According to official statistics Summer is over. No more warm days, no more sunshine and no chance of a barbecue. However, this is only September so do not panic we have often had some of our best weather this month, mind you it would be hard to beat those few weeks in August. The kids will be returning to school and Autumn is on our doorstep but we are not ready to stop smiling yet are we? Of course not, we are looking forward to all the good holidays Autumn –Halloween, Winter- Christmas and Spring – Easter before we return again to the warm Summer days. Until those days return lets all keep smiling enjoy our families and friends company and of course tell everyone you now to get their copy or follow us online or Facebook. We are and always will be here for you, our community. If you are involved in a community/voluntary/charitable/ sporting organisation we are here to help and promote them including their events and there never has been and never will be any charge for this service. We really appreciate the good work such organisations do in our community After two years of lockdown and Covid rampage our motto has now become “Keep smiling through” and we are committed to doing so. Our charitable organisations are back hard at work, our community and voluntary groups are back in full swing and our sporting groups (with some adjustments to their schedule) are back doing what they do best. Covid hasn’t gone away so we still need to be careful but we are learning to live with it. So lets do what we enjoy doing as the Autumn/ Winter months close in. Lets support our community, support our local groups, support our local traders, service providers and shops and support each other until the sun shines again in June, July and August next year. Oh and above all lets keep smiling!

Summer maybe over but lets all keep smiling !

When I do group talks, I often ask the question whether anyone’s close family or friends have been affected by cancer? I have only ever had one person say “no”. When I ask whether the same close family or friends have ever won the lotto jackpot, not surprisingly, it’s (almost) always “no”. Yet with odds of 10.7 million to 1 to win the lotto jackpot, people spend a relatively large amount of money each week on lotto (and Euromillions and scratch cards etc.) believing and hoping that it will happen to them. The same people have a 4 to 1 chance of being diagnosed with one of the Serious Illnesses covered BEFORE they are 65. We often review people’s finances and see that they have their vehicles insured, their house insured, their pets, mobile phones, lap tops and jewellery insured but not themselves! It’s not until one of these events happens that people can fully appreciate the financial loss that is suffered. An important detail is that even if people have cover in place from a few years back, they could well be paying over the odds premium wise or it may no longer be most appropriate. Take the time to check what is most appropriate for your specific circumstances.

As heard on RTE 2FM , LMFM and TV3. it is too late

Many people are in the “it’ll never happen to me” group, when it comes to planning for events that could potentially impact finances. Let’s face it, nobody wants to think that anything “bad” will happen to them but the reality is, bad things happen whether we like it or not. The three areas that are most prevalent to this topic are, Life Cover, Serious Illness Cover and Income Protection. Of course, we would hope that we are not going to die prematurely, we are not going to get seriously ill and accident or illness will not prevent us from being able to work. Sadly, in this small country of ours, over 7,000 people die each year NOT of natural causes (under age 65), we are heading towards 43,000 new cancer cases every year (the cause of more than 50% of Serious Illness claims) and the average time off work for an income protection claim is close to 5 years!

Irish Guide Dogs - A Guide Dog Graduation

Did you know that all services from Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind are free of charge. However, it costs €5m a year to run the charity and €53,000 to breed, train and care for one Guide Dog during its working lifetime.85% of the funding comes from fundraising, corporate partners and gifts in Wills. It takes 2 years to train a dog and a working dog will generally retire around the age of 10. Currently there are, 184 working Guide Dog Partnerships, 213 working Assistance Dog Partnerships. We are happy to provide some puppy in training updates.

North County Dublin branch’s Guide Dog Ollie recently graduated and Andy said that, “He is a joy to have and as Guide Dogs go he is a pleasure to work and has like my previous dogs enhanced my life in the best possible way. It’s great to be out and about with a working dog again and to feel confident in getting around the place again. So if you see us be sure to stop and say hello to the chaos that is Ollie and I.”

By Carina Cunningham Little did she know, this time last year that she would be cast as the leading lady in a vampire film called “Tara Hill”. Director/Writer Bobby Cullen of Ryker Films spotted Becky and took a chance on her, even though she did not have a lot of experience in filming. Becky has been modelling a few years now and is well used to the camera. She has also walked the catwalk on many fashion shows including; Style Warriors fashion and Entertainment Show and other charity events. She has now been granted the opportunity to see herself up on the big screen in this gothic fantasy film set for “Tara Hill”, overlooking the sea at Gorey. Marc Hughes; award winning producer of film “Red Room” has merged with Bobby Cullen under the name of Ryker Films. Together, they plan to enter “Tara Hill” into the Cork Film Festival and The Richard Harris Film Festival this Autumn. Bobby is also an accomplished singer/ songwriter. His songs are featured in the upcoming film “Tara Hill”. “ My Carousel ” is Bobby Cullens’ rock song, which he sang and produced himself. Wardrobe for the entire film has been designed by Carina Cunningham. Make-up is a very important part of a vampire film and none other than the very well-known make-up artist Gillian Stapleton is on set fixing vampire fangs at her best. This will be a super film with amazing scenery; sea, forests, hills, and lakes. The next scene will be shot in Style Warriors Dreamscape room 102 Ardgillan Castle, where the room will be transformed into a smokey vampire local pub. The room, set up with candles and lady vampires will be the perfect setting. Once again costumes will need to be co-ordinated with make-up to set the scene. This fantasy world is my style and needless to say, I will be in my element helping style this. Actress Becky Archbold will look fabulous in Red, plus at leastothertenvampires dressed to taste and kill. Blood is the drug for Becky and her kin! After this film, what’s next for merging Actress Becky Archbold? When one door closes, another one opens, as she has been cast in a new programme which will be filmed in the Autumn. Watch this space as it’s under wraps right now. A perfect second role for Becky, that’s all I can say right now. So, onwards and upwards. Wishing Becky all the best in her new chapter in the film world. Watch out Hollywood, she’s on her way! Becky Archbold in “Tara Hill” A scene from “Tara Hill”

“The sea, that blue end of the world”...Elizabeth Barrett Browning - Now in its third year, the Fingal Poetry Festival weekend will run from the 15-18th September following its launch at the Illumination of Floraville on Thursday, September 1st. The Festival celebrates the light that poetry brings to our lives and the sea, which is precious to all and in peril. The full programme is available on our website www. fingalpoetryfestival.comExpect to find poetry in unexpected places — on shop windows, pavements — and, colourfully illuminated and projected at Floraville, our lovely little park right in the heart of town beside the Library. The Festival weekend will have something for everyone — from an aerial dance spectacle to poetry walks through the High Woods of Ardgillan Castle and Red Island, lunchtime poetry readings, glittering evenings filled with live music and an especially commissioned film poem by Pat Boran. We hope to welcome the next generation of poets through exhibitions of local pupils’ poems in Fingal Libraries, a visit by Laureate na nÓg Áine Ní Ghlinn, a Family Poetry Fest, and other fun family-friendly events.

If you would prefer to participate online, come along to our virtual ‘Night Sky’ or ‘An Dán ar Ardán’ poetry workshops! In a unique event on Saturday, the Deaf Poets’ Society will share their work, voiced by an interpreter — have a look at our website programme for a full list of ISL interpreted events. As ever, the Irish language is a pillar of the Festival. We would love to see you at our bilingual poetry readings, Comhrá & Craic, the Clinic Leaghair (Book Clinic),or the Seomra Open Mic on Sunday. Reaching out into the wider Fingal community, we will have three workshops in Fingal schools.Enda Coyle-Greene, Artistic Director, said “At our previous ‘live’ events, I’ve loved the reactions of our audiences, especially perhaps those people who mightn’t normally have considered poetry to be ‘their thing‘ (or could just be nursing a hangover from school and exams!) Our programme this year features a broad range of poets from Ireland and elsewhere, including Leontia Flynn, Michael O’Loughlin, Aifric Mac Aodha, Kate Miller, Dermot Bolger, and many more, so there should be a reading to suit everyone.”Fingal Poetry Festival is supported by the Arts Council Ireland, Foras na Gaeilge, Fingal CountyCouncil, Fingal Libraries, Leabhair Pháistí Éireann, Laureate na nÓg, Poetry Ireland, and RTÉ Supporting the Arts. Our international poetry competitions, The Fingal Poetry Prize and An Fiach Dubh – the Irish language prize, are sponsored by DHL International Forwrding and Progressive Credit Union, respectively. If you would like to volunteer at the Festival, send us an email at fingalpoetryfestival@gmail.com!

By Siobhan O’Neill White September is often the busiest month of the year for slimming and fitness clubs – for many of these businesses, it is even more busy than January! As the children go back to school and routine becomes the norm again, we start to think ahead to Christmas and the party season and the dread of the LBD (Little Black Dress!). Covid has played havoc with many of our waistlines (mine included unfortunately!) and while it’s good to focus on a healthier attitude to sweets and treats in general, instead of putting huge pressure on yourself to achieve something huge like losing a stone or two before Christmas, how about setting some smaller, more achievable goals instead? We can help! In 2018, we ran a free weight loss group on mams.ie and it was very successful. The aim was to lose half a pound a week by making small changes. Increasing your exercise, cutting down on alcohol, drinking more water, cutting down on fizzy drinks – just these changes alone can bring great results. We all supported each other and it was in a non judgemental way, which really spurred everyone on. I find that, when I want to lose some weight, small changes are the way to go. Instead of cutting out all your favourite treat foods in one go and radically changing your diet, make small changes that are more realistic. So, don’t just quit frothy coffees and a chat with the girls, instead opt for a flat white and have a glass of water on the go at all times. Sometimes, we think we’re hungry when in fact, we are just thirsty. If you fancy a scone with that coffee, earn it, by walking to the café. That way you won’t feel guilty afterwards! When it comes to weekends, go easy on yourself. You don’t have to quit all your favourite things. You can still have a take away but limit it to one a week and if you are having a glass wine, think about drinking white instead of red as its lower in calories. I love soda water with splash of lime cordial, few cubes of ice and a slice of lime, it feels like a drink but no hangover the next day! Instead of reaching for crisps, have other snacks at the ready. Mini crackers and cheese are a good option if you want something salty but don’t want to devour a tub of pringles. And popcorn is a brilliant option – just go easy on the butter. We will be restarting our mams.ie weight loss club again this September, it is free of charge for mams.ie members, all you need to do is create an account at mams.ie and then subscribe.

Losing weight the healthy easy way to suit yourself!

Balbriggan lady cricketer scores her first century!

Our Women’s Team had a brilliant win last night , there was a little bit of history as Skipper Lara Maritz became the first Balbriggan Women’s player to score a century with a spectacular 108 Not Out , Lara was backed up ably by her sister Tess who was 23 not out at the end , it was an excellent team performance with our young bowlers getting valuable experience and everyone backing each other in the field. The team spirit in coach Chuka Uba’s squad is fantastic and evident in the team pics.

4. Just before removing from the freezer, melt the dark chocolate and then spread it on top of the mixture.

“Back to work, school or college after the Summer break may mean back to routine but it doesn’t have to mean back to bad habits! Autumn is the season for change and what better way to start the new school year than on a healthy note. A lot of cereal bars in shops are loaded with sugar which give an instant energy high but this is rapidly followed by an energy crash and cravings for more sweet foods. These cereal bars below are tasty but very satisfying and filling. Not to mention they are so simple to make and contain only 5 ingredients which are very commonplace in many homes.

Ingredients Makes 15 bars 500g muesli (No added sugar) 200mls milk 100g nut butter (Peanut/almond/ cashew etc.) tablespoons honey 150g dark chocolate to coat on top Method

1. Make a well in the centre of the muesli in a mixing bowl. Add the milk and using a knife make an ‘X’ in the mixture, mixing the milk into the 2.muesli.Add the honey and nut butter and combine together.

3. Spread onto a baking tray with grease proof paper and freeze for 4 hours or overnight.

5. Place the mixture back in the freezer for another hour. Make sure it is quite solid. Then cut it up and gobble up! Try store some in a lunchbox in the freezer so that they last the week!!
