now appears that the people of the Donabate Peninsula will get the housing units but not the Purpose Built Cultural and Community facility. The meeting soundly rejected this proposition with a committee set up to commence a campaign for this facility. The first priority is to secure a site in the Ballymastone/ Corballis area. A Motion will be submitted to the next council meeting (hopefully a cross party one) on this issue. . A local authority site needs to be identified for this purpose before all the suitable land either secures planning permission or is built upon.”

Interview with Jake Carter - Star of Beauty and the Beast at the new Lark Concert Hall Balbriggan, Dec 5th-30th

(Q) What were you like as a kid? (A) As a kid I was very lucky that my parents let me try many things. I was always trying something new, whether it was guitar, drums, piano, singing or dancing. I played the fiddle from a young age and played in the local Irish centre in Liverpool. We would compete every year in the fleadhs and travel to Ireland. As I got a little bit older, I decided I wanted to play guitar and have done so ever since the age of 10. My brother Nathan was a huge influence on me growing up. When he started gigging, I was always with him, this is how I first became interested in performing - the rest is history. (Q) Are you looking forward to starring in the new Beauty and The Beast Panto at The Lark Balbriggan throughout December? (A) I can’t wait to be playing the Beast in The Lark’s first ever pantomime. It’s such an honour for me to be included in the cast for this production in such an amazing, brand new, state of the art venue. I love the story and grew up watching Beauty and the Beast, I’m very happy to be doing my first production of this amazing story. 6

DONABATE LOCAL-NOVEMBER 2023

(Q) What’s your favourite thing to do in your spare time? (A) In my spare time when I’m not in the studio, performing or song writing, I love chilling with Lenny my dog and travelling around with him. I try to get back to Liverpool every chance I can get to see friends and family and often take Lenny with me. (Q) What’s your favourite food? (A) Favourite food has to be a Christmas dinner! Can’t be beaten! (Q) What’s one of your happiest memories? (A) One of my happiest memories has to be winning Dancing with the Stars in 2018. This was a huge achievement for me as I’d only moved over to Ireland in 2017 and it was a huge boost for everything in my career. Another huge achievement for me was playing a headline show in Dublin’s Vicar Street. (Q) What’s your favourite film and why? (A) Favourite films are the Harry Potter movies and my favourite one is probably Goblet of Fire. I watch all of the films at least once, every year. (Q) If you had to swap places with anyone for

one day, who would it be and why? (A) Completely random, but I would swap places with someone out of the Liverpool football team, probably Trent Alexander Arnold. Always been a big Liverpool supporter and would love to see what life is like on match day. (Q) You can invite four people (dead or alive) to your dinner party, who would they be and why? (A) Paul McCartney, John Lennon - both grew up around the corner from me and I would love to hear stories about their life growing up. Juergen Klopp - would love to chat to him about Liverpool and football in general. Peter Kay loved watching his DVDs growing up. He’s one of my favourite comedians and I imagine he’d be great craic at a dinner party. (Q) What else is happening in Jake Carter’s world in the coming months? (A) I have a brand-new single coming out called Milk &; Honey which I can’t wait to release. I also have a 5 track EP which I’ll be releasing at the start of next year. I am also announcing some brand-new live shows with my band in the coming weeks including a Dublin date which I can’t for! Contact us: communitylocalseditor@gmail.com

Finance

If you rent you should know this By Dave Kavanagh Those that rent their accommodation privately, compared to home owners, can be a lot more vulnerable. Apart from the obvious points, like rents being increased or having to move out if a property is being sold, there are other potential events that could prove problematic for renters. As we saw in the early part of the pandemic, where many people’s incomes were drastically reduced, those with mortgages were permitted to avail of “payment breaks” with minimal effort. Unfortunately, those renting do not usually have the flexibility of this option. When someone cannot work due to illness or injury, they may suffer a loss of income, either immediately or after a short period, resulting in the inability to pay rent. This could lead to eviction and all of the problems associated with it. While those renting may not have been exposed to the kind of financial advice as someone going through the mortgage process, there are still safeguards that can be put in place. One option is Income Protection, paying them a portion of their income if they were unable to work due to illness

or injury. This could be the difference between affording rent or being evicted. Something not often considered by renters is Life Cover. If one of a couple renting passed away, this could allow the surviving partner (or family) to purchase their own home immediately without the need for a mortgage. Similarly, Serious Illness Cover could pay out a tax-free lump sum on diagnosis of one of the illnesses covered, giving another layer of financial security. Better to consider these options earlier rather than later.

Laudato Si’ - Faith and Ecology unite Gubbio is a town in Umbria, Italy, nestled in the foothills of the Apennines. It’s peaceful and picturesque now, but once in the 1200s it was terrorised by a wolf that killed any of the residents that ventured outside of the town walls. Saint Francis of Assisi was asked to intercede on behalf of the residents and famously made a pact with the wolf that if the residents of the town fed the wolf it would stop killing. The wolf indicated its agreement by placing its large paw in Saint Francis’ hand. Thereafter, the wolf lived quietly with the villagers and they fed him and cared for him. The point of the story was that mankind needs to live in harmony with nature and that when the two are not in synch mankind suffers. Today the proverbial wolf at our door in Donabate and Portrane as coastal communities is climate change and also the broader issue of the ecological devastation that has been wrought on our common home. Pope Francis has tried to emulate

his namesake by making climate change, ecological issues and care for the poor central to his pontificate. One key action was the publication of his encyclical whose title borrowed from Saint Francis’ words and was entitled Laudato Si’ - care for our common home” and Laudato Si’ calls on people to recognize the urgent need for ecological conversion and sustainable living. In our own community the call in Laudato Si’ has been answered by the establishment of a group in the Parish of Donabate, Portrane and Balheary dedicated to helping achieve Pope Francis’ ecological vision in the parish and wider community. Father Pat Reilly, P.P. who convened the group said “ For ecological conversion to take place we all need to think using our hearts as well as our heads.” The group has launched an initial plan with actions for our parish in the key areas highlighted in Laudato Si’. Details are available on the parish website. The group welcomes new members and more details can be obtained by emailing laudatosi2023@yahoo.com

D/ P DRAMATIC SOCIETY PRESENTS “A GALWAY GIRL” AND “BEDTIME STORY” Donabate Portrane Dramatic Society is delighted to announce the upcoming performances of two Irish plays from the 23rd to the 26th of November 2023 in Donabate Parish Hall. “A Galway Girl” directed by Aengus Gordon and Áine Dilleen is a one-act play by Geraldine Aron about the life of a rural Irish wife in the 1950s. Maisie and her husband Dermot. Sitting at opposite ends of a table and rarely addressing each other directly they recollect moments of their married life in London. The anecdotes they relate are both humorous and heartbreaking. Their story is filled with disagreement and bickering but also loving moments and affection. “Playing the part of Maisie gives me an insight into the strength and courage of women of that generation in Ireland, who under an austere Catholic regime, rendered it impossible for women to leave violent and unhappy marriages”, said Christina Fahy, former member of the society and who is back on stage this season playing the part of Maisie. The second play is “Bedtime story”, directed by Lisa Buckley. This one-act comedy, written by Sean O’Casey in 1951, depicts the odd things and misfortunes that may happen to young Catholic bachelor John Jo who has just spent the night with seductive Angela in his Dublin lodging. Full of remorse and afraid of ruining his reputation

John Jo finds himself in a situation with which his conscience cannot cope. The play bursts with farcical elements, dark humour and sharp social satire. On stage there will be seen some familiar talents but also some first time actors with the society, while behind the scenes a production team has been assembled to ensure that every other aspect is well looked after when bringing the plays to life on stage. Mícheál O’Dea, long-time member, actor and producer of the society is delighted to be back in the production team after a small break: “I am looking forward to co-producing these two one acts plays with some new directors and actors alongside Italian production manager Valentina Falcone”. Tickets cost €12 per person and can be purchased online on Eventbrite.ie or at the door. Donabate Portrane Dramatic Society is also extending an invitation to all people in the community to become a patron of the society and support the local arts. The annual fee for patronage is €60 per person and it includes two tickets for their biannual productions along with light refreshments. If you want to become a member or a patron of DPDS do not hesitate to contact donabateportrane.drama@gmail. com. Donabate Tidy Towns rewarded for their great efforts

It was a proud day for Donabate Tidy Towns when it was recently announced that we reached 2nd place in our category and 12th in the whole of Dublin. We applied for the Tidy Towns competition a number of months ago hoping to get some useful feedback from experienced adjudicators in terms of projects completed and work projects we could complete over the next year. We did not expect to score so well and needless to say we were overjoyed with the results and the feedback. Of course, there were plenty of suggestions and ideas for the village which we look forward to planning and implementing over the coming weeks and months as some of the Contact us:communitylocalseditor@gmail.com

projects require more planning and funding than others. We would like to thank the volunteers who helped and participated in the Tidy Towns activities over the last year. Without your hard work and dedication none of the completed projects and progress around the village would have been possible and this was reflected in the report. Quite a few of the volunteers often do so very quietly and in their own time and do not seek any gratitude for the work that they do but we would like to extend our thanks to each one of them. We will be holding our rescheduled AGM at the Donabate Portrane Community Centre on Tuesday the 24th of October at 8.30pm. We will

reflect on all the hard work that has been done by both the committee and volunteers over the last year, plans for the coming year and we hope to share these with you in due course. We would be really interested in hearing everyone’s thoughts and ideas for the village or for your own area/ estate. Tidy Towns would be happy to work with you and provide as many resources as possible to help you with any projects you had in mind. We would also like to hear how Donabate Tidy Towns could bring in new volunteers and support the existing volunteers more. We hope to see as many people there as possible. Tradfest in Fingal for Donabate Parish Hall

Last year Tradfest came to Fingal as it extended & embraced not only Dublin City & Temple bar but Dublin County & Fingal. The launch was held in the Seamus Ennis Centre in the Naul and then Tradfest put on other wonderful Trad Music events in Malahide & Swords Castles. This year they are celebrating the roots of Irish Trad Music by also hosting events in smaller and unique buildings and locations in Fingal, like the Parish Hall in Donabate. Traditional music came from Homes, Halls & Hostelries! or Parlours, Parish & Pubs! In list of venues, we are in there with Dublin Castle & The Button Factory! Donabate Parish Hall is one of these special places, beautiful and old world and which thanks to the assistance of FCC Community Dept. has fantastic acoustics which enable it to be used as a

great venue. Martin Harte a Parish man, CEO of Temple Bar Company is the driving force behind bringing Tradfest out to Fingal and Donabate Parish Hall. We are steeped to have Gerry O’ Connor another Parish man and legendary world-famous Banjo player perform two separate concerts in the Parish Hall - lunchtime & late afternoon - on Sunday 28th January 2024. This is a very exciting happening for the Peninsula & Donabate Parish Hall & Tradfest so check out their website for all events & booking for other venues in Fingal & Temple bar - it is a great festival and we are truly delighted to be a part of it. Nuttily Nutritious Christmas Pudding!! “This is a tasty twist on the traditional Christmas pudding. It is packed full of ‘nuttylicious’ nutrition and because it is quite rich and decadent, you will find yourself feeling satisfied after 1 slice! Don’t forget to be active over the festive season too, whether it’s dancing, walking, running or ice-skating that floats your boat, be sure to fit in the fitness as much as the food!

Nuttily nutritious Christmas pudding!! Ingredients:

Makes 8x100g servings

• 200g Almonds • 100g Pecan nuts • 100g Dates • 100g Sultanas • 80g Dried figs • 150g almond butter (or just use

whatever nut butter you have, better if it is smooth) • 30g honey • 50g cocoa powder • Juice of 1 large orange • 100g dark chocolate Tip: for some added festive flavour add 1 teaspoon of each of the following spices to the dried fruit mixture to soak in overnight with the orange juice: cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg.

Method 1.Soak the dried fruit (dates, sultanas and figs) overnight in the juice from the squeezed orange. 2. Blitz the nuts using a powerful blender/bullet until all nuts are in a fine mixture. 3.Blitz the dried fruit in a food processor/blender and add into a

mixing bowl with the nut mix. 4.Add the almond butter, cocoa powder and honey into the dried fruit/ nut mixture in the bowl and mix to combine all of the ingredients together. 5.Place the mixture into a dome shaped container/mould and leave in the fridge for 3 hours. 6.Before serving, melt the dark chocolate. Turn the mould upside down on your serving plate and gently tap the top and sides in order to ease the pudding out. Then pour the melted chocolate all over the top and sides.
