Our attraction to ruin and decay is not a longing for the past, but a desire for visceral participation in the irreversibility of time. Ruin Substantiated examines the promise afforded in the adaptation of our existing heritage buildings that lie in ruin. The Falk brewery offers the opportunity to explore a deeper strategy for reuse beyond salvaging surviving structure, and to promote connection to history. We should not impose our aesthetic will upon it. Successful transformation allows the heritage, form, and spatial character of an extant composition to reveal itself - for us to delight in its detail and rejuvenation.

student interaction

The UWMBLOCK is a design intervention proposal for the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee student union. Built within the union’s transient atrium, this proposal creates program spaces within space to drive student activity. The ‘block’ gives students areas to study, interact, and relax while also providing better visual and spatial connection to an active union.

neighborhood + community

Sherman Park - Milwaukee: This design proposal seeks to bring members of the community, especially its youth, together in inclusive & open spaces. The park will be used for all types of community and family events where a vacant lot once stood. The spaces are open and accessible to encourage engagement between residents of the neighborhood.

tectonic study

The goal of this project was to use tectonics to inform the development of a new fashion school in downtown Cincinnati. Plane, line, mass, and void were used to create usable space from a design language developed throughout the course of a semester. The development occurred with a focus on design through section.

heritage & growth

This proposal submits a vision for Unity Temple’s Unitarian Congregation in the form of a new vistor center, congregational meeting spaces, space for a research facility, and a library. These solutions utilize timber as the primary material in part to respect the innovative concrete of FLW’s masterpiece. The site placement aims to create a reverence for an iconic landmark.

dance & detail

‘Proscenium’ is a Milwaukee dance center housing two dance troupes - one modern, one classical. The project is located on the Milwaukee River across from the Marcus Center. It includes a RiverWalk section as well as a new outdoor performance park. The primary building form evokes a curtain using perforated stainless steel fin elements.

Cosmos, last in the line of a long-forgotten lineage that established humanity’s last refuge on the moon, was a degenerate. The lunar colony of Lucet was once the single remaining beacon of humanity, shining on the surface of the moon. Earth had grown feeble and weak, constant decimation of crops and livestock followed protracted periods of nuclear war and devastation. Humanity had been forced above the ash clouds to seek the waning rays of life from its slowly dying star. His father, Icarus, had gambled all remaining shred of his dynasty’s wealth on an ill-conceived gambit to re-ignite our sun. Cosmos was truly debased. He had perpetually relied on cheating, lying, and stealing for survival.

Society had decayed, and Cosmos with it. What of humanity remained had fallen - scavenging for heat, oxygen, and food - infighting and anxiety ran rampant. Fear had degraded Lucet into a state of desperation. Fighting and destruction had led to a collapse. Depraved and grasping for survival, Cosmos had done nothing to change. To those desperate few remaining around him, he was a miscreant. Collapse brought with it the end of human dominion. Sudden Nuclear detonation warnings signaled a call to the remaining escape vessel. Predisposition to seek shelter led to an erratic scramble, though no safety awaited. As Cosmos frantically attempted to board this pod, an unknown assailant, outfitted in a similar life support suit, seized him from behind to pry him from the hull. This gave way to pure instinct. Cosmos craned his neck back and swung with barbaric strength at his rival. He was, savage, primal.

This brutish act had succeeded in knocking back the assailant. Shattering the faceplate, while leaving long cracks in that which dealt the blow. Without word or thought Cosmos took refuge inside as the shell began its launch. The escape pod’s internal safety mechanisms had been foraged long ago. As Cosmos watched the attacker’s outline disappear below, the ship abruptly burst. Cosmos was sent spiraling perilously into the vast darkness. A guttural noise erupted from deep inside Cosmos as he watched the small cracks spider-web outward mere inches from his eyes. The explosion had done untold damage. His feeble breath rasped “Cosmos” as the glass violently ruptured, taking with it all breath, all life.

The suit’s distress signal switch pulverized permanently to ‘repeat’. The last growl diminished to a faint loop filled by static. The radio’s photovoltaic cell slowly drifted toward the glinting light of the fading star. The universe was indifferent, at peace. Soundless calm had returned to it. All of Cosmos that endured, contained in a feeble crackle. A low grunt, endlessly echoing inaudibly to the universe, naught but a grumble.
