a syrian love story (12A)

Over the course of five turbulent years, this prize-winning documentary charts an incredible odyssey of a Syrian family who, through the despair of their own country, look for refuge in the West. Amer and Ragda met in a Syrian prison cell 15 years ago - they fell in love and when they were released they married and started a family together. Now, as they fight for political freedom in Syria, the family are torn apart by the tyrannical Assad dictatorship. They have no choice but to flee the country, but life in exile brings its own problems. For Raghda and Amer, it is a journey of hope, dreams and despair: for the revolution, their homeland and each other. “This unmissable documentary uncovers the heartbreaking story of a couple whose relationship disintegrates as they flee the horrors of Syria” Guardian (5 stars)

But when they finally head for the summit, we know that not all of them will make it back down the mountain. tangerines (15) (Mandariinid)

Ivo just wants to get his tangerine harvest in. Then he’ll leave Abkhazia, which in 1992 is engaged in a brutal struggle to break free of Georgia, and return to his native Estonia. But when there’s a firefight right outside his door, Ivo takes in and cares for two injured survivors – but they’re from opposite sides, and sworn enemies. This deeply affecting anti-war movie shows how the old man’s patient example, integrity and sheer humanity slowly influences the two men, gradually wearing away their deep-seated antagonism. As well as winning numerous awards, Tangerines was Oscar nominated for best foreign film, and stars Estonian actor Lembit Ulfsak. “lean, unadorned old-school filmmaking” Los Angeles Times “profoundly touching…an enormously enjoyable treat” Twitch Film

red army (15)

Join us for the global premiere LIVE from London’s Leicester Square where Ronaldo will be in attendance for a live Q&A

This fascinating documentary shows how the Red Army ice hockey team, through a combination of brutally rigorous training and incredible teamwork, becomes virtually unbeatable – and valuable propaganda. But the rise and fall of the Red Army team mirrors the fortunes of the Soviet Union, and when glasnost makes defection possible, players are lured to their team and country’s arch-enemy, the USA.

This film, for the first time, has unparalleled access to one of the world’s top tier sportsmen and celebrities at the peak of his career, following him across a substantial period of time in a year where he is competing in every major tournament including the Champions League, La Liga and the World Cup in Brazil, while solidifying his Ballon D’Or-backed status as football’s best player. taxi (Cert TBC)

Early in his career, photographer Dennis Stock became fascinated by the then unknown James Dean, and set about arranging a photo shoot for Life magazine. Dean is elusive; he doesn’t want to be photographed and keeps postponing the date; eventually they both escape to Dean’s Indiana hometown, where a surprising side of Dean emerges – and Stock finally gets his photographs. Starring Dane DeHaan as Dean and Robert Pattinson as Stock, with Ben Kingsley who is very funny as a practically apoplectic Jack Warner failing to get Dean to conform to the Studio publicity machine.

Jafar Panahi is an Iranian film-maker, but since he’s officially banned from film-making, he drives a taxi – and cleverly side-steps the ban by filming inside his car under the pretext that it’s a security camera. The resulting conversations, as people (including actors, friends and relations) hop in for a ride, are both funny and illuminating – and a snapshot of modern Iran. Taxi won the Golden Bear (the top prize) at the Berlin Film Festival.

“From the first scene, DeHaan gives us very much his own Dean, and he’s immediately rather fascinating” The Telegraph Mon 16 Nov, 2pm & Wed 18 Nov, 7.30pm Dir: Anton Corbijn, Canada/Germany/Australia/ USA, 2015, 111 mins

the program (15) This tense and suspenseful thriller is the true story of the rise and fall of Lance Armstrong, cancer survivor, sporting hero, seven-times Tour de France champion – and cheat. Sunday Times journalist David Walsh becomes suspicious of Armstrong’s sudden success early on, but has to battle long and hard to unveil the truth. This gripping film is inspired by his book Seven Deadly Sins, and stars Ben Foster as Armstrong and Chris O’Dowd as Walsh, with Guillaume Canet and Jess Plemons. “a fluid and nippy telling of a tale that still seems strangely urgent… excels in examining how it feels to be unable to accept defeat, even when you know victory was ill-gained” The Guardian Mon 23 & Tue 24 Nov, 7.30pm Dir: Stephen Frears, UK/France, 2015, 103 mins 6 ludlowassemblyrooms.co.uk

Stranded on a hostile planet with dwindling supplies, he’ll have to draw on all his courage and ingenuity if he is to survive – but with Mars so far away, is there the slightest hope of ‘The Martian’ ever coming home? Based on the best-seller by Andy Weir, this thrilling rescue story stars Matt Damon, with Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean and Chiwetel Ejiofor. “Anchored by another great turn from Matt Damon, The Martian mixes smarts, laughs, weird character bits and tension on a huge canvas. The result is Scott’s most purely enjoyable film for ages” Empire

suffragette (12A) Suffragette is a reminder of how restricted women’s lives still were in the early 20th century, and how valiantly ordinary women fought for equal rights. Carey Mulligan plays a downtrodden working woman who, though reluctant to step out of line, gradually finds her voice and joins the suffragette movement – but her bid for freedom comes at a very high price. The terrific cast includes Helena Bonham Carter, Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson and Anne-Marie Duff, with Meryl Streep making a cameo appearance as Emmeline Pankhurst.

The film is adapted from Bennett’s prizewinning stage play about his extraordinary tenant, and stars Maggie Smith, with Alex Jennings as Alan Bennett, Dominic Cooper, James Corden, Jim Broadbent, Frances de la Tour and Roger Allam.

This is a lavish gift of a role for Smith, a layered gateau handed to her on a plate. She makes this hardy troglodyte a tottering, staggering force of nature, determined to owe nothing to anybody The Telegraph
