ello Lupin Hill Families. This year is flying by! We are almost to the end of our first trimester. I am so proud of all our students and staff. Our students have been working so hard! I am amazed at how much they have learned and grown over the first trimester.

The Lupin Hill Garden has been such an educational and fun experience for all the students. The garden is flourishing right now. Thank you to our fantastic farmers! I love watching the excitement of all the students as they show me the vegetables they have planted. Last week I saw students almost jump out of their shoes because a baby strawberry was sprouting. They were so proud to show me.

It has been such a pleasure to see how many parents and students are participating in the morning mile. I love walking around the track, talking to the students, and seeing how excited they are collecting as many straws as they can.

Keep up the great work!

At our Friday Spirit Assemblies, I have seen so much excitement and energy. We have talked about treating others the way you want to be treated, the importance of being nice, keeping your hands to yourself, positive self-talk, and having a growth mindset. Please help us by continuing these conversations with your children.

Good news! At the School Board meeting on 10/17/2017, SC Anderson Construction was approved as our contractor.

SC Anderson is the same construction company that did the construction on Lindero Canyon Middle School and the AHS and CHS PAEC’s. They will be on campus multiple times in the FILES FORMAT next few weeks to start preconstruction services. As soon as I get AI / EPS / SVG more details on when construction will start and how long it will take, I will get the information out to you.

PFC UP DATE

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR AWESOME LUPIN HILL FAMILIES

W

e have been at school for two months now and it has been such a positive start. In terms of parent engagement, we are in a really strong position with so many families turning out to support the school at events, restaurant nights, recycling drives and much more.

Looking back at the Facebook feed from the last month, we see just how much is going on at school. This month alone we have had two really successful Bottle & Can recycling drives for Fifth Grade, we had Walk To School Day and got some photos on the front page of The Acorn. We also had our Clothing Swap which raised over $700 for the school and enabled us to donate some great clothes to The Good Shepherd Women’s Shelter in Downtown LA. We have had our Sharky’s Restaurant Night and our Islands Restaurant Night which were both really well supported – thank you to everyone who sent in photos – Free kids’ meal vouchers are coming your way. We also had our first Sip & Snack Social – a

fantastic paint night with Mrs Young.

TLC Donation Drive As we write this letter, we still haven’t reached the amount of TLC needed to cover all our costs for the upcoming year.

We are still about $9000 short and have only 2 classes at 75% participation which means NO PIZZA PARTIES! PFC Events Our big TRUNK OR TREAT event was on Friday, October 27. This year, it was set up a bit differently, with FREE wristbands being given out to all students so they are able to make one pass through the trunks and then FOUR game tickets to play the carnival games. It is the children’s favorite event of

November 4th. It was a great success and we raised over $1800 for our school.

One of the largest contributors to the success of our school and students comes from our parent helpers and volunteers.

A very large and loud shout out to all of our Lupin volunteers who have made the beginning of the school year a great one. I love to see how the school community comes together before school, in school and after school to help every child achieve their potential. Classroom volunteers, as well as Art, Library and Garden volunteers allow a lower adult:child ratio, in which each child gets the most out of their learning experience.

Every morning parents are out on the field for Morning Mile, where our kids can get moving before they sit in class, which has been proven to enhance their ability to focus in the classroom.

Without your time and talents our students would not enjoy these opportunities.

he Morning Mile is sponsored by Peachwave Frozen Yogurt, owned by the Medlin family and will be opening soon at the bottom of Thousand Oaks Blvd. This allows us to have extra prizes and incentives this year which we are so excited about!

In addition to prizes this year, we will be having each grade level select a destination to run to. Their progress will be tracked on a map visible for everyone to see how close they are to reaching their goal.

How fun for the kids to see collectively how far they run!

Here are the incentives for running in the morning

1) Every 30 laps (5 miles): children will receive a charm and will be given a necklace to put them on when they earn their first charm 2) 50 miles: they will receive a voucher to receive a free cup of frozen yogurt from Peachwave.

3) 100 miles: they will get a special 100 mile charm, earn a free cup of froyo for them and a friend, get a 100 Mile tshirt, plus get to have a pizza and froyo party with Mr Foli at the end of the year!

4) Special ‘Glow in the Dark’ charms which will be given during certain weeks. We will let

you know ahead of time when those are.

5) 200 miles: runners will earn another special charm and a medal/trophy.

6) 300 miles: they will earn another special charm and surprise prize!

O

ne month in and all is well…

The garden has been open for a month now. Garden Club has been coming down each month and has been helping with weeding, clearing beds and planting up their own pots. They planted beans in the first week and some of these have started to grow.

We have been using the beans to teach the classes about how seeds grow. Each class has come to the garden and received a lesson on seeds and then they have planted some seeds in the garden beds.

PROTECTING OUR SEEDS We are still fighting a battle with the critters – we need to invest in some more heavy duty protection for the beds.

Is there anyone at school that would be able to make us some covers? Ideally we would like them to be made of wood and fabric mesh – if you have a decent circular saw and a nail gun, this should be an easy enough project. We can provide the measurements and all materials.

his month we would like to talk at length about our district policy regarding our nut safe campus. Last month’s Tiger Tales also had some information about our nut safe policy, but we thought a review would be helpful.

We do have students on campus with severe allergies to various nuts, peanuts and tree nuts, so we do appreciate your help in keeping our entire campus nut safe.

We ask that you consider the following list of foods when packing your student’s lunch. Have your student get involved in making his/her lunch, and you might find that they actually eat more, and help you out with preparing their lunch.

We also have students who are lactose intolerant and dairy sensitive. An informational sheet is also available on our

district website. It gives parents detailed information on how to read labels for soy, milk, and nut allergies.

Finally, add some of these items for the protein portion of your lunch. Also, feel free to add fruits to your child’s lunchbox, they are a great source of energy and natural sugar: Chicken and brown rice salad, Chickpea Salad, Mini Frittatas, DIY Pizza lunch, Pastas and sauce, Cheese quesadilla, Chicken wraps, Veggie Wraps, Asian (Chicken) Noodle Salad, Corn and Bean Pockets with pita, Summer rolls, Ham and Cheese wraps, Meatloaf sandwich… this list could go on and on!

There are great websites out there that can assist you with packing your child’s lunch. Check out the following two sites, but also feel free to explore yourself.

have many alternatives to nuts, so think of those parents who send their child to school every day with a nut allergy, that’s a frightening thought, and each of us can help out in creating a safe environment for all of our students.

R E D R I BBO N W EEK – S T U DE NT E SSAYS The students were challenged to write essays based on this year’s theme for Red Ribbon Week Making Healthy Choices for a Bright Future. Here were the two essays that won.

A BRIGHT FUTURE My future is bright so I want to be fit!

What is the magic recipe for a healthy body? The magic is to sprinkle every day of your life with healthy choices. First, let us make a “heart” healthy choice to keep our blood pumping. It is ok to sneak in a sweet bite but watch out for those fatty foods. Pump up your heart with exercise – scissors, jumping jacks and our very own Morning Mile!

Wait! But we don’t want to break our bones. Let us take care of our bones by consuming calcium rich foods like milk, cheese and small fish like sardines. Our body takes time to digest the food we eat. It is wise to eat small portions multiple times a day, rather than eating big chunks in one go. Doctors suggest to eat dinner at least 30 minutes before going to bed.

Above all, keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water and eat fiber rich foods like fruit and vegetables. Last but not least, make your days sunny with bright smiles. Let us make a change for our life.

THE KEY TO BEING HEALTHY IS TO MAKE GOOD CHOICES LIKE…. EXERCISE! Every day after school I either ride my bike or scooter, or I just FORMAT run around the neighborhood all the way to FILES the swimming pool / EPS SVG and back. Or I maybe will do jump rope orAI hula hoop /for ten minutes or I play baseball with my dad. Well… hot exactly baseball because we don’t run to first base, second or any of that, we just take a yellow sign that says “SLOW – Kids At Play”, we take a baseball glove and we just play catch. I also play sports like tennis, horseback riding and piano. The reason why piano is a kind of exercise is because it exercises your eyes, fingers and feet (and brain). Tennis is an exercise for y our arms, eyes and feet.

Horseback riding uses your muscles and builds up your muscles.

We had a great turnout of enthusiastic parents and Lupin Hill friends who came out to socialize while attenting a guided paint night by our very own Lupin Hill art specialist, Mrs. Young.

Meet: KRISSI POVAH

M

y name is Krissi Povah and I have been the office assistant at Lupin Hill for the past 10 years. I love working in the front office and helping students, parents, and staff every day with whatever they need.

Before working at Lupin Hill, I was a Special Education Instructional Assistant at Round Meadow Elementary for 5 years. Both my sons, Derek (24) and Braden (20), attended LVUSD schools - Lupin Hill, AE Wright, and Agoura High School. Derek now works at LVUSD as a computer tech, and Braden is currently attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

I grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and moved to California when I was 18. I attended Cal State Northridge, where I started as a Music major but ended up getting my degree in Psychology. I still like to play the flute and piccolo whenever I get a chance. When I’m not at work, I enjoy going to concerts, watching cooking shows, and hanging out with my dog, Domino, and my 2 cats, Dandy and Perri.

I also love going out to eat with my friends and family. My favorite food is sushi, and my favorite restaurant is Hanami Sushi in Calabasas! Every summer I travel to Florida to visit my family, but if I could live anywhere in the world, I would live in Maui and go snorkeling every day!

here are so many wonderful books gracing the shelves of the Lupin Hill library. Each month, we will be making some suggestions of titles for our students to try. These have been split by reading grade level - not necessarily the grade that your child is currently in.

Don’t forget it is also the Lupin Hill Book Fair soon. Books make a wonderful gift for readers young and old. Reading can take you on adventures into the past, the present and the future. Why not treat yourself to a book from the fair and help support the school?

Each month, we will list a few books from the school library for each grade level.

Please take some time to look at these titles and discuss them with your children. The library is such a wonderful resource but we often find the students checking out the same author time and time again. We would love for them to expand their reading and give other books and authors a try.

How to choose:

Broccoli is a great source of vitamins K and C, a good source of folate and also provides potassium, fiber.

Vitamin K – essential for the functioning of many proteins involved in blood clotting.

Vitamin C – builds collagen, which forms body tissue and bone, and helps cuts and wounds heal. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and protects the body from damaging free radicals.

Fiber – diets high in fiber promote Digestive health. A high fiber intake can also help lower cholesterol.

Potassium – a mineral and electrolyte that is essential for the function of nerves and heart contraction.

Folate – is necessary for the production and maintenance of new cells in the body.

There are two things to look for when shopping for broccoli: The heads should be tight and Compact and the flower buds Should be closed, with no signs Of yellow flowers. Check the stems. The peel can be thick but it shouldn’t be woody.

e are always looking for healthy snack ideas for our kids. Here’s a 2 surprisingly healthy snack that kids love to find in their lunchboxes.

These cakes replace some of the flour with oatmeal and some of the butter with applesauce.

1 cup wholewheat flour ¾ cup rolled oats ½ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt 6 tablespoons melted butter (slightly cooled) 1 large egg ¾ cup packed light brown sugar ½ cup unsweetened applesauce ¾ cup semisweet mini chocolate chips

SNACK C ORNER

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line the bottom of a 9-inch square baking pan with parchment paper or foil. Spray with cooking spray.

Whisk together flour, oats, baking soda and salt in a bowl until combined - set aside Whisk together butter, egg, brown sugar and applesauce in a bowl until combined. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just mixed.

Add the chocolate chips.

Spread batter in the prepared pan and put in oven.

Bake until cake is light brown around the edges and a toothpick comes out clean from the center - approx 25-30 minutes.

Remove from oven and allow to cool for 15 minutes in the pan.

Remove from pan and leave to cool completely.

Cut into pieces and serve.
