Riccardo Muti, the CSO's music director and iconic figure in the world of music. He stands out for his close relationship with the Italian tradition and for his ability to explore famous and lesser-known repertoires with the same energy and depth. This approach will show evidence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and a programme that stretches out both sides of the ocean. On the Old Continent, Hindemith's symphony Mathias the Painter straddles constructive rationalism and emotional power. In the New World, the Bohemian composer Dvořák wrote the last and most famous of his nine symphonies, inspired by the vast American continent. The encounter of two cultures gave birth to one of the most astounding musical works of the late 19th century. Wagner will open the concert with the Overture to The Flying Dutchman.
