Congratulations to the Lumby Midget Stars,winners of the 2019 Monashee Classic. For the second year in a row the Lumby ladies went undefeated. Jordyn Pryor scored her first ever goal. Paige McLaughlin scored her first goal as a Star. Goalie Tyra Cunningham played 2 1/2 games and never allowed a single goal. Every player for the Stars had a goal or an assist. Quintin O’Neill had a hat trick, Ryder Quibell 2 goals, Kolby English 1 goal and Riley Dewhirst had a sniper from the point and one assist. Jace Catt, Faith Seehaver both picked up to assists while Garret Louis had one. James Wraight had the win between the pipes. Dewhirst received the hardest worker hard hat for the game.

The Best Detoxification System – Phase By Phase

By Donna Easto Toxin, it’s a term we use freely, but do we understand exactly what constitutes a toxin? Basically, toxins are biological in nature meaning they’re produced by microorganisms, animals, insects, and plants that can be a danger to your body when inhaled, ingested, injected or absorbed into the body. Toxicants, on the other hand, are chemical products we may encounter in our day-to-day living such as in over-the-counter drugs, pesticides, body products, and cosmetics.

Both toxins and toxicants can accumulate in your body and can contribute to obesity, hormone disruption, cell damage, and interfere with your innate immune responses. For the purpose of this article, we’ll be referring to both chemical and biological poisons as toxins.

As covered in the last article, our natural detoxification system processes toxins for elimination in three phases. While the liver is the major organ, elimination also occurs through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymphatic system, and skin. Each phase is distinguished by its own set of cellular proteins or enzymes: Phase I: transformation enzymes known as

CYP-450enzymes; Phase II conjugation or attachment enzymes; and, Phase III: transport proteins.

Phase 1 is the Enzymatic Transformation phase.

This either neutralizes a toxin or transforms fat-soluble toxins into easier-to-handle, water-soluble toxins.

Most toxins are fat-soluble and tend to build up in the fatty tissues of the body.

Phase 2 is the Enzymatic Conjugation phase. This is where the water-soluble toxins from phase 1 are attached to compounds such as sulfur or amino acids that allow further processing to make them easier to excrete out of the body.

Phase 3 involves the elimination of the transformed, bound toxins from phase 1 and 2. This is where toxins are pumped out of the cells for excretion by the kidneys or in bile. However, as we discuss in the next article, this is not a perfect process and highlights how important it is to support your natural detoxification system. It can’t function effectively without our partnership.

Submitted by Colleen Fielding I went on the Eagle and Swan count this year four of us did Mable Lake Park, Rawlings Lake (this was frozen over so they were no birds here) and White Valley. The weather was okay but could have been better as it was pretty foggy. On this count we saw : 5 adult Trumpeter Swans, 3 Juvenile Swans (pictured) 4 Golden Eagles, 1 Juvenile, 10 Bald Eagles and 1 Juvenile. It was a fun day.

On January 22nd there will be a presentation on Parkinson Disease. Parkinson’s is a long-term degenerative disorder that attacks the central nervous system and can greatly affect motor skills. Although there is no cure for a Parkinson’s diagnosis, there are treatments that can help relieve the symptoms.

This upcoming seminar will provide clear explanation of the changes in the body while recognizing signs and symptoms. Treatment options and supports will also be examined and discussed.

On February 6th there will be bone density screening tests available. Often times people do not know they have osteoporosis until a bone breaks unexpect-

edly. This screening can help you and your physician identify your level of bone density. Each individual will be provided a consultation with a certified trained professional. Just a note, that this screening is not for anyone already diagnosed with osteoporosis.

On February 20th the Lumby Health Centre will be hosting another hearing screening clinic performed by a professional audiologist.

Each of these events is free of charge but screenings and presentations do require either a booked appointment or pre-registration. For more information on location and times please contact the Lumby & District Health Services Society at (250) 547-9741.

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday an amazing 3 course lunch is served at the Seniors Drop In to a group of 20-30 seniors. We are in need of some volunteer cooks servers, dishwashers and grocery shoppers. Our dedicated group of volunteers will help train you, following food safe guidelines, for as long as you need it.

Okanagan 2019 Property Assessments in the Mail

In the next few days, owners of more than 208,000 properties throughout the Okanagan can expect to receive their 2019 assessment notices, which reflect market value as of July 1, 2018.

“The majority of residential home owners within the Okanagan can expect a +5% to +15% change compared to last year’s assessment,” says Thompson Okanagan Assessor Katrina LeNoury. “Local communities and individual housing may experience changes greater or lesser than the average, as market values are based on local market demand and conditions.”

As B.C.’s trusted provider of property assessment information, BC Assessment collects, monitors and analyzes property data throughout the year. The table below indicates the Okanagan’s estimated range of percentage changes to 2019 assessment values by property type compared to 2018. Please note property assessments may vary by jurisdiction or municipality within the region.

Overall, the Okanagan’s total assessments increased from about $108 billion in 2018 to $118.6 billion this year. A total of about $2.5 billion of the region’s updated assessments is from new construction, subdivisions and rezoning of properties. The Okanagan area forms a part of BC Assessment’s Thompson Okanagan region and includes the Shuswap (Sicamous to Sorrento) in the north, then south through all of the Okanagan communities to the Canada/US border at Osoyoos and west to Princeton.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Exotic & Beautiful This is a Golden Pheasant (also known as a Chinese Pheasant, or a Red Golden Pheasant) beautiful right!

I had never seen one before, as of course they are not from around here. I met someone recently close by here that has them in their yard. Don’t worry they are protected under chicken wire and a shelter, so that the birds of prey and other predators can’t get them.

You see a lot of colorful birds, but the male Golden Pheasant out shines them all, as he is one of the birds that have the most brilliant colors of all the birds.

Their long luxurious tail can range from 20 - 30 inches long. The males have a beautiful golden yellow crest, with just a hint of red at the very tip.Bright red body with a patch of sapphire blue, some red, and yellow on their bodies with a yellow eye, just a very colorful bird. Although their beautiful bright colors don’t start to show until they are about in their second year. But

yet they are sexually mature at about one year. The female is called a hen, her plumage is not colorful at all more like a mottled brown, this is to protect her in the wild. Both the male and female have yellow legs and beaks. They like to eat, grains, leaves, insects, earthworms, snails, and spiders. They can fly, but not very well as they are quite clumsy in flight, so they like to run instead of flying. They are a very timid bird, and like to hide in dark places. They are known to be able to detect danger easily and quickly. They can sense unusual hazards, and threats.

When ready to mate, the male will make a very elaborate display, spreading his neck feathers over his bill and head looking like he is wearing a cape. The display is very colorful.

The female will lay about 6-12 eggs usually around April. The eggs are incubated for about 22-23 days.

The eggs are hatched by about 3 weeks.

In China these beautiful Golden Pheasants are a in the wild they can live about 5 -6 years, while in sign of good luck, good fate, and prosperity. captivity they can live 15 or more years.

$1000 Youth Work in Trades Award Presented to Dual-Credit Students gram and started on his journey as a framer. When asked what his advice to others would be: “Start thinking about a career in trades early. There are so many great job opportunities.”

Nick, Jeremy and Rowan started in the Youth Train in Trades program where they took Level 1 technical training in their chosen trade at Okanagan College, with their tuition paid for by School District 22 (with funding from the Industry Training Authority and Ministry of Education). They then continued on in the Youth Work in Trades program where they secured employment and received practical training in

When Nick Peters, Jeremy Deschamps, Rowan Wood and Ian Augustin started the Youth Work in Trades Program, they didn’t quite know what to expect, but through the encouragement of School District 22 Career Coordinators, these young men found their passion…and a career.

Through the Youth Work in Trades Program, students will receive work-based training of a trade apprenticeship while still in high school. They earn credits towards their high school diploma, log 480 training hours toward their trade credential and have the potential to win a $1000 award.

Nick Peters had aspirations of becoming a heavy duty mechanic or auto service technician in grades 9 and 10. But as the years passed, he realized that wasn’t the trade he wanted to build a career in. “Working with the career coordinator at my school was a great experience and so helpful.” Nick took his trades training in plumbing and has already had a lot of great opportunities. He is currently working for Fox & Sons Plumbing with a goal of attaining his required hours and ticket.

Jeremy Leary decided to focus on the trade of welding after spending a couple summers welding with his uncle. When presented with the idea of the dual credit training, Jeremy thought “It was a great opportunity to do something I’ve always enjoyed doing, so I jumped right on it.” Jeremy’s future plans include finishing off the last level of his apprenticeship, continue progressing in the trade and eventually becoming a millwright.

Rowan Wood didn’t put a lot of thought into his career after graduating. It was actually during some extra curricular activities where Rowan met someone who introduced him to framing. With that introduction, Rowan joined the Youth Work in Trades Pro-

their apprenticeships. In both programs, these students earned high school credits towards graduation.

The hard work of these gentlemen paid off on Thursday evening, when Nick, Jeremy and Rowan were presented with the $1000 Youth Work in Trades Award, sponsored by the Industry Training Authority (ITA). (Ian was unable to attend the presentation as he is currently working in his field of carpentry on Vancouver Island.) The workplace skills gained through the ITA program have been invaluable to these students and we wish them all the best in their new careers.

Farm Workers Who Hand-Harvest Crops Get Rate Increase

Pat Duke Arena Renovation and Expansion Project Update

The Pat Duke Memorial Arena is getting an upgrade in order to better serve an increasing number of female participants in hockey and other ice sports.

As part of a community effort that began in 2016, residents and users came together and initiated fundraising to improve amenities in the arena. As a result of these efforts, the Pat Duke Area won Kraft Hockeyville 2016, receiving $100,000 to put towards improving the facility.

“Due to an insufficient number of change rooms, female ice users have had inadequate facilities during co-ed ice times”, stated Tannis Nelson, Community Services Manager. “The arena also creates challenges for users with mobility issues, and due to its age, no longer meets accessibility standards.”

The Regional District of North Okanagan has held several meetings with stakeholders and users of the arena, and are currently finalizing the draft concept plan and costing for renovations and construction.

Once complete, the concepts will be brought forward to the community through an open house anticipated to be scheduled in February.

“The objective of this project is to achieve four new change rooms through expansion and renovation of the existing building, and two additional change rooms through renovation of the existing change room area”, stated Nelson. “The project also includes additional storage, upgraded referee facilities, and a heated lobby and viewing area.”
