A city with a common glitch at the block scale. A wasted potential.

The site chosen is in PrĂ­ncipe Real, a particularly busy area of Lisbon.

An urban park to escape from a frenetic daily busy routine. The visitor has turned around two corners and has stepped in onto a white gravel mantle, Lisbon's historic cobblestone, and is now enclosed by old brick walls and new concrete masses. Here, he sees stairs and spontaneous vegetation together with a few trees growing under the large light wells.

There are four groups of three exhibition rooms each and only three staircases. These rooms are oriented according to the limit lines of the lot. Exterior and interior separation enhances the isolation of each group. Light comes in directly through a skylight in the central room and indirectly through the entry doors and two other windows on the adjacent rooms.

To deviate the existing canal to a vast system of riparian wetlands connected to the city's hidrographic system.

To reuse the canal's infrastructure as a linear promenade that gathers citizens and connects them to their main landscape asset

Protects a large tract of open land with capacity to hold and infiltrate large quantities of rainfall and stormwater

Designing a new order for a large city park working with existing built infrastructure and proposing new uses and programs

Mixed-use building in Lisbon

Lisbon, Portugal

The site sits at the end of the Alcântara valley on the limit of an old shoreline and therefore in a place of transition between an old residential neighbourhood (north) and a new platform over the river Tagus. The industry has left this part of the city with various large empty lots and now there is need for dwellings and tertiary uses of the land. Therefore, the program of the building consists in a mixed-use of collective housing, commerce and services.

The intervention aimed to mitigate the common flood problems of this flat and downstream area, to respond to two heavy traffic axis and to an ambitious program with low surroundings. The first urban idea was for the building to offer a large free space for different uses to take place in the centre and simultaneously provide infiltration areas to slow down the storm water streams in long and strong periods of rainfall.

The concept is an 'L' inclined building that responds to the existing topography as a way of letting the local population and passers-by go through the corners of the 'U' solution, into the central free space.

An apartment in Cascais

Work in Progress - 2019 | Professional individual work

Cascais, Portugal

The building from 1978 is situated in a privileged location between a park and a public square and exceptionally close to the ocean.

Besides some minor updates and maintnance works, the apartment has suffered no deep refurbishment until today. Therefore, the apartment was in need for structural changes as the uses and apropriation of spaces notably changed since forty years ago.

One clear example of this phenomena is how the kitchen has become more of a social area instead of a service one and how a small room and bathroom for the maid gain now new value for the owners.

Therefore, the intervention aimed to give space for a new larger kitchen, in direct contact with the dining room while simultaneously enlarging the previous small room. The solution also solved a troubled interior room by splitting it into two: a laundry space adjacent to the kitchen and a closet for the smaller room.
