This Valentine’s Day will be yet another one unlike others in the past, whether we are teenage lovers or more mature partners. That is obviously because of the continued threat of the new variant of Covid 19 and the new threat posed by the current virulent flu which is doing the rounds at present. However that does not mean that we cannot show love to those who mean the most to us. Remember, chocolate shops, jewellers shops, florists, restaurants and hotels are all still open. Unlike any other period in history we now have the means to stay in touch and communicate without meeting in person, whether that be through a mobile phone call or Face time or Zoom or whatever technology we have at hand. The worldwide communications structure is so vast now that we need never feel alone and we can send messages of love and support to those we care most about. Mind you, its still nice to get Valentines cards with their quirky rhymes. However,.we should also remember to all shop locally and ensure the local jobs of our neighbours and friends. We all know the dangers of not wearing face coverings, not regularly washing our hands thoroughly and not keeping our distance when meeting others. We all also know how boring our lives were during lockdown so lets continue to meet our family and friends and especially those we love on the 14th but lets be careful and safe. Simply put, we all want this to decrease again as soon as possible. We all want to reduce the number of people in hospital and worse, so lets all pull together once again as we did before and turn this around quickly, get back to as near normal a society as soon as possible and stay safe and enjoy our lives while being responsible. So please stay safe, lets pull together and keep supporting our HSE workers, our local shopping outlets. Our neighbours and most of all our families and those we love.

Have a happy and safe Valentine’s Day from all of us in the Locals team.

Johnston calls for Active Travel Plan for peninsula

Corina Johnston, Local Labour Area Representative is calling on Fingal County Council to initiate an Active Travel Plan for the Donabate and Portrane peninsula. Johnston said; “As an avid walker and cyclist I very much support the concept of the Fingal Coastal Way linking our towns and coastlines. However I am totally opposed to the proposed emerging route in Donabate from Newbridge Park via Turvey Green, Turvey Drive, Beverton and Ballisk for the following reasons: (1)This proposal is at variance with one of the main objectives of the scheme that is to encourage and enhance the Local Tourism Economy.

(2) The route diverts the public especially walkers and tourists through housing estates and away from the Village Centre and the Commercial and Historic areas of the village. (3)The residents along the route are totally opposed to the proposed route as it will open up the Turvey estate, which has been a cul de sac since the

estate was built over 30 years ago. At the time a proposal to provide an access into Beverton estate via Turvey Drive was successfully resisted by the residents.(4) The opening up of the estate would have major safety and security implications for all properties and especially for young children playing on the public open space and the elderly. I believe the most suitable route is the alternative route from Newbridge park via the Hearse Road/ the new cycle/pedestrian bridge over the Dublin Belfast line and via Smyth’s Pub which is an objective in the Donabate Local Area Plan. Johnston concluded; “I urge Fingal County Council to support my proposals for the alternative route in Donabate and to initiate an Active Travel Plan for the Donabate and Portrane peninsula to be initiated as a matter of urgency to integrate the Fingal Coastal Way, Coastal Walk and all the schemes and to ensure community engagement.

So how are those changes going?

So, February 2023. The time when many “New year, new me” changes may have faded into memory. So many great intentions of life improvements were planned: get healthier, spend more wisely, have more money, relax more, stress less, start a new hobby. All noble intentions, with one thing in common – they require you to make some changes and make time for those changes. For some aspects, this is easier than it is for others. Relax a bit more? Sure. Spend some “Me Time” in the gym? Absolutely. Do some work on planning the finances? “Errrrr…maybe I’ll start on that next week”! Without realising it, many people subconsciously view dealing with financial planning as “negative”. Understandably, who wants to sit discussing the potential loss in the event of a fatality, or a serious illness, or not being able to work, or thinking forward to the last third of your adult life? If any of these type of events would cause a financial loss to you or those dependent on you, making some time to at least establish what options are available, is the least you should consider. There are so many other benefits to reviewing your finances, not least of which, it can leave you with more money! Two of the tips I constantly tell people is to examine 3 months’ bank statements and to do a monthly spending exercise. Going through the bank

statements can help identify things that maybe you should no longer be paying for, or that you are duplicating. Keeping a spending diary for a month will give you a clear picture of detailed outgoings, allowing you to identify spending that you could possibly do more efficiently and permit you to make any changes necessary. The end result of making the time for such an important topic, will not only usually leave you better off financially, but put you more in control of your finances, thereby reducing the stress/anxiety often associated with money. One hour is 4% of your day. Make the time.

Through the Lens Calendar and Exhibition

On Saturday and Sunday the 5th and; 6th of November2022 ‘Through the Lens’, the Donabate and Portrane Photographic Group held their second Photo Exhibition in the Parish Hall in Donabate. With over 40 framed prints of photos taken by members both locally and in far flung places there was plenty to look at.The annual Through the Lens calendar was also displayed and on sale; the calendar, as always, contains only photos taken on the peninsula with the aim of providing seasonal views of our area. This year we are proud to support the Donabate & Portrane Tidy Towns who work so hard enhance our locality. We were delighted with the success of the calendar sales and as a result we have been able to donate €600 to the Tidy Towns Groups to aid them in their endeavours. Many thanks to our loyal customers and to our kind sponsors. In December members of both Through The Lens and the Active Age for All camera clubs joined forces to combine a photoshoot of the Swords Christmas lights with a seasonal get-together in the

Carnegie Court Hotel. A very enjoyable evening was spent reviewing the photographic events of the previous year and planning bigger and better for the next one. For anyone who may be interested in joining, or finding out about, either club look up Through the Lens on throughthelens.ie or for Active Age for All activeageforall.ie. Urgent Fundrai sing Appeal

Dear Resident,

Last month, An Bord Pleanála took the shocking decision to grant planning permission to Aledo Developments Ltd for almost 1400 units on the Corballis lands. This was despite our solid expert-led objections and has led to widespread outcries across our community.

This application is the second largest of its type, and used a planning instrument usually reserved for large urban centres. It is totally inappropriate and unsustainable for our peninsula, and if developed as proposed, will increase the population of Donabate from its current ca. 10,000 to over 14,000 people.

What is particularly troubling about the grant the Bord made is that is has :

➢ DISREGARDED the overwhelming weight of expert and public opinion cataloguing many reasons why its scale, size and location are wrong.

➢ DISREGARDED a painstakingly crafted County Development Plans which would’ve stopped this in its tracks.

➢ DISREGARDED serious ongoing infrastructural deficits exampled by frequent water and power outages, which are a constant bane in everyone’s lives here.

At a recent public meeting, DPCC received a unanimous endorsement from the community to undertake Judicial Review proceedings against this grant of permission. The legal opinion DPCC obtained here is favourable, particularly as similar have been very successfully challenged elsewhere.

The Community Council needs your help again to undertake the necessary challenges to have this monstrous application struck down. This is no easy task, but is one that we a s a community can and must win.

We’re especially conscious of the time of year, and with the cost of living so high. The message we got from you is clear and unambiguous though: this planning decision must be challenged. The support you gave last year has already gone a very long way towards fighting this and will be central in our challenge. A little support now from everyone at this difficult juncture will go a very long way to making our challenge a success. Please donate what you can today through our fundraiser using the above QR code, or via:

Five stars for the film called ‘8½’

‘8½’ is a strange title but one appropriate for the 1963 classic. Approaching its 60th anniversary, we look back as fondly as ever at the Federico Fellini masterpiece. Gaining its title simply from the number of films in which the Italian maestro had made to date, it really is a must-watch movie. It follows a troubled Italian filmmaker, Guido (Marcello Mastroianni), who struggles with the creative stasis of his next project. Overwhelmed by his struggles, he retreats into a world of fantasy, both past and present, resulting in his next project being very autobiographical. This bonafide classic is a study of male fantasy and fear of the creative mind. Throughout, we are constantly struck with wonderful dream-like imagery from Guido’s mind overlooking the past and present, most of which involves his association with women, the impact of women on his life and his true feelings for them. We also study the true horror of one suddenly losing their creativity for their craft. Fellini at his very best tended to bond a balance between fantasy and reality and never has it

been more evident than in ‘8½’. The film is a messy ball of confusion as our hero (Guido), a self-regarding man, finds himself lost and utterly empty as the film itself. Midway though, a friend of Guido turns to him, speaking the true essence of the film when saying: ‘I’ve figured out what your story is about. It’s a man’s inner confusion.’ This speaks volumes not just for ‘8½’ but for the majority of Fellini’s filmography, films like ‘La Dolce Vita’, ‘La Strada’ and ‘Nights of Cabiria’ which all fall into the themes of fantasy, dreams and desire. ‘8½’, still regarded as one of the finest films ever made, is on many lists and polls as one of the greatest and most influential films of all time. It is truly an astonishing, masterful and electrifying spectacle of optimism as we step into the dreams and world of Fellini. As the material is still so fresh, it’s only right to give it a score of FIVE stars.

•You can watch ‘8½’ on Prime Video or buy it on Blu-Ray for €21.37 on Amazon. Director: Federico Fellini

– Rating:15 – Genre: Fantasy/ Drama – Run Time: 2h 18m –

Language: Italian English. For more film content please follow @ movies4fanatics on Instagram.

Henchy says water and electrical outages are unacceptable

Cllr. Adrian Henchy said recently, “The recent surge in both Water and Electrical outages across Donabate and Portrane is totally unacceptable. I have called upon both representatives from the ESB and Irish Water to attend the next Area Committee meeting in County Hall, Swords in order to give elected representatives from across all parties and none the opportunity to hold them fully accountable for these far too frequent outages and what actions are being put in place to address them. One issue I have been campaigning on now for many years has been the all too frequent water pipe bursts and outages affecting Portrane but especially residents of the Burrow, Portrane and also residents living along Turvey Avenue, Donabate which has in recent months seen a spate of water outages.I am pleased to confirm Irish Water have committed to the upgrade of the water infrastructure network at the Burrow, Portrane and I will continue to campaign strongly on behalf of my local community for the replacement of old pipes and upgrade of water

infrastructure serving Turvey Donabate.” Henchy said, “I have been in regular communication with Irish Water on these matters and my thanks also to the Burrow Residents Association who brought this issue to my attention and have been campaigning for the water infrastructure to be replaced and upgraded given the all too frequent outages. At a recent area committee meeting, I requested an update from the Chief Executive in consultation with Irish Water on any plans to upgrade the Water Infrastructure serving The Burrow area in Portrane. Irish Water have informed me today, that the Asset Management Department of Irish Water have approved the replacement of approximately 1.1km of poorly performing 4” asbestos cement water mains on the Burrow Road. This work will take place in 2023.” Henchy added, “My thanks to both Irish Water and Fingal County Council for their commitment to these much needed infrastructural improvement works and be assured I have also requested that a sense of urgency be applied for

the replacement and upgrade of the major water mains network serving Turvey Avenue Donabate. I look out for updates on this in the coming weeks also.”

Help us celebrate International Women’s Day 2023

The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival is busy preparing for the 2023 festival which will celebrate 10 successful years of this renowned local festival with the quirky name! Lots of people have asked where does such an unusual name come from. It is, in fact, a local geographical landmark, albeit only visible at very low tide and with some climbing and pot-holing involved. The Bleeding Pig is a very unusual rock formation in a cave on the cliff walk from Donabate to Portrane. This rock formation does resemble a pig and in certain tidal conditions and when the light is right, the rock takes on a reddish/pink hue, suggesting that the pig is actually bleeding. No animals are harmed in the making of this festival! So, preparations are well underway for the festival in September. In the meantime, Donabate will celebrate International Women’s Day on Sunday March 5th from 12.30 ~

6.00pm in the Donabate/Portrane Community Centre. With thanks to the generous support of Fingal County Council, the Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival will host a day of activities and entertainment, specifically aimed at our female residents.Sisters Teresa and MaryLousie O’Donnell will open the day with an exhibition based on the book ‘Sisters’ about “sisters in Ireland who have made a difference”. Teresa and Mary Louise have themselves written a book called ‘Sisters of the Revolutionaries’ about Patrick Pearse’s sisters, Margaret and Mary Brigid. The O’Donnell sisters are accomplished harpists and they will also give a short performance.“A Problem Shared Is A Problem Halved” will be an informal presentation and discussion by Physiotherapist Ann-Marie Ennis. She will

discuss the inconvenient and uncomfortable condition of female incontinence. Ann O’Reilly from Hair Rootine will give a presentation about haircare called “Your Crowning Glory”. She will discuss the importance of a good diet and using appropriate products. Learn how to do various types of braids including Fishtail braid, French braid, Waterfall braid, Celtic braid. A firm favourite from IWD celebrations in recent years, Marks & Spencer have promised to send a fitter to correctly fit attendants for proper-fitting bras. Bras will be available to purchase on the day. There will be some entertainment in the centre during the day, more details to follow closer to the time. Come along to the Community Centre on Sunday March 5th between 12.30 and 5.30pm and celebrate being a woman!
