SK EduKasan Launches ‘EduHouse’ Project to Support Underprivileged Students

With the aim of providing assistance to the underprivileged learners, EduKasan, a youth-driven organization of Bagong Silangan Sangguniang Kabataan, launched its EduHouse project at Pocalari Compound, Brgy. Bagong Silangan on October 31.

The EduHouse is a unique horror house that changes its theme daily from October 31- November 3. Its primary purpose is not only to entertain visitors but also to raise funds to provide school uniforms and school supplies to students in need.

Zildjan Martinez, EduKasan’s Executive President, explained that the project was born out of the challenges faced by students who struggle to afford uniforms.

Schools are becoming stricter about wearing uniforms. Students who can’t afford them often arrive late because they have to sign in and explain their reasons before entering,”

- Zildjian Martinez (EduKasan President)

Despite the challenges of implementing the project, Martinez credited the success to the teamwork with Pocalari Homeowners Association (HOA) for the effective task delegation.

The project quickly gained popularity as people flocked to experience the ever-changing horror themes. However, accidents were inevitable, especially when visitors acted out of fear. EduKasan responded swiftly to handle the situations. Martinez said, reflecting on the experience.

Looking ahead, EduKasan has big plans for 2025, with many more projects in the pipeline. “This won’t be the only initiative happening in the coming years. There’s a lot more to look forward to,” Martinez stressed during the interview.

BSHS STUDES TAKE NCAE

Grade 10 students of Bagong Silangan High School took the National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE) on Wednesday, Thursday, August 14-15.

The National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE), or Republic Act No. 11206, is an act establishing a career guidance and counselling program for all secondary schools and appropriating funds. NCAE was published by the Department of Education (DepEd), and it was first administered in 2007.

All Grade 10 students of Bagong Silangan High School took the test to assess their knowledge.

\Students were arranged alphabetically, and assigned to rooms, together with

proctors assigned to each class. The test was conducted for two consecutive days. The examination started with giving out one module with answer sheets for each student per day.

The first day of the examination started at 6:00 A.M. The second day started at 7:00 A.M. Proctors guided the students in answering the information provided in the answer sheetsNCAE covers the following: comprehension, mathematical ability, verbal ability, scientific ability, logical reasoning ability, and occupational interest inventory. The General Scholastic Aptitude (GSA) part checks how students do in reading, math, and thinking problems out. It points out what they are best at and where they might

need to work more.

This helps them think about what they might want to do after school. Meanwhile, the Occupational Interest Inventory of Students in Secondary Schools (OIISSS) is all about what jobs and tasks students find interesting

This information can help students match their school choices with jobs they might love in the long run.

NCAE is a mandatory nationwide standardized assessment which is a locally developed assessment tool essential for decision-making and career guidance. The National Capital Region administered the NCAE on August 15-16 school year 2024-2025 for both public and private schools. The examination was accomplished due to proctors attentiveness.

BSHS studes practice PISA quiz unit 31

Selected Bagong Silangan High School’s (BSHS) students from all grade levels took the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) practice test on October 8-9.

BSHS students joined those who answered the PISA practice test that was implemented across the country. They completed computer-based questionnaires in science within 30 minutes.

All grade 10 students of BSHS were required to take the test and were assigned to rooms alphabetically.

Morning and Afternoon session students took turns using the BSHS computer lab to answer the test.

The questionnaire contains multiple choice, enumeration, and reading comprehension.

Moreover, the Department of Education (DepEd) administers a pretest to 15-year-old learners from grade 7 and above as preparation for the PISA 2025.

Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development OECD led the conduct of the test. PISA aims to analyze the ability of students in terms

of Science, Reading, and Mathematics of 15-year-old students at an international level.

PISA aims to measure the students’ comprehension skills on a global scale.

DepEd is doing its best to strengthen students’ comprehension rate as the country ranked in the bottom four among 64 countries in PISA 2022. Schools Division Office-Quezon City (SDO-QC) is currently conducting training for students from New Era High School and San Bartolome High School who will take the incoming PISA test.

Based on the recent PISA test scores, Filipino students are weak in terms of Math, Reading, and Science.

Compared to 81 countries around the world, the Philippines currently ranks third lowest in science in the last PISA.

This test includes the three main subjects, which are Math, English, and Science.

This test helps to determine the weakness of Filipino learners in specific subjects and aims to improve them for worldwide standard.

Pisa test results as well as the higher proficiency level of Filipino students were hoped to improve this year.

QC-LGU implements ‘Tanggal Bara, Iwas Baha’ Program

QUEZON CITY, Philippines

— Quezon City Local Government Unit (QC-LGU) implemented the ‘Tanggal Bara, Iwas Baha’ program on Sunday, September 29, involving the city’s 142 barangays to strengthen flood mitigation.

QC-LGU prioritized the cleaning of the clogged drainage systems, sewers, street inlets, manholes, and interceptors to prevent flooding, Mayor Joy Belmonte said in an interview.

“The city government cannot do it alone; we need the help of our communities, led by our barangay councils, to reduce rainwater overflow and flooding in our streets.” Mayor Belmonte added.

The program focuses on areas particularly vulnerable to flooding. This includes barangays that experienced significant challenges during the recent Habagat and Typhoon Carina, such as Del Monte, Masambong, Bagong Silangan, Dona Imelda, Roxas, Tatalon, and Apolonio Samson.

As a direct result of climate change and the rapid shift in global temperature, sudden floods affected these areas every time a storm hits the city, leading to casualties and property destruction.

“Tanggal Bara, Iwas Baha” initiative is a collaborative effort involving the

Quezon City Department of Engineering (QCDE), the Barangay and Community Relations Department (BCRD), the Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Department (CCESD), and the Department of Sanitation and Cleanup Works (DSQC) of Quezon City. She added that the primary purpose of the project was to maintain the cleanliness of the school premises and minimize health risks caused by unclean environments.

The IAC collaborated with the Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O) Club, Campus Integrity Crusaders (CIC), and the Araling Panlipunan (AP) Club to ensure the success of the operation.

Ms. Nicolas acknowledged the collaboration, saying that it helped resolve one of their main challenges during the pre-implementation phase: the lack of active participants.

“This collaboration would efficiently get the job done. Along with this, the cooperation and camaraderie among advisers and officers will be strengthened,” she continued. This project emphasizes the importance of prioritizing school cleanliness. The clubs of Bagong Silangan High School collectively take action against uncleanliness, seizing every opportunity to make a positive impact.

NOW IS THE FUTURE - National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE) made its way to Grade 10 students in Bagong Silangan High School on August 14-15, 2024.

TTR dominates District 2 Confab

The True Reflections (TTR) and Ang Dalubwika dominated the district 2 Secondary Schools Press conference clinching top 1 overall best performing schools during the 2024 Congressional District II Secondary Schools Press Conference (DSSPC) held on Saturday, November 23, at Batasan Hills National High School (BHNHS).

Bagong Silangan High School claimed the top spot among nine participating schools in District II, earning their place in the Division Schools Press Conference ( DSPC WW With the theme “Fostering Inclusivity : Campus Journalism for a Diverse School Community,” 42 students from the English journalism team participated in the DSSPC.

Each individual category lasted one hour, while the group category for radio broadcasting was allotted two hours, and collaborative desktop publishing had a four-hour timeframe.

The event started at 7 a.m. and ended at 6: 30 p.m. with the announcement of winners and the ceremonial exit of colors.

Nathan Del Rosario, Editor-in-Chief of TTR, expressed mixed emotions regarding his performance. “I felt numb when my name was called as the 7th placer in sports writing, three ranks lower than my place last year. However, I was elated by our collaborative desktop publishing team’s success. We snagged every special award and emerged as the overall best team in District II. While the group victory is a proud moment, the pain of regressing in my individual category still lingers,” said Del Rosario.

This victory marked an

unforgettable milestone for Silanganians, particularly the campus journalists, as their dedication and rigorous training were recognized.

Following the DSSPC, the Division Secondary Schools Press Conference 2024 took place at Quezon City High School on December 6 and 7. The individual competitions, including News Writing, Feature Writing, Column Writing, Editorial Writing, Editorial Cartooning, Sports Writing, Photojournalism, and Mobile Journalism, were held on December 6. Collaborative desktop publishing and online desktop publication teams competed the following day.

Results were announced on December 14, with Associate Director VG Cambridge Domingo placing 10th in Feature Writing as the sole TTR representative to secure a spot at the division level.

BSHS Implements Attendance Monitoring System

Quezon City, Philippines — Bagong Silangan Highschool (BSHS) implemented an attendance monitoring sheet aimed to reduce students absenteeism and improve academic performance.

These attendance sheets are used for monitoring those students and sections that usually have high cases of cutting classes and absenteeism.

Cutting classes and unmonitored absence are two main problems that the school has been facing for a couple of school years now.

This was proposed by the School Principal, Dr. Marivic B. Francisco, this ensures accurate attendance records and also to notify the teachers, and parents about frequent absences of their children. This system was also imposed for the safety of those students who often cut classes and take absences to monitor their whereabouts, improving the overall monitoring of the school.

“Nakakahelp po yung monitoring sheets sa teachers para malaman ng advisers ,

subject teacher kung may problema ba student during classes, para rin po malaman kung gaano karami ang nag cucutting at kung sino sila para maayos kung ano mang problema nila bat sila umaabsent at nag cucutting,” said Jonamae E. Villasan, BSHS-SSLG Vice President.

SSLG officer collect these attendance sheets every month and hand them over to guidance for monitoring.

This will make it easier for parents and teachers to monitor and address possible concerns, such as learning difficulties and personal issues involving their own child.

- Alexis Gulla ( 10-Agoncillo President)

According to Alexis R. Gulla, Homeroom Class President of Grade 10 - Agoncillo said that the attendance sheets are very helpful as it emphasizes a proactive approach to education and puts the academic success and well-being of students first.

as I have been monitoring, possesses a great momentum, believe it or not. We cannot simply put great expectations from them, but rather we encourage and guide them in the world of campus journalism. As someone who won in the division press conference, I really did not see myself standing on the stage, and with that, I’ll be there guiding the next batch of campus journalists to take as many certificates, medals, trophies, and glory as they can. I hope to see the next batch soar high in their campus journalism, something I’m really excited to see someday,” VG Domingo said.

This taught important lessons and ignited the passion within them.

TTR’s triumph serves as a testament to the talent and dedication of Bagong Silangan High School’s campus journalists, inspiring future batches to aim for excellence in journalism.

BSHS uses ‘Team Teaching’ in the classroom

|Karyle Anne Solasco

Bagong Silangan High School (BSHS) utilized team teaching for the school year 2024-2025 due to classroom and facility shortage.

Team teaching combines two sections from sections 1–12 with two teachers managing the classrooms with 80 students.

Ms. Mary Grace D. Falcutila, Science teacher, said that this system has both advantages and disadvantages for teachers like her.

According to her, teachers can take turns teaching the students, making them feel less exhausted throughout the day, and when one teacher is absent, the other one can take charge as the advantage of team teaching.

The disadvantage,

however, is that teachers can have different ways and methods of teaching.

“Teaching is a passion; if there are changes in the curriculum, teaching modality, or classroom set-up, the teacher finds their way to cope and adjust for the betterment of the learners.

- Mary Grace Falcutila ( 10-Agoncillo Adviser)

It was also faced with backlash from students, as they suffer with health issues like ventilation and overcrowding.

This program was introduced and approved by the principal, Dr. Marivic B. Francisco.

It is still unknown wheter this system will still be implemented for the following school years.

How can we enhance the design of our lessons to make them a gift for our learners? How can I motivate my students so that each lesson becomes beneficial not only now but also in the future?” Dr. Marivic emphasized, “We are teachers. It’s hard, but when you feel how to be part of a student’s life, that’s when you’ll realize that being a teacher is not that hard. Embrace it. Embracing the duty of being a teacher always carries

responsibilities. We’ll face challenges, but with our dedication and love for our students, we’ll overcome them.”

Self - Expression or Vandalism?

Vandalism is a big problem in many schools, and Bagong Silangan High School (BSHS) is no different. It doesn’t just damage property, but it also makes the school environment worse.

Recently, graffiti was found in the restrooms at BSHS. Although no one has been caught yet, the problem is clear and needs to be dealt immediately.

In the restrooms at BSHS, it’s hard to miss the offensive words written on the walls. The cubicle doors are covered with bad language and inappropriate drawings. These messages are upsetting, including racial slurs, sexual words, and other rude content. This graffiti makes the school feel uncomfortable and unsafe, especially for students who have to see it every day.

Using harmful language, like the “n-word” and disrespectful comments

UNALEXEPTABLE

about private parts, is never acceptable in school. These words create a bad and disrespectful environment, sending the wrong message to students. Instead of focusing on learning and growing, students are exposed to harmful ideas about how to treat other.

Some people may say that vandalism is a way for students to express themselves, especially when they feel pressure from school, friends, or growing up. Writing on walls might feel like a way to show control or express frustration. But no matter why students do this, it doesn’t make it right. There are better and healthier ways for students to express themselves, like through art, music, or talking to a counselor. Writing on walls only spreads negativity.

This offensive act causes unnecessary problems for schools. Beyond the efforts of the facility staff, schools may need to spend money in order to repair any damages done by vandalism. This causes funds that should be spent on more important things, to be spent on constant repairing of damaged school property because of student’s immature attitudes. The school must take quick action. First, they need to find the students who did this and hold

Lies behind Smiles

2025 began with a headache among Grade 10 students as the number of phone and wallet thefts rose, raising concerns about the safety of many students at Bagong Silangan High School.

Victims shared that their wallets and phones were stolen when they left them unattended, left them in the court, bathroom, or parking lot, and, worst of all, were stolen inside their own classroom. This alarmed many students, as they believed there was a group of thieves in the same grade level, given the continuous record of theft day after day.

It made me sick to my stomach to think that thieves are just roaming around campus, faking their personalities in order to take advantage of those who appear naive and easy to manipulate. This issue does not sit right with me in terms of how unsettling it is because none of the thieves have been identified, despite the fact that they steal almost every day on campus.

The fact that a student, most likely a 16-yearold, may commit such a crime freely at school is extremely concerning. It is simply unacceptable that some students can be so inhumane at such a young age. It’s extremely upsetting that none of them truly apply any of the values lessons they’ve learned or, should I say, refuse to learn.

The children’s lack of empathy and morals in committing unrighteous crimes at such a young age, particularly within the school, should be

penalized regardless of their reasons for doing so. Address their lack of morals and never allow them to graduate with that kind of persona. Stealing is a crime. A crime is a crime regardless of the reason. They should be expelled and given to the DSWD for personal growth.

I believe that the school should have many CCTV cameras in every corner of the building to easily identify suspects and solve this problem in a much smoother process. If the school does not provide and monitor security, thieves will take advantage of the lack of security on campus. The school’s administrators should be concerned and act quickly before everything gets out of hand.

Incidents of theft may damage the school’s reputation, affecting enrollment, funding, and community support. This may also affect the quality of education and opportunities available. If no one will take action, this will never end.

This should serve as a lesson to many students to not bring their gadgets or leave their belongings unattended because even in what you consider your second home, even if you trust your own classmates and share laughter with them through your ups and downs, trust should never be given to random people, including your classmates. Never fall into their trap, because we don’t know them outside the school. Everyone can lie, and everyone can be fake. Even if someone seems friendly, you can’t always know their true motives. Protect yourself to avoid potential harm and trust no one.

them responsible. But just punishing them isn’t enough. The school must also encourage a culture of respect. They could teach students how to express themselves without hurting others, through programs like art workshops or conflict resolution classes.

These programs can help students handle their feelings in a better way. Self-discipline among students is equally important.

Parents and the local community also have an important role in solving this problem. It’s not just the school’s job. Teachers, parents, and community leaders must work together to guide students to behave better and take responsibility for their actions.

In conclusion, the vandalism at Bagong Silangan High School is a wake-up call for everyone. We can’t let graffiti and disrespect continue in our schools. While it’s important to understand that students might be expressing frustration, we need to make sure they learn positive and healthy ways to deal with their emotions. Now is the time to act. Let’s all work together to create a school where respect, kindness, and creativity are encouraged, and harmful behavior is stopped.

From my point of view as a student, I believe that yes, the prices of foods in our school’s canteen are indeed overpriced. And this caused an unsettling issue due to the fact that some students could not afford those products and unable to fill their stomach with the food they desire. If you ask me, my daily allowance can afford those foods but what about the other students who cannot? So why not decrease the prices of foods so that all of our students are able to buy them even to those whose allowance is not that high. The student’s parents’ work are also a factor that they get their school allowance exactly for their daily needs. And to the vendors, they should not make their prices unreasonable to the point that only few students are able to buy their product. The school’s higher authority should give their vendors a much higher salary so that they don’t make their products unaffordable.

No, because in a single classroom, there are at least 80 student which makes the environment hot, suffocated, and also noisy that can result stress and lack of focus for students due to the overpopulated classrooms. And by that, it will affect the overall academic performance of the learner making them lose track or catch up in the lesson taught by their teachers. And I think that they should provide a solution to this to ease the burden of many students in school. While the team teaching offers more engaging lesson and promotes teamwork or working together, let us not hide the fact that there are many reason why this should immediately rectified. An example to this is the respiratory problems of a specific student like asthma where they have trouble breathing.

Circus - like election UNALEXEPTABLE

To be accepted for a minimumwage job, one of the qualifications you need to meet is having a degree or experience before applying. Yet, how can convicted criminals, corrupt individuals, and even famous personalities—who lack critical thinking skills and are unsuitable to be politicians—run to become government servants?

Some of the famous personalities who filed for certificates of candidacy were Rosmarie Tan Pamulaklakin, Ion Perez, Luis Manzano, Marco Gumabao, Enzo Pineda, and Deo Jarito Balbuena, also known as Diwata Pares. I strongly believe that these personalities, with questionable backgrounds, will just give us nightmares, considering that none of them have extensive knowledge of leadership. This is about more than just intellectual aptitude and experience.

Personally, I find it devastating to see the Philippines losing its integrity and essence because of the low standards we have in electing candidates to serve in government. This will become a major issue in the near future if we continue to elect people who aren’t trustworthy enough to serve us. Their well-known names do not guarantee they will do an excellent job in government.

Being a government servant is no laughing matter. These people should never use their fame just to treat

this as child’s play. This is a serious matter, not a circus to be trifled with.

As a student from BSHS who will vote this year, I believe students like me should use this opportunity to put an end to the self-deceptive voting that many millennials engage in. This includes giving the benefit of the doubt and forming conclusions about candidates who are not qualified or have not made any meaningful contributions to their communities.

Generation Z, particularly first-time voters, should seize this opportunity to vote wisely and make a difference for a better future for the Philippines, avoiding false information that could mislead them with empty promises.

The Philippine government must raise the qualifications for politicians because we should never settle for less. Those running for office must have leadership experience or a law degree to be qualified. This will be critical for preventing our country’s downfall if we continue to support individuals who can’t lead and bring nothing to the table except their names and faces.

BSHS student voters should be wiser and openminded to the truth rather than believing in people who don’t deserve the benefit of the doubt. Politics is not a small matter and should be taken seriously. We must reject candidates who cannot promise a brighter future for us because not everyone who calls themselves a leader can truly lead.

Reasonable Complain

According to a survey that the previous grade 10 students conducted, Bagong Silangan High School’s overpriced meals were divided into two opinions, as some students fought for the side of the canteen vendors, while others bashed the pricey meals that the vendors sell.

Viewpoints were split into two sides as some pointed out the inflation, rental, and effort that the school canteen vendors need to consider, so the pricey foods in the canteen is still reasonable. While the other half shares their complaint towards the quality and price of the meals based on their awful experience.

Inflation is one of the biggest problems that the Philippines is currently facing, as the inflation rate continues to rise. With this reasoning, the students who fought for the canteen vendor sides use this as their argument given that the inflation, rental in school, efforts, and work hours that they need to consider are just right for them to add profit as a token for their hard work.

With these all-in-one problems, it is really reasonable on their part to add profit to the meals that they sell. According to some students, it’s very reasonable and the food just tastes normal.

On the other hand, others shared their viewpoints regarding overpriced meals that don’t even meet the expected quality of their meals and are not worthy of satisfying the consumer’s

hunger. According to some students, most of the foods are not edible, perfectly cooked, and pleasant to chew. With this argument, the students list all of the canteen flaws by telling their horrible experiences in the canteen.

“If they sell overpriced meals, at least make it worthy of its price and edible enough to satisfy everyone’s hunger,” an anonymous student argues.

In conclusion, both sides are reasonable. With their arguments, experiences, points, and sentiments, both were able to defend and explain their stand in a reasonable way.

In order to resolve the matter, students need to be honest about the meals they constantly complain about and offer suggestions for improvements that many other students anticipated. This can encourage the vendors to take suitable steps to enhance the quality of their meals that are appropriate and worth its price. If there are no improvements at all, this is where students should take action as they have the right to complain to the office as they deserve a worthy meal for its price.

Complaints after complaints will never solve or address the situation. Complaining without offering solutions or alternatively is unproductive. Rather, take good actions with good intentions and speak up when necessary. Complaints should also focus on solutions rather than giving more time to focus on the problem. There won’t be any improvements at all, or worse, no action to take if people just keep on whining and staying mute.

The Power Of Two PRECISION

In the current Bagong Silangan High School system, team teaching is implemented for the first 12 section for each grade level. Thus, making learning more productive and flexible.

As the saying “Two heads are better than one” depicts us the fact that team teaching actually provide us a much more quality education and enhance student engagement. By this, we can attain and promote teamwork, helping one another and uniting as one as a part of human life. Also, this implementation will lessen the burden for both teachers and students in the academic field. But behind all this positivity, there is a fundamental yet dark reason about why this was implemented in this new school year. It is based on the truth that our school kept on accepting enrollees to join and spend a whole year in our dear school, even when it is obviously overpopulated. Moreover, this caused many violent yet significant reactions amongst students. They were too stunned to hear the news that in a classroom, 80 students are given to occupy it. Which is for me, this is a huge redflag.

I, myself were also petrified when I was informed about that horrendous news.

Considering our country’s intense level of heat, they just simply decided to put 80 students on a single room without meticulously seeing the fact how this is going to affect a student’s health. The lack of space for the air to go

through are not enough to cover for more than 80 individuals in a classrom, are they going to let us suffocate to death by doing such inconsiderate action.

To make things clear and concise, team teaching benefits both teachers and students. As far as I’m concerned, this collaborative teaching style brought us to a more effective and fun type of teaching compared to the original one. But let us not conceal the fact that this style of teaching is implemented because of the 80-students-per-room problem. Which I can say that this totally makes up for it. In some cases, team teaching seems to be unequal in terms of distribution of responsibilities. Some teachers are alleged to be dependent to their partner in teaching, and doesn’t actually do their work, which completely disregards their job as a teacher. But in the end, they both get the same amount of salary and benefits which we all can say is wrong and unfair.

Ultimately, team teaching is an effective strategy implemented by our school and a fundamental way for students to achieve quality and professional education while still being hooked to the idea that they can enjoy this style of learning and can passionately improve academic performance with the help of your teachers working together as one, to teach you the basic lessons you must learn in your school life which will help you to succeed in the future.

Reasons Beyond Laziness Opposing The Tides

Many students struggle with the heavy load of schoolwork, and some even fail because they can’t turn in assignments on time. People often call these students lazy, but what they don’t know is that there are many problems these students might be facing alone, causing this behavior

This issue has been seen all over the Philippines, with several schools trying to find out why students fail. While many people ignore mental health as a big reason, it is often the main cause of academic struggles. The Philippine Development Plan shows that 10 % to 15 % of children aged 5 to 15 suffer from mental health problems. These issues are often caused by our education system, and here’s why.

Students are given a lot of stressful schoolwork by their teachers. Projects and homework keep piling up, and sometimes it’s just too much for students to handle. This stressful environment can cause burnout. Studies show that 40 % to 70 % of students experience burnout. This makes

a big role in students failing. A 2018 study by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies found that 24 % of students drop out of school. This is often because their families don’t have enough money to support their studies, so students have to leave school and find a job to help their family.

Students who fail aren’t doing so on purpose. Sometimes it’s because of financial problems they can’t solve or the result of too much stress. But this problem can be fixed by changing the way our education system works and offering more help to students.

Schools should give less homework, especially on Fridays, so students can use their weekends to rest, instead of doing schoolwork. The government can also help by providing free school supplies to students who can’t afford them.

Academic failure is a common problem many students face. It’s not just because they are lazy ; it’s because of mental health issues and financial struggles. By reducing schoolwork and helping students with financial problems, we can make schools more supportive. With these

Have you ever seen a vast ocean without its water forming into waves? Impossible right? For it is natural for an ocean to have its waves whether someone likes it or not. Educational crisis is one of the major issues a country would not like to deal with. For it forbids people from obtaining excellence in terms of academics. Like a mere fish following the flow of the waves but are unaware of where it is taking him.

Filipino learners showed no sign of improvement as they performed very poorly in the last two years of Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) for it is given that most Filipinos lack academic excellence compared to the other Asian countries considering the poor education system our country has in place.

PISA is a worldwide study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development which is intended to evaluate educational systems by measuring 15-year-old school pupils’ scholastic performance in the field of mathematics, science, and reading. And by failing this, we are just making our country swallowed by its own waves with no power to overcome or resist it.

The Philippines’ educational status is far from stable, let us face the fact that we are in rock-bottom in the education rankings all across the world. Compared to other countries, we are simply left behind and would take a lot of work to combat the tides that was making us stumble in our knees.

In addition, with the government implementing the Matatag Curriculum, another wave may have been generated. This curriculum

slowly but surely makes its students vulnerable and prone to different illnesses because of the non-stop studying without feeling any peace in our minds. This curriculum will never change our country’s educational status if they are treating its students like robots. This constant academic pressure will only lead to our students’ downfall and also our country’s.

Ultimately, we should not expect an immediate change in our education ranking, if the government is only giving a small amount of funds for education, poor management of schools, and proposing a curriculum which only brings suffering and a bigger burden for students. With all these factors going on, it is impossible for me to believe in making our vast ocean still and peaceful when the people seated in power are the ones disrupting it and making much larger waves that people need to cope with.

But that doesn’t mean that we should give up on our lives. Only dead fish go with the flow, or the ones that chose to go with it. As a strong and resilient fish, we need to endure every wave until it is no longer threatening us to be weak and defeated. As the democratic country as we are, us people should unite to bring justice on where the funds for education is used for, because it isn’t the kind of action we condone for.

Let us take a step back even with the mightiest of waves are ready to put us down. But even if it did, there is always a time to stand up and seek for change. To achieve that kind of change, we need to also change our leaders that are secretly betraying its people by creating new waves to endure. And by that, we can obtain the development not only for education but also in all aspects of our beloved country.

Setting standards is crucial for education, but placing extreme expectations can harm students’ mental health. Constantly chasing unattainable goals induces stress, anxiety, and feelings of inadequacy. Since students are not perfect, demanding perfection in every task is unreasonable and unhealthy. This pressure leads to procrastination, avoidance, and even severe mental health issues like burnout and depression. Instead of focusing on fear and pressure, there should be a rounded approach that promotes growth, feedback, and a healthy environment.

Pressure like a tick..tick..tick..till

Being a student isn’t hard they said, it will be easy they said, but why does it feel as if the world is sinking into chaos while you, with only a grip on the tip of your fingers, are slowly consumed by the bottomless pit of pressure?

Many might consider this as an overreaction but with all the school work piled up, drowning in assignments while also being consumed by the thought of having a test for tomorrow in which you aren’t prepared. How will I do it? How will I be able to pass every requirement?

6 years elementary, 4 years of High school, 2 years of senior high school, and lastly 4 years of college, bit by bit, it doesn’t seem difficult since you only progress year by year till you finally graduate, start a life and work. Although it is easy to learn, it’s not so easy being a student.

In today’s fast-paced, hyperconnected world, high school students find themselves under a level of pressure that is unprecedented. From academic expectations to social dynamics, the weight of these

pressures can feel overwhelming, leading many to grapple with anxiety, stress, and a sense of isolation.

For many high school students, the quest for academic excellence is a driving force. The constant race to build impressive academic validation can lead to burnout, as many students prioritize grades over their mental well-being. Consequences of this pressure are evident in the rising rates of mental health issues among high school students. Anxiety, depression, and stress-related disorders are becoming increasingly common.

Schools are beginning to recognize the importance of mental health support, with some implementing programs and resources aimed at fostering a healthier environment. However, there is still a long way to go in addressing the stigma and ensuring students have access to the necessary support systems.

When will the education system finally wake up and stop the nightmares of bringing forth pressure, anxiety, and stress

rather than the real value of learning itself. Pressure is like a time bomb in which the constant need for Academic Validation among students is slowly consuming them, instead of the shining bright like the stars, it leads to burnout.

Every Student’s Ideal Meal PASTIL :

“To keep your mind still, eat Pastil”

Winter Daive Añasco, VG Cambridge Domingo

Savory, mouth-watering. and delectable cuisine found outside school premises in which once you get a scent of it, your mind would start to disregard irrelevant thoughts and would rather think of buying this treat as a way of rewarding yourself before work starts to get serious.

A meal in which each journalism students buys everytime to satisfy their appetite and a way to combat tiring work with a full stomach. This styrofoam-packed meal contains rice fit for one person and shredded chicken paired or mixed with a sauce you’ll long for. It is either made by chili sauce or just plain sauce.

It is affordable and a budget-like version of chicken adobo that usually costs a lot. But due to its shredded pieces, it doesn’t cost much and is student-friendly.

As a journalism student, pastil is something I look forward to during training weeks. To walk along the sidewalks under the scorching sun or rain won’t even bother me just to have a taste.

During harsh training sessions, I usually tend to find something to eat but with only 50php on my hand. With this, I start to remember chicken Pastil which is only worth 20php and is already enough for my stomach just so I could have something to eat for a whole busy afternoon in preparation for the contest.

Journalism students sometimes label pastil as some sort of energy booster, one of my fellow journalism folks here in BSHS even remaked that pastil helped them a lot during the grueling hours we would spend

pulling ourselves together and create our pieces to prepare for our future presscon battles.

As a student who budgets money properly, pastil is a meal worth buying. Not only because it’s affordable but also because it’s delicious and can last me 3 hours of work without getting starved.

Yet not only English Journalism students are always buying chicken pastil since Filipino

Journalism students are also into eating pastil due to the fact that it is close from school and is helpful for students who has to get through the day without getting hungry.

An ideal meal that aids hunger and helps journalism students to do their work properly is something each student looks forward to. One taste and a spoonful would make you feel the feeling of comfort without thinking of how expensive it is or that t tastes awful because neither of those fits it’s description.

Even student-athletes here eat up pastil to satisfy and energize them in their hardships when training, pastil is literally out here saving massive numbers of not just studentathletes but also regurlar students, a real life superhero for some.

Therefore, add it to your list of favorite meals because I know it is something you’ll add to your list once you try it.

Make sure to savor each and every bite to ensure a good-tasting and longlasting satisfied cravings.

And remember, when in doubt, eat pastil in and out. It is there save you, encourage, and guide you to point you want to achieve. There for a long run, unlike your last relationship, I suppose.

Colorful, bright, and radiant. A place just around the corner where in front of it is where the newest talk of the town is being held.

A place that fills up every village’s corner, to actually making it whole and complete is a little ar connected to a certain house which shows each Filipinos’

When walking along the roads in a village in our country, you’ll see various establishments and infrastructures. One particular place stands out due to its colorful and vivid products within its small, well-built walls. Despite its tiny size, it’s surprising to see how many items can fit inside.

In the Philippines, it’s common to find mini-sized grocery stores in every corner of a barang neighborhood . These establishments, known as ‘tindahans,’ are a significant part of our country culture, providing easy access to products that

pride and hard work.

To walk within its roads, a tindahan is a place you can go. With how it’s found in every comuunity, it is a place you can absolutely remember. Whether it be big or small, it’s a place, we, Filipinos, own. And in every corner, it fills a community and fulfills a tradition

might otherwise be miles away.

As a citizen and resident of a specific barangay, I often rely on tindahans when I need items th aren’t available in larger department or grocery stores located far away. Additionally, as Filipinos, we need ‘sari-sari stores’ to purchase urgentlyneeded items and essentials that should also be used immediately.

A tindahan or sari-sari store is an

alternative to a traditional grocery store, offering a wide range of essential products. It’s deeply ingrained in Filipino culture and has been utilized for many decades, especially by those who may not have easy access to larger grocery stores.

Though tindahans may not look that large in size, it has a big effect on Filipinos as to how it can be less hassling and also in a way that it can help Filipinos have an alternate version of stores that they

can’t usually afford but is connected to a house its owner lives in

It shows how versatile Filipinos are and on how creative we can be when it comes to certain subjects about making life easier. And as it completes its owner’s status in economy, it also completes a tahanan in a way that it fills each resident with our culture.

Youth of truth

When we are younger, we always wish to grow older. Smiles from our mother saying we should think before a wish, because many could happen in a swish. Our youth is always the prime of our lives. It was sweeter than any fruit, unaware of the truth, we can go in spree, living and thriving, in a world where we can do anything.

As we grow, we start to see the world in a different light. We learn to face challenges, to take responsibility, and to make our own decisions. Our youth is a time of discovery, a time to explore and learn. We make mistakes, we fail, we fall, but we always get up, and never stop.

Or an insecurity derived from being inferior?

“Pogi ko”, “Sorry, pogi lang”, and many quotes from boy best friends and boy classmates that surely you have encountered once in your friend group or your high school days, when boys from the back of the class that jammed their days aways, tolerated because of a misogynistic society. “It’s the nature of being a man, let them

be.”.

But as we journey through life, we start to realize that youth passes by. It slips away between our fingers, lost forever in the passage of time. We wish we could turn back, but we cannot control the clock. it’s always ticking, unaware of

what the future may bring. So

let us cherish our youth, while it is still ours to hold, because time is gold. Let us make the most of every moment, every experience, and every opportunity. While we are young wild and free.

May our decisions be bright, so we can embrace our life’s journey with wonder

and

delight. As this memories of joy run deep, it will always be in our heart keep.

And when this moment flashes at us in the future, we can look back to our laugh so real and pure. Someday the nostalgic feeling that the past will bring, can be the best feeling and the best thing.

Narcissistic claim or Overconfidence?

To tease superficial girls as a form of showing their love even if she gets annoyed or irritated. Many oldies would blurt that out. However, a huge majority of teenage girls and those grown up denied this and declared an advocacy towards a halt of harassment. Users from all round social media platforms gathered up to find this information relatable; to sharing awful experiences, their disturbed

space. Causing many raging men to come forward to respond this claim saying “girls are far too sensitive for this case to be that big of a deal.”. as for the other half, agreeing with the women are part of the LGBTIQQ+ This simple act is becoming a hot topic for controversies in stereotypical gender inequality. Summing up laws and separations of comfort rooms meant for all to protect the safety of women and children under the hands of men.

To these days, many women

continue to speak out for the victims of men’s shallow declaration of their abusive ‘love’ for as an equal community cannot be precisely established when intersectd with misogynism.

“Who knows? perhaps love can be defined in ways one hopes solve their nine years old’s dream in their beauty sleeps awaiting for their green flags in voluntary acts of affection.”

Adventure Time of Break Time

From these past years, every student probably knows how chaotic yet fun a day of class is inside Bagong Silangan High School. Whether a creative class presentation is being conducted, a dramatic roleplay presentation about a short story in Filipino performed, and many more to mention. But, even with the fun happening within each lecture, nothing can ever beat how chaotic and enthusiastic the adventure you will experience during the break time.

“Okay, goodbye class,” your teacher says, packing their stuff on the table where their projector lies. You know what was up, and you hurriedly stood up and responded, “Goodbye, teacher! Thank you for teaching us today, Mabuhay! ”The silent classroom has turned into a chamber where each friend circle meets up and discusses what to do as it is now break time. You heard a familiar voice call you out, “Tara, canteen tayo!” It is your friend calling you to hurry up because the break time only lasts for about 20 minutes, and if you do not distribute that 20 minutes properly, then you will miss out on a lot of things back in class.

Your adventure towards the canteen starts here! Your quest? Survive the crowded hallway. When you step out of the classroom, the hallway is crowded as usual. By the time a teacher leaves, it is more cluttered than your classroom. There are many conversations around you, but you can barely understand even a single one due to the

while bringing their learning materials. The whole journey just inside the cluttered hallway would take you around two minutes or four minutes if you walked many of these hallway activities.

After the tiring encounters inside the hallway, you have now reached the canteen. New quest, maneuver through the canteen. You would probably say that the hallway adventure was already tiring and chaotic; well, true, but the canteen is on a whole new level. The canteen serves consumables, while each stall resembles the letter “U” by how they are all positioned, each one of these stalls may have a spectrum of smell, ranging from the savory smell of the hot-served Mami, fresh smell of the newly heated peanut butter bunwich, and the sweet nature smell of the cold cup of banana con yelo. Just explore what you can see inside the canteen, and pick something that would tickle your pickle.

The canteen is far louder and more cramped than the classroom or hallway due to the big rush of hungry students on their way to absolutely drain all of the canteen products. It is a little hot inside the canteen, but each adventure always has its own challenge to achieve something, and the challenge here is the cramped space and heat, the prize being the food being sold. After all of that, by some miracle, you have eventually bought the food you wanted. The harsh environment of the canteen alone would take around eight minutes, depending on the rush. The journey is not yet over, however, as there is one final quest for you to pass through.

Now, the final quest, back to the classroom! Pro tip: Use the same path you went through to save time. The state where you left the hallway would change a bit. Carefully walk through the tight spaces, bump into some of your friends, and finally reach back to your classroom.

Thou shall not steal the Tape!

In classrooms everywhere, there is one item that students borrow as if it were an item, if not used someone may perish: the famous correction tape. Forget ball-pens, erasers, or even paper— correction tape has become the unsung hero of classroom supplies, and the chaos surrounding it is a war waiting to happen.

There’s always that one person who never has correction tape. Maybe they once bought one but lost it in the depths of their backpack within hours of never ending lessons. Bur every class, they turn to the student next, behind, in front or even at the farthest row just to ask them and whisper, “Hey, can I borrow your correction tape?” as if it’s their birthright. This student seems to believe correction tape is a communal resource, like free Wi-Fi. No one knows what happened to their own correction tape – if they ever had any at all. Rumor has it, they might have been born without it.

Then there’s the student who has multiple correction tapes, each for a different situation. They own correction tape in various colors, sizes,

Pen,

amount of collective noise and the overlapping laughter each conversation makes. You might see a friend or two while you waddle through the crowded hallway, and you might even bump into a teacher heading to their respective subject department

The adventure of break time ends here; you may now sit and enjoy the food you bought - you earned it! Bring a friend to burn the remaining few minutes you have before the next subject arrives. Maybe tomorrow’s break time could bring you more interesting adventures. But, remember to always have fun and appreciate every adventure in the future. Just like in the old saying, things may be happening around you, but always remember how to enjoy them no matter how important and size they may be. See you around in your next adventure!

and brands, and even the design for the sake of all things good. Need to cover up one line? They have a thin tape for precision. Making a big correction They’ve got the industrialsize roll for that. The Correction Tape Connoisseur treats their collection like a prized art exhibit and loans it out only reluctantly, watching closely as the borrower applies it, hoping they don’t press too hard. God forbid they hear the dreaded snap – it could ruin the entire friendship, forgotten, reduced the relationship to zero.

Some students have mastered the art of turning correction tape into a side hustle. They always have an extra, but there’s a catch – if you want to borrow it, you’ll have to pay the price. Some take snacks in exchange, while others demand a small, tiny, little help on homework or maybe an answer or two on a future quiz. If you find yourself borrowing from the Hustler too often, be prepared to pay up their prices only go up as test season rolls around. Prepare something in exchange for them to be able to trust you with their valuable correction tape.

pen, where did you go?

Writing using a variety of ball pen colors is fun indeed. With the lines and satisfying sound it creates in each stroke, as well as the vibrant colors it leaves behind, it sure is a fun

thing to do

in the middle of a cloudy lecture. But, what is not so fun to experience after is the sudden and somewhat unexplained disappearance of the pens you probably had just put down.

You were just sitting down, and it was gone. Frustration would grow as you looked in every possible angle, degree, or even dimension, and yet with no avail. Frustration would turn into anger as you remembered you had just bought it today, making the cloudy lecture in front of you even more confusing.

With every ticking sound of your watch, you might have already checked your pockets more than ten times just to remind yourself that you had indeed lost your pen. “O’ pen, pen, where could you have possibly gone?” It would probably be a phrase that plays on repeat inside your thoughts. By this time, you

would probably turn into Dr. Strange checking the past, future, and every possible outcome of an event just to pinpoint where exactly it went.Have you dropped it while you were paying attention to the lecture? No? Okay, then did you leave it on a page of your notebook No? You checked it a million times already? Well, did you at least check under your chair? That must be it then? Check it under, but yet met a huge disappointment as it was not under your chair.

You had spent way too much time just looking for your pen that you reached the end of the lecture without taking notes nor even digesting any knowledge spat on front of you. With no proper answer, it might be that someone took it without you noticing. That is probably it, just ask in front of if someone has taken your pen.

As you pack up the things scattered on your desk and slowly stand up, you hear something drop. It was your pen, you had just realized that you left it between your legs the entire time, now you would probably make a silly face and move on. Even with you moving on, a mystery would remain, how did the pen even get there without you noticing? Or, how did you not even manage to find it in the first place, it was just hiding in plain sight. Well then, pen, pen, where didyou go? Do not ask me, I do not know.

KontraBulate: The Hero of Every GUT!

Our world is inherently filled with bacteria and parasites, and despite our diligent cleaning efforts, these microorganisms will always be present both outside and inside our bodies. Despite this, humans, always looking for solutions, continue to insist on finding ways to combat those who are destroying our health. In this article, we will take a look at how these wriggly parasites impact our lives and share some great tips on how we can keep them at bay!

Children are happily playing, running, and exploring their surroundings. Their nails and hands become dirty as they engage in every adventure, with dirt integrating with their skin. They are inherently happy and full of energy, and it does not matter if their surroundings are tidy or messy they are always eager to jump in and have fun with their friends.

On top of this, they are frequently oblivious to the hidden risks lying in these unsanitary environments, which can enter their bodies and make them ill. Behind the dirt lurk wriggling parasites known as worms, which can enter the body if hygiene is neglected. Once inside, they can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, nausea, and an upset stomach.

Worms enter the body through inadequate hand hygiene, walking barefoot, eating contaminated food, drinking water that is contaminated, using dirty utensils, and other unsanitary practices. Once inside, the eggs hatch into larvae, which eventually grow into worms. These adult worms then lay eggs, which are expelled in the feces, so repeating the cycle.

But fear not, the hero arrives to end the suffering of every gut!

The KontraBulate program, an initiative from the DOH and DepEd Advisory, aims to target and eliminate the parasites within every belly.

On November 19, 2024, the program was successfully carried out at Bagong Silangan High School. This deworming effort is designed to rid the body of harmful parasites and restore health.

Deworming is the process of administering medication to eliminate parasitic worms, or helminths, in humans and animals. This helps protect children from these wriggling health destroyers, allowing them to continue their journey without the burden of parasites. Beyond

OF GREEN - Increase of Urban Farming is see in Quezon City in hopes of sustainable food supply around the city.

JOY Of Urban Farming is one of Mayor Joy Belmonte’s main programs that is intended to provide food sources for vulnerable communities. It aims to provide affordable and nutritious food to residents while also creating green spaces in the heart of urban environments.

The city’s urban farming initiative began with a 750-square-meter space at Quezon Memorial Circle, and by 2024, 142 of the city’s barangays now have urban farms. According to a January

Ddeworming, important reminders emphasize that practicing better hygiene habits will further strengthen our defense against these harmful parasites.

Lucky are the BSHS students because we received pills on

kontra-bulate with this, we can continue our journey. Have fun, but remember to take care of your gut. They all learned that the best way to prevent these parasites is by practicing good hygiene. Let us all take the pill, and keep the worms still!

Joy’s Urban Farming intensifies in QC

To ensure a more sustainable food supply and encourage communities to use various planting methods and to provide vegetable seeds for backyard gardening, QC Mayor Joy Belmonte launched the “Joy of Urban Farming” project in Quezon City in 2010 with Ms. Tina Perez, the head of the project as it continues until today.

2024 update from the local government, the number of urban farms in Quezon City has increased from 754 in the first half of the year to 1,026.

This will provide the city with a sustainable food supply through various ways of community planting. Furthermore, this project reached Bagong Silangan High School and had an impact on improving the surrounding area.

Mayor Belmonte said that the program created livelihood options for over 25,000 urban farmers. “This is a most welcome development, especially

in terms of addressing food security in our communities,” stated Mayor Joy Belmonte.

Shortly, many locals are hoping for the initiative to thrive on greater success based on what the Mayor mentioned, as it is believed that the city would also push for “food surplus” activities “where excess food to be thrown away will be redirected to feed the hungry and vulnerable.”

Mayor Joy Belmonte intends to expand the city’s food security initiative by promoting other programs such as beekeeping, mushroom production, aquaculture, hydroponics, and smart farming, as well as implementing more

DENR conducts “Dalaw-Turo” seminar at BSHS

epartment of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducted a seminar in Bagong Silangan High School (BSHS) dubbed as Dalaw-Turo last November 21, 2024, on Thursday.

The seminar chose selected students to attend the seminar. While 5 Yes-O club officers, 10 Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG) members, and 5 Science Club Officers facilitated the event.

As the orientation continues, the Yes-O club adviser, Ms. Mary Grace D. Falcutila, talked about the school cleanliness and its causes and effects followed by the seminar proper.

Mark Quizon discussed what solid waste is Solid waste is the trash or waste that may not be soluble that can be found in different households, by members of communities, factories, or wastewater treatment plants at air pollution control

facilities.

The seminar discussed the following topics: What is RA 9003? It is the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000; the Materials Recovery Facilities (MRF) that are commonly found in local government units (LGUs) or barangays. The classification of waste: Compostables are organic waste that can be broken into compost. Recyclables are waste that can be reprocessed into new products.

QAI: Break Of the Traditional way of learning

The surge of advancement on technology has grown quite a lot over the past few years, to the point that a new, ground-breaking way to utilize techonology was invited, the birth to the modern helping hand in learning: Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence is a field of science that aims to build a machine that can reason, think, and respond just like humans. It is a modern technology that contains millions of pieces of data that surpass the limited thinking capacity of a human.

This has resulted in thousands of users supporting the use of it as an alternative form of learning.AI refers to computer systems that are incapable of performing complex tasks that historically only a human could do, such as reasoning, making decisions, or solving problems.

According to Coursera, an American Global Open Online Course, AI is an umbrella term that encompasses a wide variety of technologies, including machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing (NLP) AI machines learn from experience and adjust to new inputs to perform human-like responses. There are various types of AI, including Digital Assistants, Search Engines, Social Media, Online Shopping, Robots, Text Editing, Autocorrect, and last but not least, Fraud Prevention.

In addition, Social Networking sites are its real-time example for the reason that they have a massive amount of help in performing the right predictions in conversations, tweets, and blogs.

On the other hand, even if it has a lot of benefits, it still has its disadvantages:

Data Privacy, Job Displacements, Cybersecurity Risks, lack of creativity, and its absence of integrity.

Also, after all of its attempts at making precise decisions, it is still undeniable that it still has a lot of flaws because its responses are a mix of fact and fiction, which raised concerns regarding the credibility of the said technology.

However, it is still undeniable that AI eliminates human error and risk. People often make mistakes occasionally, especially in repetitive tasks. So with the help of the AI tool, it will improve the consistency of providing much more credible and precise information.

Furthermore, humans are likely to disagree and allow their biases to influence their decisions, making it a biased decision. And that’s where AI comes in picture, it is programmed to be able to make decisions without the influence of bias.

There are even records of BSHS students using AI as a means of solution to their assignments, projects, and questions.

After presenting all the facts. It is still recommended to use and hone your intelligence as it is essential in exercising your brain for it to function well at any cause, and by doing so, your work would not be considered plagiarized.

Waste Wise Warriors Take Action

uezon City Government (QCG), in partnership with its Department of Dental Health Division, brought its “Ngiti Mo, Sagot Ko” Dental Caravan to Bagong Silangan High School (BSHS) on November 8, providing free oral healthcare services to students

As early as 7:45 a.m., students began lining up and registering at the BSHS covered court for dental examinations conducted by professionals such as Dr. Ferdinand J. Eñeco.

After registration, the students who were examined for cleaning lined up at the school’s parking lot to wait for their turn at the dental bus.

Students received free dental procedures, including tooth extraction and tooth restoration.

Cleaning and filling procedures were performed inside the dental bus, where two patients can be operated on at the same time, while tooth extractions were conducted at the school clinic.

Students who opted for tooth extraction and restoration are automatically excused and can go home right after the treatment to avoid straining themselves

According to the Philippine Dental Association (PDA), seven out of ten Filipinos, or 72% of the population, suffer from tooth decay or dental caries.

Tooth decay is one of the most common oral diseases in the Philippines, primarily caused by high sugar intake, poor dental hygiene, and the lack of regular dental checkups.

Tooth decay occurs when bacteria caused by sugar mixes with acid in the mouth, leading to damage in the parts of the teeth and developing into cavities.

Dental problems are common for children aged five to twelve years old, it impacts school

BSHS’ SSLG Officers and Commitee members implemented the roomto-room campaign for the Waste Wise Warriors protocol on November 19 to November 22, 2024 at Bagong Silangan Highschool.

The main goal of the Waste Wise Warriors is to engage with the students and teach them the proper waste disposal, the 3R’s ( Reduce, Reuse, Recycle ) as multiple ways and the solutions to maintain and improve the campus’ clean and neat environment.

“For this project, i hope that the students will takes this seriously and implement our teachings, as the cleanliness of the school is very important,” said SSLG’s President, Hannah Encienzo.

The Waste Wise Warriors follow the ‘WASTE’ protocol to

attendance and also workplace productivity.

Moreover, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Oral Health Status Report in 2022 revealed that an estimated 3.5 billion people worldwide are affected by oral diseases.

Untreated oral diseases can lead to difficulties in eating, sleeping, speaking, and learning, particularly among children and adolescents, ultimately impacting productivity, school performance, and overall well-being.

The lack of knowledge of many Filipinos in dental care contributes to the rising cases of oral health care problems. As a result, the Department of Health (DOH) considered this problem as a silent epidemic.

Additionally, some Filipinos who are living in isolated and disadvantaged areas don’t have access to dental health facilities.

The free dental caravan provides information and solutions to prevent the widespread of this dental issue.

Medicines were also provided for students who had their teeth extracted.

Together, the program promoted the overall well-being of the students, making an impact and transforming smiles, especially for those students who lack access to adequate dental care.

Maintaining a balanced diet, visiting the dentist regularly, living a healthy lifestyle, and practicing good oral hygiene are essential for achieving optimal oral health.

The “Ngiti Mo, Sagot Ko” Dental Caravan program seeks to promote dental healthcare for BSHS students and address the deteriorating state of oral healthcare in the country.

Through the QCG and the support of various officials, Silanganians now enjoy healthier smiles laying the foundation for brighter futures for every student.

Whats your SCI?

- What are your thoughts about the students that takes advantage of Artificial Intelligence or AI like Chatgpt for Academic works?

The overuse of AI by students for assignments and other academic works is very alarming. Everyday i can see numerous students that rely on Artificial Intelligence tools like Cici, ChatGPT, and Meta AI, leading them to forget independent learning and critical thinking. Instead of applying their own knowledge, they simply input questions and accept the AI generated answers without learning any information. Instead of getting help from AI, they simply worsen their knowledge by choosing to rely in AI.

As a student leader, it saddens me that AI dependent students continue to grow. While AI tools boost efficiency and accessibility, overreliance undermines critical thinking, creativity and originality. To strike a balance, we should use AI as a tool , not crutch, verify generated information, and prioritize human collaboration and critical thinking exercises to foster wellrounded skills for the betterment of students.

SexEd for Change: A Step Towards Safer Youth

he Department of Education (DepEd) is pushing to introduce Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in schools. This move comes as a response to the high rates of teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and gender-based violence. However, some groups, especially religious and family rights organizations, are against the program, claiming it may teach inappropriate content to

CSE aims to provide students with important knowledge about sexual and reproductive health, consent, relationships, and gender. This is important because, according to data, over 140,000 adolescent mothers were reported in 2023, and many of them were under 15 years old. This shows that there is an urgent need for better sex education to help reduce teenage pregnancies and improve sexual health. CSE is supported by global organizations like UNESCO, UNICEF, and UNFPA. The goal is to help young people make responsible and informed decisions about their health. It’s designed to be age-appropriate and culturally sensitive, meaning it should respect Filipino values while also

A provision in the adolescent pregnancy prevention bill allowing sexually active minors to access reproductive health services without parental consent has sparked disagreement. Some believe this undermines parents’ role in guiding their children, but supporters argue that it’s necessary to protect young people from unplanned pregnancies and unsafe sexual behaviors

The purpose of sex education is to keep young people safe and healthy. Studies show that when children and teenagers receive comprehensive sex education, they are less likely to experience unwanted pregnancies or STIs. They also have a better understanding of consent and relationships.

The introduction of Comprehensive Sexuality Education is an important step in addressing issues like teenage pregnancy and STIs in the Philippines. While it’s important to respect cultural and family values, it’s also necessary to provide young people with the tools they need to make safe and responsible decisions.

BSHS students expressed openness to sexual education, acknowledging its benefits in empowering young people to make informed decisions, identify potential abuse, and understand the importance of consent.

This education can help lower the number of teenage pregnancies, which is a big problem in our country The ongoing discussions about this topic should focus on ensuring that education remains ageappropriate, scientifically accurate, and culturally sensitive.

Alexis Gulla, together with Francis Magdoza, both from 10-Agoncillo, proudly represented Bagong Silangan High School (BSHS) in the Dance Sport District athletic meet last Sunday, October 13, at Commonwealth High School (CWHS).

The fast-paced dancing they displayed threaded the needle as they got past the elimination round, and remained as one of the two schools to compete for the final title together with CWHS.

They eventually fell in the hands of CWHS in a

close battle, leaving the judges troubled on who to pick, ending their run as the 2nd placers, only behind the host school.

As beginners with only two weeks of preparation before the competition, Gulla and Magdoza went into battle with only one another’s back being their pillar of confidence. They outstandingly perfected the dances, ChaChaCha, Jive, and Rumba in a short time all thanks to their Coach, Sir Ryan Java. One of the factors that played a role in their

success was Gulla’s Father, Wilde Bacera Gulla, a professional dance instructor, and Grandmother Carol Bacera Alico, a professional dancer and a former Philippine Olympics representative who won multiple international awards.

Outstanding camaraderie and friendship was displayed when their fellow classmates, students from 10-Agoncillo, went to CWHS just to give them their support and to back both Gulla and Magdoza in their battle.

Magdoza expressed his heartful gratitude to everyone that supporten him and Gulla in their battle,

including all of their trainers, friends, family and most importantly, their section, Grade 10-Agoncillo. With their first-time success, BSHS’s Dance Sport team has a bright future and can only go up from here on out.

“We may have not won this year, but this will be my stepping stone to push and work even harder, so I’ll come back stronger than ever. My journey in dancesports doesn’t end with our first loss. Rather, this is just the beginning of my bridge to reaching for the gold medal. That journey starts today, as I will work tirelessly to win the crown,” Gulla’s pledge about her career

SK OLYMPICS Cycling’s Thrilling Finish BOBO tops District Athletic Meet

Bagong Silangan’s first cycling tournament, part of the ‘SK Olympics,’ concluded on Saturday, June 29, with the competition producing four successful champions in various categories with the event, one of the most awaited in the SK Olympics, kicked off at 7 am, drawing cycling enthusiasts from across the barangay.

One of, if not the most anticipated event of the “SK OLYMPICS” came rolling at 7 a.m., filled with many different cyclists around the barangay.

Filled with tension in the air, the cyclists participated in the elderly’s zumba routine to ease up their minds and bodies, preparing them for the race that was about to begin. Everyone gathered in the starting line to start the opening prayer.

To familiarize every rider with the track, each category rode out in groups to seek out any dangerous and irregular things in the route that may affect the race and the cyclist’s safety.

With all that said and done, the first category, Junior Rb or Road

Bike, lined up on the starting line. When the whistle blew, the riders flew, with the front line breaking away from the peloton to gain momentum.

The Junior RB (Road Bike) race blasted off the competition with intense aura from the riders. the contestants battled slippery turns that caused multiple crashes, but Bryan Obligado (#37) gritted to claim victory. In the Junior MTB category, Cedric Navarro ran through his competitors to take the top spot.

The Senior RB category showcased their mentality, with Joseph Quintos (#49) dominating the front from start to finish. lastly, the Senior MTB race ended the tournament on a high note, as Michael Jimenez powered ahead in the final stretch to secure the win.

With SK Chairperson Pia Odo, SK cycling head, SK Kagawad Jamilla Briñas, other Sk staff, and volunteers, the Bagong Silangan Cycling Tournament came to a successful close.

The competition ended in triumph as Barangay Bagong Silangan’s Sanggunian Kabataan concludes their very first, and most certainlynot the last SK Olympics Cycling tournament

In the midst of pressure and tension, Bagong Silangan High School’s (BSHS) basketball team, Best of Basketball Organization (BOBO) proved its worth in the annual district athletic meet, ending their journey at the semi-finals on October 6 at Batasan Hills National High School (BHNHS)

BOBO’s journey to the Athletic Meet was one of a kind, with Coach Darwin Dela Torre leading their practices and scrimmages, the players quickly enhanced their skills and abilities in the short time they were given before the Athletic Meet.

The players showed heart and fire through the competition, facing big names like Justice Cecilia Munoz Palma High School (JCMPHS) and BHNHS.

They faced their enemies in unfamiliar territory with their heads high, winning against JCMPHS on October 6, losing one against BHNHS and JCMPHS eventually taking their revenge at the semi-finals and kicking BOBO out of the competition on October 12.

Even after their battle ended earlier than they expected, BOBO still made a name for themselves in the athletic meet by securing their spot as the 3rd best team and school in the District 2 athletic meet.

After finishing in the top 16 of the division level last year, BOBO only went as far as 3rd in the district meet this year.

Although there was progress, BOBO still has room for improvement, as the teams they defeated last year were now headed to the division meet this year.

Fans expressed their slightly disappointed opinions as they expected BOBO to reach the division level like last year as this was Nicanor Bautista and the other seniors last year competing.

Team captain Bautista maintained an optimistic outlook, acknowledging that they lost today, but promised that the team would bounce back stronger than ever. He also said some parting words to the athletes that will become a part of BOBO next year.

“Para sa mga sasali next year dapat hindi lang ang basketball skill ang ma improve sainyo but also ang performance nyo sa acad kase ang aim talaga ng basketball team ng bshs ay maging student-athlete and not athlete-student” he said, highlighting the importance of balancing your academic and athletic life.

Captain Bautista also said to the next batch not to worry, as he would still help the team as an Alumnus even after graduating and moving up to senior high school.

The stage is set for BOBO, Captain Bautista said that they can only go up from here on out, with BOBO acquiring plenty of talented players as they will nurture them into heavy-hitting players for next year’s competition.

Masilang’s long and painful training were showcased in the competition as he leapt higher than he was expected too, his competitors were shocked as they were no where near Masilang’s jumping ability, letting the

other jumpers know that there are levels between them and Masilang.

Though tiring, for Masilang, its not an excuse to not bring food to the table, as he triumphed successfully in the district meet, showcasing that the amount of blood and sweat he gathered throught hi’s training has finally to paid off.

and explosive Kenneth quickly became a force to be reckon with.

Himself knew his bright future was soon as he performed well in highschool, earning gold places in Grade 9 and 10, Showing how determained he truly is in jumping.

Enviromental Disaster

As the Batang pinoy 2024 comes to an end, Bagong Silangan Chess representative Jayrald Antiporta speaks out about the challenges he faced at the venue during the competition on November 23-28.

The Batang Pinoy 2024 was held at the Palawan State University Performing Arts Center, Puerto Princesa Palawan.

With hundreds, even thousands of competitors in the National level, people

would think that the venue will be worthy for the National standards right? well, not quite.

The venue was not like what the players expected especially for The Batang Pinoy 2024. Antiporta encountered significant challenges during the competition. The blazing heat inside the venue and a one-hour blackout disrupted his focus, ultimately affecting his performance and leading to crucial losses.

NATHING BUT THE TRUTH

“Okay naman yung venue kung National Level naman. Kaso parang hindi lang prepared yung host sa mga technicalities tulad nung nag black out mahigit 1-hour pa nabalik yung kuryente eh ang init dun sa loob habang nag lalaro yung players, Pero okay pa rin naman yun lang yung naging technicalities nila,”

The chess prodigy expressed after being asked if the venue was fit for national standard.

even if it’s quite disappointing, it’s not

shocking for situations like these to occur in a competition, but people should take counter measures for unprecedented variables like black outs from happening.

The people incharge of handling the technical sides of competitions should be careful and wary of player conditions at the venue, especially if it’s in the National level like the Batang Pinoy 2024, where the best of the best competes for the title of champion.

Fueled by more than just talent

As the cheers echoed through the stadium, our school’s athletes made their mark at the District II athletic meet, fueled by more than just their talent; they were empowered by the generosity of our community. Each win was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when our support to their ambitions come together to invest in the dreams of young athletes, transforming hard work into glorious victories.

The recent District meet was nothing short of extraordinary for our school’s athletic teams, and the success can largely be attributed to the generous donations of sports equipment from parents, students, alumni, and community members. Clad in the presence of our gear and equipped with unity, they turned the competition into a showcase of

skill and heart. With their support, our athletes not only showcased their skills but also proved that investment in their potential pays off in remarkable ways.

As the District Meet unfolded, we witnessed firsthand the impact of those donations. Our teams demonstrated exceptional teamwork and skill, clinching victories in several sports. Each win was a testament to not just their hard work but also the support from the community that believed in their potential.

The donations have really helped build a stronger bond among our athletes. They weren’t just in it for themselves they were at their peak for also those who believed and supported them along the way.

This sense of togetherness pushed them to reach new heights, knowing they were all in this together. The athletes celebrated each other’s wins, creating a vibe that made

it clear their achievements were linked, reminding everyone that they were part of a shared journey toward greatness.

The unity and camaraderie shined bright, reflecting the great answer as the results of the support were evident, BSHS Badminton Team’s Woman’s Double Aclon and Daigo placed 2nd place alongside Joshua Lance Roa and Jesus Narvasa whom also settle for 2nd runner up, John Kenneth Masilang bags first place on long jump and triple jump while Pia Kyle Tano secures 4th and 5th place on 100 meter and 200 meter run and our very own Volleyball team secured 2nd place returning home with a remarkable achievement.

The sight of our athletes celebrating together with medals around their necks was a reminder of how far they’ve come, and it filled everyone with immense pride.
