BIOGRAPHY Born in Rome, Luigi Castelli Gattinara di Zubiena uses the camera for more than forty years.

Teenager, student of art school, spends his spare time photographing watches and objects of family placing them along the walks of Lungotevere.

People do not interest him: “They have a life, a story, and to me it seems indiscreet secure them with the camera lens. Things instead are silent interlocutors and they don’t condition.”

So begins the journey that becomes passion and profession, art and vocation.

From Rome he moved to Milan, then in Caracas, Venezuela, and again in Milan, where he currently lives and works.

Along with the daily photos for Advertising (he cooperates with the most prestigious International Advertising Agencies) he cultivates and preserves his passion for Flemish painters of seventeenth century, flooding with light the subjects of his works and giving them an unusual three-dimensional plasticity. “Shots on canvas”, someone wittily defined his works.

Subsequently from creation of his works increase, fifteen years ago, the project of “dress” the “Elements”, entering the visual beauty in the everyday usability.

Objects not only to be preserved but to be lived, as furnishing accessories and of life.

A extensive series of exhibition in Italy and abroad, including the prestigious of Paris, Berlin and New York, have confirmed Luigi Gattinara as a witness to this way of being an art photographer.

Luigi Gattinara has made “still life” an art form rediscovering through the lens of a camera.

The choice of the artist adopt printing techniques that allow the choice of any support is a further tribute to the instrumentation of today and the exaltation of an instrument instead has its own history, albeit recent, but certainly consolidated in frequentation of the image.

Implicit in the vibrant still life photography of Luigi Gattinara is an anachronistic tension between subject and medium. Influenced by 17th century Dutch painting and old masters such as Caravaggio, Gattinara’s images achieve an almost painterly quality through light and color modifications. The result is what the artist refers to as a “time warp effect” in which still life as a formal study is “rediscovered through the lens of a camera.

A journey through twenty one pictures and as many emotions, twenty one still lifes where the element “culinary” always appears present, a visual and sensory way that accompanies us into articulated compositions where the inanimate protagonists evolve suddenly and before our eyes, in the portrait of a daily adventure.

Food, objects, glass, fabrics in a skilful and sophisticated play of light, but that expertly describe the shadows, light up life of its own and from supporting actors take the scene like a consumed actors.

Nothing is left to chance in the works of Gattinara and every single element has a precise symbolic value, so indispensable to the whole which will become the tale.

Everything is clean, basic, modern, not at all redundant and with an attention to detail that never becomes didactic. One gets the impression that the light emanating from these “paintings” is sufficient to make them move, as if they wanted produce the sounds that the kitchens emit to the passage of food.
