As Lakeway, Texas began to be built up west of Austin, the city government noticed the city lacked a town center. cen Clean Scapes was hired to transform a local be shopping center into a thriving core hub by transforming vacant store lots into civic spaces. This utility area became a venue for movies and shows by local artists.

The Summit at Lantana Austin, Texas

The client for this project had north facing courtyard that received no direct sunlight. A Japanese ‘zen’ garden with shade tolerant plant species and raked limestone gravel gave the space new life. Each individual boulder had to be hand selected and properly placed to keep with Japanese Sakuteiki tradition.

The Cameron residence sits on a very sloped site with nearly 20 feet of grade change from the street in the front to the alley in the back. The design incorporated several terraces created by concrete retaining walls that break up the yard into distinct spaces meant for gardening, entertainment, and active leisure.

The Hodges decided to build a pool in their back yard and wanted to redesign their home’s entire landscape at the same time. They wanted a classic French country garden aesthetic but with modern clean lines. The unusual shape of their property and house provided opportunities for developing unique spaces.

The River Place Commercial Park has a café on site for the convenience of the office building tennents. However, the café was missing an outdoor seating area.

An ipe deck was designed to work with the existing tree canopy. A custom 3-Dimensional sign was made and a matching updated awning replaced the old one.

The Franklin Creek Park site provides a good opportunity to enhance and restore both Franklin Creek, the riparian zone and connected wetlands. The existing topography and morphology of the system allow several improvements to functionality and habitat diversity of the area. The existing topography contains several different terrace levels associated with active floodplains, wetlands and historical terraces and forest. A high terrace is located along the south stream bank. This entire south area is a mixture of herbaceous grassland and wetland community.

Franklin Creek and Rock River system has been affected by flashy storm water, channel modification, agricultural runoff and loss of wetland connectivity.

The plan proposes the enhancement of an existing riparian wetland, by excavation of a defined inlet set at elevation approximately 1ft above bankfull elevation. Currently, the wetland only interacts with the stream during very large storm events when the flood stage exceeds 7ft. Flows would exit through a defined outlet but also be conveyed into a connector channel to a created wetland. The created wetland would be excavated in an existing upland location.

The created wetland would be adjacent to and connected to a small perennial stream flowing out of the historic Grist Mill. The created wetland would function as a connected headwater wetland system and could be designed with varying depths and/or habitat components to focus on particular types of species if desired. The stream restoration would dramatically improve the existing condition by adding appropriate channel morphology bed features (ie. Riffle/pools) a meandering alignment and floodplain. The corridor would be planted with a mixture of woody species or kept as an herbaceous community depending on park management opinion. The proposed improvements and restoration to this site are feasible cost effective alternatives to enhances this areas habitat diversity and functionality while simultaneously providing additional examples of ecological restoration in the Rock River system.

In order to return the stream to a stable condition, Enviroscience proposes raising the grade of the existing channel back to a functional relationship with the historic floodplain. This process will connect the creek back to its floodplain and rehydrate the existing wetlands. During storm events, water will be stored adjacent to the stream in the wetlands where it will be filtered and slowly released over a lengthy period of time. Floodwater storage and treatment provides valuable ecological functions including flood protection and mitigation of downstream stormwater.

Today, Griswold Creek at Bessie Benner Metzenbaum Park is an unstable stream system suffering from erosion and impaired water quality. As stormwater fills the channel, it destabilizes the banks and scours the substrate creating a deeper channel which further disconnects the floodplain.

CONFLUENCE: ROOM AND A VIEW The concept of a public view inspired landforms that act as an armature for a unique perspective of Downtown Columbus. The landforms also created a dynamic ecology on the site, presenting various opportunities to celebrate many of Ohio’s most distinct and often rare ecosystems.

Marblehead

The Marblehead M ar blehe ad Peninsula Pe ninsul a For over 100 years the Marblehead Peninsula in Ottowa County, OH has been mined for its limestone. The limstone consisted of a calcium rich layer roughly 40’ thick which provided valuable slag for steel mines in Cleveland and around the Great Lakes. In 1988, local residents noted and catalogued a rare species of flower, the Lakeside Daisy (Hymenoxys acaulis) growing in abandoned mine areas. They petitioned the state to secure the land, and succeeded in aquiring 19 acres on the east side of the Quarry. A 1991 study of the active quarry noted several sites that also contain the rare flower, however these sites remain within the active mine and are subject to quarrying processes.

The Marblehead Quarry is home to one of only two naturally RFFXUULQJ populations of the Federally Endangered Lakeside Daisy. ,W Wolerates extreme drought through summer and flooding during spring, but cannot compete with the mining operations which cover the plant with mine spoils and crush it with machinery. However, Lakeside Daisy seeds have been hitching a ride on the limestone aggregate shipped from the quarry, and is slowly spreading itself across the great lakes.
