Welcome! Welcome to our new look live and film brochures! Tony Johnston, our Marketing and Publicity Officer has undertaken the graphic design in-house and we all think he has done a really great job. We trust you will enjoy leafing through and booking for some of the events we have on offer. Book your seat early for Lord David Puttnam – this promises to be a really interesting evening and tickets will be sought after. We are also pleased to be promoting arts events from other organisations: the very special English Song Weekend, St Laurence’s Summer Arts Festival and the Ludlow Fringe. Many of you will have noticed that the ‘old Visitor Information Centre’ has now been taken over by Tom Dickins Fine Art – and some of you will be wondering why! We are continuing to work hard towards the

Box Office: 01584 878141

Ludlow Assembly Rooms Transformation Project and are currently close to applying for planning permission. You will understand that this process, together with raising funds, all takes time. So rather than move the Box Office and VIC twice, at great cost, we decided it was better the space was used on a temporary basis while at the same time helping us to raise extra funds. We will keep you updated with more news as the project takes shape. Lastly, we have discovered the ‘rigging’ that the auditorium lights are attached to is in urgent need of repair/replacement. We will, therefore, be closing the auditorium for two weeks during May for these repairs to be undertaken but do look out for films in Oscars instead.

Painting: Robert Bates

GRAHAM AND ANN ARNOLD, ROBERT BATES: THREE CONTEMPORARY THE IMPRESSIONISTS ARTISTS, TWO FILMS They are the world’s most popular artists. The works of Cezanne, Monet, Degas and their compatriots fetch tens of millions of dollars. But just who were they really? Why and how did they paint? What lies behind their enduring appeal? To answer these questions, this film secured unique access to a major new exhibition focussing on the 19th century Parisian art collector Paul Durand-Ruel, the outspoken champion of Impressionism whose brave decision to exhibit these painters in New York in 1886 introduced Americans to modern French painting. In doing so, he not only filled great American galleries with Impressionist masterworks but also kept impressionism alive at a time when it faced complete failure.

Memorials of a Quiet Life looks at the world of Graham and Ann Arnold, who forty years ago, decided to abandon the metropolitan world and move to a remote countryside where they could work uninterrupted. In this film they reminisce about their first encounters with art, the discovery of like-minded artists and the independent quiet world which they created for themselves. Our other film features artist Robert Bates in conversation. He describes his working methods and demonstrates his watercolour technique for producing his small scale minutely observed and intricately executed landscapes. Shropshire locations Mitchell’s Fold stone circle and mines at Snailbeach lead mines provide inspiration. Graham Arnold and Robert Bates have solo shows at Silk Top Hat Gallery 1st – 27th June.

CARMEN

EVERYMAN

A passionate tale of lust, seduction and betrayal, no other opera boasts as big a following as Bizet’s Carmen. Set during the dying days of Franco’s Spain, Calixto Bieito’s acclaimed production of this must-see opera has been enjoyed by audiences across Europe.

Academy Award® nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) takes the title role in this dynamic new production of one of English drama’s oldest plays. Directed by Rufus Norris, Everyman now explodes onto the stage in a startling production with words by Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate.

Sung and surtitled in English.

Sensational mezzo-soprano Justina Gringyte leads the cast, alongside the internationally acclaimed tenor Eric Cutler as José, ENO Harewood Artist Eleanor Dennis as Micaëla and Leigh Melrose as the toreador Escamillo. Returning to the Coliseum to conduct this stunning production is Sir Richard Armstrong.

Everyman is successful, popular and riding high when Death comes calling. He is forced to abandon the life he has built and embark on a frantic search to recruit a friend, anyone, to speak in his defence. But Death is close behind, and time is running out...

THE MERCHANT OF VENICE In the melting pot of Venice, trade is God. With its ships plying the globe, the city opens its arms to all, as long as they come prepared to do business and there is profit to be made. With the gold flowing all is well, but when a contract between Bassanio and Shylock is broken, simmering racial tensions boil over. A wronged father, and despised outsider, Shylock looks to exact the ultimate price for a deal sealed in blood.

Eriksen’s other notable work has included extensive contributions to Anthony Minghella’s 2004 Oscarwinning film Cold Mountain as well as collaborations ranging from hardcore punk and Bosnian pop to symphony orchestra. “Among the world’s finest folk practitioners” - The Toronto Star This event will take place in Oscars.

THE SPOOKY MEN’S CHORALE Ennobled by improbable facial hair and dignified with cavernous vocal chords, The Spooky Men’s Chorale have been gleefully smashing up and reassembling the world of men’s singing since 2001. They employ a devastating combination of immaculate musical sensibilities, hair-raising deep harmonies and extreme silliness to explore the paradoxes of latter day masculinity. The repertoire, which began with

a simple combination of Georgian table songs, immaculate ballads and vaudevillian nonsense, has expanded to include sly and witty commentary on their own favourite body parts, a surfing anthem, and a mock Sufi ode to the Bee Gees - all performed with passion and a twinkle in the eye. “Inspired – and a triumph of choreography...a fantastic night out is guaranteed!” - Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2 Wednesday 19 August, 8pm Duration: 2hrs Tickets: £18 / £13 (under 18s)

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS Take one pair of estranged twin brothers (both called Antipholus), and one pair of estranged twin servants (both called Dromio), keep them in ignorance of each other and throw them into a city with a reputation for sorcery, and you have all the ingredients for theatrical chaos! A hectic tale of violent cross-purposes, furious slapstick and social nightmare, this sell-out production employs authentic Renaissance costumes and staging. “More hilarious anarchy than you can shake a fish, cat or identity-confused servant at.” London Theatre Guide.
