OFF TO THE PROVINCIALS!

The Charles Bloom Senior Girls Basketball team will be representing the Okanagan zone at the BC Girls A Provincials, hosted by Unity Christian of Chilliwack, March 6th – 9th. With a record of 19 wins and 2 loses, the girls are going in ranked #5 in the province. They clinched the North Zone Champion title, as well as won the Seaton Invitational, CBSS Invitational and Crosszone Championship in Kelowna. After a heartbreaking loss last season in their qualifying game, the girls have worked hard this season to show resiliency and versatility and have risen to the challenges set out by their coaches. They have had to travel extensively to gain experience at competing at a higher level. It has been an emotional roller coaster, as the team has had to deal with several injuries and the knowledge that it is Coach Katherine Norman’s last year coaching after an impressive 40 years, with the bulk of it being at Charles Bloom. Her legacy at CBSS started back in 1988 when she coached her assistant, Jennie Currie, with that team making it to Provincials in 1990. Players Meghan Mulholland, Gillian MacPherson and Kindra Peterson began their journey with Coaches Norman and Currie in grade 9 as they played several games with the senior team. Ellie Hymas and Jessica Verhage also began their development with S U N D AY

Norman and Currie when in Grade 8. After convincing Summer Meger, Shae Jewitt and Esther Drysdale to join the team in Grade 10, their junior team with Hally Campbell, Marissa Blaney, Maxine Schibli, and Arella Eyzaguiree was the first CBSS junior team to ever go to Valleys. Erika Hymas was recently brought on to the team as one of the things that Norman is known for is mentoring young players. The impact that Norman has had on the basketball culture at Charles Bloom is evident when you look in the stands. Many former players and fans come cheer our teams on, as well as come back to

watch her perform! Going into this competition, Coach Currie is optimistic about the girls’ chances at retaining their ranking, “The girls are making smart plays and reading the floor well. All season long, they have been raising the bar for themselves and every girl has shown growth. Each game is played with pride and intensity.” Coach Norman added, “We are so proud of our girls, not only as athletes, but also for what they do in their academics and in the school community. They are true leaders. Their dedication to the sport and to each other is incredible. They continuously surprise us with what they are able to do both as a team and as individuals.” The team would like to thank their parents and community for all of their support and encouragement over the years.
