Symphony No. 3 in A minor, op. 56 Scottish
Mendelssohn's "Scottish" Symphony was first performed by the Gewandhausorchester under the composer, as was the Prelude to Wagner's Meistersinger. The latter, who was equally at home in Leipzig, will appear in this concert with the Overture to The Flying Dutchman. The piece will share the bill with Blumine, a luminous Andante that Mahler removed from his First Symphony to let it shine its own light on the music scene. It precedes Schumann's Cello Concerto performed by Gautier Capuçon, this season's Artist-in-residence who ranks among the century's star cellists.
