Flood Analysis Floodplain Design scope

Academic Project Location: Ruhr River, German Time: Jun. 2021 Type: Individual work Instructor: Chunmei Li The Ruhr River Basin in Germany was affected by heavy rains in 2021, causing a series of disasters, such as floods and mudslides. The rainfall caused by the storm system in 18 hours is almost the usual rainfall in two months. The scale of the flood shocked climate scientists around the world because they directly linked this event to man-made climate change. In view of the above extreme climate, I carried out a design for the lower reaches of the Ruhr River, in order to reduce the impact of rainstorm on the river, city and ecology.

Fishing is not permitted in protected and breeding areas, near technical facilities and in reservoir sections dedicated to other purposes.

The residents of the Ruhr have a wealth of outdoor activities. Seasonal changes, the rise and fall of the river, whether it freezes or not, have all become elements for designing flexible nodes.

Landscape Bridge Academic Project Location: Hangzhou, China Time: May. 2021 Type: Individual work Instructor: Boris Yu With Qiantang river becoming the new center of Hangzhou city, both the river banks boasts of abundant green land resource such as Forest Park and CBD Park. However, the existing Fuxing Bridge and Qingchun Tunnel, which connect the two sides of the river, inhibit or even refuse people's active travel, while the subway completely blocks people from the river-view. Based on the pedestrian system, the landscape bridge connects the citizen square across the river and the Olympic sports center, which can promote the integration and intersection of the resources of the two sides. By breaking the 1KM distance, people no longer have to rely on cars to get to the library or gym across the river.

Exploded view The bridge is mainly divided into bridge deck, supporting structure and indoor construction space. The architectural space is integrated into the bridge body, enriching and perfecting the social function of the bridge.

Node Qianjiang Museum serves as a platform for displaying local culture and reviewing the historical development of both sides of the river. Citizens on both sides of the river are here to increase their sense of identity with the local culture.

Provide venues for public concerts, music festivals and other cultural activities to form a node for absorbing residents on both sides of the river.

The ramp of the venue is friendly to people with reduced mobility and cyclists, ensuring that the venue is open to all races and crowds.

SNOWSTORM TONIGHT Shelter Architecture Design Academic Project Location: Dallas, Texas, US Time: Oct. 2021 Type: Individual work Instructor: Boris Yu Twenty years ago, on Valentine’s Day, blizzard caused the collapse of the supply systems in Texas including energy, water and food. People who suffered the most were the most vulnerable: the elderly, people with health problems and disabilities - the marginalized communities in general. In fact, ethnic minority communities had been the hardest hit by the power outage caused by the storm.

Twenty years later, a new shelter spans the highway I-345, providing equal opportunities and resources to all citizens including those from Deep Ellum, the historically black communities.

Can human beings withstand the test of the wind and snow this time?

“ One River Plan” Academic Project Pearl River Flood Protection Planning Location: Pearl River, MS, US Instructor: G. Mathias Kondolf 2023 Group Work Jackson Mississippi suffers from repeat fluvial flooding along the main “life blood” of the city, the Pearl River.

Based on the protential risks of current plan “ One Lake Plan”, we propose a new plan——“One River Plan”.

“One River Plan” aims to restore floodplain capacity and reconnect river and community. Addressing Creekside flooding is a necessity and will require targeted restoration.

Unliked the destructive wildfires in California seen in the past five years alone, prescribed fired are a intentional risk reduction strategy to reduce fuel buildup and decrease the likelihood of serious hotter fires. To avoid typical adverse impacts from unplanned wildfires, prescribed fires are generally conducted when meteorological conditions are favorable, atmospheric conditions support adequate smoke dispersion, and wind patterns allow smoke to move away from sensitive areas.

Our proposal is trying to answer where, when and how often prescribed fire should be appled to Sea Ranch, CA.

San Francisco Downtown Street Network and Active Travel Research Academic Research Project Location: San Francisco, CA, US Instructor: Marta Gonzalez 2023 Individual Work Keywords: Green View Index, Active travel, Streetscape, Urban greenery, Deep learning, Object detection, Streetlevel photography This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of the suitability of the street network for active travel in downtown San Francisco, with a particular emphasis on the role of green canopy and street infrastructure.

The primary objective is to assess how these elements contribute to creating an environment conducive to walking and biking, thereby promoting sustainable urban mobility.

Expanding Service Range of EV Charging Stations based on Infrastructure Justice Academic Research Project Location: San Francisco, CA, US Instructor: Marta Gonzalez 2023 Group Work Keywords: Infrastructure Justice, P-median, Charging Station, Location, Service Area, Electric Vehicle The proposed research framework analyzes demographic factors and uses network analysis to identify guidelines for siting public EV charging stations in San Francisco. The framework prioritizes equitable distribution and considers future demand growth and policy support to prevent underserved communities from being left behind in the transition to electric vehicles.

Abstract The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is increasingly significant in the fight against climate change. Governments worldwide are implementing policies to promote their adoption, such as California's new regulation requiring automakers to deliver an increasing number of zero-emission vehicles each year, starting in model year 2026. However, the benefits of EVs are not equally distributed, and low-income and minority communities are often disproportionately affected by air pollution and lack of access to clean energy sources. Prioritizing the installation of EV charging stations in underserved areas is crucial to ensuring that all communities can benefit from clean energy.

This paper focuses on the need to prioritize the installation of public centralized electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in underserved areas, particularly low-income and minority communities. The study proposes a research framework consisting of three parts: investigating potential correlations between demographic factors and the availability of EV charging stations, identifying new public centralized EV charging station locations using a service area and p-median model, and planning for charging station site selection over time while taking into account EV charging station demand growth trends and policy support. The results of the study show that San Francisco does have a certain degree of uneven distribution of car charging stations, and its distribution is correlated with the distribution of low-income neighborhoods and minority neighborhoods. After the addition of 121 new charging stations, the distribution and service area coverage of the charging station network in San Francisco have been significantly improved. This approach ensures that all communities can benefit from clean energy and contributes to a cleaner, more equitable future for all.
