Welcome!

Professor Robert Winston will be with us in July for a thought provoking evening - exploring advances in gene technology and the ethical question of ‘enhancing humans’ through genetic modification.

Following their successful staging of Much Ado About Nothing, we are thrilled that Here to There Productions are back in June, bringing A Chorus of Disapproval to our stage.

A very special evening is lined up for you with Wurlitza – a five piece Cornish Band – presenting the live soundtrack to one of the greatest silent movies of all time – Sunrise.

A book that moved me several years ago was Touching the Void, the story of how Simon Yates had to cut the rope of his climbing partner Joe Simpson – an act which ultimately saved both their lives. Simon will be with us in May to talk about his life since then as a climber and guide and to share images and video footage of his great climbs.

If you were an under-the-covers Radio Luxembourg Fan, don’t miss The Manfred’s with originals Paul Jones, Mike Hugg and Tom McGuinness in July – I suspect tickets will go quickly for this one!

Dust off your dancing shoes and join us for a night of barn dancing in our fundraising evening with Hi Jinx Ceilidh Band. Other live music includes Le Vent Du Nord, performing Quebecois folk music and world music fans can look forward to some Afro-Latin grooves with Banda Bacana.

my mountain life With Simon Yates On the remote Siula Grande in Peru in June 1985 mountaineer Simon Yates found himself in a desperately unenviable position. He was slowly being pulled off the mountain face by his injured partner, Joe Simpson, dangling on the rope 50 metres below. His decision to cut the rope saved both their lives in the epic of survival that followed and with the publication of the book Touching the Void and the later film, both climbers became household names.

It was an experience that would have put many off the sport of mountaineering - but not Simon. 30 years later he is still a very active exploratory climber and guide, making several expeditions to the mountains each year.

Come along and share Simon’s epic journeys as a rock climber. Told with wit, dry humour and lavishly illustrated with images and video collected on his great climbs.

There will be an interval and post-show book signing.

sunrise With Wurlitza

Wurlitza, a five piece Cornish band, will be presenting a live soundtrack to F.W. Murnau’s Academy awardwinning film Sunrise – A Song of Two Humans.

Lauded as one of the greatest films of all time Sunrise is often considered to be the finest silent film ever made. F.W. Murnau’s film is a fine blend of Expressionist bleakness and Hollywood optimism; a rollercoaster of emotional tension with the most extraordinary cinematographic effects of his time.

With a live soundtrack ranging from Bach, Chopin and Villa Lobas to Echo and the Bunnymen and Talking Heads, Wurlitza successfully connect the 1920s with the present day. The musical line up includes four part vocal harmonies, classical and steel guitars, keyboards, clarinet, whistle, bass and djembe drums.

werther Based on Goethe’s novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, Massenet’s opera tells the story of the poet Werther’s hopeless love for Charlotte, who is committed to another man.

The music is full of lyrical beauty, passion and emotional fervour – there is no wonder that Werther is often considered to be the composer’s finest work. The Royal Opera’s Music Director Antonio Pappano returns to conduct film, theatre and opera director Benoît Jacquot’s classic production. Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo stars as Werther, alongside Joyce DiDonato, who sings her first Charlotte (one of the great French mezzo roles) in this staging.

professor robert winston modifying humans: Where does genetics stop?

History shows that humans are obsessed with their genes. Does the sequencing of the human genome really herald a new opportunity for medicine or is there a darker side that we ignore? IVF treatments now mean we can help 65 year-olds to conceive, store eggs and embryos in the deep freeze for several hundred years as well as screen embryos for serious genetic disorders before a pregnancy has even really begun.

Professor Robert Winston explores and discusses the advances in gene technology that enable us to not only select embryos for ‘desirable’ characteristics but to also modify genes of animals - very soon we may be able to enhance humans by genetic modification.

Will ethical considerations prevent us from the next step - manufacturing stronger, more gifted and very intelligent children? Or will our imperfect knowledge of how our abilities are inherited mean that there are some major surprises in store?

For more than 15 years, Ludlow has been a regular location for BISYOC, an annual gathering of young musicians from all over Europe and beyond.

Together they form a large symphony orchestra and perform throughout the region. In this, the first in the 2016 series of BISYOC concerts, the tutors, all professional performers in their own right, present a varied and entertaining programme of chamber music.

banda bacana A fantastic live band, Banda Bacana have built up a strong reputation amongst fans of World Music with their firm Afro-Latin grooves, guaranteed to get any dance floor stomping. josh widdicombe What do i do now...

Josh Widdicombe, that guy from the TV comedy shows with the curly hair, is back on the road with a brand new tour. Since he’s been away from stand up Josh has been working hard on other things but don’t worry in his spare time he has found a lot of minor things to get annoyed about, and now he has a chance to talk about them on stage (in the form of jokes).

Since he was last on tour Josh’s Channel 4 show The Last Leg has gone from strength to strength and been nominated for various awards including a British Comedy Award and a Broadcast Award, while finally winning one at the Royal Television Society Awards. He has also been seen on BBC2’s Mock the Week and QI, BBC1’s Live at the Apollo and Have I Got News for You and ITV1’s The Jonathan Ross Show, amongst other stuff. To be honest, it is going to be a blessed relief to get back to the relaxing world of live stand up.
