WAHROONGA MULTI RESIDENTIAL

The development consists in 10 townhouses in a prime location within an astonishing, protected and leafy conservation area. Right in the center of the site, there is a heritage listed bungalow and its immense garden, which is also listed and filled with mature redgums, kauri pine, figs and protected native grasses. The proposal consists in splitting the heritage house into two apartments without compromising its historical value and also to guarantee the heritage incentives for a multi residential development within a R2 zone. In addition to that, two more buildings were proposed. One on the southern side of the street elevation and another one behind the bungalow. The new townhouses were carefully designed and the materials language is a direct response to the original house.

BRONTE HOUSE SINGLE DWELLING

Designed for a family of five on an exceptional location, very steep terrain and relatively small for all family’s needs and requirements. A third story was squeezed under the height limit without compromising the design outcome, very much the opposite, the height constrain was a great opportunity to explore a very unique and sloped brick roof. Multiple specific and innovative construction details were produced in collaboration with the builder and contractors. The brief was a simple house, which required low maintenance, bright and private. The use of raw materials provided the simplicity and the low maintenance requested. The skylights allowed natural light to shine the middle section of the house. And the brick screens on the windows facing the neighbouring houses guaranteed privacy.

WICKS PARK MULTI RESIDENTIAL

Mixed use development in the heart of Marrickville, located right next to Wicks Park Tennis Courts just 10 minutes distance from the New Marrickville Metro.

The design is based on an industrial look to blend and contemplate the context of the surrounding area. The brickwork on the lower levels keeps the inner west housing feel and the upper levels metal cladding is a reflection of the roofs of the old warehouses.

The project is part of the city’s restructuring plan and it help supplementing the city’s needs for additional living space towards the Inner West.

The construction documentation was highly detailed as per Toga standards and services coordination was heavily implemented in order to achieve a more efficient construction time and reduced materials waste.

TECHO/TETO NGO

TECHO is a youth led non-profit organization present in Latin America & the Caribbean. Through the collaborative work of families living in extreme poverty with youth volunteers, TECHO seeks to overcome poverty in slums.

TECHO is convinced that poverty can be permanently eradicated if society as a whole recognizes poverty as a priority and actively works towards overcoming it.

TECHO’S model of intervention focuses on the most isolated slums in Latin America. The collaborative work of families and young volunteers who work to produce concrete solutions to the problems of poverty is the key driver of these interventions. TECHO promotes a continuous community strengthening process, with community development as the most essential component of the intervention model.

LOCATION: Curitiba, Brazil

WORK DESCRIPTION:

Developing and reviewing projects with communities facing extreme poverty, engaging a team of volunteers and assisting the principal activities of the NGO within the community (Mass Interviewing, Construction of Emergency Housing and Social Certification).

The initial phase of the intervention model consists of entering the slums and determining the issues that plague the families in need.

In the second phase, in response to the identified needs of the community, there is an implementation and management of solutions in the areas of livability, education, labor and other existing problems. These solutions are developed through collaboration between volunteers and local families, improving individual and collective capacities for community self-management. Within this phase we emphasize the construction of transitional housing, which meets a need that is urgent and a priority in most slums. This creates a link of trust between the volunteers and the community since it is a concrete, tangible and achievable solution in the short term.

In order to deepen this process of community empowerment, a community-organizing committee is stablished. This is a meeting where community leaders and volunteers gather to discuss possible solutions to the most pressing problems of the slum.

In the third phase of the intervention, the application of lasting and sustainable solutions is promoted in slums. These include regularization of property, basic services, housing, infrastructure and local development.
