WORKSHOP

ENERGY FLOW

This project is a workshop providing space for Boyle Heights residents to elaborate on artistic concerns by the mural, textile, and ceramic, which is also open to visitors all around Los Angels. However, facing a subway station is the biggest constraint.

What can a subway station bring? Many people would think it supplies a more efficient and convenient way of public transportation. But what they have not expected is that the subway station is actually the start of gentrification. It takes the neighborhood everywhere they want to go and brings people from all around Los Angeles and even worldwide. That does promote local economic growth but meanwhile boosts consumption level. Visitors only care about the unique culture and relatively low rentals in Boyle Heights; however, when such enthusiasm dies down and crowds leave, all left is an unbearable economic strain for the whole neighborhood.

Responding to such a phenomenon, a huge drum is landed together with a long bar running while friendly stop people from invading these areas without proper respect.

RENOVATION

THE REVIVAL OF CAMPUS

Nowadays, the concept of quality-oriented education has been imposed on both teen students and high schools, proposing teen students should master specialities in order to stand out in the future society and it is schools' responsibility to offer such education. However, being used to exam-oriented education, schools even wish to shift educational concept but do not know how. And most of their effort just like putting lipstick on a pig. Under such circumstances, parents compel students to concentrate on speciality learning afterschool, which takes up all their spare time.

Teaism has been prevailing in China for centuries, and even modernization cannot shake its position. So I believe Teaism can be the solution for this challenge, making school education more diverse and rebuilding faith between teens and adults, teachers and parents.

GREENHOUSE OF REVIVAL

Planting tea trees in campus seems impossible, but greenhouse is a plausible solution. Locating downstairs of administration building, the greenhouse is only only a place for biographical practice adult communication. Inside the greenhouse, there are tea trees students and teachers plant together. Above the roof, people can talk about their secrets.

TEAHOUSE OF NEGOTIATION

Tea house is a place for tea tasting as well as social intercourse, for rest and communication. Nowadays, parents care much about children's pre-school education. The tea house, locating near kindergarten of the campus, offers space for parents interacting with the other parents and children. Also, the sloping roof of the teahouse offers children a fun place to play.

The current situation of Indian education has aroused the world's attention that there are many elites while penetration of education is very low. However, there are many people trying to challenge this circumstance. School in the Cloud is a project raised by Sugata Mitra to help children in distant areas have a better study environment.

Following this concept, we decided to re-build an already existing school educating adults is also necessary. So we deciede to help not only children but also adults to gain necessary knowledge via the cloud and study through interaction.

The aim of School in the Cloud is to spark creativity, curiosity and wonder in students and inspire them to take control of their own learning. We call spaces that make this happen Self Organized Learning Environments (SOLEs).

SOLEs can be created by anyone, anywhere, be it educators, parents together to answer Big Questions using the Internet. These places are fuelled by self-discovery, sharing and spontaneity.

helps to preserve a seemingly comfortable acoustic environment, such a negative approach could only result features to excavate. And as long as we grasp the way to utilize them, noise pollution can truly be suppressed.

With a giant canopy crossing underneath, such an intersection ensures space for musical activities for jamming musicians and pedestrians and isolation from city life with a deep breath of the Spree.

Noise pollution results when man does not listen carefully. Noises are the sounds we have learned to ignore. Noise pollution today is being resisted by noise abatement. This is a negative approach. We must seek a way to make environmental acoustics a positive study program. Which sounds do we want to preserve, encourage, multiply? When we know this, the boring or destructive sounds will be conspicuous enough and we will know why we must eliminate them. Only a total appreciation of the acoustic environment can give us the resources for improving the orchestration of the world soundscape. 1

SOUNDSCAPE OF BERLIN

While studying the soundscape of Berlin, I took a different lens to observe the city, citizens, and environment. Unlike images that can mislead people's comprehension by playing with the concept of perspective, sound recordings can always reveal the reality of what was happening. But it can also be so surrealistic and imaginative

In general, the footsteps of people are the most intriguing part of the experience. According to those footsteps, I could differentiate the status of their owners: whether they are Berliners or travelers, they are happy or bored...

THE BREATH OF BERLIN

With somewhat of an understanding of soundscape in Berlin, I made this video to represent my overall aural experience in the city. Water and train are two symbols of Berlin, which can be heard in nearly every corner of Berlin, and in different venues, they serve as different acoustic identities. And footstep is another interesting factor, which can help to interpret time, space, and weather even with your eyes closed.

SOUND MAP OF BERLIN (PARTIAL)

After having studied five major sites of interest, JamesSimon park has been chosen for its conjunction of the acoustic phenomenon that the Spree River, park, as well as a train track, contribute to a unique city soundscape.

The train provides consistent noise to the city. However, its acoustic potential is not neglectable. So retuning it is the goal.

site selection - James-simon park spree river park train

RETUNING THE TRAIN

With the chord concept in mind, a whole system to make this happen has emerged. In the light of electronic music, every source is a signal that can be edited in varied ways, which can be done in the same manner in retuning the train's sounds.

A train can be sensed in multiple perspectives: load (wind, snow, and rain load indicating the weather and interior load indicating volume of passengers), speed, intervals of each train... And each of them would contribute to a

the canopy.

Those signals are not utilized by musicians inside the park solely. Everyone inside the park can be the operator of the current texture of the train's sounds, and the signals can be accessed online so everyone can adapt them for their private use.
