ESSENTIAL GEAR FOR SERIOUS DIVERS Dear Readers, In this issue of the Luminox TIMES magazine, you will read about all new models Luminox is launching this Fall - including our latest Deep Dive Automatic 1520 Series that I’m particularly proud of!

These watches comply with the strict and extremely high standards of ISO 6425 for diving watches. The Deep Dive Automatic 1520 Series was designed and conceived to become a best-inclass watch amongst diving watches and input from longtime friend of the Luminox brand Scott Cassell proved instrumental in order to achieve this level of performance.

Luminox started its collaboration with undersea explorer Scott Cassell back in 2009 when we were looking for a professional diver to “test and request” our watches. Scott not only does an extraordinary job, protecting endangered white sharks or removing ghost nets from the Ocean – he is also a man of high ideals and a fantastic person to work with. I feel privileged to have been diving with Scott and the memory of diving together in the Bahamas, surrounded by three tiger sharks

The watches are water resistant to 500 meters / 50 bar. Many companies make watches with 200 meters water resistance, but 500 meters is much more challenging and separates the Luminox Deep Dive from the pack. On a divers watch, the minute hand is the most critical hand, and that’s why it is broader, highly visible, in a contrast color, with double Luminox Light Technology tubes for unmistakable visibility. The bezel locking system guarantees that the bezel will not turn inadvertently – helping you spending just the right amount of time under water; staying too long would be dangerous, staying too little would be a pity when there is so much beauty to see down there!

BRAND STORY HOW IT ALL STARTED

THE FIRST SUCCESSES

1989

1994

Like many other American success stories, Luminox came from a forwardthinking individual realizing a need in the market and meeting it. Barry Cohen, a watch industry veteran, came across a Swiss self-powered illumination system and knew that it would make watches more visible and easier to read in low or no light situations.

He asked his friend Richard Timbo if he would like to join him. Luminox was born in 1989 (Lumi is Latin for light while Nox is Latin for night), driven by a commitment to offer cutting-edge luminescence and readability in its line of high-performance sports watches.

The Luminox 3001 Original Navy SEAL is launched and is the timepiece that made Luminox famous.

Since then, we refer to the illumination technology in the Luminox watches as the Luminox Light Technology (LLT).

After Luminox provided the watches to the SEALs, more elite units contacted the brand directly, including the U.S. Coast Guard, New York City Police Department, Singapore Air Force, Special Military Forces Israel and many other law enforcement groups.

1997 Luminox makes its debut in Hollywood!

Actor Viggo Mortensen wears a Luminox Original Navy SEAL 3001 watch in the movie G.I. Jane starring Demi Moore.

1992 The officer in charge of procurement for the Navy SEALs, Nick North, was asked to seek a more dependable watch for night missions and found the solution at a trade show where he discovered Luminox. He worked with Barry Cohen to develop a watch specifically for them and the Navy SEAL watch was born.

1998 Luminox was approached by US Air Force pilots flying the F-117 Nighthawk™ Stealth fighter jet. This initial contact turned into a worldwide license agreement to produce Lockheed Martin timepieces, including watches tied to the F-117 Nighthawk™, F-16 Fighting Falcon™, SR-71 Blackbird™ and the new F-22 Raptor™, P-38 Lightning™ and most recently, the F-35 Lightning II™.

This Lockheed Martin Collection has since been extended with several versions of its wellreceived Limited Edition Valjoux Automatic Chronograph.

Luminox Original Navy SEAL 3901 is seen in blockbuster movie Ocean’s Eleven.

BECOMING A TRULY GLOBAL BRAND 2002 The US Bobsleigh and Skeleton Teams win six medals during the Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games. The teams wore co-branded Luminox Navy SEAL Colormark watches 3051 and 3957.

2003 Luminox opens its first mono-brand store in Tokyo. Luminox now has four mono-brand stores in Japan.

2004 Another big screen appearance for Luminox, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson wears a Luminox Ultimate Navy SEAL chronograph 8301 in movie Walking Tall.

2005 Luminox creates the first Lockheed Martin SR-71 Blackbird™ Limited Edition timepieces.

2006 Ronnie and Andre Bernheim, owners of the Swiss watch manufacturer Mondaine Watch Ltd., and with a long history in the Swiss watch making industry, acquire 50% of the Luminox company shares. Their vast experience in global brand building, strong connection to distributors worldwide and great reputation in the watch trade was the start of Luminox becoming a large international brand.

2007 Launch of the Navy SEAL Colormark 3051 Series - the evolution of the original Navy SEAL timepieces – soon to become the best-selling series of Luminox watches.

With the Colormark Series Luminox introduced a new Carbon Compound for its case material; high-tech Carbon reinforces the case to make it stronger and lighter.

This high-tech material is frequently used in racing cars, airplanes and spaceships.

Professionals around the world choose it because of its perfect combination of light weight, strength and durability.

Carbon Compound does not get hot in warm temperatures or cold in cold climates and, for undercover missions, the matte finish material is also an important benefit.

Luminox also debuts a specially hardened scratch-resistant mineral crystal of 550-650 Vickers, approximately 20% harder than conventional mineral watch crystals.

Luminox expands its presence globally to more than 50 countries and becomes a truly global brand.

Luminox becomes the exclusive watch partner for SXC (Space Expeditions Corporation). Long active in the realms of SEA, AIR and LAND, Luminox now added a fourth dimension to its collection - SPACE.

2009 Luminox partners with counter terrorism expert and undersea explorer Scott Cassell.

Cassell is a dive professional and relies on Luminox watches as part of his essential diving gear. As a man with high ideals, he is steadfastly committed to his missions, with one clear goal: to protect the world’s oceans and their inhabitants.

Launched as the brand approached its 20th anniversary, the Essential Gear campaign addresses consumers outside the military and law enforcement niche while maintaining our heritage. It invites peak performers, athletes and outdoorsmen of every kind into the Luminox family.

2010 Luminox is proud to introduce its 50 bar (500 meter / 1500 feet) Deep Dive Automatic Series, Essential Gear for serious divers and a certified watch for use by professionals - complying with the strict and extremely high standards of ISO 6425 for diving watches.

2011

Luminox had the opportunity to develop a new series of watches with upgraded features and again collaborated with Navy SEALs, both active duty and retired. This partnership resulted in the A.N.U. (Authorized for Navy Use) Series.

CELEBRATING ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY AND STILL GROWING

2014 Luminox celebrates its 25th anniversary and continues to expand its product range!

Luminox announces the SXC GMT Space Series, the first series in the new SXC Space Collection designed with input from test pilots and astronauts. These GMT watches in an ultra-light weight Carbon Compound or Stainless Steel are suitable for adventurers on Earth and in space.

2015 Luminox is proud to announce that its partnership with SXC (currently known as XCOR Space Expeditions) has been extended to XCOR Aerospace®, and Luminox is now the official watch partner of XCOR Aerospace®.

Luminox initiates the Luminox Special Operations Challenge (LSOC): honoring its heritage, Luminox partners with retired Navy SEALs to offer civilians the chance to train like a Navy SEAL for a day - a challenging day that combines high adrenaline and action as well as great fun.

All Luminox Hour, Minute, and Second hands are made of hardened aluminum rendering the hands lighter and the watch movement more shock resistant.

2016 Luminox becomes an official licensing partner of the Navy SEALs. “It is an absolute honor to have an ongoing relationship with the SEALs since 1992, and to be selected by U.S. Navy SEAL Commanders to design and supply watches for some of the most elite and respected Special Forces in the world. It is particularly exciting that two generations of SEALs, first in 1992 and again in 2013, arrived at the same conclusion and chose Luminox as their watch of choice. Becoming their official watch licensee formalizes this ongoing relationship,” say Luminox owners.

Launch of the Master Carbon SEAL 3800 Series and the introduction of a case reinforced with 40% carbon long bars - the forefront of materials innovation!

Andre and Ronnie Bernheim reach an agreement with Luminox founder, Barry Cohen, to purchase his shares in Luminox including its American distribution company Lumondi, Inc. The Bernheim brothers now own the Luminox companies and brand in their entirety.

2017 New Swiss-Made law: The new SwissMade law came into effect as of January 2017 and all Luminox Watches continue to fulfil the new Swiss-Made regulations.

Launch of the Navy SEAL 3500 Series the latest evolution of the Navy SEAL watches – honoring the legacy of these elite teams.

Luminox partners with Tough Viking to create the next generation of LSOC events - the LSOC powered by Tough Viking. With its obstacles designed together with the Swedish elite maritime unit, Tough Viking is a natural fit for Luminox. As official timekeeper of the T.V. series, Luminox provides sports & outdoor enthusiasts with an opportunity to really push their limits and constantly test our watches under extreme conditions!

Launch of the Leatherback Sea Turtle Series. The classic Luminox case design with the protected crown balanced by an opposite outcropping and four prominent horns has often been compared to the shape of a turtle; the now iconic Luminox case design is referred to as the “TurtleShape” case.

BY THE NAVY SEALS Navy SEALs require a sense of security that their gear will work when needed. Luminox honors the legacy of these elite teams by designing watches conceived with Navy SEALs input over the years and manufactured in a way that leverages the most advanced technology.

The Original Luminox Navy SEAL watch, first introduced in 1994, is the timepiece that put Luminox on the map. The 3050 series still had all the main features that were favored by the SEALS on the Original 3000 Series. The case and the uni-directional rotating bezel are made of Carbon Compound, resulting in an attractive yet incredibly light and durable timepiece. The crystal is scratch-resistant, tempered mineral glass and the double gasket stainless steel crown enables water resistance to 20ATM. In addition, its updated design with a larger case and larger opening made the 3050 even more readable. Thicker than its predecessor, its tougher look turned this timepiece into a real icon.

In 2013, the SEALs decided to re-evaluate watch brands. They arrived at the same conclusion as in 1992 and again chose Luminox, confirming Luminox as Essential Gear for the SEALs, both active duty and retired. THE CREATIVE PROCESS

FROM INSPIRATION TO DESIGN CREATION The example of the new 3500 Navy SEAL Series

In order to create a new watch series, designers need to collect and work from several ingredients.

WHAT ARE THESE INGREDIENTS? First of all, designers must understand and capture the nature, the essence and the spirit of the brand, the brand DNA. Also, designers must aggregate all inputs provided within the briefing coming from the Luminox team. This may include the sizes, the materials, the price bracket, the targeted end consumer and many others items.

The Luminox identity is strong which enables us to create iconic designs and to make Luminox a very unique brand in the watch world.

CREATIVE PROCESS

PHASE 1 – Development of Design Concepts During the first phase of the creation process, Studio Divine submits watch case drawings along with 2D renderings of dials, and develops several design options in order to offer a wide array of choice in response to the initial briefing.

The Luminox team selects one design option which will then guide the aesthetic of the project until completion.

PHASE 2 – Concept Development Studio Divine then fine tunes the aesthetic of the watch working on the watch case from all possible angles. All details are finalized including watch straps and bracelets, case backs, color combinations, to create consistency in the watch series and the brand collection as a whole.

PHASE 3 - 3D Rendering A wax prototype is produced in order to check and confirm the volume of the watch on a 1:1 scale and from there, start the technical development.

This modelling also enables Luminox to work with their vendors and start sourcing the various watch components for production, such as the case, dial, hands, crystal, straps, etc.

Once these three steps are completed, it’s time to receive the new series! If required, adjustments will be made before moving on to the final production.

LUMINOX INTRODUCES THE NAVY SEAL STEEL Built Tough for Extreme Adventure

Expanding upon its redesign of the hugely successful Navy SEAL watches, Luminox debuts the Navy SEAL Steel 3250 Series presenting five different models, including a blackout version. The handsome new design has the iconic Luminox ‘turtle-shaped’ case, with raised numbers and indices on the dial, and alternating brushed and high polish stainless steel accents on the case and bezel.

As with all Luminox watches, the muscular 45 mm stainless steel case is designed to stand up to extreme conditions. Its unidirectional rotating bezel and Sapphire Crystal with anti-reflective coating protect the dial. The steel series have a screw-down crown and case back ensuring water resistance to 200 meters and is available on a solid-link stainless steel bracelet, black genuine leather band or gray webbing strap.

The formal navy blue dial and blue strap combination is a classic that never goes out of style.

Many companies make watches with 200 meters water resistance, but 500 meters / 50 Bar is much more challenging and as a result separates the Luminox Deep Dive from the pack. The Undersea Voyager Project (UVP) is a notfor-profit public benefit company for Oceanic Research and Educational Outreach. Undersea explorer Scott Cassell is on a mission to bring the ocean’s mysteries to the surface.

It all happened pretty quickly. Five minutes after diving into the warm waters off the coast of Baja in the Sea of Cortez, a swarm of five-footlong Humboldt squids attacked Scott Cassell. They smashed his camera into his face, wrapped a tentacle around his arm, and bit him on the wrist.

Then, the beasts dragged him deeper into the abyss so fast that his eardrum imploded from the pressure. After somehow freeing himself and getting back to the surface, Cassell, who was working as an undersea cameraman at the time, wasn’t frightened. His shoulder was dislocated, and he was more than a bit roughed up. But he was also hooked. The experience, as violent as it was, was also transcendent. He had finally found his true calling, that of an undersea explorer out to find answers to what goes on under the world’s seas.

Fast-forward 20 years, and Cassell, now 55, has spent the past two decades diving, filming, producing, and sometimes even starring in various shows about ocean life for National Geographic, BBC, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and History Channel, including a return to Baja to film the squids. He turned a boyish fascination with Jacques Cousteau into a 30-plus-year diving career that’s seen him spend more than 15,000 hours underwater. That works out to nearly two years of his life. He’s been a Special Operations combat diver and holds the record for the longest distance traveled underwater by a diver: 52 miles. One would think he’s seen it all, but he’s quick to tell you that 98 percent of the ocean is still unexplored.

According to Cassell, a big reason for the blank space in humanity’s knowledge of the ocean is technology. The stuff we need to explore the ocean is often too expensive for the scientific community to obtain – much like rocketing into space, going underwater requires specialized, purpose-built equipment. Hence the Underwater Voyager Project (UVP), the multifaceted nonprofit Cassell founded in 2005, which has two main goals: to create some of the most advanced scuba 26

gear and submersibles in the water and to team up with oceanographers and marine biologists to advance our understanding of the deep.

“All professions – climbers, doctors, scientists – require their own essential gear,” Cassell says.

“Mine is just as complicated.” And homemade.

Between raising money and awareness for UVP and diving, he can often be found in his garage tinkering with exotic gear or sanding the fiberglass hulls of his latest submersible.

From that tinkering, he’s developed an armored, electrified underwater dive suit to protect him from the aforementioned giant squids. He’s also working on what he’s dubbed Wolf Packs: diving helmets and tanks in hard plastic cases with built-in lights to help team members keep track of each other, modeled after, of all things, the battle suits from the video game Halo. He’s also teamed up with several engineers and technicians to build a manned submarine, Great White, which can transport and support two divers working outside the vessel for up to three hours through 50-footlong air hoses.

Right now he’s finishing up work on the Sea Wolf, an open-cockpit sub with a roll cage on top that carries three hours’ worth of extra air tanks. It looks more like a jet fighter than a sub, which, in a way, it is. “We built it to ‘fly’ up to 300 feet underwater at six knots per hour (roughly seven mph) and turn and move like a big fish,” he says. In this case, the big fish are great white sharks that he plans to observe and follow for dozens of miles off the coast of San Francisco later this year.

“The idea is to travel with a shark at shark speed and give scientists the opportunity to see how they travel. Up until now, observing sharks has always been about getting them to come to us,” he says. “We really have no idea how they operate on their own – and if we have a permit to tag one along the way, we can.”

tested to pull off the UVP’s ever-growing list of missions. “I get a question that needs an answer, and then I go to work on figuring out what inventions I need to find an answer,” says Cassell, who collaborates with a constantly expanding network of scientists from places such as San Diego’s Scripps Institute of Oceanography and Cal State East Bay. He averages 10 missions a year if he has the funding, ranging from the aforementioned tracking of great white sharks to mapping the floor of Fallen Leaf Lake, an alpine body of water south of Lake Tahoe where he believes geothermal vents on the lake bottom could be hosting freshwater life forms that no one’s ever witnessed.

But his biggest mission, one he concedes he’ll never finish, is the systematic removal of “ghost nets” from the waters offshore of California and Oregon. “We use our submarine, Great White, to

go down to depths of 300 feet, looking for drift nets that either came loose on the open ocean and drifted into shallower water or were snagged on reefs and ripped free and now lie off the coast where they’re trapping and killing sea mammals and sea life by the thousands,” Cassell says. With his team and sub, he’ll be able to survey several miles per dive, cataloging and pulling the nets and fishing lines from the water.

If UVP’s lofty goals, all the James Bond-like equipment, and even Cassell’s Special Forces background all sound like ingredients for an incredible action movie with an altruistic hero at its heart, you’re probably right. And maybe it’ll happen someday. But as Cassell crosses into middle age, he’s most focused on inspiring the next generation. “I’m looking for today’s and tomorrow’s heroes who are selflessly trying to do something to benefit the ocean’s health.”

TIME TO PUSH YOUR LIMITS! RACE REPORT FROM THE TOUGH VIKING STOCKHOLM OLYMPIC STADIUM,

BY WILDA NILSSON The water in the large tank is very cold and mixed with ice cubes. We get in, dive under a beam and crawl back out. Completely soaked and freezing we keep going. More than 5 000 people are running the Tough Viking Stockholm Olympic Stadium race today. I am one of them. My name is Wilda Nilsson and I participated in the race on 8 May in Stockholm.

This is the story of how it felt to participate in my first obstacle course race ever. It certainly won’t be the last.

Having gotten out of the ice tank I continue along the track taking it slow in the beginning and focusing on my goal: to get through the race no matter what. Climbing over walls that tilt towards you, carrying heavy jerricans and crawling through muddy ditches turned out to be hard but surprisingly fun. Whilst Elites have to overcome all obstacles alone, the rest of us can work together in teams.

Since my team mate was sick I ended up running alone but there is a definite feeling of solidarity amongst the participants and everyone looks out for each other.

Wilda is a 29 years old Swedish citizen.

She works as a Marketing consultant and photographer and runs her own company with 2 employees.

In July 2017, Wilda will be starting the military basic training which will be ongoing for 11 months. Wilda wants to have a job that truly makes a difference and to contribute to others as well as being a part of team and challenging herself.

Almost 10 km through mud, fire and freezing water. The Tough Viking Stockholm Olympic Stadium was my first obstacle course race and the perfect challenge for me before joining the Swedish Armed Forces.

TOUGH STORIES

The Tough Viking obstacles are massive and consist of fire, water, electricity, mud, monkey bars, net cage, vertical walls and nets, and barbed wire set out along a challenging route. To me this seemed like a fun challenge that would also be a part time goal in my training towards joining the Swedish army this summer.

Thoughts of giving up never crossed my mind during the race even though I failed the obstacles spinning wheels and the vertical rope climb. I also fell down from the mega monkey bars into the muddy water below. Since I ran just for fun and to gain experience I tried these obstacles 2-3 times and ran the punishment laps required of those who fail an obstacle, thinking that I will have to work on more upper body strength as well as technique.

The obstacles are designed together with the Swedish elite maritime special forces unit known as Kustjägarna. Strength, endurance and coordination are necessary in order to get through the challenging race. However, the most important thing is having the mind set that you will push through. Regarding the equipment I wore a pair of old trainers, compression clothes from Skins that dries fast, simple rubber gloves and my Luminox Black Ops 8881.

If an obstacle is too hard it is possible to run laps and / or do burpees / pushups instead. The most difficult moment for me was to realize that I could not get up onto the super ramp despite reaching the top of the hanging rope twice. Help from a team mate would have made the difference since I did not have the arm strength left this late in

the race to pull myself up. That was extremely disappointing and I look forward to revenging myself on that particular obstacle in the future.

After having run more than 8 km and gotten through more than 20 obstacles I can finally see the Olympic Stadium in central Stockholm again.

We run down the steps and into the stadium, the Luminox Atlas Stones are still left before we can cross the finish line. Each stone weighs 60 kg (women) or 80 kg (men) and you have to heave them up and on to a Luminox branded oil drum.

The audience is cheering us on as we lift the heavy stones before climbing over a high wall and over a huge net cage. I loved all of the net climb obstacles - those were pure joy for me. Pushing through the last 100 meters of running before the finish line gives such a rush and receiving the finisher medal feels amazing. I finished the race in roughly 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Later, on the podium, the race winners Martin Stjernlöf (elite male) and Yoie Bohlin (elite female) are each awarded a Luminox 3501 Tough Viking Special Edition watch. During the spring 8-10 km races are held in Scandinavian Gothenburg, Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki as well as in France and Russia. All building towards the grand 15 km race at Djurgården August 26th in Stockholm, Sweden where several Luminox teams will participate.

Until then I will start my training in the army and I will also work extra hard on back, arm and grip strength before the 15 km race. Tough Viking Djurgården will definitely push my limits. By now I am completely hooked on obstacle course racing and training. Will we meet at the next race?

THE WARRIOR'S WATCH

THE WARRIOR’S WATCH As an Army officer, I had to have the most rugged timepiece available. I bought a Luminox Navy SEAL watch in 1994 for practical reasons as much as for aesthetic ones. It was new on the market, the hour markings and second hand were self-illuminating. Pure genius. This was no gimmick, combat medic friends of mine explained how these watches were the latest piece of “must have” gear for anyone working in emergency medicine. Why? The reason was simple. The second hand was clearly visible in low light conditions and total darkness. This enables one to take a critical vital sign, an accurate heart rate. This ability would be useless, however, if the timepiece could not stand up to the rigors of field use.

After I learned that a Luminox was the only watch to survive real world field testing by SEALs, I was sold. The depth rating on my new watch was 200 meters and I knew the SEALs must have pushed it to its limits during underwater operations.

Of course, I had to test it for myself and I was pleased to be able to read the watch from any angle in any lighting conditions at any depth.

It ended up being the watch that I wore on every military operation I was involved in until I was forced to retire for medical reasons in 2004 following a lengthy deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. It was during that

deployment that I had the opportunity to put that luminous second hand to the best use I can think of helping to save a human life.

I remember the night well. The silence and cover of darkness were suddenly pierced by the deafening roar of an earth-shakingly loud explosion instantly followed by a large fireball.

The silence was shortly broken again by the all too familiar cry of “Medic!!!”. Our Medical Sergeant quickly made his way to the first of two causalities.

I’ve had cross training in emergency medicine, so I handled the second soldier who I quickly discovered was badly burned on his face and torso.

Assessing our situation, I decided that we immediately required a MEDEVAC helicopter en route to our location.

During my medical assessment, I quickly exposed the face of my watch and used the glowing second hand to mark time while I took an initial heart rate. As expected, it was sky high. It would have been impossible to have provided an accurate number to the incoming flight medics without the aid of my Luminox watch.

With more information, an inbound medical team knows better how to prepare for the casualty.

The Tigers were formed over 20 years ago and is firmly established as one of the top parachute display teams within the United Kingdom. The Tigers are the flagship team for the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, whose seniority stems from the Tangier Regiment of 1661 and thus has the distinction of being the senior English Infantry Regiment of the line. Soldiers of the Regiment are recruited from Kent, Surrey, Sussex, London, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands.

Members of The Tigers consist of volunteers from various battalions of the regiment.

WATER RESISTANCE

WATER RESISTANCE Frequently Asked Questions Water resistance of wrist watches is one of the most discussed topics by consumers. This interview with our in-house expert, Martin Eugster, Quality Manager at Luminox, provides useful insights to all watch lovers.

CAN A WATCH BE 100% WATERPROOF? Never use the term ‘100% waterproof’! Firstly, a watch cannot be water proof but only water resistant. Only something which is indestructible can be waterproof. Secondly, a watch either is or is not water resistant, there is nothing like 70% water resistance.

WHAT DOES ‘200 METERS’ MEAN? Water resistance is stated as a depth (Bar, ATM, meters or feet) this means that it has been tested in our factory to withstand a static pressure, for a short period only, at the stated depth. The actual water pressure on the watch during use is greater than the static pressure, for instance when diving into a pool the pressure on the watch is greater at the impact point with the water. A water resistance rating of 20 Bar, 20 ATM or 200 meters means that the pressure applied to the watch is equivalent to the pressure it would be under at a depth of 200 Meters. It doesn’t indicate the depth to which you can dive with the watch.

IS MY WATCH REALLY WATER RESISTANT? The correct answer is “Yes, but…”! because water resistance doesn’t last forever. 100% of the Luminox watches leaving our factory have passed the water resistance testing. Temperature fluctuations and external influences, such as solvents, cosmetics, dust or shocks, caused by impacts or sudden movements, can fundamentally and suddenly affect water-resistance, even if the shock happens on the very first day of wearing a new watch. A watch can sustain a shock to the crown or crystal without necessarily leaving a visible mark, but the fragile parts can be damaged and the watch will no longer be water resistant. The seals and sealing systems in particular are subject to wear and tear and natural ageing, e.g. gaskets at the crystal, crown and case back.

CAN A WATER RESISTANT WATCH SHOW SOME FOG INSIDE THE GLASS? Under certain circumstances condensation may form on the inside of the crystal. This is a physical phenomenon caused by the natural humidity inside the watch. Condensation can appear when the watch is exposed to sudden changes in temperature exposing the watch to hot sun and then going swimming or taking a hot shower. Fogging may occur if the inside humidity is over 50%. As long as the fog is not caused by a leak it will disappear as soon the watch is in normal temperature range again.

IS A WATCH, TESTED TO 200 METERS, AUTOMATICALLY A DIVING WATCH? No. A true diving watch goes through stringent tests defined by NIHS (Normes de l’Industrie Horlogère Suisse) or by ISO (International Organization for Standardization), which are much tougher than the water resistance tests for watches for normal use.

This means that only watches which have passed the special tests for diving watches should be called diving watches, all other watches are purely water resistance tested watches from 1 Bar to 20 Bar/ ATM typically. Very few watches from very few

brands have passed the diving watch tests. Diving watches use screw-down crowns, a screwed in case back sealed with a robust gasket and have a thick crystal to withstand the high pressure underwater.

Do not operate the watch in the water except for moving the unidirectional bezel if equipped.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A NORMAL CROWN AND A SCREWDOWN CROWN? A normal crown includes one, two or even three gaskets which form a seal between the case body and the crown itself. If you use the crown for operating the watch, the gaskets will become worn and will eventually leak. Screw-down crowns have an additional gasket on the bottom of the crown which is compressed each time you screw it down creating an additional seal. Provided that the crown is screwed down properly and firmly, a screw-down crown protects the watch against leaking and against the inadvertent operation of the crown.

CAN A WATER DEPTH OF LESS THAN 1 METER BE DANGEROUS FOR A WATER RESISTANT WATCH? Yes it can! A watch may not leak at 50 meters pressure but leaks when the pressure is only at 0.5 meters. This can happen if a case back screw is not tightened adequately or the crown gaskets are slightly damaged. At greater depths the pressure on the watch case increases sealing the watch tight while it remains under pressure. A watch with badly fixed case back screws could be water resistant at 20 Bar/ATM, but not at 0.1 Bar/ATM which is why all our watches are tested in a vacuum (low pressure) and at pressures of 3, 5, 10 Bar/ATM.
