I’m an enthusiastic and innovative student currently on my university placement year.

I am a practical and hands-on designer who enjoys physical and CAD modelling to help develop and improve my designs. I am excellent at problem-solving and have developed proven teamwork skills demonstrated through a range of group projects and extracurricular activities. I enjoy meeting and working with new people so after graduating, I hope to continue to develop my skills whilst learning from colleagues, in the hope that I am able to take inspiration from all kinds of design.

I am currently looking for an industrial placement at a design company where I can develop existing skills and gain experience pursuing a career within design.

The Brief How might we improve the experience for the increasing number of people with hybrid working patterns?” - 5 weeks Hybrid working - ‘a type of flexible working where an employee splits their time between the workplace and working remotely’.

Due to COVID-19, the percentage of employees working from home rose from 27% in 2019 to 37% in 2020. For most employees, this meant adapting to online meetings and communicating via video calls. For single mothers, however, this meant closed daycares and a lack of babysitters, forcing them to balance working from home with occupying their children. To portraying this demographic, the product was designed for the typical 30 year old mother with a child in preschool. The main insights found were: • Usual work breaks got filled with child care responsibilities, causing stress • Child is left alone for long hours of the day - agitated, restlessness • Mother and child rarely interact creating a lack of communication

The product, designed in Solidworks and rendered in Keyshot uses a main material of sanded pine wood, using green (hex #d7e8c9) detailing for the small components.

02 The Brief “Design an innovative product that uses Cartonboard as its main material” As a brief set by Procarton, I decided to focus on the topic of food and drink and sustainability, designing a product which is multi-purposeful and can educate children on the benefits of recycling products.

The long-term aim of this project was to eventually inspire younger generations to become environmentally conscious and for parents to start to choosing recyclable and reusable products for their children.

After broad initial ideation, the project began to focus onto drinks packaging and 2in1 design.

This inspired the final design of the ‘Sproutlings Bottles’ - a healthy children’s drink alternative which after consumtion, can be cut apart and reused as temporary plant pots.

Flavours examples for the drink consist of: - Apple and Carrot - Strawberry and Radish - Kiwi and Cucumber These flavours are not only healthy for the child and encourage the consumption of vegetables, but the second ingredients’ seeds are contained in the lower compartment, ready for growing.

Modelling Functionality To test the functionality and to experiment with sizing, prototype modelling is important.

This model was modelled using cardboard, inner plastic lining and a temporary bottle lid.

Water volume fitted inside the bottle was 150ml

The inner plastic layer is then discarded for the bottom half to be used as a plant pot. The user would then add the seeds from the lower compartment and cut out the level indicators from the back of the bottle

Despite the model substitutes in material, the bottle only had small leakages when poured

Using scissors, I cut along the centre line through the cartonboard and plastic layer to create two halves

2in1 Design

After drinking, the bottle is cut into a plant pot, which using the seeds provided encourages the child to reuse the product and to start their own vegetable gardens.

Before planting, the product must be cut apart and the inner liquid lining must be cut.

The liner, made from a type of beezwax paper is recycleable and does not affect the flavour stability of the drink. As it is made from organic materials, it also has no affect on plant growth.

It is imagined the lifespan of the product would end after the plant has grown too big for the provided pot and so the bottom base is discarded and recycled.

As the product is mainly made from cartonboard, the product will be send back to the papermill and broken down into pulp fibers to be reused.

Not all of the product is sustainable as it was designed to use a hard plastic bottle cap.

Designing the hairdryer to be as realistic as possible, the shell casing is made from easily mass-produced matte plastic - either Polycarbonate (PC), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) or Polypropylene.

The casing would be created through injection moulding; filling the molten plastic into a stainless steel die, cooling, removing all parts and then assembling together, fitting the inner mechanism inside and fastening with screws.

Final Concept Following design restrictions for this project, this hair-dryer was designed to fit within the trends of ‘elegant, sophisticated and refined’.

After modelling shape and form and experimenting with colour palettes and varied materials, I chose a monotone beige plastic casing for the main body as it allowed the product to be easy mass produced whilst maintaining an exterior that appeared elegant, feminine and expensive.

Small details were added on later such as the matte black nozzle for quicker drying, the three-step buttons to control temperature and speed, and the rubber component to protect the surface from scratches, located on the side of the body where the company name would be printed.

The final concept was modelled using yellow foam, grey foam and 3D printing PLA filiament.

04 The Brief “How might we monitor those with chronic and long-term conditions in the home” As part of my Human 2.0 project brief, I was tasked with creating a piece of technology which could assist human’s in their everyday life.

In recent years, the development of assistive technology has made great impacts for the disabled community through the design of user-controlled products such as wheelchairs, and assistance aids which respond to commands. Technology is important for those with disabilities as it can create independance and allow them to rehabilitate into normal situations.

Trends and Consumer Research The NHS is predicted to be extinct in the next few years, as the majority of the of the population become registered under private healthcare. According to Catherine Maskel, ID Medical’s marketing director, it is predicted that in 2030, “digital first” appointments would start to be offered as an option before in-person consultations with a doctor.

This option, however, was introduced 10 years earlier, in 2020, due to COVID-19 causing people to be less interested in travelling for appointments into highrisk areas such as hospitals. Virtual appointments, however, are still long and tedious, especially for those with longterm, chronic conditions which are not progressing. Developments in assistive technology could provide alternatives to these problems.

Looking at the comparisons between current technology and future technological design concepts, it is clear that over time, visible technology is predicted to decrease in size and become more minimalist in their appearance. It the majority of new concepts, the products are dull in colour, using a limited colour palette and are more likely to use a monochromatic grey tone.

Disability Aids Go Wheelchair: a concept design for personalised 3D-printed wheelchairs which, using technological advancements, could enable users to stand up to reach highobjects and climb stairs. Lightweight, carbon fiber design.

The 3D printed design would customise the dimensions of the cheelchair to a specifc user’s body measurements

Remote Monitoring

It was important for this project to choose a suitable persona to design against. The demographic I chose to design for was elderly men and women living with longterm chronic conditions such as heart disease. This market are typically retired and spend most of their time in the home.

Aims of the concept: - Encourage independence - Reduce hospital visits - Provide reassurance about monitoring health

ECG Monitoring Wearable technology has made fitness tracking much easier as the user can visually see their statistics in real-time using accessories such as smart watches, fitness bands, etc. Using this concept, a wearable medical device would also make tracking easier for the user and for patients with long-term medical conditions. It’s easier to carry around a small, lightweight medical band than a bulky machine, proving freedom and independence for the user.

Looking into medical assistance technology in the home, it is predicted that self-monitoring will become more popular as medical care becomes more privatised and the need to monitor chronic conditions in the aging population becomes more important.

Self-monitoring would reduce the amount of unnecessary trips to the ER due to false symptoms.

Features of Aspire Medical

Date and time makes the product functional as a normal watch. Important as it would likely take the place of where users wear their current watches.

Heartrate is avaliable immediately on the opening page but is on a rollover side, alternating between heartrate, blood pressure, temperature and respitory rate every couple minutes.

Plug in USB-C charging but would be designed to have wireless charging also.

Easy bracelet clasp making it easy for the product to be slipped on and off the wrist.

Device comes in silver, gold and rose gold colouring as to fit the user’s personal style

Device is provided by the NHS and has the user’s personal NHS number printed on the inside for easy access to medical records upon unconscious permit to a hospital.
