Fire Station 6 expands the Lawrence Fire Department’s accesibility in Northwest Lawrence. This fire station has been designed with a focus on health and efficiency. To emphasize health, the building is separated by the apparatus bay from common spaces. Under the large, rectangular roof is a window ribbon that spans across the whole building providing natural light and improving firefighter mental health. The building is densely
created for access to the apparatus bay. This organization allows for efficiency in getting to the apparatus bay in time for emergencies.

Pioneer Cemetary, Lawrence Wood, Illustrator, and Revit
Professor Xiaobo Quan Fall 2024

The University of Kansas is lacking in public facilities on its West campus as well as a place for its students to relieve their stress. This nondenominational meditation center provides a space for meditation, reflection, or prayer for all. It is located adjacent to the Pioneer Cemetary, so it is also a space that can be used
by the families of loved ones who are buried there. The design of this building is geometric and hexagonal to connect its users to nature. The overall structure is guided by the idea of a hexagonal grid that can be seen in the room layout as well as the frame under the roof.

As you enter the space, you are brought into the entry. From the entry people are able to branch off to either public or private spaces.
To the North is the large public gathering space where people can practice group meditation or prayer. To the East is a space for individual meditation that can be used by two people. This space brings in natural light and views of nature to connect people to their surroundings. The building is complete with an outdoor
space that has views of the cemetary. It also provides people with places to rest, either with a hardwood surface under their feet or softer grass. This outdoor space has natural light brought in through the overarching roof with a hexigonal skylight centered over the space.

This urgent care facility provides North Lawrence with a space for health services. This will provide the local community with a place for drop in appointments whenever needed during the day. North Lawrence hosts much of the night life in the city, so this urgent care will be available during the night for bar goers. The

brick façade of this building boasts double hung windows to blend in with existing buildings in the area, while the roof and building footprint differentiate themselves for multiple reasons. The roof is broken up in the front to bring importance to the entry and exam rooms. The exam rooms are staggered for views of South Park.

This building is organized with two key ideas: Separation of public and private; views from public spaces. In this design, public spaces are oriented to the west, while private spaces are oriented to the east. The public spaces branch off from the prominent entry and waiting space to either the exam rooms on south side of the building and the lab and x-ray rooms on the west side. The exam rooms are staggered along the south side of the building to prioritize equal views of south park. The hallway connecting the exam rooms is illuminated with a clerestory from the north. The hallway hosts three nurse stations, each with a view of three exam rooms assigned to them. The form of this building is geometrically tilted in the shape of a parallelogram which helps exemplify the views of south park from the exam rooms.

3D Print, Bristol, Foam Core
Professor Daniel Finnell
Fall 2023

This project was inspired by the Exeter Library designed by Louis Kahn. It is a lightbox which involves creating a object to capture light in different ways as it passes throught the object. The design carved in the foamcore faces is similar to the section view of the bookshelves as well as the view of the ceiling in Kahn’s design. The
model was designed using 22 total pieces, consisting of 12 panels cut from foamcore, 11 supporting pieces keeping the model alighned, and a base for extra support. Once all of the pieces are assembled, they create a viewing experience guided by the path of shadows going through the structure.

This project included the creation of a box to house the pieces so that it can be assembled by another user in the future. To create the box, museum board was lazer cut from a design created using Adobe Illustrator. The box components can be seen underneath. The box design includes a lazer cut design of the front and back panels of the lightbox structure. The design includes an acrylic panel on the front of the box to add weight to the box for a better box opening
experience for the user. To have the pieces line up in this acrylic design the box includes an insert to keep the pieces in place. The box is complete with some more lazer cut details on the sides of the box, with another cutout of the back panel and the toy name etched into the sides with playful lettering.
