As I write this note, it goes without saying that we are living in unprecedented times. The COVID-19 global pandemic has impacted all aspects of life and altered our collective perception of what the “new normal” will be. The health crisis has claimed the lives of many and decimated the economy. And although we are all hurting, we will get through this together. The most difficult situations always seem to bring out the best in all of us.

Make sure to read the articles on Mr. Hussain Budhani who went above and beyond to care for his community and how the Atlanta Retailers Foundation made a critical donation of personal protective equipment.

To help Members mitigate the risk of transmitting the coronavirus as well as to safeguard the health and safety of consumers and employees, ARA has partnered with CINTAS to visit every Member location and sanitize high touch point areas throughout the store and thoroughly clean and sanitize the restrooms. Stores are being visited as safely and as quickly as possible. To further assist Members in the fight against the spread of COVID19, social distancing signage was mailed to all ARA Member locations in mid-April. If you did not receive a signage package, please call the ARA office for a replacement set. Keep in mind that going forward, consumers will be much more discerning as to where they choose to shop, not only because of convenience or price, but also because of the steps that business owners take to ensure their stores are safe and clean. I also want to remind Members that price gouging laws will remain in effect until May 13th. Please don’t risk severe penalties and a damaged reputation for the sake of short-term gain.

In the midst of the uncertainty caused by high unemployment, an area that we all inadvertently overlook is Safety & Security. Stay tuned for upcoming Safety & Security webinars that will be presented in order to raise awareness during the current pandemic. For additional information, go to the ARA website and download the Safety & Security Manual from the Safety and Security section or learn about important Coronavirus updates in the COVID-19 resource center.

As of today, nearly 40% of Member stores have been reset to the 2020 Cold Vault Program. Despite COVID-19 limitations, our vendor partners and staff have diligently continued working towards the goal of resetting all Member stores. We appreciate the efforts of our Members, vendor partners and staff for continuing to operate despite facing severe challenges and limitations.

I would like to acknowledge and thank retiring Chairman, Karim Thobhani, retiring Treasurer, Alnoor Kassam and retiring Board Members Murad Jiwani and Jamal Tajuddin. We see greater heights for the Association and Members because of their efforts and those that came before them. Their work gives us a stronger foundation upon which to build. We will continue to further the momentum they have set in motion.

Please join me in welcoming our newest Board Members, Ishkander Malani and Raffeeq Iqbal. We look forward to their experience and contributions that will benefit Members and the Association. Quick Thoughts from the CEO

Several new words have come into our vocabulary in recent weeks and one of those is: pivot.

I actually think that this is a great topic to briefly examine. The question is: how will ARA members pivot after COVID-19 has been resolved? Specifically, is it a time and opportunity to “reinvent” your store to match up to new concerns from consumers? Let’s look at 4 areas of opportunity: 1.

Total Store Sanitization Restrooms Social Distancing Consumer & Community Connection

None of these are radically new ideas, but all 4 need to be thought through for each store to maximize success. The new reality will yield a consumer who is more savvy regarding germs and retailers who are addressing this issue.

SANITIZATION: In my opinion, this imperative must be a priority. It will be important to frequently and routinely sanitize your operations for the safety and well-being of both your consumers and your employees. It will also be important to communicate this clearly, so that it is known that you take the matter seriously.

To not do so will come across as being “tone deaf”. The world is going through a major change and there is a lot of education happening about germs and the spread of such. To not address this proactively and aggressively will put your location at risk to competitors who do take this seriously.

ARA highly supports the recommendation to subscribe to a company which will address this important step on an on-going basis.

RESTROOMS: Certainly, this links closely with the above topic of sanitization. However, it is the opinion of the ARA Board that this is the perfect time to take it to a new level. Cleanliness in restrooms has already been a huge factor for consumers selecting your location over others.

Bottom-line: Customers associate clean bathrooms with the overall quality and cleanliness of a store. It can be a significant differentiator on where to shop. On average, according to C-Store Decisions, 1 in every 10 shoppers will visit your store bathroom. What image are you conveying to that individual. Are they impressed that there is focus in this area? There is a study that 50% of people encountering a dirty restroom will discuss it with friends and family. This is not the kind of publicity that you want.

Cleanliness is a signal that you care and that you want customers to be comfortable at your location. It can even be a part of branding, in that you want to exceed customer expectations and that you want to stay ahead of competitors in this critical area. Ideas to consider:

Consider upgrades: i.e. fixtures, tiles, mirrors Communicate both purpose and importance to employees… this is far more than just cleaning the bathrooms Timeliness: restrooms should be cleaned once per shift and checked hourly… raise the standards!

Provide a fact sheet to employees of clean restroom qualities Create a checklist of detailed duties for employees… have them check duties off and turn the sheet in for review Provide the correct tools and chemicals Communicate on the mirror or wall your commitment to “clean restrooms”

SOCIAL DISTANCING: It remains to be seen how long social distancing will occur in our society. However, it is now in the consciousness that “space” equates to increased safety. To this end, utilizing floor decals and sneeze guards at the register will be viewed as conscientious by customers.

In the end, you want customers to feel comfortable and safe in your store. To accomplish this, it will take proactive action on your part. Take the step, as it will be worth it. Remember, different people view life through different lenses. There are different degrees of cleanliness and safety for each individual… it is best that we not be complacent in this area!

CONSUMER & COMMUNITY CONNECTION: There is a strong belief that “we’re all in this together”. Consumers appreciate a retailer who gives back to first responders and to the community. ARA has provided tools for accomplishing this: door or window signs thanking first responders, and even versions that offer a free small coffee to first responders in uniform.

Communicate that appreciation to your community. There are folks that have taken risks to keep us safe and healthy. We should communicate our appreciation and call them out for their bravery.

CONCLUSION: In the end, we are in a time of change. The retailers who recognize this and address the key areas will be rewarded. Let’s be one of them. Let’s strive to be different… to be better. Let’s surprise and delight our consumers by going the extra step. Your overall business will be better as a result. It is time to pivot.

As living proof that one person can make a world of difference in the middle of a crisis, Mr. Hussain Budhani took it upon himself to come to the aid of his community and customers. Mr. Budhani, who has been through thick and thin when it comes to serving his customers during times of hardships and uncertainty, did not hesitate to come to the aid of his community. During the height of the COVID-19 Corona Virus pandemic, Mr. Budhani donated 10,000 juice and milk cartons, along with loaves of bread, to all the children that reside in Forsyth County and to any customers that wanted or needed these items.

The Commissioner of Forsyth County, The Honorable Ms. Cindy Jones Mills thanked Mr. Budhani for lending a helping hand in a time of need. The Commissioner posted Mr. Budhani’s generous gift on her social media platforms. News of the unsung hero spread fast as Mr. Budhani was profiled on WSB Channel 2 Action News.

When asked by WSB Channel 2 News as to the reason for giving away groceries, Mr. Budhani said: “We love this community, myself and my family have always been here to help.” He further added, “It’s time to give back to the community and help those in need.”

ARF: Making a Difference

On the morning of Thursday, April 23rd, 2020, the Atlanta Retailers Foundation (ARF) donated 1000 KN95 masks to the Eastside Medical Center located in Snellville, GA. The CEO Trent Lind and his entire team, including COO John Hoover, ER Physician Dr. Riddhi Merchant, Physician Relations Cindy Ferst, ED Director Dr. Matt Goldstein and Lead PA Christina Eid came to thank the ARF team, including ARF Trustee Shyna Mistry Punjani and ARF Trustee Jainee Pandya and receive the KN95 masks.

ER Physician Dr. Riddhi Merchant helped with connecting the ARF Team with Eastside Medical Center and ARF Trustee Jainee Pandya helped with the procurement of the masks. The Facebook page of Gwinnett Magazine and Eastside Medical Center also posted this on their respective social media pages.

Merchandising the Strike Zone Helps Convert Shoppers into Buyers Leverage strategic points of inspiration to boost sales A typical convenience store that sells gas may attract almost 1,500 people to its lot per day, according to Coca-Cola research.

Only 71% of those would-be shoppers will go inside the store, and approximately 40% enter the store, but don’t buy any merchandise. That means every day about 1,000 convenience store visitors leave without purchasing an item other than fuel.

These numbers can add up to a sizable opportunity.

The Atlanta Retailers Association (ARA) is committed to helping Members realize this opportunity by reaching would-be shoppers with opportunities for purchase to convert them into buyers.

THE OPPORTUNITY The same research also shows that convenience store success requires two types of conversions: lot-to-visit, which is the percentage of people who arrive on the lot and go inside the store; and visit-to-purchase, those who go inside the store and make a purchase. By improving lot-to-visit conversion by just one percentage point, a single convenience store could see a significant boost in incremental total sales, as well as a bump for the Non-Alcoholic Ready-to-Drink (NARTD) category.

UNDERSTANDING TRAFFIC PATTERNS Of the 1,000 visitors who go inside the convenience store, only about 37% purchase NARTD beverages, which equates to approximately 370 potential buyers per outlet every day. Coke’s research highlights not only convenience store transactions, but also shopper traffic, revealing that 26% of shoppers who enter

convenience store visit cold vault non-alcoholic beverages first, followed by salty snacks (15%), confections (12%) and dispensed non-alcoholic beverages (10%).

“When we think of bundling opportunities, shopper behavior suggests that the instore ‘real estate’ that’s between first destination categories and the checkout gives us multiple opportunities to drive bigger baskets if we can connect the dots for the shopper,” says Scott Tillman, director, retail channel strategy & commercialization for Coca-Cola. Put another way, of every 100 people who visit convenience store beverage categories, what proportion stops to actually shop and engage? Of those who stop and engage, what proportion actually purchases?

While cold vault beverages draw higher traffic, they get a lower proportion of visitors to shop and buy.

However, the high traffic areas between the vault and the register (strike zone) – as well as the vault itself – are fertile ground for priming incremental purchases with NARTD beverages. “This suggests that the vault would benefit most from tactics that increase shopability (consistent layout & planograms) and engagement,” says Tillman.

A common element in most major retail outlets is the placement of cold equipment at the register or checkout area or strike zone. The objective of these placements is to create an incremental purchase opportunity. While some customers will purchase an item other than fuel, all customers will approach the register area.

COLD EQUIPMENT PLACEMENT AT ARA STORES In 2020, The Atlanta Retailers Association Marketing team is launching an aggressive campaign to place Front End Merchandiser (FEM) Coolers in Member stores in high traffic areas. Any equipment placed needs to follow the priority placement guidance in order to qualify for payment. Members can earn up to $4,000 per year by placing FEM cold equipment. Placement fees are in addition to the profitability of products sold through. Call the ARA Compliance Manager, your MSR or the ARA office for more details on this program.

Consumers Reset Shopping Habits Here are seven predictions about how the pandemic could permanently alter the way we shop.

What will retail look like after social distancing and stayat-home edicts are removed? “There’s an old phrase, it takes 30 days to make a habit,” said Erik Rosenstrauch, founder of Fuel Partnerships. “Now we’ve all had 30 days stuck at home to begin developing new habits.”

Here are seven predictions of how the coronavirus pandemic could change the retail landscape, the Boston Globe reports: 1. Price sensitivity will rise. “We went into this with a sense of price ignorance; we didn’t care about prices at all,” said David Marcotte, senior vice president at Kantar Consulting. “And now we’re coming out the other side.”

2. Takeout will continue to be popular. “So many restaurants will shutter, but the talent of their chefs and founders will continue,” said Sucharita Kodali, a retail analyst with Forrester Research. “What you’ll see is models … where people are operating restaurants out of their home or professional kitchens, and they make the menu available for pickup or delivery.”

3. Comfort grocery shopping will stick around. Shoppers have moved to the center of the store for trusted brands and longer shelf life products. Michael Nestrud, a Boston R&D consultant for the food industry, said, “Part of me wonders if there’s a cultural trust about it being fundamentally safe, even if it might not be the healthiest for us.”

4. Customers still will like store pickups. After the pandemic ends, grocery stores will likely push in-store pickup over delivery orders. Aaron Cheris, head of Bain & Co.’s retail practice, said curbside pickup comprises 40% to 50% of e-commerce orders at some retailers. “It’s super-convenient and feels superfast,” he said.

5. E-commerce and mobile payments will continue to be popular. These experts predict that online shopping will soar, but others say shoppers will eagerly flock to bricks-and-mortar stores.

6. Local will reign. “As much as the media talks about online purchasing and how Amazon is taking over the world, the American shopper has recalibrated over the past few weeks and realized their local store is the place where they go to get the products they need,” Rosenstrauch said.

Visa Delays Fuel Dispenser EMV Deadline New date set six months later

Visa will delay the EMV liability shift deadline for automatic fuel dispensers to accept chip cards from Oct. 1, 2020, to April 17, 2021. The responsibility for fraudulent transactions will shift to fuel retailers that have not upgraded their dispensers to the new standard.

The change in date is in response to letters NACS, PMAA, SIGMA and NATSO sent to the four credit card networks—Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover—that manage the EMV liability shift. The letters requested the October deadline be delayed given the shelter-in-place or stay-athome orders because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"The EMV delay comes at a time when convenience stores' main objective is keeping stores open to meet the essential needs of their customers and communities. We are glad to see Visa recognize the unequivocal economic impact coronavirus is having on businesses, and we hope the other major networks will follow suit," said Anna Ready Blom, director of government relations for Alexandria, Va/-based NACS. Industry letters requesting a delay in the deadline pushed Visa and the other card brands to wait to set a new deadline until the crisis has passed. Foster City, Calif.based Visa instead opted to set the new deadline six months after the original Oct. 1, 2020, date.
