Sustainable Seafood, Responsibly Sourced

W

ild halibut, sockeye salmon and swordfish. Farm-raised tilapia, Atlantic salmon and Copano Blues shrimp. All of these great seafood offerings in our stores share an important attribute—they come from sustainable fisheries that meet our stringent “Responsibly Sourced” criteria. Nearly six years ago we made a commitment to dramatically increase the number of sustainable seafood choices in our stores. To do so, we knew it would mean taking the knowledge and passion of our team and combining it with some of the leading sustainable seafood resources throughout the country, including the Global Aquaculture Alliance, Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch and Alaska Seafood. Another key partner in our quest to expand our sustainable seafood choices is The Fish Guys, a local company supplying our stores with fresh seafood seven days a week. Led by the highly experienced and trusted team of Mike Higgins and Brent Casper, The Fish Guys source whole fish so their skilled team can fillet them to our exact specifications. Their commitment to exceptional quality is matched by their care and commitment to searching the globe for new fisheries that meet our Responsibly Sourced guidelines. With their help we introduced Copano Blues Shrimp and Regal Springs Tilapia this past year. Both of these seafood companies are on the leading edge of sustainability, and we’re thrilled to now be offering you these great Responsibly Sourced seafood choices. To learn more

about Regal Springs Tilapia and our everexpanding sustainable seafood options, see pages 12-13. When we launched our Responsibly Sourced program in 2011, approximately 50 percent of our fresh and frozen raw seafood offerings were sustainable. Today, nearly 75 percent of our seafood offerings come from fisheries whose practices ensure they can maintain or increase production without jeopardizing the ecosystems from which the seafood is raised and harvested. As we look to increase our Responsibly Sourced offerings to more than 80 percent this year, our seafood team is actively exploring fair-trade tuna. We expect to have it available in all of our stores by this summer. Logo Lock-up The next time you’re in our meat and seafood department, look for our Responsibly Sourced logo.
