Castel Sant Angelo
The Castel Sant’ Angelo, also known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian is a castle in Parco Adriano, Rome, Italy. It was designed by the architect Demetriano and built between the years 135 and 139 AD. The Roman architectural style is represented in this structure with the concrete rounded buildings, the innovative use of the arch, and the amphitheatre style design.
The Roman Emperor Hadrian wanted to design a mausoleum to house the remains of himself and his family. The original design from Hadrian is a large decorated column-like structure with a garden on top. Demetriano, Hadrian’s architect, took that idea, and expanded the singular cylinder into a fortress of multiple tall cylinder structures to construct a castle.

Parti Diagram
When divided by two perpendicular axis, all four quadrants of the building’s structure are symmetrical and balanced to each other. Each segment contains a corner of the fortress wall, one polygonal structure, and a quarter of the main rounded structure in the center.

Natural Light
While the bottom portion of the building has little to no fenestration, the top half of the central structure has ample arched and rectangular windows that act as light wells to bring in natural light.

Mass Diagram
There are definite hierarchy in the massing of the entire structure of the Castel Sant’ Angelo. The light grey represents smaller structures such as the fortress and smaller column structures. The darkest grey represents the focal point of the entire structure, which is the center and heart of the castle.
Geometry
Taking the inspiration of the cylindrical building structure, Demetriano designed polygonal structures around a circular column structure, with a square fortress around the perimeter.
