Celebrar e Repensar Júlio Resende (1917 | 2017) no Centenário do seu Nascimento — Lugar do Desenho Desde a sua criação, em 1993, e a inauguração das suas instalações, em 1997, que o Lugar do Desenho — Fundação Júlio Resende se dedica ao estudo, à preservação e à difusão do vasto acervo de desenhos do artista.

As atividades culturais e educativas que a Fundação tem desenvolvido estimulam uma leitura aberta do Desenho e uma reflexão multidisciplinar sobre a sua prática. Este ano, a Fundação está a celebrar o Centenário de Nascimento de Júlio Resende, através de um vasto programa de exposições temporárias, em que se integra esta iniciativa no Tribunal da Relação do Porto, para onde Júlio Resende realizou um painel a fresco. A exposição divide-se em dois núcleos: um que dará a conhecer a produção do artista para tribunais portugueses e que é parte de um significativo corpo de trabalhos instalados em espaços de fruição pública; outro que assinala a estreita relação entre a sua obra e a cidade do Porto.

Será mais uma oportunidade para aprofundar o conhecimento de facetas particulares da sua criação. Rever Júlio Resende é rever uma obra que resume a arte do século XX. É urgente repensá-la e reenquadrá-la na História da arte moderna e contemporânea. O Centenário de Nascimento do Pintor é o momento certo para esta ação.

To Celebrate and to Rethink Júlio Resende (1917 | 2017) in the Centenary of his Birth — Lugar do Desenho Since its creation, in 1993, and the inauguration of its facilities, in 1997, that the Lugar do Desenho — Fundação Júlio Resende dedicates itself to the study, preservation and diffusion of the vast collection of drawings of the artist. The cultural and educational activities which the Foundation has developed stimulate an open reading of the Drawing and a multidisciplinary reflection on its practice. This year, the Fundação Júlio Resende is celebrating the Centenary of the Birth of the Painter through an extensive program of temporary exhibitions, in which this initiative takes part. This event is located in the Tribunal da Relação do Porto to where Júlio Resende painted a fresco.

The exhibition is divided into two cores: one that speaks about Resende’s artistic production to Portuguese courts and which is part of a significant amount of public space works and another that marks the close relationship between the artist’s work and the city of Porto. This will be one more opportunity to deepen the knowledge of the particular facets of his creation.

Reviewing Júlio Resende is to review a work that summarises 20th century’s art. It is urgent to rethink and to reframe the History of the modern and contemporary art. The Centenary of the Painter is the right moment for this action.

Júlio Resende (1917 | 2011), born in Porto, is the author of a vast painting work, developed between the 30s of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century. He has concluded his Painting degree in the year of 1945 at the School of Fine Arts of Porto, where he would teach between 1958 and 1987. Throughout his career, Resende was distinguished with relevant awards. He performed works executed in techniques ranging from the ceramics to the stained glass and tapestry, which are installed in spaces from the north to the south of Portugal. In 1947 he settled down in Paris and traveled by France, Belgium, the Netherlands, England and Italy. In the years of 1949/50 Resende was a professor at the small ceramic school in Viana do Alentejo, during which he got along with the writer Vergílio Ferreira. In the 50’s Resende promoted the International Art Missions. In 1970 he was the responsible for the aesthetic orientation of the Portugal’s participation in the “Osaka World Exposition”, a relevant moment of his presence abroad.

In the 1990s, he reinforces the relationships with the Portuguese-speaking countries with art stays in Mozambique, Cape Verde and Goa. Resende died at the age of 93, on 21st September 2011 at his home in Valbom, Gondomar.

Júlio Resende — Biography Júlio Resende (1917 | 2011), natural do Porto, é autor de uma obra de pintura vastíssima, desenvolvida entre os anos 30 do século XX e a primeira década do século XXI. Concluiu a formação em Pintura, no ano de 1945, na Escola de Belas Artes do Porto, onde seria docente entre 1958 e 1987.

Ao longo da sua carreira, foi distinguido com relevantes prémios. Realizou obra pública com trabalhos executados em técnicas que vão da cerâmica ao fresco, do vitral à tapeçaria, que se encontram em espaços do norte a sul de Portugal. Em 1947 instala-se em Paris. Viajou por França, Bélgica, Holanda, Inglaterra e Itália. Nos anos de 1949/50 foi professor na pequena escola de cerâmica em Viana do Alentejo, período em que privou com o escritor Vergílio Ferreira. Nos anos 50 promoveu as Missões Internacionais de Arte. Em 1970 seria responsável pela orientação estética do Espetáculo de Portugal na “Exposição Mundial de Osaka”, momento relevante da sua presença no estrangeiro. Nos anos 90, reforça a relação com os países de língua portuguesa, promovendo diversas estadias artísticas em Moçambique, Cabo Verde e Goa. Faleceu aos 93 anos de idade, a 21 de setembro de 2011, na sua casa em Valbom, Gondomar.

A Lei das Doze Tábuas começa por uma prescrição que estabelece o seguinte: “se alguém é chamado a Juízo, compareça”.

Interrogo-me se este mandamento, além de aplicável a cada réu, não será válido também para todo o artista, se entendermos por chamada a Juízo não estritamente o ato de ser chamado a depor, mas antes o dever de o artista dar testemunho sobre o mundo e sobre o seu tempo.

A arte de Júlio Resende não é outra coisa, senão esse testemunho. Um único e mesmo testemunho, independente dos meios, dos lugares e dos temas que convoca.

Na Justiça e na Cidade, ou melhor, na Justiça como na Cidade, a arte de Júlio Resende é sempre e só a sua arte. É sempre e só o seu testemunho.

Para os espaços da Justiça, Resende criou afrescos, vitrais e painéis cerâmicos, pensados para espaços interiores e exteriores.

Contudo, independentemente dos suportes, também aqui o artista reitera a pesquisa formal e o cometimento ético que definem a sua obra.

Pela pesquisa formal, Resende mantém-se fiel à estética moderna e distancia-se da transcrição naturalista do real, pela interpretação que faz da figura humana, pela representação das formas animais e vegetais e pela estruturação pluridimensional do espaço pictórico.

Pelo cometimento ético e poético, Resende mantém-se fiel à expressão da condição social e existencial do ser humano, devendo sublinhar-se o facto de Resende ter sido o único artista que elegeu como tema da sua intervenção, no vasto programa artístico do Palácio da Justiça do Porto, de 1961, a temática social da infância desvalida e transviada, reconhecendo no apoio a esta uma forma particularmente justa e eficaz de contribuir para a profilaxia do delito.

Pelo afastamento face à iconografia tradicional da figuração alegórica, Resende não só substitui os atributos tradicionais das alegorias, como sucede nos painéis do Palácio da Justiça de Lisboa, de 1969, onde a alegoria da Temperança em vez de ser interpretada por uma figura a verter, escrupulosamente, o líquido de uma vasilha para outra, apresenta a mesma a dominar dois caprinos, como inclusive ousa ampliar o repertório das alegorias da Arte Judiciária, como sucede, também em Lisboa, com as alegorias de Janus, da Serenidade e da Verdade, esta última presente também no Tribunal de Vagos, representada em suporte de vitral.

Por sua vez, nos temas históricos, onde os atos de exercício do poder político se revestem de sublimes enquadramentos cenográficos que enaltecem a grandeza das figuras e a proeza dos acontecimentos, Resende combina eventos históricos solenes como a outorga de um Foral, com cenas de género da vida rural e económica, como sucede no afresco do tribunal de Anadia, de 1965, onde o artista recria, no plano inferior da composição a solenidade de uma reunião de estado presidida por D. Manuel I, que figura, sentado no trono, no seu Palácio, a par de juízes, corregedores, homens-bons e magistrados, enquanto no plano superior da composição, funcionando como pano de fundo da mesma, o pintor traça cenas de género, aludindo à paisagem rural e aos trabalhos agrícolas em Anadia. Já no afresco do Tribunal de Penafiel, de 1986, apesar de ser a obra de Arte Judiciária mais recente de Resende, a temática da evocação histórica recua para os longínquos tempos da romanização — a Civitas Anegia — que trazem o estabelecimento da Lex romana, passando doravante a Justiça a presidir, a mediar e a tutelar o progresso socioeconómico, identificada com os atributos tradicionais da balança e da espada, num registo agora algo pós-moderno.

The Law of the Twelve Tables begins with a prescription stating the following: “if anyone is called to judgment, attend”.

I am wondering whether this injunction, in addition to being applicable to each defendant, will not be valid for every artist, if we understand the call to the Judgment as being not strictly the act of being called to testify, but rather the duty of the artist to bear witness to the world and about his time. The art of Júlio Resende is nothing else©but this testimony.

An unique and same testimony, independently of the ways, the places and the themes it summons.

In the Justice and in the City, or better, in the Justice as in the City, the art of Júlio Resende is always and only his art. It is always and only his testimony.

For the spaces of the Justice, Resende created frescos, stained glasses and ceramic panels, designed for interior and exterior spaces. However, independently of the mediums, here again the artist reiterates the formal research and ethical commitment which define his work.

By formal research, Resende remains faithful to modern aesthetics and distances himself from the naturalistic transcription of the real, by his interpretation of the human figure, by the representation of animal and plants’ forms and by the multidimensional structuring of the pictorial space.

By his ethical and poetic commitment, Resende remains faithful to the expression of the social and existential condition of the human being.

It should be emphasized that Resende was the only artist who chose, as his intervention theme, in the vast artistic program of the Palácio da Justiça do Porto (1961) the social theme of the lost and underprivileged childhood, recognizing in the support to this a particularly fair and effective way to contribute to the prophylaxis of the offense.

By his displacement of the traditional iconography of allegorical figuration, Resende not only replaces the traditional attributes of the allegories, like happens on the panels of the Palácio da Justiça de Lisboa (1969), where the allegory of Temperance, instead of being interpreted by a figure to be shed, scrupulously, the liquid from one vessel to another, presents it, dominating two goats. He even dares to enlarge the repertoireof the allegories of the Judicial Art, like also happens in Lisbon, with the allegories of Janus, Serenity and Truth, this last one also located in the Tribunal de Vagos, represented in stained glass.

On the other hand, in the historical themes, where the acts of exercise of the political power take on sublime scenographic frameworks which exalt

the magnitude of the figures and the prowess of the events, Resende combines solemn historical events like the granting of a Foral, with scenes of rural and economic life, as in the fresco of the Tribunal da Anadia (1965), where the artist recreates, at the bottom of the composition, the solemnity of a state meeting presided over by the King Manuel I, sitting on the throne in the his palace, along with judges, corregidors, good men and magistrates, while in the upper plane of the composition, functioning as background, the painter traces scenes of gender, alluding to the rural landscape and to the agricultural works in Anadia. In the fresco of the Tribunal de Penafiel (1986), despite being Resende’s most recent work of Judicial Art, the theme of historical evocation goes back to the distant times of Romanization — the Civitas Anegia — which bring the establishment of Roman Lex and, consequently, the Justice to preside over, to mediate and to protect the socio-economic progress, being identified by the traditional attributes of the scale and the sword, now in a somewhat postmodern register.

Júlio Resende: Arte e Justiça — A Relação com a Cidade, por Nuno Ataíde das Neves Constitui um momento muito honroso para o Tribunal da Relação do Porto e para todos os seus Juízes Desembargadores esta iniciativa de homenagem ao Pintor Júlio Resende, por ocasião das comemorações do Centenário do seu nascimento, por ser muito merecida, justa e sentida. Integrada no Ciclo de eventos culturais e Conferências “A Relação com a Cidade” e em articulação de vontades e esforços com o Lugar do Desenho — Fundação Júlio Resende, pretende-se proclamar o Humanismo do Mestre Júlio Resende, os seus ideais de Liberdade, a sua Arte e a sua Ética, a marca indelével do Génio do Pintor na segunda metade do século XX, em particular no espectro Cultural da Cidade do Porto.

Evidenciam-se muito especialmente os seus Ideais de Liberdade e Igualdade e a sua Relação íntima com a Justiça, tão sublimemente retratados nas Magníficas Obras que o mesmo realizou em diversos Palácios da Justiça do País, assim como a sua relação com a cidade do Porto, com a exposição de diversos originais do Pintor, em particular sobre a Ribeira.

Para além da homenagem, pretende-se ainda afirmar cada vez mais o Tribunal da Relação como uma entidade de Cultura, integrada na rede cultural da cidade do Porto, abrindo as suas portas à Cidade e ao País e a todos os cidadãos que o queiram visitar.

Desejando-se também prestigiar os Tribunais e a Justiça.

Júlio Resende: Art and Justice — The Relation with the City, by Nuno Ataíde das Neves This initiative in honor of Pintor Júlio Resende, on the occasion of the celebration of the Centenary of his Birth, it is a very honorable moment for the Tribunal do Porto and for all its Judges once it is a well-deserved, fair and heart-felt tribute. Integrated in the Cycle of Cultural Events and Conferences “The Relation with the City” and in articulation with the wills and efforts of the Lugar do Desenho — Fundação Júlio Resende, it is intended to proclaim the Humanism of the Master Júlio Resende, his ideals of Freedom, his Art and Ethics, the indelible mark of the Painter’s Genius in the second half of the 20th century, particularly in the Cultural spectrum of Porto.

The Resende’s Ideals of Freedom and Equality are especially evident, and also its close relationship with Justice, so sublimely portrayed in the magnificent works that the artist produced in several Palácios da Justiça of the country, as well as its relation with the city of Porto, with the exhibition of several original works, in particular about Ribeira.

Besides this homage, it is also intended to affirm more and more the Tribunal da Relação as a Cultural entity, integrated into the cultural network of Porto, opening its doors to the City and to the Country and to all citizens who want to visit it.
