‘Waad Mohammed is utterly disarming in the title role, her tomboyish grin lights up the screen … while many of the vignettes in the home and at school are very funny, we get an acute sense of the little everyday frustrations and burdens that Saudi women have to shoulder.’ The Telegraph The first Saudi Arabian film to be directed by a woman, this delightful story focuses on 10-year-old Wadjda, who sets her heart on owning a beautiful green bicycle she’s seen for sale. Fearing disapproval her mother forbids it, so the spirited Wadjda sets out to raise the money herself. While clearly illustrating Saudi restrictions which limit women’s lives, the film is funny and charming, and offers hope for the future.

Documentary about Stephen Hook, who in an attempt to save his family farm decides to turn his back on the cost-cutting dairies and supermarkets, and instead stay small and keep his close relationship with the herd. However farmer Hook’s plans to save the farm do not always go down well with his 55 spirited cows. The result is a laughout-loud, emotional roller-coaster of a journey. Filmmaker Andy Heathcote will be present to introduce the Wednesday screening, and to answer your questions after the film. Booked to celebrate the Green Festival on Sun 25 August.

The Lone Ranger

Set on the sun-soaked Côte d’Azur in the summer of 1915, Jean Renoir - son of the Impressionist painter, Pierre-Auguste - returns home to convalesce after being wounded in World War I. At his side is Andrée, a beautiful young woman who enchants and inspires both father and son. What emerges from this exquisitely filmed and moving story is the rivalry between two great artists (Jean Renoir went on to become a celebrated filmmaker), and the love between father and son.

‘a moving portrait of the ancient relationship between a farmer and his animals, set against a backdrop of changing seasons, changing fortunes, birth and death.’ The Telegraph
