Karen: In that sense, by creating the Production Grants for Local Artists you were also aiming to promote the professionalization of artists’ labor and the demand for financial remuneration. Oscar: My sense is that this has been a very special program, and this is why I fight so hard to keep it going. It has so many valuable components, so it’s disheartening for us to be forced to run it with resources that are insufficient in proportion to the amount of artists who apply. The program opens many possibilities by allowing artists who are just getting started to develop a project, to try things out, to make mistakes and to do whatever they feel like doing; it’s a grant that provides an independent studio space and a sum of money that should allow artists to flesh out an idea, to materialize it through an everyday work routine, to have the time required to do this while ensuring the basic conditions are met, and to have a chance to discuss it with other people. Someone who receives a BLOC grant can show the results of their work at the Museo la Tertulia, our current partner institution for the program. This allows artists to explore how their
