Measuring a somewhat more forgiving 5,500 yards or so, the Pam Barton Course therefore lends itself more readily to ladies’ golf. Here the premium is not on distance, but on accuracy. With tree-lined fairways anything wayward off the tee will be severely punished and it is equally crucial to be precise with an approach into relatively small, well-protected greens. While the courses are generally fairly flat and perfect for easy walking, they are far from featureless. The humps and hollows – for which J.H. Taylor is famous – play like the dunes of a links course and force the golfer to think carefully before choosing their club.

Another Taylor feature - bunkers - may be eye-catching but live up to their name of sand “trap”, so ensure you take a lesson from the professionals if you are lacking in confidence as it is a skill that is sure to be called upon at some stage.

The amateur record is held by Royal Mid-Surrey Artisan Member Pat Cunningham who, in the monthly medal of July 1982, shot a gross score of 62.

It is an unusual coincidence that both the professional and amateur course record holders on the Outer Course at Royal Mid-Surrey are left-handed players. The professional record is held jointly by the left-handed New Zealander Bob Charles and Bernard Gallagher who both shot a gross score of 64 on the same day. This was the occasion of the Eccentric Club Pro-Am on 11th July 1979.
