As a second year student, I have been able to develop a myriad of skills ranging from CAD and product visualisation to sketching, graphics and prototyping. This skill set has allowed me to work exceedingly well in group settings and projects helping to solve and combat issues through product design.

REGA Litter Picker, designed for sustainability utilising sustainable and cost effective manufacturing methods, built to last.

Summary

Objective

“To design a high end litter picker in the style of the brand REGA, retailing for £50-60, incorporating sustainable materials and manufacturing.”

The aim is to design a product that makes picking litter more convenient and worthwhile as an investment.

Ideation Concept Development

Renders

Sketching a myriad of concepts different to the conventional litter picker. The standard model felt needlessly complicated for the function it performs, I ideate, then prototyped, a range of ideas that helped influence the final design.

Exploring Development

3D Printing a variety of shapes + mechanisms of litter picking (Left) - Then laser cutting, combined with more 3D printing the final prototype (Below) - Was fully functional, 1:1 in scale and extremely robust.

Evian Hold-All.

Evian Hold-All is a newer ,more verstaile type of packaging that opens out into multiple configurations whilst still retaining the same specficiations for size + Weight as normal shrink wrap packaging, contributing towards sustainability in packaging.

2nd Largest Water Brand

A brand synonymous with healthy hydration and wellness since 1978. The brand was chosen as they have a large drive for sustainability in their products.

Committed to using 100% recycled plastic by 2025. No virgin plastic to be added into the economy.

Evian bottles are, on average, made from 43% recycled plastic in the UK. 58% of plastic used for bottled is recycled.

The colours are based on Evian’s logo. However the main hue was to remain cardboards naturally bleached colour for sustainability + cost.

E-Flute Cardboard was chosen primarily because of its strength to weight ratio and high crushing tolerances, important when stacking heavy bottles.

Key graphic, as inspired by the Chablais Mountain Range found in the region of Lake Geneva. Iconic design, implemented across the packaging.

Example set of the sketches that led into the final idea and the final prototype. Looked to stay within the boundaries of typical evian packaging for logistical reasons whilst maintaining that the packaging be able to protect the contents inside.

HOW IS IT USED?

BRIEF USER GUIDE

The Evian Hold-all can fold out into multiple configurations allowing it to be stored easier in certain areas and fold out easily for people of all ages. This also means that it can be easily stored in a variety of places including the kitchen and cupboard.

There are cut-out handles present throughout the design that make folding into the configurations much easier. It also allows for the entire box to be carried easily throughout a store. Logistically, the product has a flat design allowing it to be easily stacked one atop the other to be transported internationally quite easy.

Objective

To design a games controller that can be used by people with only one arm and other related disabilities for gaming.

The goal is to make a comfortable controller viable at competiting with existing ‘accessibility’ devices.

Features

Marketing & Light branding

Uniplay is intended to be used as a games controller and a tool for entertainment on television, namely on smart TV’s. A lot of people already use their Xbox/PS5 for streaming rather than using a TV license, and so would be marketed as a multi-functional product of that nature. Similarly, it should be marketed towards disabled gamers who only have function in one hand, but not limited to that market due to it being a significantly lower market potential - it should pan multiple groups of consumers rather than just one outlined in the original brief. Rair

A new way to wash smaller items of clothing or fabrics, without having to set up a full load in the washing machine. Designed to save on energy bills.

Cost of living concerns and climate change are major drivers of consumer behaviour.

60% of UK consumers are using less gas or electricity within their homes, 7 out of 10 of these are aged between 55-64.

Consumers are increasingly seeking ways to cut energy and water consumption

18% turned off their fridge or freezer to reduce energy bills.

One of the biggest trends of 2023 going into 2024, people are looking to save money around their homes to reduce energy bills, the biggest contributor towards the increased cost of livng.

The product can be marketed towards people looking to be more ecoconscious, trend forecasting is highly suggestive of the younger generations being more into sustainability and sustainable products, yet it also suggests they’re the poorest age group. There’s a market opportunity for cheap products, that can save young people money whilst encourage a sustainable lifestyle.

Storyboard

How to use the product

Rair is extremely easy to setup and use, with simple instrutions to follow. The lid, or both lids are unscrewed and taken off (01, 02); then deteregent and water should be added into the capsule (03, 04); the small items of clothing, or cleaning towels or any fabric is then to be added (05); the lid is put back on, and the spinning action can commence, simply spinning the product back and forth thanks to the ball bearings (06).

During summer 2023 I worked with Jon Marshall’s team at Pentagram, London, working on a myriad of in-house and live projects.

I was involved in; Structural design for a substantial exhibition stand. Concept + CAD work on a bottle redesign. An in-house client packaging project. An in-house multi-disciplinary sustainability project.

Worked on different iterations of the bottle within solidworks, illustrator and AUTOCAD. Including the base, body and lid.

I was involved in the communication between the manufacturing engineers in their international plant, editing engineering drawings to fit their standards.
