Influential seminar speakers confirmed

Christine Tacon, Tesco, Marks and Spencer, and Coca-Cola Enterprises among leading names set to appear The free seminar programme at this year’s PPMA Show boasts a strong line-up of influential speakers, with Groceries Code Adjudicator Christine Tacon, Tesco, Wyke Farms, Aimia Foods, Marks and Spencer, The Good Whey Company, Morrison Bowmore, Harford Control, Essentra Packaging and Coca-Cola Enterprises all now confirmed. “The star turn of the first day’s seminar programme is Christine Tacon, who is tasked with ensuring that the ten large supermarkets treat their suppliers fairly and lawfully,” says David Harrison, PPMA Group Exhibition Manager. “After surveying the 367 manufacturers that took part in the Government’s Automating Manufacturing Programme there is clear evidence that the food industry’s reluctance to automate is in part driven by the lack of contracts between suppliers and the major multiple retailers. The Adjudicator’s actions will hopefully help to change this culture – Christine’s session is not to be missed.”

Twelve free-to-attend seminars Bringing a wealth of topical news and their own ‘black-book’ of processing and packaging leaders, each of the 12 free-to-attend seminars is hosted by a leading industry title including Packaging News, Automation, Fresh Produce Journal, and The Manufacturer, as well as our own Machinery Update. Chaired by its respective editor, each seminar will offer an insight into the world of manufacturing looking at a range of topics including automation integration, sustainability and robotics.

In his seminar entitled ‘Innovation, Automation & Culture: A winning formula’, Patrick Mroczak, Operations Director for Aimia Foods, will explain how culture plays a pivotal role in the successful implementation of automation systems. Patrick will also provide valuable insight into how creating sustainable improvements linked to automation can be a powerful selling tool to grow your business (2pm, Weds 1 Oct).

Hear from Tesco and M&S Kevin Vyse, Packaging Technologist for M&S Food Group, will consider whether we fully understand how global consumer and lifestyle changes are going to impact packaging solutions, in his seminar entitled ‘Adapt or Die – The evolution of consumer packaging’ (12pm, Weds 1 Oct). Tesco’s Packaging Manager, Paul Earnshaw, will discuss how the retailer is moving from a value-led approach to packaging development and innovation, to a collaborative approach that aims to match the packaging industry’s technology and innovations to its own market and consumer insights (11am, Weds 1 Oct). Visitors can also hear how Harford Control’s real time management information system has substantially improved quality consistency and efficiency whilst reducing wastage at Morrison Bowmore’s bottling operations (12pm, Tues 30 Sept).

Machinery Update’s session (1pm, Weds 1 Oct) will feature Ian Barnett from Coca-Cola Enterprises, who will talk about how the UK’s biggest soft drinks manufacturer has hard wired sustainability into every aspect of its operations, as well as the latest developments in this area.

Meanwhile, Peter Hooper, Production Manager for Wyke Farms, will outline how to optimise automation investments in the food and drink industry during his session (11am, Thurs 2 Oct). Watch this space for further information as more leading speakers are announced!

Penn Packaging launches new pouch filling machine The new SN FM 415 from Penn Packaging can fill and seal more than 200 stand up pouches per minute (size 110 x 210.5 mm, tested with 340g of tomato sauce, hot-filled and without overspilling). The filling dosage is designed as a Quadro flow meter with two filling stations that fills four pouches at the same time, reducing overspilling at maximum output to a minimum.
