of whom have joined us in this country and are away from their own homes and loved ones at this special time when family matters most. However the main thing is to show and practise ‘Goodwill to all .’ Let us all do whatever we can to help them and especially their children to have as happy a Christmas as possible. Our goodwill should also extend to those less fortunate than ourselves in our local area. Those who are homeless, those who are sick, those struggling to make ends meet especially the elderly who are living off state benefits and who have little or no family to care for them. Maybe this year we should look in on our elderly neighbours and those sick and disabled in out community. Make sure they have fuel to heat their homes and food over the Christmas period and in the winter months ahead. Yes, we are all feeling the pinch at the moment. but most of us have a roof over our head, a warm place and bed to sleep in and family members who care. So let us appreciate all those things we take for granted by showing our caring and compassionate side this Christmas to those who for one reason or another find themselves in need. We all have a responsibility as human beings to care for each other and Advent gives us an opportunity to do just that. So let us be caring and compassionate. Show it by shopping local, checking on our elderly neighbours and supporting our community and each other.
Wishing you a happy and healthy Christmas to you all from the Locals Team

Christmas Spending Can Be Better Controlled
By Dave Kavanagh
Are there actions you can take to make the festive season less of a financial burden? Of course there are.Firstly, manage expectations: Most people can’t remember what they got 2 years ago, so don’t put yourself under too much pressure for “big” presents. Next, leave the credit card at home: At about 20% interest, adding debt for things you don’t need to overspend on, only starts the new year off in a negative.Be realistic with food shopping: The shops are only closed for 1-2 days, do you really need to stock up so much? In the days/weeks after Christmas, make a list of all the things you bought but didn’t really need or through out, and keep it for next year, so you don’t repeat the same mistakes. Kris Kindle: Talk to family and close friends to agree to pick one person and buy them a present for a set limit, to ease the burden. There are things you can also do all year round that can save you enough to cover the cost of Christmas: Switch utility providers, the savings can be quite substantial. Compare before you shop for larger items: Just because one store has a sign saying the TV you want is reduced from €799 to €699, doesn’t mean that another store that does not have a sale on, isn’t selling the same TV for €649. Take the time to shop around when your car or house insurance
renewals come in, it can be well worth the effort. Review premiums that you pay regularly, such as mortgage protection or life cover, especially if they were taken out directly with a bank who could not compare. Finally, go through a few months’ bank statements: we regularly find people paying for things that should have been cancelled years before or that they simply no longer require.
Dave Kavanagh QFA has been advising people financially for over 25 years. For quotes or information (with no cost or obligation) he can be contacted by emailing him on info@financialcompanion. ie or use the contact form on www. financialcompanion.ie or @Davekav_ advice on Twitter and Instagram. Johnston calls for works to save Beach Lane access road
Corina Johnston, Labour Party Area Representative is calling on Fingal County Council to carry out emergency works to save the Beach Lane access Road to 12 homes and public right of way. Johnston said; “Duncan Smith TD and I have been calling for the Seabees to be extended from the corner of the Beach Lane access Road to past the public right of way, which is accessed by fishermen and bird watchers, for a number of years. The situation has become critical in recent days with coastal erosion taking metres from the dunes along this stretch of beach and washing away the dunes at one point undermining the access road and making it virtually impassible. “Johnston added;” I visited the area in recent days and met with residents who are fearful they will no longer be able to access their homes before too long especially with the high tides and winter season upon us with no coastal protection measures in place. The public right of way to the beach has also been undermined with a huge drop now from the right of way to the beach which is unsafe and unstable. It is evident that if nothing is done now to safeguard the access road it will become impassible within days and the public right of way will be diminished
further and will disappear into the sea.” Johnston added;”Duncan and I have been in contact with the CEO and senior officials of Fingal County Council over the last few weeks insisting that the Seabees be extended immediately from their current location from the corner of the access road to past the public right of way in order for the road and right of way to be saved.” Johnston continued; “ A number of months ago our motion calling on the council to compulsory purchase order the access road was passed at a council meeting and while discussions had been ongoing with a land owner to provide an alternative access to the lane these discussions have ended without an agreement. The council need to immediately commence the CPO process to ensure the future viability of the entire access road. “ Johnston concluded; “Duncan and I have highlighted the seriousness of the situation with the CEO of Fingal County Council and Minister Darragh O’Brien and requested that this matter be given urgent priority and an assessment be carried out at this location with the Seabees extended to ensure the future viability of the road and the public right of way. “
The Bleeding Pig Festival – Miscellany still to come!
Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival 2022 ~ 2023 So, another hugely successful Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival has come to a close. After a Covid-induced absence of two years, the festival made a welcome return to the peninsula in September. The festival boasted 11 days of fun-filled cultural activities for all ages and all cultural tastes. From Art & Craft Workshops to Gala Concerts, Céili Dancing to Guided Tours, and Short Films to a Casino night, the timetable included something for everyone. All events in the Bleeding Pig Festival were free of charge. We are very grateful to all generous festival sponsors, without whose assistance the festival could not happen. Our sponsors include Fingal County Council, Tesco Ireland, SuperValu, DoughBox Pizza, Roughan & O’Donovan Engineers, Donough Higgins and D&S Construction Limited, Screenlink Printers, Cates Café, Forget-Me-Not Flowers, Life Pharmacy, Progressive Credit Union, Keelco Limited, John

The committee worked hard to put the festival together and make it such success. Carolan Secretary Eilish McDermott PR & Advertising
A huge debt of gratitude is due to Breda Dockrell for her tireless contribution to the festival since its’ inauguration in 2013. Breda is retiring from the committee and taking a wellearned break. We wish her all the best for the future. The next item on the Bleeding Pig calendar is the Winter Miscellany on Sunday December 18th at 6.30 in St. Patrick’s Church of Ireland. This festive favourite features stories written by members of the Chinkwell Writers, together with musical interludes from the Blanchardstown Brass Band, the Bevertones, Willie Cahill, Kate Smartt, Louise Flood School of Irish Daning, and the Yukeleles. 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival and the celebrations will be worthy of a decade of successful, fun, entertaining cultural events! Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed Wishes All a Happy Christmas
Donabate Christmas Lights Festival is back in 2022!
At Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed, we continue to expand the range of our activities. In addition to our usual weekly exercise classes on Mondays, croquet on Tuesdays and tea and chat on Thursdays, we recently had a pitch and putt outing to the scenic course in Deerpark, Howth. Although no one expects a call-up to the Ryder Cup team, we had a great morning, enjoying the company and the spectacular scenery. Also recently, we enjoyed our first annual Christmas dinner
After a Covid-19 absence of two years, the Donabate Christmas Lights Festival is back!!! The festival makes a welcome return on Saturday, December 3rd at 4.30pm, in the car-park of St. Patrick’s Church in the village. For the past 10 years or more, this much-loved local tradition has attracted huge crowds to the village to enjoy some seasonal festive refreshments and entertainment. This year is shaping up to be no different, with festive entertainment and refreshments for kids of all ages! And we have a real surprise in store to provide some seasonal entertainment. The organisers would like to thank Fingal County Council for sponsoring the event and for the beautiful Christmas tree and lights. Local electrician, Karl Harte, is coming back from retirement to oversee the installation of the festive lights around the village. Karl and his team have installed the festive lights around the village for more than 30 years, and we owe huge thanks to Karl for ensuring that the village will look festive and bright! We are very grateful to Tesco and SuperValu for their generous sponsorship of the event. SuperValu donate the delicious warm Mince Pies, washed down by
since 2019 in Keeling’s, again great company and wonderful tunes and songs. What a talented bunch! Based on the standard of performances, we hope to start a weekly jam session for members with an interest in music. We wish our members and the wider community, who has supported us over the years, a very happy Christmas and hope to see more members joining us in the New Year. If you’re interested, please call Jim on 086-3694316.
Mulled Wine courtesy of Tesco. We are also grateful to Fr. Pat Reilly and all at St. Patrick’s Church for accommodating this event. Just across the road from the church, in St. Patrick’s Parish Hall, the festive Donabate Christmas Craft Fair also makes a welcome return. From 12-6pm, local crafters and artisans will showcase their arts and crafts. Drop in and browse the market and maybe even pick up a quirky Christmas gift or two! And boys and girls, unlike recent years when Santa visited Donabate via Zoom, Santa himself will be in the Parish Hall, in person, from 2.30-5pm to meet you all. A visit with Santa is free of charge and no appointment is necessary. The organisers would like to thank the team of Elves who give up their Saturday to make the day such a success. The day wouldn’t happen without them. Thank you. Later on in the evening, the businesses in the village will showcase their goodies and offers with a Christmas Market in the Town Centre. So, come along to the village on Saturday December 3rd and join in the festive atmosphere. Let’s kickstart the festive season in Donabate in style!!

Successful “THROUGH THE LENS” photo exhibition last month
On Saturday and Sunday the 25/26th of November Through the Lens, the Donabate & Portrane Photographic Group, held their second Photo Exhibition in the Parish Hall in Donabate. With over 40 framed prints of photos by members taken both locally and in far flung places there was plenty to look at. The annual Through the Lens calendar was also displayed and on sale. This year we are proud to support
the Donabate & Portrane Tidy Towns who work so hard to enhance our locality with clever floral displays. The calendar, as always, contains only photos taken on the peninsula with the aim of providing seasonal views. It makes an ideal gift to send to family and friends abroad. We will be selling the calendars at the Christmas Market in the Parish Hall on December 3rd, the evening that Donabate Christmas lights are turned on. We
were delighted with the attendance at our Photo Expo and the amount of interest shown in joining the club. Niamh’s Festive Food Fun!
For parties, ensuring that the whole family gets their ‘7 a day’ over the festive season or for just a bit of fun and something to do! These are imaginative ways to get young people involved with food and encouraging a wide variety of vegetables and fruit throughout the day over the Christmas period.
Snowman/woman Spuds!
1.Cook and mash potatoes with a small amount of milk.
2. Use a spoon/ice-cream scoop to shape the mash into a larger round ball for the body and a smaller round ball for the head.
3.Place the small round ball on top of the large round ball on a plate/serving dish.
A ‘Veggie’ colourful Christmas tree
1.Wash and peel a long and large carrot. Top and tail the carrot.
2.Cut the carrot in half and then slice each half lengthways to make the trunk of the tree. Place onto a large serving dish (or use less carrot for a smaller plate).
3.For the tree branches and leaves, the following could be used: long runner green beans, mangetout or cucumber in long slices as in the image.
4.To make the star at the top of the tree, I used a star shaped cookie cutter and placed hummus inside and then lifted it off. The hummus can then be used to dip the vegetables into!
5.To decorate the tree, the more different coloured vegetables the better! In this image, there is peppers, beetroot and peas.
6.Finally, for the presents under the tree, cut different coloured peppers or carrots into shapes. I used tiny strips of beetroot to make bows on the presents.
4.Cut up a variety of vegetables to make the face, hat/hair and buttons and stick them on/in the balls of
mash potato. In the image attached, I used beetroot, peppers, brocolli, carrot and peas.
5.There’s many vegetables that could work for the arms! I used celery and long strips of carrot in mine.
Porridge Penguin
1.Make porridge as you/your child likes it.
2.Scoop onto the centre of a plate in a rounded heart shape.
3.Place blueberries around the edges of the porridge and down either side as arms.
4.Place 2 mandarin orange segments underneath as feet.
5.Place 2 blueberries and a triangle shaped chunk of kiwi
into the porridge as eyes and a nose.
6.Use a red pepper in a triangle shape and a blueberry for a hat with a bobble!
Wishing you and yours a wonderful Christmas time and health and happiness for the new year. For preschool, primary and secondary school or community group talks and workshops, please arthursniamh@gmail.com. See my ‘Fun food’ and ‘Recipes’ albums on ‘Biabites’ Facebook for other food ideas.

Portrane Hockey Club launch “ The Story of Hockey in Portrane”
by Adrian Henchy
It was a great honour to be in the Shoreline Hotel on Sunday November 13th for the official launch of the book “ The Story of Hockey in Portrane” marking the 100 years of Portrane Hockey Club from 1919-2019. Wonderful to see so many great friends and players from down through the decades who gave their all to the purple & white of Portrane Hockey Club. My own memories and joy from playing and been involved in this great family and community club is just immeasurable. Great credit to the author of the book Mr. James Bennett for the painstaking work that went into putting the book together “ The story of hockey in Portrane”. He received enormous assistance and encouragement at all times from my own father Paschal or “ Percy” Henchy as they call him in hockey circles. As we mark and celebrate the last 100 years of Portrane Hockey Club many of those years just about surviving to where we are now today in 2022 one of the fastest growing hockey clubs in Leinster, fielding 7 Adult teams in the Leinster hockey leagues and almost 300 juveniles from our academy right up to our Under 16s, ensures a very bright future for Portrane Hockey Club. Family names like the Neville’s, Byrne, McCann,
Conway, Henchy’s that are connected all the way back to the foundation of the club continue to this day. and the club are also indebted to new families into Donabate like the Van Dreumel, Patterson, Lloyd, Shoebridge and McCarthy families who together with so many others have the club in such a strong and healthy position in 2022. Portrane Hockey Club were delighted to welcome Jack Chambers Minister for Sport, Howard Mahoney Mayor of Fingal, our own Club Development Officer Cllr. Adrian Henchy
and Kenny Carroll from Hockey Ireland along with many Former and Current players, Committee members and supporters to help launch our book. It was also wonderful to be joined on this occasion by former local TD and legendary Portrane Hockey Goalkeeper Mr. Sean Ryan. The book is available to buy from the club on Amazon.portranehockey.clubzap.com/ products/9852/purchases/new Here’s to the next 100 years and many more great club memories and friends made.
