JOHN CULLEN LIGHTING

As a Lighting Designer at John Cullen Lighting, an award-winning practice, I have gained valuable experience in the lighting industry. I learned from leading experts, including Sally Storey, how to understand the essence of luxury design in residential properties.

The end-to-end service that the company delivers provides complete peace of mind, and the bespoke creative lighting service, enhanced with exceptional products from John Cullen and third-party companies, has allowed me to deliver perfect lighting across all projects.

I have experience coordinating with a full range of trade professionals in the construction industry and take responsibility for ensuring a high level of perfection is achieved.

The bespoke design service produces understated, sophisticated lighting designs that transform architecture and interior design through the power of light.

Nestled in the heart of Essex, Norsey Road was a grand family home that epitomizes opulence while seamlessly blending functionality with comfort. The client wanted us to deliver a holistic lighting solution for both the vast interiors and the picturesque surrounding landscape of this sprawling newly built property, spanning four meticulously crafted floors, tailored to the family’s everyday needs.

As part of the team, I was responsible for the design and execution of this project, which involved evolving the design, holding biweekly coordination meetings, and refining revisions based on developments from other trade professionals as the property progressed in its construction.

NORSEY ROAD

The lighting design served as a cornerstone, orchestrating the ambiance and seamlessly guiding transitions between communal gathering spaces and intimate retreats. Our lighting design brought this Essex masterpiece to life, the culmination of our collaborative efforts was a harmonious synergy of architecture, interiors, and lighting. Every detail has been meticulously crafted to pay homage to the client’s heritage, creating a space that feels both personal and authentic. The success of the project was also recognized when it won the International Design & Architecture Awards in 2024.

Lighting a new build provides an opportunity to work with a blank canvas, to create an inspiring, bespoke layer of design for each client. Established on the Southeast coast in West Wittering, Paddock House was a property where the early involvement and architectural design provided ample opportunities to incorporate luxury lighting throughout.

I took on the project individually, designing and managing it using my expertise as a Lighting Designer. The attention to detail displayed in the result demonstrates my ability to achieve this, allowing the lighting scheme to seamlessly integrate into the wider context.

We collaborated closely with the designers and

Glen Lui, a luxury, chalet-style private property situated in a Scottish National Park, was considered a holiday home for a prestigious Scottish family, with no expense spared for the new build to provide ultimate comfort for the client and their guests. The lighting played a key role in achieving this.

The ground floor accommodated the bedroom suites, the first floor comprising all the communal spaces, and the basement facilitated entertainment areas, providing unique and wonderful lighting opportunities.

To celebrate the breathtaking spiral staircase, we accentuated its sweeping design with a sleek, linear lighting detail, navigating the complexities of concealed steel frames within the walls. The vaulted timber-clad ceilings on the first floor were celebrated with a simple, yet effective linear strip that complemented the warmth of the material and highlighted its grain.

Lavish artwork, accompanied with extravagant decorative pieces, permeated through the interiors. Collaboration and refined proposals achieved a design that harmonized aesthetic vision with technical precision. The combination of expertise and prowess from everyone involved allowed this property to manifest, remaining a memorable project in my professional career.

Wootton Place, an elegant grade II listed Georgian property in Oxfordshire, came with a multitude of outbuildings, a wall garden, and an expansive wider garden with a cricket field and pavilion. Restoring the building to its former glory while keeping within its traditional forms while drawing it into the modern era was the aim of the project.

WOOTTON

This project was particularly interesting as it was a refurbishment of the entire lighting design for the property, as well as including major uplifts from an interior design perspective.

As part of the project, a wellness centre was created, including a gym, swimming pool, spa, sauna, massage, and treatment room, allowing us to create a lighting scheme that both energized and endorsed the feeling of relaxation.

Responsible for the design and management of this property, I welcomed the diversity that came with the old and new parameters and varying interior styles. Coordination and collaboration were essential in achieving a considerate design.

As low-level plant lighting and uplighting to sentinels draw your attention outwards, erasing the threshold between indoors and out, the result was a flexible and successful scheme, highlighting artworks, and providing an atmospheric space to be in.
