Welcome to our Spring Brochure.

We have another excellent season of drama, music, comedy and dance ahead of us, and I am sure there will be plenty to tempt you along.

I’d like to thank you for your continued support over the years. In these challenging economic times of reduced funding and diminished grants, the loyalty and goodwill of our audiences have played an important role in the survival of Ludlow Assembly Rooms.

Because of you, in 2013-14 we were able to put together a diverse programme that included 59 live events, 112 films, 27 streamed events and 1200 community activities.

But to continue as a thriving arts and community centre, we must adapt and change. This is why, on events from 1 January 2015, there will be a £1 booking fee added to each ticket for live events, films and streamed events. There are several reasons for this: • To cover rising administrative costs • To ensure we comply with EU-wide sales regulations This will replace our previous arrangement, under which different costs were charged depending on the method of payment and point of purchase (online or Box Office).

Together, with your support, we can continue to provide a sustainable future for Ludlow Assembly Rooms and ensure that our arts and community centre is enjoyed for generations to come.

Love’s Labour’s Lost Summer 1914. In order to dedicate themselves to a life of study, the King and his friends take an oath to avoid the company of women for three years. No sooner have they made their pledge than the Princess of France and her ladies-in-waiting arrive, presenting them with a severe test of resolve.

Shakespeare’s sparkling comedy delights in championing and then unravelling an unrealistic vow, mischievously suggesting that the study of the opposite sex is in fact the highest of all academic endeavours. Only at the end of the play is the merriment curtailed as the lovers agree to submit to a period apart, unaware that the world around them is about to be utterly transformed by the war to end all wars.

Lisa Knapp Since emerging on the folk scene in 2007, Lisa has established and evolved her own distinctive voice, absorbing a whole range of influences to craft a sound that is at once beautiful, dramatic and adventurous.

Inspired by the songs and stories of Annie Briggs, Martin Carthy and Pentangle, Lisa’s unique style blends radiant traditional folk with contemporary flavours, cementing her reputation as one of the most creative and distinctive artists around.

Lisa will be accompanied by her full backing band, including Pete Flood (Bellowhead) on percussion.

Thursday 12 March, 7pm India is surging with global ambition. But beyond the luxury hotels surrounding Mumbai airport lies a makeshift slum, full of people with plans of their own. Zehrunisa and her son Abdul aim to recycle enough rubbish to fund a proper house. Sunil, twelve and stunted, wants to eat until he’s as tall as Kalu the thief. Asha seeks to steal government anti-poverty funds to turn herself into a ‘first-class person’, while her daughter Manju intends to become the slum’s first female graduate.

But their schemes are fragile; global recession threatens the garbage trade, and another slum-dweller is about to make an accusation that will destroy herself and shatter the neighbourhood.

Based on the book by Pulitzer Prize-winner Katherine Boo, starring Meera Syal (Goodness Gracious Me) and directed by Rufus Norris (Broken, London Road).

Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, surely the greatest of all romantic ballets, is the captivating story of a beautiful woman transformed into a swan, and a heart-rending tribute to the power of love.

From Royal Ballet’s earliest days, Swan Lake has been one of its signature works. In this interpretation, producer Anthony Dowell returned to an authentic version of the choreography based on the 1895 production. Designer Yolanda Sonnabend’s sets, meanwhile, draw on the Russian Imperial Court of that period, blending historical accuracy with gothic fantasy.

The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny An opera in three acts. Sung in English A major work from the remarkable partnership of playwright and poet Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill, Mahagonny was first performed in Leipzig in 1930.

This opera is a satire on money, morality and pleasure-seeking among the dubious citizens of a fictional city. The richly varied, jazz-infused score, influenced by ragtime music, includes such irresistible melodies as the ‘Alabama Song’ and many dramatic ensembles. The superb cast includes Kurt Streit as the wild lumberjack Jimmy, Christine Rice as his sweetheart Jenny, and Anne Sofie von Otter as the cunning Leokadja Begbick.

Hilary, a young psychology researcher at a brainscience institute, is nursing a private sorrow and a troubling question at work, where psychology and biology meet. If there is nothing but matter, what is consciousness? This is ‘the hard problem’ which puts Hilary at odds with her colleagues who include her first mentor Spike, her boss Leo and the billionaire founder of the institute, Jerry. Is the day coming when the computer and the MRI scanner will answer all the questions psychology can ask? Meanwhile Hilary needs a miracle, and she is prepared to pray for one.
